In 1889, Elder Ambrose of Optina gave the blessing to Ilaria, the abbess of the Belevsky Monastery, to create for him an image of the Mother of God as an example of a completely new, non-traditional icon painting. Already in 1890, the abbess gave him a work by the church painter Hieromonk Daniel: in it, the All-Tsarina rises above the earth, sitting on a cloud. Behind her image one can see a sprawling grain field, and in the lower plan of the picture there are compressed spikelets collected into sheaves. The hands of the Mother of God raised to heaven froze in a gesture of blessing.

    The image of the Queen of Heaven “Different of Loaves” was painted at the request and blessing of Elder Ambrose, a resident of the Optina Hermitage. Hieroschemamonk Ambrose is known as a great ascetic of Rus'. He loved the Most Holy Theotokos very much, honored all the holidays dedicated to Her, and especially intensified his prayer on these days.

    Image of the Queen of Heaven “Different of the Loaves”

    In 1889, Father Ambrose asked to paint an icon of the Most Pure One and gave the image the name “Spreader of the Loaves.” In addition, the elder composed a special chorus for the akathist to be sung before the icon and appointed a day for the celebration of the new image. With this icon, Father Ambrose blessed the convent he founded in the village. Shamordino, which is located 12 km from Optina Pustyn. Before his departure to the Lord, Elder Ambrose ordered many photographs with this image and sent them to his spiritual children. It is interesting that the day of the elder’s burial fell precisely on the date of the celebration of this icon.

    History of prayer and image

    The end of the 19th century in Russia was a poor harvest, drought led to famine and despair. Prayers to God for help were heard from all homes, churches and temples. In 1889, the Monk Ambrose, an elder of the Optina Hermitage, gave his blessing to paint an icon of the Mother of God, to which everyone would pray for the harvest. A year later, the icon came into the possession of Ambrose. He gave it the name “Different of Loaves” and declared a holiday on October 15 (28 according to the new style). The prayer “Spreader of the Loaves” was read in front of an icon of the Mother of God sitting on the clouds and holding her hands in a gesture of blessing.

    In the image, the Mother of God looks from heaven at a field where crops are being gathered into sheaves. The image was painted by Ambrose of Optina himself, and the image of the Mother of God was taken from the icon of “All Saints”. The icon was kept by the saint in the last years of his life, which he dedicated to the founding of the Shamordino monastery. In 1891, all the fields in the area produced a bumper harvest that lasted for the next year, but famine continued to reign in other parts of the country. Copies of the icon were distributed in Orthodox churches so that others could read the prayer in front of the Bread Bearer icon.

    The world said goodbye to the Monk Ambrose in 1891, on a very important day for him - October 15. Although the icon created with his blessing does not have a long history, it became an assistant to the people. The prayer to the Mother of God “Different of Loaves” is read for success in all types of affairs.

    Meaning and description of the image

    The image of the Queen of Heaven is distinguished by unusual iconography, previously unknown. In the icon, the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted sitting on a cloud over a wheat field. The field has ripened, and several sheaves have already appeared below. But some of the bread has not yet been cut. The Mother of God stretched out her arms in a cross shape, and her merciful but stern gaze is directed at us.

    The cloud is an image of heavenly water and fertility. It saturates the soil with moisture, which produces ears of grain tied into sheaves. The Queen of Heaven blesses the bread that every person needs daily to nourish the body.

    The name “Control” means “to be filled” and “to help.” The name of the image indicates that the Mother of God helps people in obtaining their daily bread. But for an Orthodox person, “daily bread” is not only a food product. After all, it is said that “man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Saint Maximus the Confessor said that people are taught to pray for their daily bread. This refers to the Lord's Prayer. But at the same time, the Lord gave the commandment not to worry about food and clothing. Therefore, bread must be understood as food that comes down from Heaven and gives eternal life.

    The field on the icon can be understood as spiritual life, which makes the soul closer to God. Each spikelet represents all the people. The sheaves depicted on the icon can be attributed to the Gospel words of the Lord that when ripe, the sickle is sent to the harvest (Mark 4: 29). The iconography figuratively shows the Last Judgment, in which sinners will be separated from the righteous.

    This image should not be confused with the “Bread” icon of the Mother of God. These are two different images with their own history and iconography. The “bread store” was miraculously given to the monk of the Solovetsky monastery, Philip, who meekly carried out obedience in the bakery. Over time, Father Philip became a metropolitan.

    How does the “Different of Loaves” icon help?

    In 1891, there was a famine in Russia due to a poor harvest. But in the Kaluga region and in the field of the Shamordinsky monastery there was a harvest. This phenomenon can be called the first miracle of this icon.

    In 1892, a drought occurred in the Voronezh region, and famine began due to crop failure. A novice at that time of the already deceased Father Ambrose sent a copy of the icon to the Pyatnitsky convent, located in the suffering Voronezh region. In the monastery, a prayer service was served before the received image. After that, it started to rain and the drought ended.

    Before the icon they pray for the following needs:

    • hunger;
    • drought;
    • crop failure.

    The Queen of Heaven, like a loving Mother, sends help to those praying in any needs and troubles. It is important that a person does not have a consumer attitude. You need to pray sincerely, with repentance and humility.

    You need to pray in front of the icon during periods of drought and crop failure.
    In prayer to the Most Pure One, people also ask:

    • strengthening spirituality and faith;
    • acquisitions of prayer;
    • eradication of lack of faith.

    Honor and Celebration

    The Holy Synod did not bless the veneration of the image, but Russian Orthodox people, who felt the truth in their hearts, prayed before the icon and received help.

    Days of celebration

    Father Ambrose set the date for the celebration of the image as October 15/28. This is the period when field work ends, when the harvest has already been harvested. You can and should pray in front of the icon on any day of the year, ask for the harvest during its growth and ripening. But the date of celebration must be marked with prayer.

    Date of celebration of the image – October 15/28

    Lists icons

    In 1892, by decision of the Holy Synod, the miraculous image was removed from the Shamordino monastery. There is an assumption that it is located in Lithuania, near the city of Vilnius. This opinion is based on the fact that the temple “Joy of All Who Sorrow,” located there, was erected with the blessing of Elder Nektarios of Optina, the last of the spirit-bearing fathers of the desert. But the icon found in the Baltic states has a different image of the sky. This can be judged from its copies.

    Numerous lists that gradually began to appear have undergone some changes, which distinguishes them from the original. Icon painters saw the sky and the cornfield in their own way. Many modern icons depict the Queen of Heaven surrounded by an oval glow with rays of light and stars. The Shamordino Monastery now houses a modern list. It was created adhering to the canons of ancient Russian icon painting.

    It is important not to confuse the icon with the image of the “Helper of Sinners.” The word “Sporuchnitsa” means “Guarantor” or “Mediator” for sinners before God.

    Temples in honor of the icon

    Dozens of temples were erected in honor of that image. For example, in the Moscow region in the city of Shchelkovo there is such a temple near a bakery. Of course, a temple located on the territory of Optina Pustyn was consecrated in honor of this icon. On the day of veneration of the image, a patronal feast is held in churches consecrated in his honor. This is an important event, and many pilgrims try to participate in worship in these churches.

    Icon “Spreader of the Loaves”: history of appearance

    The idea of painting such an unusual image belonged to Elder Ambrose Optinsky (1812-1891). The icon was nicknamed “The Spreader of the Loaves.” What does such an unusual name mean? Let us turn to the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language by Vladimir Ivanovich Dahl (1801-1872). The word "argue" has meaning

    “to help, promote, benefit, or improve, fertilize; strengthen, increase; bring happiness, good luck, go for future use.”

    With this interpretation of the word, we can say that believers place their hope in receiving help from the Mother of God. And not only in the salvation of the soul, but also in earthly labors, for example, in agriculture.

    There are two versions about the authorship of the image “Different of Loaves”.

    According to some sources, the icon was painted in 1889 by the abbess of the Bolkhov Mother of God of All Saints Convent (Oryol region) Ilaria.

    According to another Tradition, the image of the Mother of God was painted in 1890 by the Optina Pustyn monk Daniel (1837-1907). It is reliably known that the icon was especially revered by the Monk Ambrose of Optina. He bequeathed to his spiritual children, the nuns of the Shamorda monastery (Kaluga region), to pray before her. The Monk Ambrose gave many copies of the miraculous icon to the laity who turned to him for advice.

    With his blessing, on October 15 (October 28, new style) in the Shamordino monastery, it was approved to perform a festive vigil in front of the icon “The Spreader of the Loaves.” Before the usual akathist to the Theotokos there was a reading of the refrain written by the elder:

    “Rejoice, O Gracious One, the Lord is with You, grant us, the unworthy, the dew of Your grace and show Your mercy.”

    Now in many churches you can find this image of the Mother of God. The prototype is supposedly located in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” in Mikniškės (Latvia). There is a legend that Ambrose of Optina appeared to Hieromonk Pontius Rupyshev (1877-1939) in 1917. The monk gave instructions to take the icon to the Baltic states.

    Prayer to the icon of the Mother of God “Spreader of the Loaves”

    “Oh, Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, Merciful to the Lady, Queen of Heaven and earth, every Christian home and family, Blesser of those who work, those in need of inexhaustible wealth, the orphans and widows, and all people, the Nourisher!

    To our Nourisher, who gave birth to the Nourisher of the Universe and the Spreader of our breads, You, Lady, send Your Motherly blessing to our city, villages and fields, and to every house that has hope in You. Moreover, with reverent awe and a contrite heart, we humbly pray to Thee: be also a wise Housebuilder for us, Thy sinful and unworthy servants, who organizes our lives well.

    Keep every community, every home and family in piety and Orthodoxy, like-mindedness, obedience and contentment. Feed the poor and needy, support old age, educate babies, instruct everyone to sincerely cry out to the Lord: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

    Save, Most Pure Mother, Your people from all need, illness, famine, destruction, hail, fire, from all evil conditions and all disorder. Grant peace and great mercy to our monastery, to the homes and families and to every Christian soul and to our entire country, so that we glorify Thee, our most merciful Nourisher and Nurse, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen".

    Everything a person has, he receives by the grace of God. God gives us what is useful and in the necessary quantity. In front of the “Spreader of the Loaves” icon, people pray for salvation from drought and the granting of a harvest, but the image should not be perceived as a means of obtaining material abundance or benefit.
