February 19: what not to do on Vukol Memorial Day

Who are the saints of the Christian Church? A saint is, first of all, an icon of Christian virtue, an example of piety, righteousness, faith and other qualities that every Christian should strive for. According to the teachings of the church, saints, after death, remain at the throne of God and pray before God for the salvation of all people now living on earth.

Over the ten centuries of the existence of the Russian Church, from the Baptism of Rus' until the year 2000, it glorified about 300 people as saints. As a result of the mass canonization of those martyred for professing the Christian faith in the Soviet years, more than a thousand more joined them. The days of the church calendar, which can be found in the monthly book, are dedicated to their memory. These days, Orthodox Christians remember the significance that these saints had for the church, as well as their state. In this material we will talk about some of them.

Vukol Memorial Day – history

Vukol was the bishop of the Smyrna church and lived in the 1st–2nd centuries. Little is known about his life. According to legend, he was ordained bishop of the city of Smyrna by the Apostle Paul himself. Some believe that Vukol studied with John the Theologian.

There is another belief that a tree grew on Vukol’s grave, which healed people who came to him from illnesses.

What you can and cannot do on February 19

In the morning they prayed for health, strong immunity, healing from existing diseases, as well as protection of their loved ones, pets and livestock.

It was forbidden to harm livestock. The cows were provided with food and warmth. They weren't yelled at or angry. They believed that an offended cow might stop giving milk.

It was not worth sharing your cow's milk with neighbors and other people, as this could supposedly also offend the animal.

No one was told about the birth of the calf so that it would grow up healthy.

Special care was also taken for cats. They could not be kicked out of the house. It was believed that a cat in the house could ward off trouble.

No money or things were lent to anyone. They themselves also did not borrow anything during the day.

It was forbidden to buy a wallet and count money. They completely refrained from any financial manipulations on such a day.

It was allowed to engage in almost any work. Hard work was encouraged and laziness was frowned upon.

The day was not suitable for water treatments, so trips to the bathhouse were postponed.

Pregnant women were required to rest all day and refuse any work.

Single people asked for a quick meeting with their soulmate. It was believed that this actually increased the chance of finding love in the near future.

They did not take the trash out of the house, for fear of “taking out” their luck along with it.

It was impossible to quarrel with loved ones. In addition, for the rest of the day they did not swear, did not shout at anyone, did not get angry or offended.

It was assumed that a positive dream should not be told to anyone so that it would come true as soon as possible. A bad dream was quickly forgotten, thereby reducing the chances of it happening.

Memorial Day of Grand Duke Vladimir (July 28)

On July 28 there are two holidays in the Orthodox calendar: the Day of the Baptism of Rus' and the day of remembrance of Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir, with whose name this historical event is associated. In 998, Vladimir the Great Svyatoslavovich adopted Christianity according to the Greek rite, and also made it the state religion of Kievan Rus. This was of great importance for the formation of the Old Russian state: Christianity strengthened state power and the territorial unity of the country, contributed to the development of culture and the spread of writing, not to mention the birth of the Russian Orthodox Church. However, the achievements of the Grand Duke do not end there: he pursued an active foreign policy, began minting coins, and initiated the writing of the Church Charter - one of the main sources of Russian church law.

The mark that Vladimir Svyatoslavovich left on the history of Rus' was so great that already in the first centuries after his death his life took on the form of an epic epic. He became the prototype of the epic namesake, Vladimir Krasno Solnyshko - one of the key figures of Kyiv folklore and the head of Russian heroes. In the second half of the 13th century, Grand Duke Vladimir was canonized as an Equal-to-the-Apostles saint by the Russian Orthodox Church, and from the 15th century his veneration acquired the features of a church-state celebration. Many Orthodox temples and churches were erected in his honor, monuments were erected throughout the country, and military orders and awards were established.

The memory of Grand Duke Vladimir Svyatoslavovich is celebrated annually on July 28 and October 23 according to the new style.

Features of worship

Last time we tried to answer common questions from our readers about the Creed. Today we continue to analyze what is happening at the liturgy.

After the confession of faith by everyone present in the church, the deacon calls everyone to begin performing anaphora, that is, offering gifts - reverently, with fear and attention.

The choir responds on behalf of everyone that our sacrifice is not the killing of sacrificial animals, as it was before the incarnation of the Son of God, but a sacrifice of peace and praise: “Mercy, peace, sacrifice of praise.”

The priest behind the closed gate blesses:

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit will be with you all!”

While the choir reads “It is worthy and just to worship the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, consubstantial and indivisible,” the priest reads a prayer before the offering. Let's give it translated into Russian:

“It is worthy and just to glorify You, to bless You, to praise You, to thank You, to worship You in every place of Your dominion, for You are God ineffable, unknowable, invisible, incomprehensible, eternally existing, You and Your only Son, and Your Holy Spirit. You brought us from non-existence into being, and raised up those who had fallen away again, and relentlessly did everything until you raised us to heaven and gave us Your future Kingdom. For all this we thank You, and Your only Son and Your Holy Spirit, for everything that we know and what we do not know, the obvious and unknown blessings that have been done for us. We thank You also for this common service, which You have deigned to accept from our hands, although thousands of Archangels and tens of thousands of Angels stand before You, Cherubim and Seraphim, six-winged, many-eyed, soaring, winged, singing a song of victory, calling, shouting and saying:

At this time, the choir sings so that everyone in the temple can hear:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts! Heaven and earth are full of Your glory! Rescue from heaven! Blessed is He who walks in the name of the Lord! Rescue from heaven!

Two Angels

However, a person’s patron saint should not be confused with his Guardian Angel, who is assigned to a person on the day of his spiritual birth - Baptism, for protection from life’s troubles, care, warning against sins and posthumous accompaniment.

As Saint Theodore of Edessa wrote: “The Lord gives each of us two Angels, one of which - the Guardian Angel - protects us from all evil, from various misfortunes and helps us do good, and the other Angel is the holy saint of God, whose name we bear , intercedes for us before God, prays to God for us. His prayers, as more worthy and pleasing to God, are more likely to be accepted than our sinners.”
