Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God - what it helps with, meaning

Another image of the Mother of God, which is closely connected with the history of Russia, is revered as miraculous and is an example of icon painting. The Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is of the same type as the Kazan Icon, even their holiday is on the same day. True, it looks a little different, and also has its own unique history.

History of the icon

This happened somewhere in the middle of the 18th century. Shortly before his death, the ruling Bishop of Belgorod, Joasaph, saw in a dream the image of the Virgin Mary, who was among all kinds of garbage and in her own words expressed a feeling of strong resentment for the disregard. Later, when the saint of the Russian Orthodox Church was looking around the diocese of the Church of the Resurrection in Kharkov, he found an abandoned, decaying image of the Most Holy Theotokos, which appeared to him in a dream. He reproached the clergy for such careless handling of the shrine and ordered the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God to be placed in the appropriate place. The bishop prayed before the icon for three days and soon the Virgin began to grant healing to those in need of help.

Since then, the sand icon of the Mother of God has more than once helped those who were sick during periods of various epidemics. And during the First World War, the number of deaths began to decline altogether after the arrival of the icon of the Mother of God.

The history of the painting of the holy face

The holy image of the Virgin Mary was copied from the Kazan icon. According to legend, Saint Joseph, who was the bishop of Belgorod at that time, and was quite ill, saw in a dream an icon lying on a garbage heap in the vestibule of one of the churches. A special radiance emanated from it and the voice of the Mother of God said that this icon was intended for the whole country, as exuding divine grace. And the church ministers violated the holy face in such a way.

Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Peschanskaya”

Having traveled from Kursk to Mariupol, shortly before his death, the bishop was surprised to find exactly such an icon in the Resurrection Church in the city of Izyum. The holy image was used as a vestibule, behind which burnt incense coals were thrown. The saint strictly reprimanded the priests of the local parish for their disdainful attitude towards the image of the Mother of God and ordered them to find a more worthy place for the icon. The face was immediately placed in the icon case. Joseph spent three days in the city and every day - morning and evening - he came to church and prayed fervently before the image of the Most Pure Virgin Mary.

In 1792, the church was moved from the suburbs to Peski. Rumor spread among the people about the appearance of the miraculous icon and crowds of pilgrims began to flock to it.

On a note! Religious processions were held with the Peschansky icon more than once during the raging cholera epidemic, after which the disease subsided. At the prayers of believers, numerous miracles of healing were performed in front of the image.

After the 1917 revolution, the icon was sent abroad and its trace was lost. But the miraculous image was found again, and they also found a list donated to the church by Emperor Nicholas II.

Location of the icon

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the monastery of the icon was the Holy Ascension Cathedral. The Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God remained in Izyum for a long time, but after that the real shrine disappeared without a trace. Believers saw only copies - lists made from the image of the Mother of God, depicting the Blessed Virgin, so many began to be interested in the question of where the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is now located. And it is not surprising, but to this day the original has returned again and is located within the walls of the temple in the city of Izyum, where everyone who prays can turn for help.

The Peschanskaya icon of the Mother of God is transferred to a new temple, where miracles begin to happen

The exact reasons for the transfer of the sand icon of the Mother of God to the new stone church are unknown. Perhaps it was due to the recent French invasion or the old building became too small for the growing flock.

In any case, in 1826 the icon case was moved to a new temple, which was rebuilt on Peski.

Every year more and more people came to the new Sandy temple, rumors about the miraculous nature of the image quickly spread throughout the province.

The name “Peschanskaya” was assigned to the icon.

One of the miracles of the icon was the resurrection of the dead boy Peter. His parents were full of grief and despair. And it is understandable, all their children died one after another from an unknown illness.

And when their last child fell ill, out of despair they decided to go to pay tribute to the shrine in Izyum. On the way, their son died, but they did not bury him and decided to take the child’s body to the church.

Arriving at the Peschansky Church, they immediately went to the image of the Queen of Heaven and began to pray earnestly, asking for the healing of their son. After the third prayer, the boy screamed wildly, and his parents fainted.

Later, when they came to their senses, they immediately explained why the child screamed so much. After this incident, prayers for healing and intercession began to be offered to the image.

The meaning of the Peschanskaya icon

The Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God was of no small importance not only for the entire Russian country, but also for each individual individual. In its image, this icon of the Virgin Mary is similar to the image of the Guide and the Kazan icon. It, like the mentioned icons, means a lot to believers and is a truly miraculous image. In the icon, the Mother of God is represented together with the Child on her left hand. The Mother raises her palm to the Child, while the Son of God holds the book, which contains all knowledge.

For Your Holy Name

The Church of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God in Moscow was opened quite recently - in 2001. This event is preceded by small miracles. They testify that Our Lord was pleased with the construction of this temple. After all, back in the early 90s, the territory where this Orthodox complex is located was a ruined kindergarten. A lot of land was then sold off for secular institutions - shops and restaurants. And only the territory in Izmailovo was not sold. When they decided to build a church of the icon of the Mother of God (Peschanskaya), the capital gave this land completely free of charge. The laity helped raise money for the improvement of the temple and church utensils. It is truly a miracle that it was built in just 20 days, in time for Easter. Thanks to God's help and the efforts of the people, the clergy, together with the parishioners, have already served the All-Night Vigil before the Great Resurrection. At the moment, this Church of the Icon of the Mother of God of Peschanskaya is one of the few built in honor of this image.

How does the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God help?

The Peschanskaya Icon is not inferior to other images of the Mother of God in the matter of miraculousness. The icon helps military wives and protects men from all the negativity that befalls a person during times of armed conflicts and wars.

The Peschanskaya icon helps to overcome difficulties in life and various troubles, promotes mental and physical healing, curing believers with serious illnesses.

In addition, the icon is not powerless before those who sincerely pray, facilitating the overcoming of harmful habits, needs and troubles.

Prayers before the icon

Every week, in the chapel of the Leningrad hospital, which was erected to venerate Bishop Joasaph, services are held, where the akathist to the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God is read. In other cases, it is customary to read the akathist to coincide with festive events, the most important of which is the day of remembrance of the Peschanskaya Shrine. It is celebrated on July 21st.

In addition to akathists, prayers before the icon are valid on this day. It is believed that the icon gains special power and then people who asked for healing and protection from bad weather receive a helping hand. The prayer that should be said when asking is presented below:

The other day, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Peschanskaya" was brought to our church for veneration, about which I

and many parishioners knew nothing..

Here's what we managed to learn from the Internet... Among the many blessed icons of the Mother of God, a special place is occupied by those in which She showed mercy to the Russian army. Not all of these shrines are well known. We love and honor “Vladimirskaya”, “Donskaya”, “Znamenie”. But who knows, for example, about the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God,

Icon of the Mother of God of Peschanskaya

which, like “Port Arthur” and “Augustovskaya”, during the war years became evidence of the care of the Mother of God for our Motherland? It was about her, about Peschanskaya, that Saint Joasaph of Belgorod said: “In this icon the special grace of God abounds; in it, the Most Holy Lady shows a special sign of Her intercession for this village and the country as a whole.” The history of the icon is directly related to the life and works of the great ascetic.

One day (this was in 1754), while touring his diocese, he arrived in the city of Izyum, Kharkov province. In the Church of the Ascension in Zamość, Saint Joasaph was surprised to discover an icon of the Mother of God, which served as a partition behind which coal for the censer was poured. The saint, falling to his knees, asked forgiveness from the Mother of God for neglecting Her icon. Then he ordered the image to be placed in the icon case. In 1792, the Church of the Ascension, due to being flooded by the flooded river, was moved to a new location, in Peski. In this regard, the icon of the Mother of God received the name “Peschanskaya”. Saint Joasaph stayed in Izyum for three days. All this time, he came to the temple in the morning and evening and prayed before the holy icon of the Mother of God. News of this soon spread throughout the city.

Subsequently it became known that before the trip the Saint had a prophetic dream. In a dream, he walked around churches and in one of them, in a pile of rubbish, he saw the image of the Mother of God. A radiance emanated from the image. A voice rang out: “Look what the servants of this temple have done to My face! My image is intended for the whole country to be a source of grace, but they have cast it into rubbish!”

Seeing the Church of the Ascension, the Saint recognized the one he had visited in a dream, and then, having found the icon, he was convinced that this was the image that the dream vision told him about. In 1819, construction of a new stone church began in Izyum, since the old Church of the Ascension in Sands had fallen into disrepair. One rich landowner's wife died at this time. During her lifetime, she especially revered the Peschanskaya Icon and donated a gilded robe for it. Before her death, the woman begged her husband, known for his stinginess, to complete the construction of the temple. He did just that. And he told the abbot how in a dream his wife appeared to him with the Peschanskaya icon, from which rays emanated. Thanks to generous donations, the church was soon built. Peasant Ivan Kolesnikov from the Kharkov province made a promise to visit the Holy Land and venerate the Holy Sepulcher. He came to Peski and prayed with tears before the holy icon. Soon an unknown lady approached him, asked what he was praying for, and handed him 500 rubles with the words: “Fulfill your vow.” Subsequently, this peasant became a monk in Jerusalem. In 1831, he received from the Patriarch of Jerusalem as a gift a particle of the Tree of the Life-Giving Cross and the relics of the Hieromartyr John. He donated the relics to the Peschanskaya Church, where they are still located. In 1830, a cholera epidemic occurred in Izyum. Residents hoisted the icon in the city square and served a prayer service in front of it. Then she walked around all the streets and houses. The disease has subsided. A quarter of a century later, cholera reappeared in these places. And again the Mother of God showed Her mercy from the Peschanskaya icon, healing a seriously ill woman. The city of Izyum gained all-Russian fame. Lines of pilgrims reached the shrine. For decades, the celibate flow of grace did not dry up. But time passed - and an era of disasters came for Russia. The First World War began. At this time, the Russian people had already begun their disastrous descent into the abyss of godlessness and anarchy. Faith in all strata of society has become significantly impoverished. And it took the most severe trials for the few Russian people who retained their sanity to awaken an ardent zeal for their father’s shrines and hope for help from above. On October 4, 1915, at the height of the war, the icon was delivered to Headquarters for the purpose of making a religious procession with it on all fronts. Not long before this, Saint Joasaph of Belgorod had two miraculous apparitions in which he warned: “Only the Mother of God alone can save Russia!” The saint ordered a religious procession with a miraculous image. This is what Prince N.D. Zhevakhov, a participant in this religious procession that took place on October 2, 1915, writes: “What I experienced was experienced, along with me, by these tens of thousands of people, and I understood why these people were crying, why filled the air with loud groans, why did this huge crowd, always lively and cheerful, always proud and self-confident, suddenly become silent and quiet... Because in this crowd there was not a single person who would not shudder when meeting the shrine... because everyone felt that the fear of God, which in their eyes devalued everything earthly and reminded them of the terrible judgment of the Lord... Invisible threads connected heaven and earth...” Under the skillful pen of an eyewitness of those terrible days, pictures of the past come to life - a religious procession with banners and lit candles, enveloped in sorrowful forebodings, crying people, the evening twilight, among which the miraculous icon burns like heat... From the Kharkov church the icon was transferred to a special carriage, which delivered it to Mogilev. The Icon of the Mother of God stayed at Headquarters until mid-December. “During this time,” recalls Prince Zhevakhov, “not only were there no defeats at the front, but, on the contrary, there were only victories, as anyone who checks this fact from telegrams from the front from October 4 to December 15, 1915 can be convinced.” It would seem, how not to fall to the miraculous shrine with a prayer for the salvation of the Fatherland? However, the religious procession along the front line never took place. The will of Saint Joasaph was not fulfilled. Insane blindness attacked those who decided the fate of the Motherland. A story similar to what happened in Port Arthur ten years earlier occurred. And the ending was natural. It is not the Heavenly Powers that reject us. It is we who refuse their help. The awareness of the need to return to their shrines, under the shadow of the House of God, came to the Russian people only seven decades later. And the religious procession with the Peschanskaya Icon still took place. The Peschanskaya miraculous icon of the Mother of God is located in the Holy Ascension Cathedral Izyum (city), st. Moskovskaya, 30). It was named Peschanskaya after the place where it was found and located in the village of Peski (now located within the city of Izyum). Prayer of the Peschanskaya Icon of the Mother of God.

O Most Merciful and Most Merciful Mother of God, Patroness of our city of Izyum and our country, and also of the whole world to the Prayer Book, accept the kneeling of our minds and hearts and hear the prayers sent to You in the tenderness of our souls, as from ancient times you received the prayers of loving souls here, before lifted up by Your icon. Help us in defeating the charms and temptations of this world, do not allow us to be rejected by eternal heavenly bliss. You are our only joy and consolation in this temporary life, You are our only hope in eternal life. We believe that You, with Your Motherly love and condescension, have worthy us with You of the longed-for Kingdom of Your Son. We therefore ask you: do not retreat from us, O All-Good One, protect us from all the snares of the enemy, do not allow us to lose God’s mercy through our sins, remove from us laziness in prayer and visiting the temple of God. Deliver us from cowardice, despondency, enmity, anger, suspicion, envy, slander, hatred and demonic pride. Give understanding to those who have trampled the commandments of the Church of Christ. Grant peace and love to our relatives, so that parents and children may live in harmony. May the truth of God be in our country, may the patristic customs be preserved among our people. Offer, O All-Blessed One, fervent prayers before God for the pacification of the whole world, so that the human race will not perish in the flames of worldwide devastation, so that all people will know their Heavenly Father and You, the Mother of God, the Intercessor of the Christian race. Bring all nations to true repentance and correction of sinful lives, so that the day of God’s terrible judgment will not be terrible for us, but the Lord will vouchsafe us with You the eternal joy of heaven, to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen. Troparion, tone 4
