Weeks of Great Lent. Saturdays of Great Lent. Special days of Lent

To the begining

Second week

The Church calls Great Lent
the week of light-giving fasts
and during it prays to the Lord primarily for the grace-filled sanctification of those who fast and repent.
“Lord, direct us to repeat fasting, shine upon us sanctification and enlightenment of Your justifications
.

For the grace of God cleanses our sins (see the Gospel of the second week of Pentecost), and shines forth to believers especially during fasting, prayer and other deeds of piety. Therefore, repeating the encouragement to the exploits of fasting, prayer, tenderness and repentance, the Church in the second week of Pentecost calls and guides us from the sinful darkness into which we have fallen both by first moving away from God, and secondarily, as the Church says, by desecrating the robe of divine baptism and enlightenment , among the varied deceptions of the world, pointing us to the longed-for fruits of true piety - to the gracious light and reunification with God, following the example of the prodigal son, who turned to his father with prayer and repentance and received from him forgiveness of his sins and new gifts of grace. “Prayer and fasting are wonderful weapons

, says the Church.
Fasting made Moses a seer of God, Elijah a fiery charioteer, Paul a wondrous man of heaven.
So, let us fast from evil and admire the height of dispassion .

Just as the paralytic, who is mentioned in the Gospel read in the second week of Great Lent, being brought to the Lord, received from Him forgiveness of sins and healing from illness, so the spiritually paralytic, flowing to the Lord with prayer and repentance, He heals and restores with the power of His grace. .

Some of the sacred chants now sung in the second week

St. During the service of Pentecost, the Church received from Joseph and Theodore the Studites and Theophan of Nicaea.

For the edification and guidance of those who fast towards grace-filled sanctification and illumination, the Church during divine services in the second week

Great Lent is remembered by St.
communicants and defenders of the blessed light. Thus, at Compline on the first Sunday of Lent, he remembers the prophets who, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, prophesied about New Testament grace (1 Pet. 1:10). source:

Memory of Saint Gregory Palamas

Each week of Lent carries a certain meaning and meaning. So, the meaning of the first week

Great Lent - the Triumph of Orthodoxy was that a new truth of the Orthodox faith was revealed. And when, after this first Sunday of Great Lent, we entered the second week, we were already walking a new path.

Which way?

The fact is that an icon depicting God, as taught by the holy fathers who established the veneration of icons, may be combined with some of the properties of God because God the Creator Himself inscribed
His image, His icon,
. Every person carries within himself the living image of God. And the goal of the aspiration of fasting, the aspiration of all our deeds - repentance, prayer, our requests - is the aspiration to reveal in us the image of God, which is inscribed in our nature, in our nature by the hand of God the Creator Himself. It has become easier to breathe, it has become better to live, we become cleaner, seeing where we are going, and why we are going, and what we are asking God for.

Second week

, the second Sunday of Great Lent puts our mental, spiritual gaze before the teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas about the image of God in us, because we ask ourselves:
“What is the “image of God” inscribed by God Himself in us?
What is it? What is he like? What is he? And Gregory Palamas answers precisely this question. Saint Gregory Palamas wrote many works, but one of his greatest works, the most important, is the so-called “Tomos of Faith”. And in it the saint says that the image of God in us is, first of all, light, not physical light, but the same light that shone on the Lord Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor at the hour of His wondrous Transfiguration. This is the light of the glory of God, and the image of God in man is a ray of this glory of God. A person with the image of God in himself does incredible things - he cripples him, defiles him, darkens him. We know this. But perhaps not everyone knows that this image is still indestructible. Man cannot destroy the image of God in himself due to God’s mercy towards us. He is indestructible!

And it is inherent in each of us, this light not made by hands, the ever-present light of the glory of God, revealed on Mount Tabor at the hour of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

Christ said that the Kingdom of God is also within us. Now, in order to reveal it in yourself, you need to obey the Church, you need to accept its maternal leadership, you need to give your hands to the Mother Church. And she, taking you by this hand, will certainly lead you to the happiness of revealing in yourself all the best, the most sacred thing that can be - participation in the Divine.

And now, when the images of the saints pass before us, let us remember that they are not only people who were illuminated in mind, purified in heart, but that these are people who accepted God, just as iron can be pierced with fire, and who have become on earth the vision of that to which all creation is recognized.

Prayer for a deceased Christian

Remember, O Lord our God, in the faith and hope of the eternal life of Your departed servant, our brother (name), and as Good and Lover of mankind, forgiving sins and consuming untruths, weaken, forsake and forgive all his voluntary and involuntary sins, deliver him eternal torment and fire of Gehenna, and grant him the communion and enjoyment of Your eternal good things, prepared for those who love You: even if you sin, do not depart from You, and undoubtedly in the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Your glorified God in the Trinity, Faith, and Unity in the Trinity and the Trinity in Unity, Orthodox even until his last breath of confession. Be merciful to him, and faith, even in You instead of deeds, and with Your saints, as You give generous rest: for there is no man who will live and not sin. But You are the One besides all sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and You are the One God of mercies and generosity, and love for mankind, and to You we send glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen

Widow's Prayer

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! You are the consolation of the weeping, the intercession of the orphans and widows. You said: call on Me in the day of your sorrow, and I will destroy you. In the days of my sorrow, I run to You and pray to You: do not turn Your face away from me and hear my prayer brought to You with tears. You, Lord, Master of all, have deigned to unite me with one of Your servants, so that we may be one body and one spirit; You gave me this servant as a companion and protector. It was Your good and wise will that you would take this servant of Yours away from me and leave me alone. I bow before Your will and I resort to You in the days of my sorrow: quench my sorrow about separation from Your servant, my friend. Even if you took him away from me, do not take your mercy away from me. Just as you once accepted two mites from widows, so accept this prayer of mine. Remember, Lord, the soul of Your departed servant (name), forgive him all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, whether in word, or in deed, or in knowledge and ignorance, do not destroy him with his iniquities and do not consign him to eternal torment, but according to Your great mercy and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, weaken and forgive all his sins and commit them with Thy saints, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life. I pray and ask You, Lord, grant that all the days of my life I will not cease to pray for Your departed servant, and even before my departure, ask You, the Judge of the whole world, to forgive all his sins and place him in the Heavenly abodes, which You have prepared for those who love Cha. For even if you sin, do not depart from You, and undoubtedly the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are Orthodox even to your last breath of confession; imputed to him the same faith, even in You, instead of works: for there is no man who will live and not sin, You are the only one besides sin, and Your righteousness is righteousness forever. I believe, Lord, and confess that You will hear my prayer and do not turn Your face away from me. Seeing a widow weeping green, you were merciful, and you brought her son to the grave, carrying her to the grave; How did You open to Your servant Theophilus, who went to You, the doors of Your mercy and forgave him his sins through the prayers of Your Holy Church, heeding the prayers and alms of his wife: here and I pray to You, accept my prayer for Your servant and bring him into eternal life. For You are our hope. You are God, the hedgehog to have mercy and save, and we send glory to You with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lenten Parents' Saturday

The second, third and fourth Saturdays of Great Lent are days of general remembrance of all “in the hope of resurrection and eternal life”

fallen asleep in the Lord. According to the word of Jesus Christ, we must love our neighbors as ourselves, and in the prayerful memory of the departed, our greatest, completely unselfish and intimate love is manifested. And this love is very dear to the dead, because we bring them, the helpless, help.

During the days of Great Lent, the duty of every true believer is charity and mercy. Through them we show the Lord that we are also worthy of His mercy and beneficence. One of these acts, the most important for us, is the remembrance of the dead. By asking God for forgiveness for the sins of our loved ones, friends, and relatives during their earthly lives, we ourselves receive hope for the forgiveness of our own sins after death.

Another reason for the founding of parental Saturdays is that during these days of Great Lent, apart from Saturdays and Sundays, there are no liturgies, and the dead are, as it were, deprived of the benefits that commemoration during the liturgy brings them. Therefore, in replacement of the liturgy, the Church established a special prayer for the dead on Saturdays of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weeks.

The other Saturdays of Great Lent, dedicated to special memories, no longer have the name Parental and on them the commemoration of the dead is carried out according to the usual order.

It is on these three Lenten Saturdays that pious people, coming to church, pray with special zeal for their deceased relatives and friends, light candles for their repose, serve memorial services, give alms for the remission of their sins, thereby showing love for their neighbors.

Each of us needs to understand the full significance of commemorating the dead. A sinful person, falling into the afterlife and not worthy of the Kingdom of God, can no longer pray to the Lord for himself and for others. Only saints and especially pious people receive this opportunity. If here on earth he can confess his sins and receive forgiveness, then there he is deprived of this opportunity.

But think about it, do all people go into another world completely cleansed, do they confess all their sins to a priest, does everyone even have the opportunity to confess before death? What if someone, having sinned in a small way, forgot it and did not repent at confession? Or, out of false modesty, did he hide his sin? And then died suddenly? It turns out that there is no guarantee that a person will find peace in the next world. After all, even the smallest sin can prevent him from reaching heaven and doom him to eternal torment.

Widower's Prayer

Christ Jesus, Lord and Almighty! In contrition and tenderness of my heart, I pray to You: rest, O Lord, the soul of Your departed servant (name), in Your Heavenly Kingdom. Lord Almighty! You blessed the marital union of husband and wife, when you said: it is not good for man to be alone, let us create for him a helper for him. You have sanctified this union in the image of the spiritual union of Christ with the Church. I believe, Lord, and confess that You have blessed me to unite me in this holy union with one of Your handmaids. By your good and wise will you deigned to take away from me this servant of yours, whom you have given to me as a helper and companion of my life. I bow before Your will, and I pray to You with all my heart, accept my prayer for Your servant (name), and forgive her if you sin in word, deed, thought, knowledge and ignorance; Love earthly things more than heavenly things; Even if you care more about the clothing and decoration of your body than about the enlightenment of the clothing of your soul; or even careless about your children; if you upset anyone by word or deed; If there is a grudge in your heart against your neighbor or condemn someone or anything else you have done from such evil people. Forgive her all this, for she is good and philanthropic; for there is no man who will live and not sin. Do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, as Thy creation, do not condemn her to eternal torment for her sin, but have mercy and mercy according to Thy great mercy. I pray and ask You, Lord, to grant me strength throughout the days of my life, without ceasing to pray for Your departed servant, and even until the end of my life to ask her from You, the Judge of the whole world, to forgive her sins. Yes, as if You, God, placed a crown of stone on her head, crowning her here on earth; Thus crown me with Thy eternal glory in Thy Heavenly Kingdom, with all the saints who rejoice there, so that together with them He may forever sing Thy all-holy name with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Second Passion of Lent

On Sunday evenings, Orthodox Christians rush to special Lenten services - Passion

, which translated means “Suffering,” services that are one of the most beloved Lenten services.

A Crucifix in mourning attire is placed in the middle of the temple, and candles are lit in front of It. Concentrated pilgrims listen to the soul-saving singing of the choir, compiled from the Good Friday services, the priest performs censing. Then begins the reading of the Gospel, which tells about the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The following of the passion occurs 4 times a year (according to the number of evangelists): on the first, second, third and fourth Sundays of Great Lent, in the evenings. As the name implies, these services commemorate the saving suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ. For each Passion, one of all the Gospel stories about this is read: on the first Passion - chapters 26 and 27 from Matthew, on the second - 14 and 15 from Mark, on the third - 22 and 23 from Luke, on the fourth - 18 and 19 from John .

According to tradition, while reading the Gospel, worshipers stand with lit candles in their hands.

That’s why it’s called passionate. Particular silence reigns at this time; worshipers stand with burning candles in their hands, some kneel down.

In addition, during the Passion we hear some touching hymns from the service of Good Friday - the day of the Lord’s bodily death. Thus, the stichera “Come, let us bless Joseph of ever-memorable” is performed, which is sung while kissing the Shroud of Christ; before reading the Gospel, the prokeimenon sounds: “Having divided My garments for myself, and casting lots for My clothing...” These and other prayers lift us to Calvary, again and again reminding us of the ultimate goal of Lent - co- crucifixion with Christ

.

The early rite of this service did not include any parts, but popular piety added to the Gospel and sermon an akathist - the Cross of Christ or the Passion of the Lord, which are usually sung not only by the singers, but by all pilgrims. It is not surprising that Russian Orthodox Christians love passion so much. Passions make a deep impression on believers. With their inner content, they provide those praying with high spiritual consolation and edification.

During this Lent, there is still time to visit the temple during Passion for those who have not yet prayed at this service. While there is still time,

“Let each of us in our souls and hearts, with all honesty and sincerity, compare what our Savior did for us and what I do for Him. Is my personal life evidence of the truth I believe?”

- Archimandrite John (Krestyankin) admonished the Orthodox. Let us also listen to his words.

Children's prayer for deceased parents

Lord Jesus Christ our God! You are the keeper of the orphans, the refuge of the grieving and the comforter of the weeping. With contrition and tenderness of heart, I pray to Thee, merciful Judge, do not punish with eternal punishment the unforgettable deceased (unforgettable deceased) for me Thy servant (Thy servant), my parent (my mother) (name), but forgive him (her) all his sins ( her) voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, knowledge and ignorance, created by him (her) in his (her) life here on earth, and according to Your mercy and love for mankind, prayers for the sake of the Most Pure Mother of God and all the saints, have mercy on him (her) and eternal save me from torment. Amen

Second week of Lent in 2022 by day

March 22, Monday
The Day of Remembrance of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste is a permanent (except in exceptional cases) holiday, especially beloved in the Russian Church. There is a folk tradition associated with this day: it has long been customary to bake buns in the shape of larks. The flight of these birds seems to symbolize the movement of the Christian’s soul: a rapid rise is its desire for the Lord, a sharp decline is humility before His greatness.

Features of the service:

Despite the fact that there is no liturgy on Mondays of Great Lent, in connection with the holiday the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated.

Memorial Days

: Forty Martyrs are 40 Christian soldiers who suffered for their faith in the 6th century in Sebaste (the territory of modern Turkey).
The Albazin Icon of the Mother of God “The Word became Flesh”
- a miraculous shrine of the Amur region, named after a line from the Gospel of John (a fragment of which is read on Easter night).

Fast:

Since the day of the 40 martyrs is one of the most revered holidays, the fast is weakened.

.

Fast:

There are no indulgences in food fasting, but cooked food is allowed, not just bread and raw or dried fruits and vegetables.
The monastic charter allows the use of vegetable oil only on weekends and holidays, but laymen often, based on their living conditions, use it on other days (it is difficult and pointless to thoroughly analyze the composition of the dishes offered there during a lunch break in a public canteen). March 24, Wednesday
Features of the service:

Memorial Days:

St. Sophrony, Patriarch of Jerusalem, together with his teacher Blessed John Moschus, compiled a collection of stories about saints and ascetics

Fast:

On Wednesdays throughout the year, except for continuous weeks, it is customary to fast, since Wednesday is the day of remembrance of the betrayal of Christ by Judas.
And during the days of Great Lent, it is even more necessary to be more attentive to the instructions of the charter. March 25, Thursday
Features of the service:

There is no liturgy.

Memorial Days:

Saint Gregory Dvoeslov, Pope of Rome. He is often called the compiler of the rite of the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, and his name is mentioned at every such service of Great Lent. He is also known as the author of a large number of spiritual books. St. Simeon the New Theologian - one of three saints awarded the name Theologian in the entire history of the Church. The Lydda Icon of the Mother of God is a miraculous image, which the persecutors could not destroy even during the period of iconoclasm.

During the period of renewed iconoclasm, the saint was sent into exile by the heretical Council for his loyalty, where he spent 13 years, and then died. Almost 20 years later, his incorruptible relics were solemnly transferred to Constantinople.

Fast:

Fasting on Friday in memory of the Lord's suffering on the Cross is observed almost throughout the year (except for continuous weeks), and on the days of Lent it is also customary to intensify it.
The monastic charter prescribes dry eating, and the laity, based on the circumstances and advice of the priest, decide for themselves what their necessary minimum is. March 27, Saturday
Parental Saturday of the second week of Great Lent is one of the three memorial Saturdays of Pentecost. The full liturgy is not celebrated on weekdays, and accordingly there is no daily commemoration of the dead at proskomedia and, as a rule, no memorial services are held. .
From Latin this word is translated as “suffering”
, and at the service fragments of the Gospels describing the Passion of Christ are read. During the first Passion of Great Lent, chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew are read.

Memorial Days:

Gregory Palamas - the author of the doctrine of hesychasm (
"smart work"
) as a monastic ascetic practice, which includes purification of the mind and heart, unceasing prayer, silence, attention, invocation of the Lord and leads to communion with God. The Council of all the venerable Kiev-Pechersk fathers, that is, prayer monks who lived in one of the first monasteries of Kievan Rus and gained holiness through their righteous life. The holiday also has a moving date and always falls on the second Sunday of Lenten.

Fast:

On Sunday, fasting people can allow themselves to relax their abstinence, but this does not mean that they can relax. And at the same time, we should not forget that it is not the preparation of a Lenten menu, but the labor of the soul that leads a person to the Lord.

Parents' prayer for deceased children

Lord Jesus Christ, our God, Lord of life and death, Comforter of the afflicted! With a contrite and tender heart I run to You and pray to You: remember. Lord, in Your Kingdom your deceased servant (your servant), my child (name), and create for him (her) eternal memory. You, Lord of life and death, have given me this child. It was your good and wise will to take it away from me. Blessed be Thy name, O Lord. I pray to You, Judge of heaven and earth, with Your endless love for us sinners, forgive my deceased child all his sins, voluntary and involuntary, in word, in deed, in knowledge and ignorance. Forgive, O Merciful One, our parental sins as well, so that they may not remain on our children: we know that we have sinned many times before You, many of whom we have not observed, and have not done, as You commanded us. If our deceased child, ours or his own, for the sake of guilt, lived in this life, working for the world and his flesh, and not more than You, the Lord and his God: if you loved the delights of this world, and not more than Your Word and Your commandments, if you surrendered with the pleasures of life, and not more than with contrition for one’s sins, and in intemperance, vigil, fasting and prayer have been given over to oblivion - I earnestly pray to Thee, forgive, most good Father, all such sins of my child, forgive and weaken, even if you have done other evil in this life . Christ Jesus! You raised up the daughter of Jairus through the faith and prayer of her father. You healed the daughter of the Canaanite wife through faith and the request of her mother: hear my prayer, and do not despise my prayer for my child. Forgive, Lord, forgive all his sins and, having forgiven and cleansed his soul, remove eternal torment and dwell with all Your saints, who have pleased You from the ages, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life: like there is no man like He will live and will not sin, but You are the only One besides all sin: so that when you judge the world, my child will hear Your most beloved voice: come, blessed of My Father, and inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For You are the Father of mercies and generosity. You are our life and resurrection, and we send glory to You with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Borscht with dried mushrooms

Healing by fasting

200 g sauerkraut, 3 potato tubers, 2 medium beets, 2 carrots, 1 onion, 50 g dried wild mushrooms, 2 tbsp. spoons of vegetable oil, 2-3 cm. spoons of tomato paste. 1 teaspoon of dried dill, 2 cloves of garlic, ground black pepper, salt. Wash, peel, and cut beets, carrots, and potatoes into strips.

Finely chop the onion, place in a frying pan with heated vegetable oil, fry lightly, add beets and carrots, pour in a little water, simmer for 10 minutes, add tomato paste, dill, stir. Simmer covered for another 10 minutes. Peel the garlic, wash it, crush it. Pour pre-soaked mushrooms into 2 liters of water, cook until half cooked, add cabbage, cook for 20-25 minutes, add prepared dressing, potatoes, salt and pepper, cook until tender, add garlic.

Sweet peppers stuffed with rice and champignons

Pepper

6-8 pods of sweet pepper, 200 g champignons, 150 g boiled short grain rice, 4 carrots, 2 onions, 2 cm. spoons of tomato sauce, 2 cm. spoons of vegetable oil, salt.

Wash the sweet peppers and remove the seeds. Wash the champignons and cut into small pieces. Peel the onion and cut into half rings.

Grate the carrots on a coarse grater. Mix rice, mushrooms, part of the carrots, salt, and fill the peppers with the mixture. In a frying pan with heated vegetable oil, fry the onions and remaining carrots, add the peppers, pour in a little water, and simmer for 10 minutes. Add tomato sauce and a little water if necessary. Simmer covered for another 10-15 minutes.

Mushrooms are called forest meat due to their high protein content, but it should be remembered that they contain a lot of fiber (lignin and cellulose) and chitin, so people who have digestive problems should be careful when consuming them. In addition, chitin interferes with the absorption of beneficial substances from mushrooms, so nutritionists advise eating dried mushrooms, in which its content is much lower. Mushrooms contain ascorbic acid, vitamins E and D, as well as group B, with more of the latter found in some mushrooms than in cereals. Mushrooms also contain microelements (potassium, calcium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, manganese), antioxidants and polysaccharides that have an antitumor effect, as well as beta-glucan, a substance that has not only anticancer, but also a powerful immunostimulating effect.

Lenten cutlets

“...In our family it is customary to fast. Due to health and age reasons, my husband and I can no longer observe strict fasting, but we definitely refuse meat. We eat fish when we are supposed to. And instead of meat dishes, I prepare dishes from legumes. My signature Lenten dish is chickpea cutlets.

I boil pre-soaked chickpeas in salted water, knead them thoroughly, add grated raw carrots, lightly fried onions, and a little flour. I form cutlets, place them in a heated frying pan with vegetable oil, lightly fry on both sides and cook until done, covered. I make lentil cutlets in the same way.
