During his lifetime, he performed complex operations and always fought for a person’s life as long as the slightest hope remained. People said that Luke had the hands of God. He conducted amazingly valuable medical research, the results of which were simply amazing and were useful in medical practice for many generations.
But it so happened that after some time he nevertheless put the church world first and took monastic vows. Therefore, he is better known as an apostle and evangelist. But the medical past of St. Luke was not forgotten by people. And today Christians pray to him in order to receive his support during the operation and recover faster after it.

The Importance of Prayer
The most important thing in the life of each of us is the health of the people dear to us. In prayer for a loved one, we express all our love and compassion, seek help and hope for salvation. When offering prayers to higher powers, do not expect that all your problems will be solved as if by magic. Don't stop praying and have faith that God will show you mercy.
A prayerful appeal to higher powers is a frank confession before the Lord, repentance of committed sins and mistakes, forgiveness of the guilty and remission of all grievances. Orthodox prayer helps to heal not only the body, but also the soul of the sufferer. Words raised before the faces of heavenly patrons in difficult moments of life reveal the innermost hopes and aspirations of the human soul.
The appeal offered to the Lord helps to cope with the fear of death - the greatest fear of any person. Worried about what the results of the operation will be and whether it is worth agreeing to it, the patient suffers and cannot make a decision, which is why his condition worsens significantly.
Prayer will help you calm down and gain mental strength to resist the illness. After reading church texts, divine grace descends on a sick person, helping to cope with the fear of the unknown and a feeling of helplessness, and to survive the bodily pain that accompanies many illnesses.
Trust in the divine powers and ask them for help in healing. While doctors will take care of your physical recovery, your soul will be in the hands of the Lord. The main thing is sincere faith that the prayer request will be heard. Heavenly intercessors will definitely help you and make sure that the operation is successful and you have no further health complications.
Don't let sad thoughts take over your mind, drive them away. Do not think about death or the unsuccessful outcome of surgery, be positive. Do not be angry and do not complain to the divine powers because you are sick; illness is a test that God sends to those who suffer. Don't let despair and despondency consume your soul.
Orthodox prayers have truly miraculous power and help heal even the most severe illnesses. Praying for the granting of health and a successful outcome of the operation is allowed not only during church services, but also at home. You can read church texts both for yourself and for the health of your loved ones. If you are going to offer prayers for loved ones, keep in mind that in order for your request to be heard, the person must be baptized according to Orthodox customs.

Prayer before surgery to the Guardian Angel
Do not leave me, O my Guardian Angel, do not forget the mistakes of my youth and my past sins.
My hope rests in You;
You are my strength and my refuge.
Save me from the shackles of the sinner and from the malice of the evil spirit.
You are my patron, given to me in baptism.
Defeat my enemies who besiege me; enlighten my mind, wandering in the darkness; turn Your holy face to me, so that I may shed tears and pray before You.
Send me Your voice, my holy Angel, so that I may pray to You;
Lead me and I will fulfill your desire;
Show me the way and I will follow You.
But remember me, Holy Giver of my life, breathe into me a living feeling of Your love and present to the Lord the tears of my sorrow:
He will not despise my sacrificial tears, but in His mercy He will forgive me my sins.
Amen.

O blessed confessor, holy Father Luke, great saint of Christ!
With repentance we bow the knees of our hearts and, kneeling before Your holy and worthy relics, we fervently pray to You, like a father’s child:
Hear us sinners and convey our prayer to the merciful and loving God of people, to whom You now belong in the joy of saints and with the face of angels.
We believe that You love us with the same love that You loved all Your neighbors when You were on earth.
Ask Christ our God
So that he establishes in his holy Orthodox Church the spirit of righteous faith and piety:
to defend the righteousness of believers, to strengthen the weak and infirm in the faith, to instruct the ignorant, to exhort the rebellious.

To those who mourn - comfort, and to those who do not mourn - comfort.
Comfort for the mourning, healing for the sick, return to the path of truth for the lost, blessing for parents,
children in the fear of the Lord, the poor and needy, help and intercession.
Grant us all Your archpastoral and holy blessing, so that we may be protected by You from evil and avoid all enmity and discord, heresy and schism.
Grant us to go through the race of earthly life, guide us on the path leading to the villages of the righteous, deliver us from the darkness of the air and pray to Almighty God for us:
So that in eternal life with you we constantly glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, to whom be all glory, honor and power forever and ever.

Grant us Your blessing, so that we may be delivered from the deceit of the evil one and avoid all enmity and strife, heresy and schism.
Guide us on the path of salvation and pray to God for us, so that in eternal life we, together with You, experience the unceasing glory of the one and indivisible Holy Trinity - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Petition for a loved one
A prayer offered by his loved ones for the speedy recovery of a sick person during a surgical operation has a special healing power. The Church blesses believers who ask heavenly powers for help in healing parents, children, and friends. Uniting in prayer, the family expresses to the Lord their sincere faith in divine providence.
To ensure that your prayer is heard during your loved one’s surgery, be sure to attend a church service. Even if you have never visited a temple before, do not be shy and do not be afraid to make mistakes and do something wrong. At first, the prayers heard from the lips of priests and parishioners will seem unclear to you, but gradually you will get used to it and begin to understand the essence of what is happening. In the church shop you can purchase a “Prayer Book” - a collection of church texts for different occasions, candles and faces of heavenly patrons. Here you will be told which saint you need to seek help so that the operation of a loved one in the hospital is successful.
After collective prayer, at the end of the service, be sure to take communion and confess your sins. You should read a prayer for the health of loved ones with a pure soul and thoughts. After the service, you are allowed to place candles in front of the holy images. Be sure to venerate the icon of the Son of God and the Most Holy Theotokos. Pray for a successful outcome from the surgery. Ask your heavenly helpers to grant your loved one health and long life.
Church candles must be placed in the following order: first to Jesus Christ, then - in front of the face of the Mother of God, then - to the images with holy archangels and healers. If you do not know the text of the church prayer by heart, ask for help in your own words. It is important that they come from a pure heart.
When planning to offer a prayer for the healing of another person at home, do not forget to ask for a blessing for this matter from the rector of the temple. It is better to do this on the day when the church service will take place. Be sure to donate “Sorokoust” and “The Indestructible Psalter” at the church shop for the health of a person who is about to undergo a major operation. You are allowed to order a liturgy, which will be celebrated by church employees.
You can submit health notes from doctors operating on a loved one. The Lord will give them strength to successfully resolve their planned matter. The clergy recommend ordering a special prayer service called “Before surgery.”
After the operation is successfully completed, do not forget to thank the higher powers for the assistance provided. Do not stop praying for the sick person; he will have a difficult period of post-operative recovery.

For we cannot find any other help, no other hope, except in You, Most Holy Virgin, powerful Helper and Intercessor of Christians.
Deliver all those who pray to You with faith from fallen sins, from the machinations of evil people, from all temptations, sorrows and troubles, and from vain death.

Rules for reading sacred texts
If you are going to offer prayers to the Lord for your own speedy recovery, keep in mind that your petition should not be a set of unrelated sentences. To ensure that the operation is successful, think in advance about the words with which you would like to address your heavenly patrons. Try to visit the temple, be sure to confess and take communion. Use the collection of prayers, which contains church texts in Russian.
Continue to offer petitions to Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos at home and while in the hospital. To ensure that your prayer during the operation is heard by divine forces, follow a number of rules.
- Before turning to the saints for help, free your mind from extraneous thoughts. Do not allow any doubts, do not look for evidence of the existence of divine powers, just believe that the prayer coming from the depths of your heart will not remain unanswered.
- While reading the prayer, go alone. Be sure to turn off your phone and make sure no one interrupts you. If you are already in the hospital and cannot be left alone, ask other patients not to talk to you for a few minutes.
- If it’s hard for you to remember texts by heart, use a special church collection and just read them. The prayer into which you have invested a piece of your heart and soul is powerful.
- If you have learned the sacrament of baptism, start wearing a cross. Before surgery, remove it from the chain and put it on a cord or strong woolen thread.
- When reading prayer at home, do it while standing. Contact the icon of Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, Matronushka, St. Nicholas and the healer Panteleimon. Representatives of the fair sex should cover their heads with a scarf. Sick people who are in a medical facility are allowed to pray while sitting or lying down.
- Offer a prayer request in front of the holy images. Be sure to take those miraculous icons with you to the hospital, depending on which saint you are addressing. Keep them next to your bed and not hidden in your bag or cabinet.
- The best time to read prayers is early morning and evening. Start your day by asking the Savior to bless you with new achievements and to be healed. Before going to bed, analyze your thoughts and actions, repent of the mistakes you have made. Remember that upon completion of communication with heavenly patrons, you must cross yourself 3 times. Collect holy water from the church in advance during the service. It has miraculous properties and will help restore your health after surgery. Blessed water should be drunk on an empty stomach, before the first meal.
Before a complex operation, you are allowed to ask your Guardian Angel for help and intercession throughout the day. Turn to the power of prayer as you are wheeled into the operating room. This will help you get rid of feelings of fear, uncertainty and hopelessness. Repeat until you fall asleep from the anesthesia: “Lord, have mercy.” Be sure to say a prayer of thanks when you come to your senses after the operation is completed.
Prayers after surgery
After the operation, prayers are read to God, Saint Panteleimon the Healer, and Saint John of Kronstadt. They help the patient recover faster.
Prayer to Saint Panteleimon
O great benefactor of Christ, merciful bearer of the Passion and physician of Panteleimon!
Have mercy on me, the innocent servant of God (name), hear my groans and cries, have mercy on us, Heavenly, Supreme Physician of our souls and bodies, Christ our God, and grant me healing from the painful illness that oppresses me.
Accept the prayer of this unworthy sinner like no other.
Come pay me a gracious visit. Do not despise my sinful pains, anoint them with the oil of Thy mercy and heal me;
So that, being healthy in body and soul, I, by the grace of God, spend the rest of my days in repentance and pleasing to God, and so that I see a blessed end to my life.
Hey Father of God!
I pray to Christ God that through Your intercession my body will be healed and my soul will be saved.
Amen.
Prayer to the Lord
Lord, our Creator, I ask for Your help, grant complete healing to the servant of God (name), wash her blood with Your rays.
Only with Your help will healing come to her.
Touch her with your miraculous power and bless all her paths to long-awaited salvation, healing and recovery.
Give her body health, her soul blessed lightness, her heart Your balm.
Her pain will subside forever, and her strength will return, all her wounds will be healed, and Your holy help will come.
Your rays from heaven will reach her, give her strong protection, bless her with freedom from disease, strengthen her faith.
May the Lord hear my words. Glory to you.
Amen.
Prayer to Panteleimon
If you turn to Saint Panteleim before the operation, a real miracle can happen. This man lived in the 3rd century. He converted to Christianity and devoted himself to caring for the sick. Panteleimon sincerely believed that with the help of prayer one could heal a person’s soul and body, and this faith helped him in the most difficult situations.
You must pray to Panteleimon in front of his image. His icons are in many churches and church shops. But if you don't have an image, that's okay. Rewrite the prayer and read it with gratitude. Words of prayer:
O great servant of Christ, merciful Panteleimon, passion-bearer and doctor! Have mercy on me, the sinful servant of God (name), hear my groans and tears, propitiate the Heavenly, Supreme Physician of our soul and body, Christ our God, and give me healing from a cruel oppressive illness. Accept the unworthy prayer of the most sinful of all people. Come and see me with a kind visit. Do not disdain my sinful wounds, anoint them with the oil of Your mercy and heal me; May I be healthy in soul and body, until the end of my days, with the help of God’s grace, I will be able to move into repentance and please God, and I will be worthy of perceiving a good end to my life. She is a saint of God! Pray to God Christ to grant me the health of my body and the salvation of my soul through your intercession. Amen.
The mother or father of a child who requires surgery can contact Panteleimon. After prayer, you need to give the child a glass of holy water, and then add it to food and drink. Before surgery, the child is advised to select the full text of the prayer as follows:
“The Holy Great Martyr and Healer of God Panteleimon, who imitated Christ with mercy and free healing of human ailments!
Look at us and listen to us with your kind hearts, people who fervently pray in front of your holy icon. Ask us to Christ God, next to Whom you stand with the angels in heaven, for forgiveness of our sins and our iniquities, heal the physical and mental ailments of all the servants of God (names): whom we call in prayer today and who stand and pray to you and all the Orthodox Christians asking for your intercession before God. Give us and our children (son - name) with holy prayers health and strength of soul and body, instruct in faith and charity, give everything necessary for earthly life and salvation in Heaven, so that, having received and joyfully accepted from you great and abundant mercies, they always glorified you and the Lord, the Giver of all the blessings glorified by His saints, our God - the Holy Trinity. Amen"
