What happened to the Roman soldier who led the execution of Christ?

In the modern world, questions have begun to arise with renewed vigor: who is really to blame for the death of Christ? Some Christians are beginning to accuse the entire Jewish people of this with renewed vigor, thereby possibly provoking new persecution of them. But there are irrefutable things that can touch our hearts.

To understand this issue, we must first turn to the scriptures, where most of the knowledge about the death of Jesus is found. The biblical scriptures, both religious and secular, provide us with some of the evidence for this ancient crime. So, here are the answers to some popular questions regarding the death of Jesus Christ, some of which will surprise you.

Did Judas kill Christ?

Judas, as the Scriptures say, was one of the apostles of Christ. However, he did not personally kill Jesus, although he was also responsible for the death of the Messiah. As Matthew writes: “One of the 12, named Judas Iscariot, came to the high priests and said: “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?” After this, the high priests weighed out 30 pieces of silver to him. Having received the money, he began to look for an opportunity to betray his Teacher.” But from the very beginning, Jesus knew that it would be Judas who would betray Him, who would deliberately plot the death of Jesus. Judas will subsequently suffer greatly from this betrayal in eternity. Judas became the provocateur of Christ's death, so he is responsible for His death.

Washing the feet

This is a famous and very significant episode of the Last Supper. According to Eastern traditions, such a ritual has existed since ancient times, symbolizing hospitality.

The Gospel describes that Jesus took off his outer clothing, girded himself and began to wash the feet of his disciples, drying them with a towel. When Peter asked whether he should wash his feet, Jesus replied that the meaning of his actions would only be understood by the disciples later.

It is believed that at that moment he already knew his traitor, which is why he told his disciples that not all of them were pure. Only after finishing the procedure, he explained that he had set an example of humility, and that now they should do the same.

The symbolic meaning of this action lies in the ritual ablution before participation in the ritual. In this case, before the Easter meal. When the participants arrived at the place of the sacred meal, their feet were defiled, so they had to be washed. By deliberately taking the position of a servant rather than a master, Jesus changed the relationships between classes. The fundamental idea of this New Testament episode is the idea of being a servant to your neighbor, regardless of your own position in society.

Did Satan kill Jesus?

The Bible says that Judas handed Jesus over to the Jewish authorities. But also in the Gospel of Luke it is written that “Satan entered into Judas, whose name was Iscariot, who belonged to the number twelve. And he went to the chief priests and officers and invited them to betray Jesus.” John also writes that “the devil... put betrayal in the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon...” Satan entered into him. After the Last Supper, Judas left the refectory and went to commit his terrible act. So Satan is also responsible for the death of Jesus.

Last Supper

One of the most famous episodes of the New Testament is the Last Supper, which many artists depicted in their paintings. Leonardo da Vinci's most famous work is in the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan.

This is the last meal of Jesus Christ with his disciples, during which the sacrament of Communion was first established, the Savior himself read sermons about Christian love and humility, predicting the betrayal of one of his disciples, as well as the future of the Christian church and the whole world.

Christ's disciples John and Peter, to whom the teacher instructed them, prepared the festive Easter meal. In the evening Jesus lay down, and the twelve apostles with Him.

Was Jesus killed by Jewish leaders?

Jewish priests and leaders can also be blamed for the death of Jesus. And these were not only the sectarian Sadducees, but also the Pharisees and scribes who had long planned the death of Christ. In the Gospel of Mark it is written that after Jesus healed the sick man in the synagogue, the Pharisees immediately came out and began to conspire against Him, the purpose of which was to destroy Jesus.

This happened on the Saturday before Easter. The Pharisees gathered a council at which they heatedly discussed how they would kill Christ. They wanted to secretly seize Him and kill Him right away. This was long before the crucifixion of Jesus. Christ told the Jews that they were looking for Him to kill Him because He told them the truth. During Easter night, Jesus and his apostles went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray.

The Pharisees sent an army there to arrest Jesus. At night, at the Jewish trial, He was sentenced to death. At sunrise, the chief priests and elders gathered against Jesus to kill Him. Having passed judgment, they handed Christ over to Pilate, the Roman governor who was in Jerusalem during the celebration of Easter.

The chief priests told Pilate that Jesus was preparing a rebellion against the Roman authorities. By this they achieved the death sentence of Christ. They betrayed Him out of envy. Of course, the Jewish leaders were responsible for the death of Jesus, since they had ulterior motives for wanting Him to die.

Riding a donkey

The Passion of Christ begins its countdown with the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem. Nowadays, believers celebrate a holiday on Sunday exactly a week before Easter, which in Russia is better known as Palm Sunday.

The Gospel describes how Jesus rode into Jerusalem riding a donkey, and the people met him, covering the road with clothes and palm branches (which is why this day is also called Palm Sunday).

Arriving at the Jerusalem Temple, Christ began to overturn the tables of the money changers and livestock sellers, causing discontent among the servants, but they did not dare to contradict him, fearing the people’s anger. After this, Christ performed several famous miracles, healing the lame and the blind, and then left Jerusalem, spending the next night in Bethany.

In Christian ideology, this holiday symbolizes two important points at once: it serves as a prototype of the entry of the Son of Man into Paradise and is considered the recognition of Jesus as the Messiah. The Jews, who at that time were under Roman occupation, were also expecting the Messiah. They were waiting for a national liberator from foreign invaders.

They greeted Jesus so solemnly because they already knew about his many miracles. The most impressive thing was the resurrection of Lazarus. Entering the city, Jesus deliberately chooses a donkey for himself rather than a horse, because in the East the donkey is considered a symbol of peace, and the horse is a symbol of war.

Did the Jewish people kill Jesus?

Jesus was followed by a large number of people who wanted to be healed and listened to His preaching. Some of them only wanted to see miracles without following his strict teachings.

After Jesus was captured by the Roman authorities, many Jews watched. At first Pilate wanted to free Jesus, but a crowd of Jews asked Barabbas to kill Him.

People shouted from all sides: “Crucify Him!” Then Pilate washed his hands, saying that they were guilty of the death of Christ, his blood would be on them and their children! But not all Jews longed for the death of Christ. Some of them looked upon Him as the Messiah or a great Prophet. But overall the Jewish people rejected their Savior.

So Peter blamed the crowd of Jews at Pentecost. He said that it was they who put Christ to death. Peter later said that they denied Jesus in the presence of Pilate when he wanted to have mercy on Him.

Therefore, even those Jews who were not present at the crucifixion are considered to be responsible for the death of Jesus.

Azarova Galina Gordeevna, leading healthy lifestyle instructor, teacher at the school named after Marshal V.I. Chuikova.

In 1977, I underwent a major operation, losing a very noticeable part of my body. But I didn’t consider myself disabled, but thought: why did this happen to me? And what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again? I started reading books on medicine, but they talked about diseases and their treatment in hospitals. Then I started looking for books about disease prevention, a healthy lifestyle, various exercises, met very interesting people, went to different sections, groups, and finally came to the “Unity” Center for Psychophysical Improvement. In the very first month of classes, I realized where I ended up - that is, exactly where I wanted to go - and in parallel with attending classes, I organized a health group at my school. The school director supported me; many teachers attended classes. Then the parents of our students began to come. My goal was not only to strengthen my own health, but also the health of the people around me, children and adolescents, the nation as a whole, and the psychosphere of the Earth. And together with the members of Unity, I am developing plans and ways to achieve this great goal. Wish us success! And join us!

At the camp I discovered that I could draw, I could walk without glasses (the fear that I couldn’t live without them disappeared), and I came to understand the importance of muscle relaxation. I learned a lot of things I needed: new exercises for mobility of muscles, joints and spine, the ability to relax. I learned to look relaxed, I felt that my eyes didn’t strain and I could see more clearly. I really liked palming, everything is clearly visible after it. As a result, the decision came to take off my glasses as often as possible and try to watch without glasses. At the beginning of the camp I saw the 1st line of the table, at the end - the 3rd.

Was Jesus killed by Pilate?

Pilate was appointed ruler of Judea by Rome. He was responsible for the order of the territory entrusted to him. The imposition of the death penalty at that time could only be possible with the approval of Rome. But often the Jews of Judea took upon themselves the function of stoning those who broke the law. It is written about Pilate in the Gospels that he was a weak, cruel and inept ruler. Under his rule, innocent people were often executed. Although he was willing to let Jesus go, he was afraid that the Jews would accuse him of being irresponsible to Caesar. And yet he, too, is responsible for the death of Jesus. Pilate handed the innocent Jesus over to his soldiers to be crucified.

Are we all to blame for Jesus' death?

To some extent, all of humanity, and each of us in particular, is responsible for the death of Christ. But how can one believe this, since we did not live 2000 years ago and did not participate in the betrayal of Jesus, did not throw stones at him and did not stand in the indignant crowd? But Jesus died for our sins according to the Scriptures. He suffered death in the body for us, for you and me. Therefore, there is no need to blame either Judas, or the Roman soldiers, or the Jews, or Pilate individually for His death. All of us, all of humanity, are responsible for the death of Jesus. Look at your sins and admit your guilt for them.

Epistle of Peter

The Apostle Peter also speaks about the death of Jesus Christ in his letter. He provides evidence that Christ also suffered for the sins of people, being a righteous man, in order to bring unrighteous people to God.

Have a good conscience, so that those for whom you are slandered as evildoers may be put to shame by those who reproach your good life in Christ.

For, if the will of God pleases, it is better to suffer for good deeds than for evil ones;

because Christ, in order to lead us to God, once suffered for our sins, the righteous for the unjust, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit,

to whom He and the spirits in prison, having descended, preached
