History of the Dead Sea
There is nothing mysterious about the Dead Sea; scientists have long found answers to all questions. This place was formed approximately 3 million years ago. Under the influence of natural forces, a fault formed in the lithospheric plates, in which water began to accumulate over time.
Due to the natural phenomenon that occurred, the land level in this place was 430 meters below the level of the world ocean. The filling was periodic and with each drying of the reservoir, salts and minerals remained at the bottom, which increased mineralization in the future. Soon the water was able to linger in this place, but had a concentration unsuitable for the life of any living organisms. Nowadays only certain types of bacteria can be found in the waters of the Dead Sea.
The sea level is constantly decreasing at a rate of 1 meter per year. This circumstance threatens the existence of the health resort. The authorities of the states on whose territory this sea is located are constantly examining its condition and trying to take measures to maintain the level. The Dead Sea includes two pools, which scientists are trying to unite. But the main difficulty lies in their great distance from each other and the different water levels in them.
Dead Sea: expectation and reality
Tatyana Afanasyeva
Most people associate the Dead Sea with Israel; many do not even suspect that half of it is in Jordan, and medical tourism is also developed there, it has its own beaches and its own wellness programs. We went there purely out of curiosity and just for one day, traveling from Aqaba. But first things first…
— Rent a car in Jordan? It's scary. But I so wanted to go to the Dead Sea, so that with the breeze - through the desert, catching the local radio wave, stopping where I wanted, so that Jordanian villages, vegetable gardens, camels, oases rush past... And desire won.
There are representative offices of international rental companies in Aqaba - Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, so you can safely rent a car. We used Dollar - their office is to the right of the entrance to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Aqaba. The deposit is $350 - it is blocked on the card and returned immediately upon delivery of the car. Rental from $35 per day, in our case - Mitsubishi Lancer, automatic. Gasoline - 70 piastres per liter (80 rubles, 90th).
By the way, the entire area next to the DoubleTree hotel is rental offices. Everything is very civilized and organized.
From Aqaba to the Dead Sea we drove along road No. 65, it is called the “Dead Sea Highway”. 270 km of serene beauty. I wholeheartedly recommend - no serpentines, very few cars, cosmic landscapes and... camels walking among them. Can you find the couple in this photo?
It was unusual to see camels in “free swimming” - walking among the sands, chewing rare bushes and trees, without any blankets, bridles or hucksters trying to get rich at their expense.
We were stopped a couple of times at checkpoints to check our documents and once again say: Welcome to Jordan! By the way, the mountains in the frame are already Israel.
Gas stations are like gas stations, nothing surprised, well, if only in Arabic script.
Jordanian roads are in fairly good condition.
There weren’t that many populated areas, but there was enough color.
There is a “body fashion” in Jordan. All the sides of the trucks are like works of art.
Roadside coffee shops, vegetable stands on the side of the road... Everything is as it should be
We also drove past refugee camps.
The landscapes were much more pleasing than the everyday life.
Dead Sea: expectation & reality. Expectation. I painted the following picture for myself: shallow, muddy, very calm, with flat banks and fat men floundering on the surface, trying to hide their bodies under the water, but in vain. No vegetation, no fish, nothing. Reality. Nobody really lives in water. But at the same time the sea creates the impression of being alive! It has an amazing color, sound, and it licks the base of the rocks with blue tongues, leaving the most amazingly beautiful salt deposits and patterns. The Dead Sea turned out to be warmer than the Red Sea. Not surprisingly, the weather is always good here - 330 sunny days a year, and 55 thermal springs flow into it. Regarding the benefits: the water and mud from the bottom contain a lot of valuable elements - from bromine and chlorine to rare metals. People suffering from various diseases of the skin, joints and nervous system come here. They say it helps. All that was left was to find a beach to swim! And catch zen.
Swimming in the Dead Sea is not so simple - the shore is rocky and steep, everything that seems to be a beach is not actually one. At the border with the water there is a white layered salt crust, the depth is unknown, and the comfort of entry is also unknown. However, there are a few places where anything is possible.
Point de vue. Free, but wild. Don't forget special slippers for walking on the rough bottom, swimming goggles for eye safety, and a couple of cans of plain water to wash off the salt. And there will be a lot of it!
Porto Dead See. This is the name of the hotel where locals set up an unofficial one next to the official beach. Price: $10-15 per family. There are no conditions, but they will definitely provide you with water to wash yourself.
Amman Tourist Beach. Entrance 20 dinars per person. Expensive, but all the conditions. Swimming pools, changing rooms, showers, toilets, beach umbrellas, sandy beach... Swimming is very comfortable. For 3 dinars you can also buy a bucket of healing mud.
We didn’t have time to rush around the coast, so we chose Amman Tourist Beach to be sure to have a blast.
There are pebble beaches, there are sandy ones, and there are very salty ones :)))
The water is +25, dense, oily and keeps you on the surface - you feel like you are floating on an inflatable chair. But you can’t get carried away with the sea, no more than 20 minutes at a time. After 2-3 hours you can repeat. And, of course, don’t splash, don’t dive, don’t scratch your skin, don’t lose your composure. :)) Self-control is difficult! Especially when trying to swim on your stomach.
And finally, some interesting facts about the Dead Sea:
- The surface of the sea is located more than 400 m below the level of the world's oceans, therefore it is considered the lowest point on the planet.
- The depth of the sea is 377 m, width is 18 km (at its widest point).
- One of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth! Salinity – 33.7%. But Lake Assal in Djibouti, Kara-Bogaz-Gol in Turkmenistan and some lakes in Antarctica are ahead of it in their hypersalinity.
- The Jordan River is the only major source of water flowing into the Dead Sea.
- A myriad of celebrities shopped there, including the Jewish king Herod the Great and the beautiful Egyptian queen Cleopatra. And the Bible says that it was here that King David’s refuge was located.
- The water, mud and air of the “Holy Lake” (as it is also called) rejuvenate the entire body.
- The air at the Dead Sea contains additional oxygen and bromine, which creates a pleasant, relaxing effect.
- There is an asphalt deposit at the bottom of the sea. In ancient times, bitumen liquid rising to the surface was used in medicine and industry. Therefore, another name for it is the Asphalt Sea.
- There are waves on the Jordanian side But with the Israeli one, no. But this is not certain :))) I need to go check it out.
Our journey through Jordan, the previous three parts: Part 1. Aqaba is a resort on the Red Sea. Part 2. Ancient Petra. One of the new wonders of the world. Part 3. Wadi Rum desert - Jordanian Mars.

Is this how you imagined the Dead Sea?
Precautions when swimming
The concentration of salts and minerals in the Dead Sea is so high that it exceeds the average levels of the world's oceans by 8 times. Therefore, when visiting this place, you must adhere to certain rules, observing which it is impossible to harm the body. You should enter the water gradually, avoiding sudden movements, smoothly plunging to great depths. With each step, the dense water of the sea will push the body with greater force, causing you to experience an unusual feeling of lightness. It is recommended to enter the water with your back to avoid getting burns from the high concentration of salts.
The Dead Sea is fundamentally different from other seas, so you should not attempt active splashing, diving or scuba diving. All this can lead to water getting into the eyes, which will cause discomfort and, in the worst case, a burn. If you experience an unpleasant burning sensation, you need to rinse the area with clean fresh water. You should also observe the regime of staying in water; salt water with constant contact with the human body can lead to dehydration of the body. At the bottom of the sea there are a large number of salt crystals that have sharp edges, so it is necessary to have rubber shoes, since even a small scratch from salt water will constantly remind you of itself.
Despite the prohibitions, the Dead Sea is considered healing, and many tourists call it a “healing pearl.” A large amount of minerals, bromine vapor in the air and healing mud at the bottom lead to amazing healing effects. The sun's rays, breaking through dense and saturated air masses, are deprived of harmful ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, being under the sun has a healing effect on the condition of the skin. All these facts make the Dead Sea a unique place on planet Earth, the existence of which is in danger without active action by the scientific community.

Who killed the Dead Sea or why don't the Jews swim in it?
The Dead Sea is a wonderful place where you can not only have a great rest, but also improve your health. People from all over the world come here to look at this unique body of water and enjoy its beauty. In addition, this sea has unusual properties that help people cope with many diseases.
Salt, minerals, clean water and oxygen are the main advantages of a holiday at the Dead Sea. The most beautiful thing is that the water of this sea is so clean and transparent that you can see all the smallest details of the relief down to the very bottom. Such beauty cannot be seen anywhere else. And besides, the landscapes that complement the overall picture of the atmosphere are no less beautiful.
Where is the dead sea
The sea does not occupy a very significant part of the land, but extends across the territory of three countries - Jordan, Palestine and Israel.
Scientists are still arguing about what is the correct name for this body of water? Sea or lake? Many are accustomed to calling it the sea. The lake is about 70 kilometers long and about eighteen kilometers wide.
Climate of the Dead Sea coast
It is worth noting that the temperature on the sea coast stays around 24 degrees almost all the time. Therefore, you can enjoy such a vacation at any time of the year.
What to do at this resort?
Large-scale complexes have been created here for vacationers and tourists, consisting of good hotels, hospitals and spas. Probably, many people know or have heard that medicine in Israel is one of the best, which is why many therapeutic and health-improving procedures are carried out here. Many tourists are simply wildly delighted with the local spa. The effect, as they say, is immediate. Well, on the body))). In general, the Dead Sea Coast is not an iconic beach resort. But despite this, there are a great many tourists and vacationers here.
The highlight of the Dead Sea
The most interesting thing is that swimming in such a sea is almost impossible.
This is due to the fact that there is a huge amount of salt. Its concentration and density are so great that you can simply lie on the water without making any movements. In order to swim even a little, you need to make every effort, and turn out and, as it were, spin around yourself. From the outside, these body movements seem strange and funny. But this also has its advantages. Can you imagine what a wonderful charger this is? Almost titanic efforts))). By the way, even those who can’t swim can have a great time here. Drowning in the Dead Sea is practically impossible, unless someone specifically drowns you. Personally, I really enjoyed lying on the surface of the water and sunbathing, with a magazine in my hands. Several pleasures at the same time - such a pastime is possible only here.
As soon as you enter the sea, you can feel how all the little scratches on your body react to the salt water. The skin begins to tingle and pinch. That is why, if the integrity of the skin is compromised, then such bathing is best avoided. Otherwise you will be able to fully experience the meaning of Vysotsky’s song “Don’t pour salt on my wound, it still hurts.”
You need to be especially careful with your eyes. Try to bathe so that water does not get on the mucous membrane. The eyes immediately begin to burn very strongly, tears run in a stream. Not a pleasant feeling, let me tell you. I was not lucky. I was lying on the water, not touching anyone, but there was a couple nearby with a child of about 8 years old. So this young hooligan took it and splashed some water on my face. Played a prank. I simply experienced a range of indescribable sensations. Surprise, sharp pain in the eyes, watery eyes and wild anger at all the ill-mannered children in the world!
By the way, many scientists argue that such a miracle of nature as the Dead Sea may soon simply disappear from the face of the Earth. Therefore, it is definitely worth visiting right now, so as not to miss the opportunity to see the unique sea and appreciate the charm of the surrounding nature with your own eyes.

Kalia Beach
This is the oldest beach on the north coast. It boasts its beauty, cleanliness and stunning sea views. Bianchini beach.
Very well maintained, clean, cozy, with green lawns and grassy islands. In addition, a big advantage is that there is a restaurant on site. Tourists are provided with tents and sleeping bags for an overnight stay near the sea. Bianchini has swimming pools and a treatment center, as well as a wonderful concert hall.
On the coast there are also equally popular and luxurious beaches called Neve Midbar Beach, Eitnot Tsukim, Minaral and others. All of them are designed for a comfortable and great pastime. Equipped with all the necessary attributes of a beach holiday. Entrance to all beaches is paid. For adults it is one price, and for children a little less.
Sights of the Dead Sea coast
Judean Desert.
Judean Desert
It stretches from Jerusalem itself all the way to the coast of the Dead Sea. This desert is perhaps one of the most mysterious on the planet. Many legends are associated with her name. By the way, people still live in some places in its vastness. It is also considered a desert only during periods of drought and is incredibly transformed during the rainy season. Not a desert, but an oasis.
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve.
Ein Gedi Nature Reserve
An incredible place, a paradise island in the middle of the desert. Gardens are blooming here. Locals grow melons and watermelons. In the center of the reserve there is a famous spring with unusually tasty water. There is also a fairly famous resort with natural hydrogen sulfide baths.
Stalactite caves.

This is where the real paradise for speleologists lies. Not only is it very beautiful here, but you can also see a plant with the proud name Hair of Shulamith. This fern is named after the most beloved wife of King Solomon.
Tree of Paradise.
On its branches you can see those same legendary Eve's apples. If possible, pick a fruit from this tree and take a bite. As soon as the skin of the apple bursts, the fruit itself turns to dust.
Factory-shop of Dead Sea cosmetics.
cosmetics factory
The famous AHAVA cosmetics are produced and sold here. The choice of funds is huge. You can find whatever your heart desires. Starting from cosmetics to medicinal products.
Zero altitude level.
Mount Sodom.
Mount Sodom
It is unusual in that it consists entirely of salt deposits. At first glance, it is unremarkable. A mountain is like a mountain. But if you just take a closer look, you can see many sculptures that nature itself formed. Personally, I advise everyone to visit this resort. It's really great here. And how can you not like such a vacation? You can not only relax, but also bring your health back to normal. Hotels, restaurants, complexes for children, cleanliness and comfort - everything is here, and in excellent condition. Of course, special attention should be paid to SPA procedures; they will definitely not leave anyone indifferent.
Hotels or where to stay
There are no problems with housing here, and in principle, like at any other resort. About 20 hotels and hotel complexes will be at your service. Prices and service are not much different, with the exception of very cheap options, where there may not even be a smell of service. I will give you some of the most popular hotels on the coast.
David Dead Sea Resort & Spa
David Dead Sea Resort & Spa.
Ideal location, proximity to the sea and amazing spa treatments - that's what this hotel is all about. In addition to the above, there is a swimming pool, a restaurant, and a concert hall. The staff is very cheerful and friendly. The rooms are large with huge windows and excellent sea views. Several managers speak Russian well.
Lot Spa Hotel
Lot Spa Hotel.
The hotel is located in the middle of the coast. Among other hotels. This one is notable for having its own access to the sea. Food is a buffet, which is very convenient when following a diet. The staff is up to par. The rooms are cleaned daily and the range of cosmetics in the showers is replenished.
The Masada Hostel
The Masada Hostel.
The main advantage is that it is inexpensive. Good location - at the foot of the mountain we also add a plus sign. Rooms for several people, acceptable cleanliness. Not very cozy, noisy and crowded. But here it’s up to you to decide what to choose. The budget option is perfect for a few days. And significant savings in money that can be spent on excursions, of which there are many.
There are certain problems with communication in Israel. But it is worth noting that in some hotels the staff speaks Russian, and audio translators have not been canceled. So, there is no need to learn Hebrew to visit the famous lake.
Contraindications for holidays at the Dead Sea
There are some diseases and abnormalities in the body with which you should not visit such resorts. Such diseases include malignant tumors, heart pathologies, diabetes, kidney dysfunction, bleeding, infectious diseases, epileptic attacks and other severe diseases.
People who suffer from such diseases are not recommended to visit such resorts, swim in salty ponds, or be treated with mud.
Why was the sea called dead?
This is because no living creature can survive in such salty water. There is nothing there except a few species of bacteria that have adapted to such an environment. It is also impossible to cross this lake, even by boat. The fact is that the lake simply pushes all objects that fall into the water to the surface. There were brave souls who tried to prove to the world that nothing is impossible. But in the end it all ended in tears. Boats capsized, and people died not from drowning, but from poisoning. The concentration of salt is so high that the consistency of the water resembles jelly.
Why don't Jews swim in the Dead Sea?
There is a legend that Sodom and Gomorrah used to be on the site of this lake. The inhabitants of these cities were such sinners that the Lord sent down punishment on them in the form of sulfur-salt rain. All the wicked died. Only one righteous man named Lot survived, although he was left alone, because his wife turned into a pillar of salt. Apparently she also made a lot of mistakes. The Jews believe that at the bottom of the Dead Sea there are corpses of those wicked people and to swim in this water means to join in their sins. This is one of the versions, since Jewish disputes about this sea-lake still do not subside.
Conclusion
I enjoyed my holiday on the Dead Sea coast. Plus, I brought with me a lot of natural cosmetics. And my skin became so great after local spa treatments. As a spa destination, the Dead Sea cannot be compared with any Moscow spa.

It's all in the composition
Everything has to do with the composition. The concentration of salt in the water here exceeds all imaginable standards - thirty percent. There are no such indicators anywhere else. If we compare it with the Mediterranean Sea, for example, it contains only three percent salt. The advantage is that it is almost impossible to drown in such water. But there is also a problem. For the human body, too much concentration of minerals and salt are real poison.
So what now? Don't go into the pond at all? No, of course, but it is vital to adhere to a number of rules.
Can pregnant women swim in the Dead Sea?
Of course, a lot depends on the condition of the expectant mother and the course of her pregnancy. In any case, when planning your vacation to the Dead Sea, you should first consult a doctor. If everything is fine with you and the doctor approves of such a vacation, then, of course, the salty air on the beaches will only benefit you. An additional bonus will be the sun, which does not burn the body.
But expectant mothers should not go to the sea in July or June. This period is the hottest, so it is better to reschedule your trip to another month.
It is worth noting that the Dead Sea has a beneficial effect on the health of a pregnant woman. First of all, it calms, relieves stress, strengthens the body, saturating it with useful microelements. There are also contraindications during pregnancy. A young mother should not swim in the sea or lie on it. It is only allowed to wet the skin with sea water, and you can also simply wet the legs.
Harmful effects
- Very high salinity means that in case of existing open wounds or ulcers, immersion in water will cause unpleasant, even painful sensations.
- Staying in water for more than 20 minutes at a time causes the risk of dehydration , and the threat of electrolyte imbalance increases, that is, too high or too low the content of electrolytes (salts) in the body.
- Swimming in the Dead Sea is contraindicated for people who have: infectious diseases; renal failure; epilepsy; cirrhosis and other liver diseases; malignant tumors; severe diabetes; alcoholism or drug addiction; Allergic reactions in acute forms; previous myocardial infarction or stroke.
- In summer, the air temperature often exceeds 40⁰ Celsius, so those who cannot tolerate heat should not consider this region for recreation and treatment.
- When the mucous membranes come into contact with water, they immediately begin to corrode, which is very dangerous for health, so diving with your head is prohibited here.
However, in order to prevent the negative consequences of visiting a reservoir, you need to follow simple rules.
Why can't you swim when you're sick? What to remember when going to the bathroom.
However, there is an opinion that it is better to avoid water procedures during illness, or even abandon them altogether. And there is some truth in this - although they seem necessary, they can cause even greater harm. It's all about the difference in temperature in the bathroom and living room, and temperature changes during illness are completely unacceptable. In addition, even a tiny draft can harm a steamed body, and this will only worsen the disease.
But this does not mean that you should give up washing altogether. Washing is not harmful at all, and is even beneficial. Water has a beneficial effect, soothes, washes away dirt and sweat, and baths with herbs and essential oils are not only pleasant, but also help restore and heal the body.
How to take a bath when sick
- Baths will definitely have to be avoided if the patient has a high temperature. Hot water will make it rise even higher. If you cannot do without washing, it is better to take a quick warm shower and wipe yourself dry before leaving the bathroom. It is impossible to dry your hair instantly, so it is better to postpone washing it.
- Bath time should be reduced to a minimum. High humidity in the bathroom can worsen a runny nose and cough. Opening the door to reduce it is also not recommended - there is a high risk of creating drafts, which should be avoided in the first place if you have a cold.
- To reduce temperature differences, you can install a heater in the living room. And if it’s cool there, it should work constantly. Don’t forget about warm clothes, because there is nothing worse than being cold when you are sick.
- It is best to take a bath before bed, and immediately after it go to bed. Rub your feet with warming ointment, put on warm, preferably woolen, socks, cover yourself with a blanket and try to fall asleep. Not everyone succeeds in this immediately after a bath, but the effect of such sleep will be truly healing.
Contrary to popular belief, washing while sick is not at all prohibited. The main thing is to remember the basic rules, and with the right approach, water procedures will not only bring benefits, but will also most likely improve your mood, which is one of the essential factors for a speedy recovery.
What to see and do at the Dead Sea?
It is not necessary to spend the whole day on the coast. Tourists who have visited these places leave excellent reviews about excursions and entertainment.
The Judean Desert begins off the shores of this reservoir. During the dry months it seems lifeless, but after a period of rain it turns into a beautiful oasis of flowers. Exciting camel and jeep safaris are organized here.
You can take a tour to the place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ. The shrine is located on the border territory. From the Israeli side, you can approach it and swim in the river only on Epiphany. From the Jordan side, the passage to the holy place is always open.
It is impossible to leave the resort without wonderful cosmetics made from seafood. You can buy it in the city of Ein Bokek. The specialty store offers the entire range of the famous AHAVA brand.
The resorts organize excursion trips to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and the main attractions of Israel.
Treatment at the Dead Sea resorts in Israel
Many people go to the Dead Sea primarily not for relaxation, but for recovery. So, what diseases does the Dead Sea cure:
- respiratory diseases (asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis);
- various neurological ailments (insomnia, vegetative-vascular dystonia, etc.);
- gynecological and andrological (prostatitis, infertility, impotence);
- muscle diseases (myositis, collagenosis, etc.);
- skin (eczema, acne, psoriasis, etc.).
Treatment with mud at sea is especially popular. After all, they have unique therapeutic properties that have no analogues in the whole world.
Did you know that... some psychologists claim that wallowing in healing mud has a very positive effect on a person’s consciousness. Because this therapy reminds you of the amazing months of life spent in the mother's womb.
Sea mud also has aseptic properties , which promote skin rejuvenation and have a positive effect on intracellular metabolic processes. In addition, mud procedures have a number of amazing properties:
- have a good effect on the condition of blood vessels;
- have a relaxing effect on muscle tone;
- they perfectly cleanse and stimulate the skin;
- have excellent therapeutic and cosmetic effects.
DEAD SEA: INDICATIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS
Dead Sea clinics specialize in the treatment of skin, gynecological diseases, diseases of the nervous system, musculoskeletal system, and general health. But there are contraindications, for example, asthma, mental illness, serious surgical interventions related to oncology, pregnancy, and age under two years.
Everything heals at the Dead Sea - air, sun, water, famous mud. It is best to breathe before 8 am, since due to differences in day and night temperatures, evaporation rises from the sea in the morning, saturating the air with oxygen.
People with skin diseases (psoriasis, neurodermatitis, vitiligo, acne, etc.) are helped not by water, but by the sun. The evaporation forms a kind of dome over the sea, which filters ultraviolet radiation.
“People who want to undergo treatment must be warned that under no circumstances should they jump into the water immediately after arrival, this risks exacerbation and the person simply will not be able to leave the room for 5-7 days. This will ruin both your vacation and treatment, but the Dead Sea resorts are among the most expensive in Israel,” the expert warned.
The salts and mud of the Dead Sea have a beneficial effect on the body, but there are many nuances. You can stay in the water for 10-15 to 20-25 minutes at a time, then you need to get out, wash off the “dead” water and rest. Then the body itself will tell you whether it needs to be repeated, the main thing is not to cause harm. Do not allow water to come into contact with mucous membranes or eyes. If this happens, rinse them immediately with fresh water and consult a doctor.
Anna Rodimina spoke about another feature of treatment at the Dead Sea: “If there are any diseases, then in the first 3-4 days an exacerbation will begin, the deterioration can last 9-10 days, but by the 14th day everything goes away. We even had clients who, after 13 days of rest, flew home, and then called from Domodedovo airport and reported that there had been a serious improvement.”
Dead Sea mud, according to Anna Rodimina, is very good for treating diseases of the musculoskeletal system and joints. You should not look at advertising brochures where, for example, a beautiful girl smears mud on her face. This is possible, but the dirt must be specially prepared and mixed with oils. Mud directly from the Dead Sea should be applied to the shoulder, elbow, knee joints; if applied to the face, neck, chest, or stomach, you can get a burn. But, in any case, the best recommendations to follow will be given by the doctor, especially since the initial consultation is usually included in the price of the tour.
