Prayer and its meaning in Orthodoxy
The Orthodox tradition endows prayer with an important virtue - dispassion. Re-read the Gospel, which contains the important thought of the Son of God. This idea comes down to the removal of everything vain to the periphery of human consciousness.
While reading prayers, the following are expelled from the mind:
Emotional outbursts interfere with awareness and a clear understanding of the role of the temple in our lives. A similar mistake was already made by the Corinthian Christians, who tried to pour out their feelings in several languages and engage in prophecy. The Apostle Paul called these people to prudence. The saint recommended reading prayer texts wisely, controlling your actions.
The importance of prayers in Orthodoxy is very great. Praises to the Lord are offered morning and evening, together and individually. When we sing together with the church choir or offer speeches of gratitude to the Father and the Son, we cleanse our inner beings and prepare to endure any trials with fortitude. Have you noticed that the deacon reads the holy texts measuredly? Such an activity does not tolerate fuss, excessive enthusiasm or shedding of tears. The Lord gave you intelligence, use it.
Joint prayers in the temple
In churches, communal prayer is given special importance. The Church is not a gathering of lonely believers, it is a single organism acting in a common spiritual impulse. Joint prayer is an instrument of unity with God, which is invisibly present in any church.
Remember that there are church sacraments that only a clergyman can perform. Such sacraments are not limited to the reading of prayers.
Common prayer is most relevant during great services. Believers worship not only Jesus Christ, but also the Mother of God, as well as famous saints who made a significant contribution to the development of Christianity. If one of the parishioners is distracted from the service, the rest continue to pray. And this is where the power of collective hymns to the Mother of God and other saints lies.
Here are the main points in church services that are worth paying attention to:
- Praises to the Holy Spirit are offered by the priest and deacon (the second acts as an assistant).
- The prayer is said by specially trained people - readers.
- Singing is also present in the Orthodox tradition.
- If the Mother of God is glorified in words that are not entirely clear to you, be patient and attentive. Soon the meaning will dawn on you.
- It's okay to sing along with the choir, just try not to disturb the rest of the congregation.
- A lay rite is also known - the service of the daily circle (here the participation of a priest is not required).
Liturgical prayers
There are two types of prayer actions. The first includes services conducted inside churches only by clergy. The prayer that parishioners read with their pastor is one of the joint services. The text should be pronounced without errors, so try to learn it by heart. Among such prayers it is worth noting:
- "Our Father…";
- Symbol of faith;
- appeal to the sacrament verse;
- song about the Resurrection of Christ;
- exclamations at services during Easter.
The category of liturgical prayers includes troparia, stichera and kontakion. Similar texts can be read at home, but it is better to do this by joining the believers in the temple.
Do you know what prayers only a priest does? Here is their list:
- lighting;
- for the implementation of requirements or sacraments;
- Ephraim the Syrian;
- Eucharistic.
The Importance of Temple Service
You can pray to the Mother of God at home - then you won’t have to wait for the end of the service. So why are so many believers interested in joint prayers?
Icon "King of Glory".
It’s simple - the Lord views the Church as a single organism. Jesus and the Mother of God commanded us to love our neighbors, and our neighbors gather in church. Prayer brings Orthodox Christians together and puts them in a common mood. In addition, joint aspirations make the service more effective.
Spiritual guides recommend keeping track of time, since the devil tempts us with the illusion of “excessive length” of services. On average, we pray no more than 8-10 minutes daily. Some glorify the Mother of God, some glorify the patron saint. It is important to keep these actions under control, even if you go to church service.
Here are some more reasons why you should be in the temple:
- A feeling of unity with God and other people.
- Opportunity to communicate with the priest and other parishioners (after the service ends).
- Proximity to sacred relics.
- Nice calming atmosphere.
Order of services
Joint prayer in the temple is read according to the schedule, at a strictly allotted time. The church charter regulates the service. There are many prayers in churches and monasteries, and they are read daily.
A day in the temple is divided into three parts:
- Morning service.
- Divine Liturgy (main part).
- Evening service (the one that begins around 18.00-19.00).
It is worth noting that there are no clear chronological boundaries for the services. It all depends on the current time of day, but the duration of the event is not limited by the canons. Therefore, you should not ask parishioners about the ends of services - you will not receive clear answers. Better think about the Mother of God or the sacrifice of Jesus, who suffered for our sins - that’s who really knew how to endure. If you want to imagine the approximate boundaries of services, then aim for one and a half to two hours. In some cases, prayer can last for three hours.
Once in the temple, you must distinguish between annual, weekly and daily services. In all cases, the priests read the prayer to the same Mother of God repeatedly. The daily services are closed in a ring throughout the day, and a similar picture is repeated with the weekly and annual cycles. In daily activities there is a basic framework, a regulated order of actions. Other rituals are not strictly specified.
When interested in prayers, pay attention to the following details:
- Daily circle. Events from the biography of the Savior correspond to each hour of the cycle. As you approach the temple, you should have at least some understanding of the life of Jesus. It is also worth taking an interest in the Virgin Mary.
- Weekly circle. Here the Sacred History is connected with certain days of the week, and this connection is reflected in every prayer read.
- Annual circle. Here it is worth considering not only the life of Jesus himself, but also the biographies of his companions (apostles), as well as saints. The Mother of God also plays an important role. Each event is associated with a specific day of the year.
What they sing in the temple
Coming to the temple, we are immersed in an amazing atmosphere of contemplation. We think about how nice it is here and how peaceful it is, how easy it is to pray. With contrition in our hearts and trembling, we repeat the words of the prayer in chorus, but often we do not know what kind of prayer it is and what it is dedicated to. I would like to talk a little about what kind of chants and prayers are performed during worship and about the importance of music in the temple in general.
SYMPHONY SIX PSALMY
The Optina elder Barsanuphius, shortly before his death, spoke to his spiritual child like this: “When you have children, teach them music. But, of course, real music, not dances and songs. Music contributes to the development of perception of spiritual life. The soul becomes refined. She begins to understand spiritual music. Here in our church they read the Six Psalms, and people often leave the church for this time. But they do not understand and do not feel that the Six Psalms is a spiritual symphony, the life of the soul, which captures the entire soul and gives it the highest pleasure. People don't understand this. Their heart is stone. But music helps you feel all the beauty of the Six Psalms.”
Amazing words, aren't they? How deeply they define the role of music in worship.
Indeed, in the Orthodox Church there is a lot of music, very special music, and each chant follows a certain order and each one is very significant. But often for a simple lay parishioner this meaning remains unclear.
For example, you can often hear the following question: “Why are musical instruments not used in Orthodox worship, but only singing?”
The answer to this question determines the meaning of music for worship.
Music is designed to convey to the worshiper the Divine word of the Holy Scriptures; it is connected with the liturgical text and cannot exist in the temple separately from it. Moreover, the human voice is the noblest of all instruments. No matter how beautiful other instruments are, they still remain lifeless. And, despite the fact that the Catholic and Protestant churches have long established a tradition of the participation of musical instruments, especially the organ, the Orthodox Church still strives to glorify God “with one mouth.”
THE MOST ANCIENT SERVICE
The degree of solemnity of the service can be judged by how many chants there are in it. So, for example, the Liturgy, in contrast to the all-night vigil, has practically no readings (except for the reading of the Apostle and the Gospel), and the weekday evening service, on the contrary, contains very few chants. Therefore, we can say that the Liturgy is the most musical of all types of worship.
The Divine Liturgy is the main and most ancient service of the Christian Church. The all-night vigil and other services - prayers, readings and singing - arose much later and are intended to prepare people for the main service - the Divine Liturgy. The Liturgy is always celebrated in the morning or in the first half of the day - before lunch, which is why it is also popularly called mass.
The word “Liturgy” means “common cause,” “public service.” Its central point is the sacrament of the Eucharist.
CHERUBIC SONG
Among the chants of the liturgy, the main ones are “Cherubic Hymn” and “Mercy of the World”. Translated into Russian, the words of the “Cherubic Song” sound like this:
“We, who mysteriously depict cherubs and sing the Trisagion hymn to the Life-giving Trinity, will now put aside all worldly cares. To raise up the King of all, carried invisibly with a spear by the ranks of angels, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.”
The expression “dorinoshima” (translated as “spear-carrying”) has a special meaning in the song. This word, made up of the Greek “dori” (spear) and the Russian “bur”, means: “to accompany someone with spears.” In ancient times, when a newly elected emperor was proclaimed, Roman soldiers solemnly raised him and carried him on a shield in the midst of the legion's spears surrounding him. In the Church, the deacon, as if a representative of an invisible legion of angels, lifts the King of all above his head, on a paten, as if on a shield. He lifts Him up in the humble form of a Lamb, among the prayers of the coming Christians, the true spiritual weapon of the Church.
Believers at this time should stand with their heads bowed and pray to the Lord to remember them and all loved ones in His Kingdom; when the priest says, “May the Lord God remember you and all Orthodox Christians...” you must say in a low voice: “... and may the Lord God remember your priesthood in His Kingdom always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.”
From a musical point of view, the Cherubic Hymn is the lyrical center of the liturgical action. In everyday Orthodox worship there are many amazingly beautiful “Cherubim”, which you listen to with trembling hearts and tears of prayer.
We will tell you about “The Grace of Peace” and some other chants of the Liturgy in the following issues.

I. AT THE ALL-NIGHT VIgil
AT THE EVENING:
Grant, Lord, that this evening we may remain without sin. Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is thy name forever, amen. May Thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, as we trust in Thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord, teach me by thy justification. Blessed art thou, O Lord, enlighten me with thy justification. Blessed are You, Holy One, enlighten me with Your justifications. Lord, Your mercy endures forever: do not despise the works of Your Hand. Praise is due to You, singing is due to You, glory is due to You, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos
Virgin Mary, Rejoice, O Blessed Mary, the Lord is with You; Blessed are You among women and blessed is the Fruit of Your womb, for You have given birth to the Savior of our souls.
I will bless the Lord at all times,/I will make His praise come into my mouth. My soul will glory in the Lord,/ let the meek hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me, / and let us exalt His name together. Seek the Lord and hear me, / and deliver me from all my sorrows. Come to Him and be enlightened,/ and your faces will not be ashamed. This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard and,/ and saved him from all his sorrows. The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him,/ and will deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good;/
Blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. Fear the Lord, all His holy ones, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. We are poor and hungry with riches; but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. Come, children, listen to me, / I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is a man, even if he loves his life, / loves the days and sees good things? Keep your tongue from evil, / and keep your lips from speaking flattery. Turn away from evil, and do good, / seek peace, and marry, and. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are upon their prayer. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, / to consume their memory from the earth. The righteous cried out, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and will save the humble in spirit. Many are the sorrows of the righteous, / and the Lord will deliver me from all of them. The Lord protects all their bones, / not one of them will be broken. The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. The Lord will deliver the souls of His servant, and all who trust in Him will not sin.
Sunday Carol after the Gospel
Having seen the Resurrection of Christ,/ let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus,/ the only Sinless One./ We worship Thy Cross, O Christ,/ and we sing and glorify Thy holy Resurrection:/ For Thou art our God,/ Do we know no other to Thee,/ We call Thy name./ Come, all you faithful,/let us worship the holy Resurrection of Christ;/behold, joy has come to the whole world through the Cross./Always blessing the Lord,/we sing His Resurrection;/having endured the crucifixion,/destroy death through death.
Song of the Blessed Virgin Mary
My soul magnifies the Lord,/ and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
As if you look upon the humility of Your Servant, / behold, from now on all your kindred will please Me.
For the Mighty One has done greatness to Me,/ and holy is His name, and His mercy throughout all generations of those who fear Him.
Create power with Your arm, / squander the proud thoughts of their hearts.

“Having seen the Resurrection of Christ...”
The chant of the all-night vigil, which takes place on the eve of Sunday or on Easter.
Having seen the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only sinless one. We worship Your Cross, O Christ, and we sing and glorify Your holy Resurrection: for You are our God, do we know no other to You, we call Your name. Come, all faithful, let us worship the Holy Resurrection of Christ: behold, through the Cross joy has come to the whole world. Always blessing the Lord, we sing His Resurrection: having endured the crucifixion, destroy death by death.
Can you sing along with the choir?
It's better not to do that. In churches, sometimes they even put up a notice: “It is not blessed to sing along with the choir.” This is not out of harm's way - many people simply do not have an ear for music. This interferes with the harmonious singing of the choir and the people standing nearby. If you really want to sing at the service, just talk to the regent - perhaps he will find a use for you. Many churches have folk choirs.

A little history
Singing in church appeared in the first centuries of Christianity. At first, in churches there was no division between those who prayed and those who sang; everyone present sang during the service. This emphasized the unity of prayer, the unified spirit. Gradually, a division occurred; several believers formed a church choir, which began to be called the choir. This word is translated from Greek as “part of the earth.” Those. Initially, this word only referred to the place where the singers stood. Usually this was some kind of elevation near the altar. Later this place became known as soleya.
Then the word “kliros” began to be used to describe the church choir . After the division into Orthodoxy and Catholicism, a significant difference in the manner of church singing became noticeable. Znamenny, hook singing prevailed in Orthodoxy. And in Catholicism - chorales, which were performed to the accompaniment of a musical instrument, usually an organ.
In Russia, during the reign of Peter the Great, the Znamenny chant, in which the choir sang a melody in unison, was replaced by the partes chant. The musical theme was divided into parts, hence the name.
There were usually four parties:
- soprano;
- alto;
- tenor;
- bass.
This was an innovation and was not immediately accepted in the church environment. Gradually the Znamenny singing faded away.
Antiphonal singing gradually appeared: two choirs sang in turns. Then the canonarchs appeared - readers who proclaimed the line, and the choir repeated it. This is how the stichera sang. The leader of the choir began to be called a “regent” or “shepherd attendant.”
