The meaning of the Holy Family icon and how the image helps, the text of the prayer

This shrine is of enormous importance in the Orthodox tradition, but causes mixed reactions from many church ministers. This image has not been canonized, so it is considered more of a painting made in an iconographic style. The Holy Family icon became especially popular in Israel. In this country it can be found in any monastery, and bought in every store. By praying before the image they wish to achieve peace in the family or the inviolability of sacred marriage.

Origin story

The original image came to Russia in the 18th century from Italy. It was brought by a nobleman who studied maritime affairs in Italy on the orders of Peter I. The young man was impressed by Raphael’s painting “The Holy Family” and purchased a similar copy. Upon returning home, he gave it to a relative for safekeeping.

Legend has it that the owner of the painting soon died, and the new owner of the list from the painting of the great Italian transferred it to the Trinity Church on Pokrovka in Moscow. The icon was placed in the narthex. For some time she was not noticed by believers. In the Trinity Church there is another similar image: the icon of the “Three Joys”, also brought from Italy. The difference between the images is that the “Holy Family” icon is recognized by believers, but is not recognized by the church. The reason is the discrepancy between the image and the biblical content. The icon of the “Three Joys” is canonical.

The miraculous properties of the image of the “Holy Family” appeared 40 years after its acquisition by the church. One woman prayed to the Mother of God to deliver her husband and son from unfair slander and return their property. In a dream, she received a command from her to find the icon of the Holy Family and pray to it. Soon the unfortunate woman’s requests were fulfilled. Rumors of the miracle spread throughout Moscow, and then throughout Russia. From that time on, a pilgrimage was established to the Holy Family icon.

The attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church to the image of the “Holy Family”, as a false icon, is explained by the compositional structure and content, which is more reminiscent of a painting. According to the Holy Scriptures, Joseph was of advanced age, about 100 years old, and the Virgin Mary was a young 15-year-old girl. The icon “Holy Family” depicts Joseph and Mary who are close in age.

Catholic icons allow for a freer interpretation of biblical stories. Paintings by great Italian artists (Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci) on biblical subjects are reflected in holy images.

The icon of the “Holy Family” has the greatest veneration in Israel, among the Jews. Tourists and pilgrims visiting Jerusalem bring copies for home iconostases.

Interpretation of the image

According to the common people, this icon is important as the patroness of the family hearth. How does an image help? Find a husband or wife, maintain love and fidelity between them. Even for weddings, they began to give the “Holy Family” to the newlyweds, although traditionally the image of the Lord (Savior Not Made by Hands) and the Mother of God (usually this is “Kazan”) is needed.

In fact, Orthodoxy already has a similar icon called “Three Joys.” It is made in the Italian style, is miraculous, and has its own interesting history of veneration. But the most important thing is that all canons are observed in it. So is it worth inventing new shrines when there are already enough of them?

Description and meaning in Orthodoxy

The icon “Holy Family” depicts: Joseph, the Virgin Mary and Jesus in infancy. The Most Pure Virgin bowed her head on Joseph's shoulder, who, hugging her, put his right hand on her shoulder. The Hand of the Virgin Mary lies in the Hand of Joseph. Baby Jesus makes a blessing gesture with his right hand, and joins his left hand to the palms of his mother and named father.

The icon evokes warm feelings. Vivid images serve as the personification of care and mutual understanding in the family. The image conveys the role of Joseph as a protector in the earthly life of the Mother of God and the little Messiah. The Virgin Mary is his faithful companion and loving mother. The figures of adults on the icon mean a reliable barrier protecting the little Savior from trouble and evil people.

It is possible to understand the depth and purity of the relationship between the Mother of God and Joseph only by knowing the Holy Scriptures. The biblical text says that Joseph was betrothed to the Virgin Mary, but not married. They were not spouses. According to the laws of that time, a woman had to live next to a man: her husband or son. Joseph gave the Mother of God protection from gossip and persecution, providing for their needs with his labor, maintaining a respectful attitude and distance. The need for such protection is evidenced by the Holy Scriptures.

The Gospel of Matthew says that after the betrothal, Joseph learned that his bride was pregnant and wanted to “let her go” in order to avoid shame for himself and Mary. The Archangel Gabriel, who appeared to him in a dream, told him to accept Mary as his wife, for she was sinless before him. The Son will be born from the Holy Spirit, the Savior of people from their sins. Joseph the carpenter “took in his wife and did not know her.”

The secret of the Immaculate Conception was known to the spouses and priests of the temple where Mary was raised from the age of three and took a vow of celibacy. For people, including Joseph's children from his first marriage, he was the natural father of Jesus. There could be no doubt about this, since Joseph loved Jesus and treated him as his own son.

After his death, Jacob, Joseph’s son from his first marriage, became a support for the Mother of God and the young Jesus. Having become an adult, Jesus took on this responsibility. Christ, crucified on the cross, told the Apostle John Zebedee that from now on he would become the son of the Mother of God and would take care of her. He addressed the same words to his mother.

The Orthodox canon does not allow deviations in form and subject matter in the depiction of saints, the Mother of God, the righteous, and Jesus Christ. In the “Holy Family” icon, Joseph touches the Mother of God, his gaze is directed not at the Son of God, but into the distance, which distorts and exaggerates his role in the family.

There are no such violations on the “Three Joys” icon, canonized by the Orthodox Church. In the foreground are the Mother of God and little Jesus, behind her are Joseph and young John the Baptist, Christ’s second cousin on his mother’s side. Some lists depict Blessed Elizabeth, her husband Zachary, and the mother of the Mother of God, Anna.

The similarity of the images in content made the icons equivalent to believers. The image of the Three Joys is sometimes called the Holy Family. Prayer requests do not differ; the day of remembrance coincides. Which icon to pray to is the choice of the believer.

Where can I find the original and lists

The original icon was irretrievably lost in the 30s of the last century.

There is a list of it in the Church of the Holy Trinity. There are no other places in Russia where you can pray to the Mother of God, the Savior and Joseph. The reason is the lack of canonization. Pilgrims or tourists in Jerusalem have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the image.

Paintings by famous artists

With the beginning of the Renaissance, the iconography of the Holy Family in the West was replaced by actual paintings. Often artists are not interested in historical or theological details, but in the aesthetic beauty of those depicted.

Michelangelo

Created at the beginning of the 16th century, the painting is called “Madonna of Doni”. This name has nothing to do with the Sacred History, the work was simply created for the wedding of the noble Agnolo Doni from Florence. The center of the composition is Mary holding Jesus in her arms. Joseph hugs both of them. In the background is St. John the Baptist, other heroes of the Gospel, presented naked. Art critics believe that the artist’s goal was to show the perfection of the body...

Rafael Santi

Contemporary Michelangelo presented the Family as contemporary people - this can be seen from the surrounding environment and clothing. He also departed from traditional depictions of St. Joseph, wrote him without a beard, which makes the old man really difficult to recognize for the uninitiated.

Rembrandt

Painting from the 17th century. represents Maria as an ordinary European city woman of that time. In the background, the figure of Joseph is lost in the twilight, above them are angels, painted in a typically European manner.

Rubens

The painting represents the Child on the lap of the Madonna. In the background is not only St. Joseph is also right. Anna, mother of the Most Pure One.

Dutch artist Pieter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) Holy Family with Saints Francis and Anne and the Child Saint John the Baptist

Titian

This painting is from the early 16th century. also called “The Holy Family with a Shepherd”, since it depicts an episode described by St. Luke, when the shepherds, who learned from the Angel about the birth of the Savior, came to worship Him.

The Holy Family with the Shepherd is a painting by Titian from 1510, now in the National Gallery in London. It was also previously attributed to Tony van Dyck]], who created a drawing copying it. After passing through other private collections, it was bequeathed to the National Gallery by William Holwell Carr in 1831.

Esteban Murillo

The picture shows a kind of everyday scene: Jesus playing, holding a bird, a puppy interested in this game. She is watched lovingly by Mary and Joseph (presented as quite young). It is no longer possible to recognize the Holy Family without special explanations.

Nicolas Poussin

The canvas from 1665 is kept by the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg. Also represented here are St. John the Baptist, right. Elisaveta. The characters themselves are recognizable, since their attire is more or less authentic, and the environment corresponds to the era.

El Greco

The Spanish artist (2nd half of the 17th century) depicted a scene quite far from historical reality, where not only Jesus, Madonna, Joseph, but also Mary Magdalene are present.

Holy Family. Canvas, oil. 1595 The artist El Greco painted it during his stay in Toledo. Located at the de Tavera Hospital in this city.

Vereshchagin

This is one of the most unconventional interpretations of the plot. The Russian artist, creating the picture, was under the impression of E. Renan’s book “The Life of Jesus,” “cleansed” of the miracles of the “biography” of Christ. We see an everyday scene from the life of an ordinary family - Joseph working at a workbench, Mary busy with children (according to Renan, Jesus had siblings), and finally, an adult Jesus, secluded with a book.

What can you ask for before the image?

The image on the icon eloquently makes it clear what you can pray for. The “Holy Family” is a symbol of the strength of the bonds that bind a man and a woman, their responsibility to each other and to the child.

Believers turn to the image if there are problems in the family:

  • during quarrels between husband and wife;
  • misunderstandings and conflicts with children;
  • infidelity of one of the spouses.

They ask the sacred image for help in order to meet a worthy companion in life. Prayer requests help to protect the honor and dignity of loved ones and to resolve financial problems.

It must be remembered that the church does not recognize civil marriages. It makes no sense to pray for the preservation of such relationships or the destruction of someone else's marriage.

In the home iconostasis, the icon should be prayed in accordance with established church rules. The image should be in the corner, oriented to the east, below the icons with images of the Lord, the Trinity, the Mother of God, and saints.

Before prayer, you should confess to the priest, cleanse your soul and thoughts of envy and malice. A candle blessed in the church is lit near the image. The text of the petition should be memorized. After praying, they cross themselves three times, bow from the waist and kiss the icon. The candle is left to burn until it goes out on its own.

When believers pray to the Most Pure Virgin and Joseph the Betrothed

  • They turn to Joseph and the Blessed Virgin in an effort to save the family from quarrels and troubles.
  • Wives whose husbands are prone to fornication and adultery ask the Most Pure Virgin to grant wisdom and restraint to their spouse.
  • You can pray at this icon not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. Prayer at the icon of the “Three Joys” will help a lost soul return to the right path.
  • People who have not found a spouse turn to the Blessed Virgin and Joseph the Betrothed with prayer appeals asking for help in finding a soul mate.
  • The prayer is read in days of mental torment and sorrow.

Lyrics

Prayers are offered to the holy image, similar in content to the appeal to the “Three Joys” icon of the Mother of God.
