Ceremony of Daily Vespers
Every day Vespers is celebrated, according to chapter 9 of the Typikon, next. way.
After the prayer of the 9th hour: “Sovereign Lord...” there is no release.
At the end of the prayer of the 9th hour, the priest, having put on a phelonion and opening the curtain (Typikon, chapters 7 and 9), comes out of the altar to the north. door, stands in front of the royal doors and proclaims: “Blessed is our God...”.
Reader: “Amen,” “Come, let us worship...” (three times), after which he reads 103 ps. - initial: “Bless the Lord, my soul.”
In cases where the 9th hour is not celebrated , Vespers begins as follows:
The priest exclaims: “Blessed is our God...”.
The reader answers: “Amen” and reads the usual beginning, i.e. “To the King of Heaven...”, Trisagion after “Our Father...”, “Lord, have mercy” (12 times), “Glory even now,” “Come let us worship...” (three times), and then 103 ps.
During reading 103 ps. The priest, standing on the salt in front of the royal doors with his head uncovered, secretly reads the 7 prayers of light, which are in the Service Book at the very beginning of the “Rite of Vespers.” lamp prayers because at this time, during the evening service, lamps are lit in the temple.
The reader, having finished reading 103 ps., says “Glory. And now,” with threefold “Alleluia.”
After this, the priest, standing in the same place, on the salt, says great. Litany : “Let us pray to the Lord in peace.”
If a deacon serves with a priest, then at the end of 103 ps. he comes from the north. doors to the pulpit, bows to the priest and pronounces the great litany, and the priest goes to the altar.
At the end of the litany, the deacon also enters the altar (if the litany is pronounced by a priest, then he leaves for the altar only after the exclamation “As befits...”).
After the exclamation, an ordinary kathisma . Kathisma begins with the reading of a psalm, and not with the singing of “Lord, have mercy” (three times) with “Glory”. After reading the kathisma, a small litany is pronounced. On Sunday evenings and on holidays, kathisma should not be read at Vespers.
Next, the choir sings “Lord, I have cried” with stichera according to the Rule.
“Lord, I cried” on the days of the forefeast and postfeast, as well as to the sixfold saint and on Saturday, it is sung to the voice indicated in the Menaion.
If the saint does not have a sign, his service does not coincide with a Saturday service or some holiday, then “Lord, I have cried” is sung in the voice of the current week, Octoechos, and the first 3 stichera will be taken from Octoechos, and the rest from the Menaion.
The total number of stichera according to the Charter is 6, not counting the stichera on “Glory” and “And now.”
This is followed by “Glory, and now,” then the Theotokos is sung, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays the Theotokos are sung, which are found alongside in the Menaion.
From Friday to Saturday on “And Now” the dogmatist of the voice of the expiring week is sung.
On the days of pre-feast and post-feast, the Theotokos is replaced by the stichera of the holiday from the Menaion.
Sometimes a saint has a stichera for “Glory.” In this case, the Theotokos is taken on “And Now” from the appendix of the Menaion according to the voice of “Glory”.
While singing the stichera “Lord, I have cried,” the deacon, and if there is no deacon, then the priest, censes (Typikon, 2, 9, 22 chapters) first around the altar, then the high place and the entire altar. Coming out of the north. door to the salt, the deacon censes St. the gates, the icons of the right and left sides of the iconostasis, then the right and left choirs, those praying and the entire temple.
After censing the entire temple, the deacon again rises to the solea and censes the local icons of the Savior and the Mother of God in front of the royal doors, and then enters the altar through the southern doors. At the altar, he censes before the priest’s altar and this ends the censing (Typikon, chapter 22).
After the stichera on “Lord, I have cried,” the choir sings “Quiet Light” (according to the Rules, entry is not allowed at all-day vespers).
If a priest serves without a deacon, then he says: “Let us attend,” “Let us attend to Wisdom,” and the prokeimenon of the day (see the Service Book, Book of Hours, and the Followed Psalter, where for each day of the week there is a special prokeimenon).
The choir sings the prokeimenon.
After the prokeme the reader: “Grant, Lord...”.
Then the priest (or deacon) says requests. Litany : “Let us fulfill our evening prayer to the Lord.”
If the service is performed by a priest with a deacon, then the exclamations after “Silent Light”, “Let us hear” and the prokeimenon are pronounced by the deacon in the altar on the High Place (at the altar).
He asks to pronounce it. Litany, like all other litanies, the deacon goes out to the sole.
After the litanies comes the exclamation of the priest: “As God is good and a lover of mankind...”.
Chorus: "Amen."
Priest: “Peace to all.”
Chorus: “And to Your Spirit.”
Deacon: “Let us bow our heads to the Lord.”
Choir: “To you, Lord” (drawn out).
The priest secretly reads the prayer of adoration . After this prayer, he proclaims: “Be the power of Your kingdom...”.
Then stichera are sung in stichera .
During the pre-Feast and post-Feast days, the stichera on the stichera are taken from the Menaion; on other days, when the service is not festive, but daily, these stichera are taken from the Octoechos, where they are given for every day.
On Saturday, from the Octoechos the stichera for the martyrs are taken, one verse and 2 stichera for “Lord, I cried” the martyr’s “Glory” to the saint, then the Theotokos stichera for “Glory” from the 2nd appendix of the Menaion are taken according to the voice, and the Theotokos “stichera for the verse” falls.
After the verse stichera, “Now you let go...” and the Trisagion after “Our Father...” are read.
Then the priest utters the exclamation: “For Thine is the Kingdom...”.
The choir sings the troparion .
On ordinary days, the troparion to the saint is performed, and on “Glory, and now” - the Theotokos from the lesser, i.e. from the 4th appendix according to the voice of the troparion.
During the period of forefeast and postfeast, first the troparion is sung to an ordinary saint, and on “Glory, and now” the troparion of the holiday is sung. If the memory of 2 saints is celebrated on the same day and each has its own troparion, then first the troparion of the 1st saint is sung, then “Glory” is the troparion of the 2nd saint, and on “And Now” the Theotokos from the lesser is sung, i.e. from the 4th appendix according to the voice of the last troparion.
On Saturday there is a troparion to the saint, and on “Glory, and now” - the Resurrection of the Theotokos according to the voice of the expiring week.
After singing the troparia, the deacon pronounces a special litany , beginning with the petition: “Have mercy on us, O God...” (this litany is in the Missal).
At the cry: “For he is merciful...” the deacon exclaims: “Wisdom.”
Choir: “Bless.”
Priest: “Blessed are you...”
Chorus: “Confirm, O God...”
Priest: “Most Holy Theotokos, save us.”
Chorus: “The most honest...”
Priest: “Glory to Thee, Christ God...”.
Chorus: “Glory, even now,” “Lord, have mercy” (three times). "Bless."
The priest with the northern doors, with the royal doors closed, goes out to the pulpit and, turning his face to the people, pronounces the dismissal .
Vacations for each day are indicated in the Service Book, after the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.
Moreover, if the service is performed on Sunday evening before Monday, then the dismissal at the end of the daily vespers will be pronounced by the priest as follows: “Christ our True God, through the prayers of His Most Pure Mother, the Intercession of the honest Heavenly forces of the disembodied: the glorious saints and all-praised apostle: (and the saints of the temple and the day) of the righteous holy Godfather Joachim and Anna and all the saints, will have mercy and save us, for he is good and a lover of mankind.”
After the dismissal, many years are sung: “Great Lord...”.
If, however, Matins is celebrated together with Vespers, as is customary in many churches, then dismissal is not said after Vespers. When the choir sings: “Confirm, O God...”, the priest utters the exclamation: “Glory to the Saints...” and then Matins begins.
After the dismissal, if one Vespers is served, the curtain is drawn, but if Vespers and Matins are served, then the curtain is not closed.
