Texts of prayers and akathist to the holy Apostle Thomas, his life and veneration

Prayer to Saint Apostle Thomas

“Oh, famous and glorious Apostle of Christ Thomas! When at the end of the ages God came to man and chose you as His disciples and gave you the power to heal the sick, cleanse lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons, then not for this sake, but most of all You cleave to Christ through love, with the desire to follow Him even to death . For this reason, even if by Divine permission you did not see the disciples of the resurrected Savior with others, even if you denied this belief, until you put your finger into the wounds of the nails and put your hand into His side, otherwise the Lord fulfill the request of your heart and firmly establish your faith . Moreover, we pray to you: open the eyes of faith to us, so that what is invisible to the flesh may appear to us; give us hope for God’s condescension, so that sinful despair does not consume us; Reveal to us the bliss of love, which is as strong as death, and which alone has power over it, so that having served Christ on earth, we too may build for ourselves the blood of Heaven and with you and all the saints we will most honorably glorify It is also the magnificent name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen."

What do they pray to the Apostle Thomas for?

The Apostle Thomas (nicknamed the Twin) before the beginning of his service to Christ was a fisherman from the Galilean city of Pansada. The Lord chose him as his disciple, one of the first twelve apostles (see Mark 3:13–19). Thomas was distinguished by his determination and devotion to the Lord. For example, when Lazarus, a friend of Jesus Christ, died in Bethany, the Lord prepared to go there. The apostles knew that the Jews were already seeking the death of Jesus, and they began to dissuade Him. Only Thomas alone said: “Let us go and die with him” (John 11:16). When the Lord appeared to the apostles after His Resurrection, Thomas was not with them. The other disciples told him that they had seen Jesus, but Thomas, distrustful by nature, answered them: “Unless I see in His hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the marks of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I won’t believe it” (cf. John 20:24–25). Eight days later, the Lord visited the apostles again, passing through the locked doors, and said to Thomas: “Put your finger here and see My hands; give me your hand and place it in my side; and do not be an unbeliever, but a believer. Thomas answered Him: My Lord and my God! Jesus says to him: You believed because you saw Me; Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (cf. John 20:26-29). They specifically pray to the Holy Apostle Thomas when they are troubled by doubts in faith, lack of faith and unbelief, since he himself managed to overcome these mental states. He is asked to save those praying from the temptations of the devil, temptations and falls, to ask for them help from above during times of unbelief and the ability to live according to the commandments of the Lord, as well as other spiritual benefits.

Prayer to the Apostle Thomas

About the holy Apostle of Christ Thomas! We pray to you: save and protect us with your prayers from the temptations of the devil and the falls of sin, and ask us, servants of God, for help from above in times of unbelief, so that we may not stumble over the stone of temptation. I know, but we are steadily following the saving path of Christ’s commandments, until we reach the blessed abode of heaven. Hey, Apostle of Saviours! Do not disgrace us, but be our helper and protector in all our lives and help us to live a pious and godly life in this temporary death, receive a Christian death and be honored with a good answer at the Last Judgment of Christ, so that we glorify the magnificent name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

10 Jesus said: I cast fire into the world, and behold, I guard it until it burns. 11. Jesus said: This heaven will pass away, and what is above it will pass away, and those who are dead will not live, and those who are alive will not die. 12. In (those) days you ate dead things, you made them alive. When you are in the light, what will you do? On this day you are one, you become two. When you become two, what will you do? 13. The disciples said to Jesus: We know that you will leave us. Who is the one who will be great above us? Jesus said to them: In the place where you have come, you will go to Jacob the just, because of whom heaven and earth came into being. 14. Jesus said to his disciples: Like me, tell me who I am like. Simon Peter said to him: You are like a just angel. Matthew said to him: You look like a wise philosopher. Thomas said to him: Lord, my lips will never be able to say who you are like. Jesus said: I am not your master, for you have drunk, you have drunk from the boiling fountain that I measured. And he took him, took him away (and) said three words to him. When Thomas came to his companions, they asked him: What did Jesus say to you? Thomas said to them: If I tell you one of the words that he said to me, you will take stones, throw (them) at me, fire will come out of the stones (and) burn you. 15. Jesus said: If you fast you will create sin within you, and if you pray you will be condemned, and if you give alms you will harm your spirit. And if you come to a certain land and go to the villages, if you are received, eat what is set out for you. Treat those who are sick among them. For what comes into your mouth will not defile you, but what comes out of your mouth will defile you. 16. Jesus said: When you see one who is not born of woman, fall on your face (and) honor him; he is your Father. 17. Jesus said: Perhaps people think that I came to throw peace into the world, and they do not know that I came to throw division, fire, sword, war into the earth. For there will be five in the house: three against two, and two against three. Father against son and son against father; and they will stand as the only ones. 18. Jesus said: I will give you that which no eye has seen, and that which no ear has heard, and that which no hand has touched, and that which has not entered into the heart of man. 19. The disciples said to Jesus: Tell us what our end will be. Jesus said: Have you discovered the beginning so that you can seek the end? For in the place where the beginning is, there will be the end. Blessed is he who stands at the beginning: and he will know the end, and he will not taste death. 20. Jesus said: Blessed is he who was before he came into being. 21. If you are my disciples (and) if you listen to my words, these stones will serve you. 22. For you have five trees in the garden, which are motionless in summer and winter, and their leaves do not fall. He who knows them will not taste death. 23. The disciples said to Jesus: Tell us what the kingdom of heaven is like. He said to them: It is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds. When it falls on cultivated ground, it produces a large branch (and) becomes a shelter for the birds of the air. 24. Mary said to Jesus: Who are your disciples like? He said: They are like little children who have settled down in a field that does not belong to them. When the home team comes, they will say: Leave us our field. They expose themselves to them in order to leave it to them and give them their field. 25. Therefore I say: If the owner of a house knows that a thief is coming, he will watch until he comes, and he will not allow him to enter his kingdom's house to carry away his things. But be vigilant before the world; gird up your loins with great strength, so that robbers do not find a way to come to you. For what you need will be found. 26. May there be a knowledgeable person among you! When the fruit was ripe, it came quickly, - his sickle was in his hand, - (and) he took it away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear! 27. Jesus saw babies suckling milk. He said to his disciples: These babies who suck milk are like those who enter the kingdom. They said to him: What if we are babes, will we enter the kingdom? Jesus said to them: When you make the two one, and when you make the inside as the outside, and the outside as the inside, and the top as the bottom, and when you make man and woman one, so that man is not male and woman was not a woman, when you make eyes instead of an eye, and a hand instead of an arm, and a leg instead of a leg, an image instead of an image, then you will enter (the kingdom). 28. Jesus said: I will choose you one for a thousand and two for ten thousand, and they will stand as one. 29. His disciples said: Show us the place where you are, for we need to find it. He said to them: He who has ears, let him hear! There is a light within the man of light, and it illuminates the whole world. If it does not illuminate, then there is darkness. 30, Jesus said: Love your brother as your soul. Guard it like the apple of your eye. 31. Jesus said: You see the speck in your brother's eye, but you do not see the plank in your own eye. When you take the plank out of your own eye, then you will see how to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 32. If you do not fast from the world, you will not find the kingdom. If you don't make the Sabbath the Sabbath, you won't see the Father. 33. Jesus said: I stood in the midst of the world, and I appeared to them in the flesh. I found them all drunk, I found none of them thirsty, and my soul was saddened for the children of men. For they are blind in their hearts and they do not see that they come into the world empty; they seek to leave the world empty again. But now they are drunk. When they reject their wine, then they will repent. 34. Jesus said: If the flesh came into being for the sake of the spirit, it is a miracle. If the spirit is for the sake of the body, this is a miracle of miracles. But I, I wonder how so much wealth can be contained in so much poverty. 35. Jesus said: Where there are three gods, there are gods. Where there are two or one, I am with him. 36. Jesus said: There is no prophet accepted in his village. The doctor does not treat those who know him. 37. Jesus said: A city built on a high mountain, fortified, cannot fall, and it cannot be hidden. 38. Jesus said: Whatever you hear with your ear, proclaim it to the other ear from your housetops. For no one lights a lamp (or) puts it under a bushel, and no one puts it in a secret place, but puts it on a lamp stand, so that all who come in and go out may see its light. 39. Jesus said: If a blind man leads a blind man, both fall into a pit. 40. Jesus said: It is impossible for anyone to enter the house of a strong man and take him by force unless he binds his hands. Then (only) he will plunder his house. 41. Jesus said: Do not worry from morning to evening and from evening to morning about what you will put on yourselves. 42. His disciples said: On what day will you appear to us and on what day will we see you? Jesus said: When you are naked and not ashamed and take your clothes and lay them at your feet like little children and trample them, then (you will see) the son of him who lives, and you will not be afraid. 43. Jesus said: Many times you have desired to hear these words that I speak to you, and you have no one else from whom (you can) hear them. The days will come - you will look for me, you will not find me. 44. Jesus said: The Pharisees and the scribes took the keys of knowledge. They hid them and did not enter and did not allow those who wanted to enter. Be wise as serpents and pure as doves. 45. Jesus said: The vine was planted without the Father, and it did not grow. She will be uprooted, (and) she will die. 46. Jesus said: He who has it in his hand will be given it to him; and the one who does not have, the little that he has will be taken from him. 47. Jesus said: Be passers-by. 48. His disciples said to him: Who are you who tell us this? (Jesus said to them): From what I tell you, you do not know who I am? But you have become like the Jews, for they love the tree (and) hate its fruit, they love the fruit (and) hate the tree. 49. Jesus said: He who blasphemes against the Father will be forgiven, and he who blasphemes against the Son will be forgiven. But the one who blasphemed the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either on earth or in heaven. 50. Jesus said: They do not gather grapes from thorn trees, nor reap figs from camel thorns. They don't bear fruit. A good person brings out good things from his treasure. An evil person brings out bad things from his evil treasure, which is in his heart, (and) he speaks bad things, because out of the abundance of his heart he brings out bad things. 51. Jesus said: From Adam to John the Baptist, of those born of women, there is none greater than John the Baptist. <…> But I said: He who becomes small among you will know the kingdom and will be higher than John. 52. Jesus said: It is impossible for a man to ride on two horses, to draw two bows, and it is impossible for a slave to serve two masters: either he will honor one and be rude to the other. No person who drinks old wine immediately strives to drink new wine. And they do not put new wine into old wineskins, lest they burst, and they do not put old wine into new wineskins, lest they spoil it. Do not put an old patch on new clothes, because a tear will occur. 53. Jesus said: If two are at peace with each other in the same house, they will say to the mountain: Move! - and she will move. 54, Jesus said: Blessed are the only and the chosen, for you will find the kingdom, for from it you (and) you will return there again. 55. Jesus said: If they say to you: Where did you come from? - tell them: We came from the light, from the place where the light originated from itself. He... is in their image. If they say to you: Who are you? - say: We are his children, and we are the chosen ones of the living Father. If you are asked: What is the sign of your Father who is in you? - tell them: This is movement and rest. 56. His disciples said to him: On what day will there be rest for those who are dead? And on what day does the new world come? He said to them: The (peace) that you are waiting for has come, but you have not known it. 57 His disciples said to him: Twenty-four prophets spoke in Israel, and they all spoke about you. He said to them: You have left the one who is alive before you, and you have spoken about those who are dead. 58. His disciples said to him: Is circumcision beneficial or not? He said to them: If it had been useful, their father would have conceived them circumcised in their mother. But true circumcision in the spirit revealed its full benefit. 59. Jesus said: Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of heaven. 60. Jesus said: He who did not hate his father and his mother cannot be my disciple, and he who did not hate his brothers and his sisters and did not bear his cross as I did will not become worthy of me. 61. Jesus said: He who knows the world has found a corpse, and he who has found a corpse, the world is not worthy of him. 62. Jesus said: The Kingdom of the Father is like a man who has (good) seeds. His enemy came at night and sowed the chaff along with the good seeds. The man did not allow them (the ministers) to pull out the chaff. He said to them: Do not come, lest when you pull up the tares, you also pull up the wheat with them! For on the day of harvest the tares will appear, they will be pulled out and burned. 63. Jesus said: Blessed is the man who has labored: he has found life. 64. Jesus said: Look to him who is alive while you live, so that you do not die - seek to see him! And you will not be able to see the Samaritan who carries the lamb (and) enters Judea. He said to his disciples: (Why) is he with the lamb? They told him: To kill him and eat him. He told them: While he is alive, he will not eat him, but (only) if he kills him, (and) he (the lamb) becomes a corpse. They said: Otherwise he will not be able to strike. He said to them: You also seek a place of rest, so that you do not become a corpse and be eaten.
65. Jesus said: Two will rest on a bed: one will die, the other will live. Salome said: Who are you, man, and whose son are you? You ascended to my bed and you ate at my table. Jesus said to her: I am he who came from him who is equal; I have been given what belongs to my Father. (Salome said:) I am your student. (Jesus said to her:) Therefore I say this: When it becomes empty, it will be filled with light, but when it becomes divided, it will be filled with darkness. 66. Jesus said: I speak my secrets... mystery. What your right hand will do, let your left hand not know what it is doing. 67. Jesus said: There was a rich man who had much goods. He said: I use my goods to sow, harvest, plant, and fill my barns with fruit, so that I will not need anything. This is what he thought in his heart. And that same night he died. He who has ears, let him hear! 68. Jesus said: The man had guests, and when he had prepared dinner, he sent his servant to invite the guests. He went to the first one, he said to him: My master invites you. He said: I have money for the merchants, they will come to me in the evening, I will go (and) give them an order: I refuse dinner. Yun went to another, he said to him: My master invited you. He told him: I bought a house, and they ask me during the day. I'll have no time. He went to another, he said to him: My master invites you. He told him: My friend will be celebrating the wedding, and I will be hosting the dinner. I won't be able to come. I'm skipping dinner. He went to another, he said to him: My master invites you. He told him: I bought a village, I will go collect income. I won't be able to come. I refuse. The slave came, he said to his master: Those whom you invited to dinner refused. The master said to his slave: Go out onto the roads, bring whomever you find, so that they can have dinner. Buyers and traders will not enter my father's places. 69. He said: A good man had a vineyard; he gave it to the workers so that they could process it and so that he could receive its fruit from them. He sent his servant so that the workers would give him the fruit of the vineyard. They grabbed his slave, they beat him, a little more - and they would have killed him. The slave came, he told his master. His master said: Perhaps they did not recognize him (in the original: Perhaps he did not recognize them). He sent another slave. The workers beat this one up. Then the owner sent his son. He said: Maybe they will be ashamed of my son. These workers, when they found out that he was the heir of the vineyard, seized him, they killed him. He who has ears, let him hear! 70. Jesus said: Show me the stone that the builders threw away! He is the cornerstone. 71. Jesus said: He who knows everything, being in need of himself, needs everything. 72. Jesus said: Blessed are you when you are hated (and) persecuted. And they will not find the place where you were persecuted.

I am everything: everything came out of me and everything returned to me. Cut the tree, I am there; lift the stone and you will find me there. 82. Jesus said: Why did you go into the field? To see reeds blown by the wind, and to see a man wearing soft clothes? (Look, your) kings and your noble people - they wear soft clothes and they will not be able to know the truth! 83. A woman in the crowd said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the (breasts) that nursed you. He said to her: Blessed are those who have heard the word of the Father (and) kept it in truth.
