What is resentment
Among believers it is often said that offense is a sin.
And that, according to the commandment of Christ, offenses must be forgiven as soon as possible. It would seem that for Christians this is an obvious thing (Sir.28:2, Matt.5:44, Luke 6:28). But is it so easy in practice to get rid of such a destructive feeling as resentment? Is there a prayer for resentment? In Orthodoxy, insult is the spiritual weakness of a person who cannot or does not want to forgive his neighbor for the evil he has caused. Resentment is one of the main signs of pride.
“Insults and humiliations, combined with insults, do not come from the malice of those who offend, but from the weakness of those who are offended” (St. John Chrysostom).
How to get rid of resentment
A feeling of resentment burns the soul from the inside and does not leave a person alone. And instead of struggling with his sins, instead of the joy of a full life and the happiness of communication, a person concentrates only on his resentment. There are truly difficult trials in life. Many people face betrayal from loved ones. Some people have to experience first-hand what slander is. Someone constantly faces the culprit in the death of a loved one.
“And when they came to a place called Lobnoye, there they crucified Him and the villains, one on the right and the other on the left. Jesus said: Father! forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:33-34). “As soon as resentment kindles your heart, remember Christ and His wounds, consider that what you endure is very unimportant in comparison with the suffering of the Master, and then, like water, you will quench your sorrow” (St. Gregory the Theologian).
“Prayer brings joy, for it is communication with God. Let us not accumulate within ourselves the bitterness of resentment towards our neighbor, and let us not interfere in other people’s affairs. Nothing should distract us in our lives. And let's not be afraid. Let's not worry. Let's not suffer. Even when they treat you unfairly, out of passion, do not worry, do not bother. Your happiness and luck do not disappear from this, because we expect it not from people, but from God.”
Athonite Elder Archimandrite Kirik:
“We must pray for our offenders with the words: “Lord, I am to blame, if not in this case, then in another, about which no one knows, only You; Lord God, forgive and have mercy on your servant (name) and have mercy on me with his (her) holy prayers.” And so pray several times.”
The most common grievances
The main component of forgiving people who have offended us is the sincerity of our intentions. After all, how often it happens that we formally say “I forgive,” but the resentment continues to live inside. In this way we only make the problem worse. Therefore, there is no need to accumulate grievances, and if possible, it is worth talking about what happened with the offender.
For example, in a family, the husband constantly reproaches his wife, which greatly hurts and offends her. The other half, instead of talking to her husband, closes herself off and accumulates anger and resentment. It all ends with an inevitable “nuclear explosion” in the form of a major quarrel or even divorce. Such consequences could have been avoided simply by expressing the grievance.
Another common type of grievance is children's grievances against their parents. The child harbors a grudge against his mother, who spent little time, often shouted, and criticized undeservedly. Or when the father leaves the family and the child feels abandoned and unwanted. Such childhood traumas accompany a person throughout his life. If they are not recognized in a timely manner, they can negatively affect the children of the offended person.
But no matter how serious a wound the offense is, you need to make every effort to fight it. Prayer for resentment is only an element of the process. In this work, the Church Sacraments are constant helpers: confession and communion. You can also ask the priest for a conversation and, having told the priest about the tormenting offense, ask for advice and prayer.
Prayer to forgive those who were offended
Religious reading: a prayer to forgive those who were offended to help our readers.
You and I live in a world that is far from ideal, and therefore we ourselves are not ideal. Our words and actions sometimes upset our neighbors.
We all know how easy it is to offend a person with a rude, mocking word, an inappropriate remark, inattention, and how difficult it is to beg forgiveness after that. Even if we offended a person inadvertently, this does not mean that we can leave everything as it is
An unforgiven offense will lie like a heavy stone on the heart, spoil relationships, and sooner or later it will turn into another quarrel.
Before you read the prayer for forgiveness yourself, you need to honestly say to yourself: “I am guilty.” The worst thing a person can do is start to justify themselves.
God showed us the depth of the fall in self-justification through the example of the first people, Adam and Eve, when they violated His only commandment and were called to account. Then Adam said, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
Adam made a mistake even worse than breaking God's commandment: he shifted the blame for his sin onto everyone around him - onto Eve and even onto God Himself, who gave him a wife - instead of praying to God for forgiveness of sins, saying “Forgive me, God."
Before you pray for forgiveness of grievances, you must forgive yourself.
But what should we do if a person really has a far-fetched grievance against us, if we really are not to blame? In this case, the Orthodox Church still teaches us to read prayers for forgiveness of those who have offended us.
We all know very well that the closer, dearer, more beloved a person is, the more difficult it is to reconcile with him.
We advise you to study Prayer before the icon of the Mother of God “Addition of mind”
This happens precisely from excessive closeness - when the one who offended us or the one we offended is constantly nearby, we do not have the opportunity to pause, calm down, in order to objectively assess the situation.
In this case, we can and should pray to God to forgive us, so that the Lord will enlighten both us and the other side of the conflict. Forgiveness plays a huge role in Orthodoxy.
On the last Sunday before Lent, a special rite of forgiveness was even established for everyone who did not have the fortitude to apologize or reconcile on their own during the year.
It is very important from early childhood to teach children to apologize for their wrongdoings, setting an example for them
If you quarrel with a child, stand with him in front of the icon of the Lord and together read a prayer for forgiveness of each other. Thanks to this, the child’s heart will not harden and resentment will not linger in him for long.
Before which icons should you read a prayer for forgiveness?
If you yourself are offended, read a prayer for forgiveness of the offender. Even if at first glance it seems that the conflict is too advanced and there is no chance, remember: water wears away stones, and for God nothing is impossible.
Read the text of the Orthodox prayer for the forgiveness of sins
I confess to You, Lord my God and Creator, in the One Holy Trinity, glorified and worshiped Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit, all my sins, which I have committed all the days of my life, and for every hour, both now and in the past. days and nights, by deed, by word, by thought, by gluttony, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, bickering, disobedience, slander, condemnation, neglect, pride, covetousness, theft, false speech, filthiness, bribery, jealousy, envy, anger, memory of malice, hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, both mental and physical, in the image of my God and Creator I have angered You, and my neighbor for being untruthful: regretting these, I blame myself for You God I represent it to you, and I have the will to repent: then, Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to You: You have come to forgive me my sins with Your mercy, and forgive me from all these things that I have said before You, for You are Good and Lover of Mankind.
Prayer for resentment - a means of struggle
Fighting resentment is hard mental work that requires diligence, and most importantly, God’s help. Therefore, it is necessary to turn to God asking for help. There is no more powerful force on this earth that could heal the soul than prayer to God. By sincerely turning to the Lord, admitting our weaknesses, we will definitely receive help and acquire spiritual strength to fight passions, including insults.
Difficult trials are often given to us to gain wisdom and worldly experience. Therefore, one should accept them with humility.
“Every situation that is difficult for us is allowed to us by the Lord God. It is given so that we can learn a lesson. Many lessons are hard to learn. But the Lord leads us through life by the hand, He is nearby, and He guides us through these unpleasant situations, saving the soul and purifying it through sorrows” (Priest Valery Dukhanin).

How to overcome serious grievances
Priest Valery Dukhanin spoke about a tragic incident in his family. His mother had to go through difficult trials. At the age of 1 year, his older sister died due to doctor's negligence. The doctor did not pay attention to the severe allergic reaction to the injection and gave the girl another injection. The child stopped breathing and died. After the incident, the doctor left their village, but a heavy stone of resentment remained in the mother’s heart. Many years later, the woman came to faith, began visiting church, confessing and receiving communion.
Father Valery said:
“And then one day my mother specially got ready and went to the temple. Going under the arches of the church, she stood in front of the icons, as if before the all-seeing gaze of God, and quietly uttered words of forgiveness to the one whom she could not forgive for a long time. Something was relieved from my heart, and my mother left the church a new person.”
Resentment in monasteries and families
Elder Ephraim of Katunak talked about one incident that he remembered for a long time. There was a tradition in his monastery: after the liturgy, the brethren gathered for friendly meetings, where they talked and drank tea. The elder wanted the monks to remain silent after the service, thereby preserving the grace of the Holy Spirit. He forbade the monks to gather for tea, but received resistance from the monks. This offended him very much; the elder could not find peace of mind for several days.
“I got excited, I was shaking with resentment for two or three days. Finally, with great spiritual impulse, I prayed: “Saint Basil, Saint Theodore the Studite, Saint Irene Chrysovalandi, I strive as you teach, and as a result I fall into this state.” Immediately my soul was filled with peace towards all the fathers, and I felt that I had won a great victory.”
Elena Demina, a mother of four children, speaks about the importance of overcoming resentment through prayer in an interview with the Pravoslavie.Ru portal:
“Every family has to endure difficulties. Throughout our lives, we have had disagreements, quarrels, and moments of cooling off... I am grateful to my husband that we are together. Even in a quarrel, even in a disagreement, we understand that we are together. We are a family, a single whole. There must be unity of views between spouses.
When the burden of responsibility or some kind of sorrow falls, it happens that a person withdraws into himself and moves away. I pray in such situations - I feel that this should not be so, and I ask God to help. It seems so simple, but in reality it is not simple at all. In difficult moments, I didn’t understand and got angry - but you go to confession, listen to the priest and calm down.”

The Importance of Intercessory Prayer
Christians begin every morning with the prayer “Our Father,” sometimes without delving deeply into its meaning, but there are the following words: “And forgive us our sins (debts), as we forgive our debtors.” Christ knew the human soul to the depths of his heart; He understood that resentment and unforgiveness, the desire to repay evil for evil, first of all, are a heavy burden for the offended one.
Only a sincere believer, in whose heart the Savior lives, guided by the Holy Spirit, understands that the wounded are wounded, the offended are offended, and such people must be pitied, praying for them.
This is impossible with the human mind and our own strength, but the Apostle Paul said that Christians can do everything through Jesus who strengthens them. (Phil. 4:13) Only the Holy Spirit helps the offended to forgive the offender, and Jesus shows how to do this in the Sermon on the Mount.
Important! Until a person’s heart is filled with love and the desire to pray for those who offend and hate, the Almighty God will not hear the prayer appeals of the one asking.
Sermon on the Mount or how to forgive those who hate us
Jesus, having climbed the mountain, taught people the basics of a happy, righteous life (Matthew 5:37-47), calling not to avenge an eye for an eye, but to forgive, filling your heart with kindness and patience.
The importance of prayer for those who offend and hate lies precisely in this sermon; if you want to become a son or daughter of the King of Heaven, to receive His Grace on earth and eternal life in Heaven, follow the commandments:
Prayer for those who have offended and hated is needed to a greater extent by the victim himself in order to gain perfection, to put on God’s clothing of righteousness and love for the sake of the future salvation of himself and his descendants.
How prayers to the saints will help
Knowing the weakness and hardness of the human heart, the great Lord left the prayers of saints to help the offended, as an example of forgiveness and kindness. Mary, the Mother of God, forgave people for the terrible torment they inflicted on Her Son.
The prayer “Softening Evil Hearts” will help those who have suffered cruel bullying, insults and humiliation find pieces of goodness and forgiveness in their own hearts.
O Many-sorrowful Mother of God, who surpassed all the daughters of the earth in Her purity and in the multitude of sufferings You brought to the earth! Accept our much-painful sighing and keep us under the shelter of Your mercy, for refuge and warm intercession are not known to You, but as we have boldness towards Him Who was born of You, help and save us with Your prayers, so that we may unfalteringly reach the Kingdom of Heaven, where we with all the saints we will sing praises to the One God in the Trinity, always, now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Daily reading of this prayer will soon bear fruit:
The Seven Arrows Icon of the Mother of God will help you in this prayer to survive your pain by understanding how human arrows pierced the heart of the Mother of God, who later became our Intercessor in heaven.
The prayer of Ephraim the Syrian is also intended to help overcome the pain of grief or resentment. Saint Ephrem said that patience, humility, and love for people are the very qualities of a Christian walking along the road of eternal life.
Sirin's prayer calls on the Lord to help the offended overcome pain and help those who hate to free themselves from all evil, while at the same time having mercy on them.
Have mercy, Lord, on those who hate me and envy me! Have mercy, Lord, on those who slander me and cause me offense! Do not do anything evil to them for Your unworthy servant; but according to Their ineffable mercy and according to Their immeasurable goodness, neither in this life nor in the next century, may they not tolerate evil for me, a sinner! Sanctify them with Your mercy and autumn with Your grace, O All-Good One, because before all, blessed are You forever and ever. Amen.
Every evening before going to bed, you should ask the Lord for forgiveness, because it is unknown whether the next morning will come,
The prayer “Forgive me, O Lord who loves mankind” will close all the doors to unforgiveness and help you end the past day with peace of mind.
Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord Lover of Mankind. Do good to those who do good. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petitions for salvation and eternal life. Visit those who are infirm and grant healing. Manage the sea as well. For travelers, travel. Grant forgiveness of sins to those who serve and forgive us. Those who commanded us unworthy to pray for them, have mercy according to Your great mercy. Remember, Lord, our fathers and brothers who have fallen before us, and give them rest, where the light of Your face shines. Remember, Lord, our captive brothers, and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, us, humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy mind, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Thy saints, for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages. . Amen.
Farewell, and you will be forgiven!

Why you need to pray for offenders and haters
The Gospel of Matthew quotes the words of Jesus, which contain the essence of Christian doctrine. The basis of the lifestyle of believers in Christ should be love. Jesus Christ taught to be merciful to your enemies: to forgive yourself and to pray to God to forgive those who hate and offend. Without this, it is impossible to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and enter the Kingdom of Heaven after death.
All holy ascetics adhered to this rule. In biographies that have survived to this day, it is said that spiritual shepherds never held a grudge against their offenders and persecutors. Christian saints argued that anger and malice are not natural qualities of a person, but a temptation to sin from the Evil One.
Prayer requests will be heard by the Lord if the soul and thoughts of an Orthodox believer are freed from indignation and resentment at the unfair words and actions of other people. Reciprocal hatred corrodes the soul like rusting iron, putting a barrier to spiritual communication with Heavenly patrons.
Prayers help to overcome hostility towards those who offend and hate us:
- to the Lord;
- Mother of God;
- To the Holy Saints.
During her lifetime, the Mother of God was benevolent, patient with people, and prayed for sinners before Her Son. Appealing to the Heavenly Queen gives peace to the soul and softens the attitude towards people. Orthodox believers should not take lies, slander, and deception to heart. After praying to holy images, you must try to let go of the offense.
Having forgiven the offending or hating person in your soul, it is advisable to find a way to establish contact with him and reconcile. If this does not work out because of a negative reaction to the approach of a person who does not like you, then you should forget about him. Forgetting is the best way to get rid of hatred towards someone.
Forgiving offenders is an example of generosity that raises and maintains the moral state of a Christian.
A person who prays for those who hate him will have a more positive outlook on the world:
- will stop remembering words and actions that humiliate his pride;
- learn to be more tolerant of other people's shortcomings;
- will think more about good things.
Prayers for those who offend and hate us are read privately, in church. At home, before going to bed, the Lord is asked: “Forgive those who hate and offend us, Lord, Lover of Mankind.”
The ritual is explained by the fact that human life is in the hands of the Lord. No one knows when the soul will leave the mortal body. The prayer is said so that in the event of death during sleep, one does not leave the earthly world with grievances in the heart. The Lord will forgive our sins if we forgive them to others.
