History of the Cup of Patience icon
In 2000, before the Intercession, one parishioner, leaving the Church of St. John the Warrior, which was built in the Ordzhonikidze district, noticed the face of the Queen of Heaven on the window. Orthodox Christians considered this appearance of the Virgin Mary’s face to be a sign sent from above. At first, the people who served in the temple were afraid to wash the window, because they were afraid of destroying the image. But it was as if it was inside the glass, so the water could not have any effect on the image.
After 3 years had passed since the appearance of the face, an Orthodox Christian woman from the city of Kemerovo saw a vision at night. The woman immediately went to Novokuznetsk, where she told Father Vasily about the need to paint an icon. She announced that it should be called “The Cup of Patience.” The parishioners of the temple where the face of the Virgin Mary appeared were very surprised to learn that there is no such icon. They carefully studied the catalogs of miraculous icons (there are approximately 500 of them), and then began to look for an icon painter.
They chose the artist Vladimir Shubenkin. He presented the painted icon as a gift to Father Vasily. After that, she was transported to St. Andrew’s Monastery, located in Moscow. This was done so that it would be adequately decorated. The masters doing this finished by the patronal feast.
On August 12, she was delivered to Novokuznetsk. There was a procession of the cross. Parishioners claim that they feel the grace emanating from her. But, according to private entrepreneur Sergei, who is its unofficial custodian, some people do not consider what happened to be a miracle. He says that when he traveled to the city of Kemerovo, accompanying the icon, Father Vasily had to face a huge amount of insults. Even some priests accused him of fraud.

In the 1990s, in Kuzbass, as elsewhere in Russia, new churches began to be built, one of which, consecrated in honor of St. John the Warrior, appeared on the outskirts of the large industrial city of Novokuznetsk next to the decaying Zyryanovskaya mine. The community of believers was given an old barracks-type building dating back half a century, which was occupied by a sports school.
Today, neither the building nor the place itself is recognizable. Instead of a barracks there is a marvelous wooden church, decorated with elegant carvings. Vladimir and Svetlana Samoilov, architects from Belov, one of the Kuzbass cities, designed it based on the best examples of northern temple architecture. The interior decoration is made in the style of the 16th century. The area surrounding the temple has turned into a square with miniature fountains and an abundance of flower beds.

The meaning of the icon of the Holy Mother of God “Cup of Patience”
People who saw the icon say that on the glass they saw a cup in the hands of the Child. The Son of God peers into it and drinks away the sins of people. In his sad look one can see sorrow for them and the understanding that he will have to suffer for sinners.
Parishioners visiting the church say that there was a time when people decided to place the image of the Queen of Heaven on glass inside the temple. They were afraid that hooligans might damage her. After they did this, the image disappeared from the glass. They tried to return it using artificial and daylight, but all human actions were useless.
But after the glass was taken back to the street, the images of the Mother of God and Christ began to appear again. Orthodox Christians claim that the Virgin Mary, by such a miracle, makes it clear that She is destined to protect people, and not the Heavenly Queen.
