The Great Martyr Larisa, judging by her name, which has Greek roots, belonged to the Ostrogothic tribe. Almost no information about her life has been preserved. It is only known that the girl grew up in a family professing Christianity. The girl was distinguished by her extraordinary beauty, kindness, and modesty.
Larisa not only professed Christianity, but also devoted a lot of effort to spreading her faith among people. The girl, helping the suffering, told people about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
With the coming to power of Athanaric, the situation of Christians deteriorated greatly. The pagan ruler fiercely hated believers in Jesus Christ and ordered their destruction and the destruction of Christian churches. At the height of the service, believers heard screams coming from the street. It turned out that a chariot with a pagan statue of Wotan, accompanied by soldiers, drove up to the church. The guards burst into the temple, ordered the believers to vacate the church and worship the pagan idol.
Larisa stood near the exit. One of the barbarians, struck by the beauty of the girl, suggested that she quickly leave the church, warning that the building was going to be burned down. But none of the 308 people moved from their place, continuing to pray. Larisa also refused to come out.
The pagan soldiers slammed the doors and set fire to the church along with the people. The holy sufferer knelt before the images, praying until her last breath. The loud crash of the fire drowned out the groans and screams. The collapsed, charred walls buried the bodies of the martyrs.
Later, the widow of one of the kings, Alla, and her daughter Dukhlida recovered the charred remains and transported them to Syrian territory. For this Alla was stoned to death by the pagans. But her daughter managed to transport part of the relics to the city of Cyzicus, where a church was founded in honor of the holy martyrs.
