Intercessor of the Suffering: Passionate Icon of the Mother of God

Many of our contemporaries visit Orthodox churches. They discovered the power of prayer, turning to the Lord and the Sacraments of the Church.

In prayer they turn not only to God: they pray to the Heavenly Powers - the angels who, after Baptism, are assigned to every Orthodox Christian - and, of course, to the Mother of God, the Mother of God and the Intercessor of the entire human race before God. Dear Brothers and Sisters, we will be very glad if you subscribe to our group in, there you will find even more prayers, icons and other interesting information, here is the address link - Orthodox group! We are also pleased to remind you that on the pages of our Orthodox store you can find all possible Orthodox products!

The Most Holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, stands out among the host of the Heavenly Church. Over many centuries of Christianity, many of Her icons were created, a number of which became miraculous - that is, miracles from the images of the Mother of God were documented and confirmed. These are such icons as “Kazan”, “Iverskaya”, “Tolgskaya”, “Smolenskaya” and many others. Very often, the icon of the Mother of God becomes the patroness of the city - for example, the “Kazan” icon protects Kazan and St. Petersburg, the Smolenskaya icon protects Smolensk. We also remind you that you can buy the Passionate Icon of the Mother of God inexpensively in our store, and also buy any other icon of the Mother of God inexpensively!

Icon of the Passionate meaning of the image

On the icon, the Helper of Sinners, the Mother of God is depicted up to her chest, hugging the Child Christ to her. The face of the Mother of God is mournful, her expressive eyes are sad. The Baby turned away from the Mother and looked at two Angels who were carrying the instruments of execution to Him - the Cross, a cane and a spear.

The theological meaning of the image is similar to other icons of Hodegetria. The Mother of God, with a gesture of her right hand, points those praying to Christ - the only Path to salvation and Life. The Mother of God reveals the Infant God to people, showing that only through faith in the Lord Jesus can one find the true path of life, the road to the Kingdom of Heaven. This Path must be followed in order to achieve salvation. Many other miraculous icons also belong to the iconographic type of Hodegetria, for example, the Seekness of the Lost, the Iverskaya.

The Lord is great Power and great Love, you just need to believe - and that means trust Him with your life and your soul. Christ is not even a soldier who lay down in battle for the sake of his fellow soldiers, His feat is higher: being Almighty, he voluntarily, in order to erase the past and future sins of mankind from the history of the universe, went to humiliation, torture and terrible suffering on the Cross from those whose He created the ancestors. And on the Passionate icon we see the instruments of His execution, we also see how from the very childhood of Christ the Mother of God knew about His future fate.

First prayer

Save, O Lady, and have mercy on Thy servants, and the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops, and the entire priestly and monastic rank, and the faithful governing council, and military leaders, and city governors, and the Christ-loving army and well-wishers, and all Orthodox Christians through the robe of Thy honest protection, and pray, Lady, from You, without seed, Christ our God, incarnate, may gird us with His power from above, against our invisible and visible enemies. O All-Merciful Lady Lady Theotokos, raise us from the depths of sin and deliver us from famine, destruction, from cowardice and flood, from fire and sword, from the presence of foreigners and internecine warfare, and from vain death, and from the attacks of the enemy, and from the corrupting winds , and from deadly plagues, and from all evil. Grant, O Lady, peace and health to Thy servant, all Orthodox Christians, and enlighten their minds and the eyes of their hearts, leading to salvation; and make us Thy sinful servants worthy of the Kingdom of Thy Son, Christ our God: for His power is blessed and glorified, with His Beginningless Father, and with His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Icon of the Passionate, how does the Mother of God help?

The day of the miraculous Icon of Passion is celebrated on August 26 every year.

Passion - this word means both “suffering” and “sins”. That is, the Mother of God releases Her Son to suffer so that He atones for our sins. Christ was condemned by Pilate at the request of the same people who had recently loved and welcomed Him. And after being condemned to death, the Lord was Crucified on the Cross, like the last robber, with ordinary robbers nearby, on Golgotha - the place of execution, the place of execution of criminals, outside the walls of Jerusalem. The apostles left Him, afraid of death, and only the Most Holy Theotokos with the Apostle John the Theologian remained at the Cross. Therefore, we can say that Christ was crucified by slander - the Roman authorities for His non-existent crime, but in fact He aroused the hatred of the Pharisees.

The teaching of the Lord Jesus is a call to repentance, to the love of all people for all people, compassion and pity even for terrible sinners. In response to sincere prayer, first of all, peace, clarity and tranquility will appear in the soul, according to the testimony of many people - and this is truly a miracle that happens to every believer. Also try to talk to a priest if you have difficulties in life and mental anxiety.

The story of a peasant woman

In the Nizhny Novgorod region lived Ekaterina, a sick woman possessed by demons. Exhausted by endless attacks of black epilepsy, the peasant woman began to pray to the Queen of Heaven. Katerina in her prayers promised to go to a monastery if she was healed. The Most Pure Mother of God heard the request and healed the peasant woman.

However, the healed peasant woman quickly forgot the promise made during prayer to the Mother of God and did not go to the monastery. The Virgin Mary appeared to the woman in a dream, reminded her of the promise, reproached her and ordered her to do the following: go to people and tell them about how Mary appeared to her in a dream and ordered everyone living to give up anger and drunkenness, to live in purity of body and soul, and chastity. . Honor church holidays and Sundays.

Catherine did not fulfill the commands of the Mother of God, fearing that people would not believe her. Katerina suffered paralysis as punishment. Then the woman repented, with the last of her strength, with tears in her eyes, she asked for mercy.

The merciful Mother of God once again forgave the peasant woman and granted her healing. The Most Holy Theotokos ordered to find an icon painter with Her image in Nizhny Novgorod and pray. This time Catherine did everything, found the icon, prayed a lot, repented, and the illness soon passed.

Thanks to such incidents, the icon began to be called “Passionate”. After praying before her, many healings are performed.

Prayers to the Passionate Icon

A prayer or a short troparion prayer to the Passionate Icon can be read in Russian online:

Today the icon of the Mother of God shone in the capital city of Moscow, and, like a shining sun, the whole world was illuminated by its discovery. The Heavenly Powers of Angels and the souls of the righteous rejoice invisibly, and we, looking at her, pray with tears: O Most merciful Lady and Lady Theotokos, pray to Christ, our God, who became incarnate through You, that He may give peace and health to all Orthodox people according to the great and His inexpressible mercy.
