Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk (secular name: Grigory Valerievich Alfeev) was born in Moscow on July 24, 1966.
In the period from 1973 to 1984 he studied at the Moscow Gnessin Music School.

At the age of 15, he served as a reader in the Moscow Church of the Resurrection of the Word on the Assumption Vrazhek.

Since 1983, he served as a subdeacon under Bishop Pitirim (Nechaev), Metropolitan of Volokolamsk and Yuryev; worked at the Publishing Department of the Moscow Patriarchate in the status of a freelance employee.

After graduating from school in 1984, he entered the Moscow State Conservatory, the composition department.

In the period from 1984 to 1986, he served in the ranks of the USSR Armed Forces.

At the beginning of 1987, leaving (of his own free will) his studies at the conservatory, he entered the Vilna Holy Spiritual Monastery.

On June 19, 1987, he took monastic vows and was given the name Hilarion.

Music

Music occupies an important place in the biography of Metropolitan Hilarion. Since 2006, Alfeev has returned to composing, creating a number of works on Orthodox themes. These are, first of all, the “Divine Liturgy” and “All-Night Vigil”, “Matthew Passion” and “Christmas Oratorio”. The theologian's works were warmly recognized by the creative community of performers, the music was successfully performed by symphony and choral groups under the direction of conductors Vladimir Fedoseev, Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Spivakov, Pavel Kogan, Dmitry Kitayenko and others. Concerts take place not only in Russia, but also in Greece, Hungary, Australia, Canada, Serbia, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, and the USA.

Since 2011, Alfeev and Vladimir Spivakov have been organizing the Moscow Christmas Festival of Sacred Music. A year later, the Volga Festival of Sacred Music starts, the director of which, along with Metropolitan Hilarion, is violinist Dmitry Kogan.

Priestly ministry

On June 21, 1987, he was elevated to the rank of hierodeacon, and two months later, on August 19, to the rank of hieromonk.

In the period from 1988 to 1989, he served as rector of several churches of the Vilna diocese (in the city of Telšiai, the villages of Kolainiai and Tituvenai).

Personal life

Metropolitan Hilarion has served faithfully in the church since his youth; he was tonsured a monk at the age of 20, so there is no need to talk about Alfeev’s personal life. His only beloved and dear person in the world remains his mother Valeria Anatolyevna. Metropolitan Hilarion’s entire life is subordinated to the service of the church.

Dmitry, I had time to reflect and am forced to admit that my spiritual experience is actually much wider and deeper. The period from 1999 to 2002 is just the tip of the iceberg; in the depths, the origins were much earlier. Since early childhood, I have always liked folk tales from different countries and peoples, especially our Russian folk tales. Therefore, as soon as I learned to read, I always read them with rapture. I also really liked the fairy tales shown on television, filmed by our Soviet directors. From these fairy tales I always received a certain boost to my inner core, confirming that Truth always triumphs over evil. Moreover, despite his atheistic upbringing, he always believed in Miracles. He also played with the seven-colored light and magic wands and other attributes from various fairy tales. At the same time, already in childhood I repeatedly encountered real miracles in reality. It’s just that back then it was perceived as a natural process of life, because along with fairy tales, I also enthusiastically read various fantastic stories and works. And so, when I was already in the eighth grade of our Soviet School in the Western Group of Germany, a very unusual incident, vividly connected with a real miracle, happened to me. One day I woke up, and my body stopped listening to me. I can talk, I can think, but I can’t move. And all this without any obvious cause of any illness. My father then perceived this as a simulation on my part. I was offended that even my parents didn’t believe me. And so I lay motionless for three days. The doctors could not make any diagnosis. Then, as far as I remember, I thought about a lot and tried to understand the cause and effect relationship. As I remember, analogies with Ilya Muromtsev, who was also bedridden for unknown reasons, even came to mind. At the same time, I began to analyze what internally I could have done wrong. And then I very often missed German and Russian language lessons, simply playing truant. And at the end of the eighth grade, I had to take exams in these subjects. Then I promised myself that if I recovered, I would fix everything and prepare for the exams better than others. And the Miracle happened - the next day I woke up and got out of bed as if nothing had happened. As I remember, my mother told me about a miracle that she also experienced in childhood. When she was still very young, she became very ill, and they couldn’t bring down her high fever. Doctors have already told her mother that she must be prepared for the fact that the child will not survive. And somehow, in oblivion, my mother says to her mother, I just saw the Virgin in a dream, the one that hangs on the Icon in the room. She was very happy then, since she was a True Orthodox Believer, not arrogant, but did not miss a single service in the Temple and always helped in cleaning this Temple of God. She then told my mother, “Now you will definitely get better, daughter.” And so it happened - in the morning my mother woke up absolutely healthy. Even then I felt dissonance. Before this, my father was an atheist who always achieved everything in life, but did not believe me at a critical moment and the beginning of the realization through practice from Above and Mom’s support that there is something that does not lend itself to simple human logic. By the way, I then kept my promise to myself. I then did something that I will probably never repeat again. I learned all the rules of the Russian language by heart and during the exam, when they didn’t believe me that I hadn’t cheated, I pulled out the first ticket that came my way again and immediately wrote the answers on the board. As far as I remember, even the school director was amazed. Having received the final excellent grades, I ended up getting good grades, since my current grades were between a two and a three. I did the same with the German language, learning the texts for retelling in the same way. By the way, having gone through such life experience, I always have a negative attitude towards the accumulated portfolios in a modern school, since the Transformation of Man is possible at any moment and therefore one cannot always reproach him with old mistakes - sins.
