One day a boy came to the icon; he was about 10-11 years old. He read a prayer to the Mother of the House-Builder from beginning to end. Then, after a short silence, he added that he really needed the help of the Saint, and asked not to leave him without her protection. As he headed towards the exit, he was stopped by a priest who asked how he knew such a powerful prayer and why he was crying. The boy said that his name is Ilya, his mother is sick and is in the hospital, and his old grandmother can no longer see anything. They need to pay for mom's treatment or she will die. My grandmother believes in God very much and taught me prayer, sending me here to ask for help.

Three days later, his grandmother told him that a woman had been found who paid for the treatment in full and left them money for living. Ilya immediately realized that this was the help of the Mother of the Lord God and ran back to the temple to thank him. Praying in front of the icon, tears flowed again, but this time from happiness and boundless gratitude.

The history of the appearance of the miraculous face of the Mother of God

The origin of the Economissa prayer has an interesting legend. History says that once on Mount Athos in the Lavra of St. Athanasius, trouble happened. Due to severe hunger, all the monks had to leave their monastery and, subsequently, Elder Afanasy decided to leave after them.

However, before he had time to move far, the Virgin came out to meet him and persuaded him to return to the Lavra. Her appearance was surprising because women were forbidden to climb the Holy Mountain. When asked who she was, the woman introduced herself as the Mother of the Lord, the one who was worshiped in their sacred monastery.

As proof, the Mother of God ordered the elder to hit the nearest stone with his staff. As soon as Athanasius carried out the decree, life-giving moisture gushed out of the stone in a rapid stream. The monk turned around, but there was no trace of the Virgin.

He returned to the Lavra and was amazed - the edges were full of food. Soon the monks who had left earlier began to return to the Mountain. In memory of this miracle, the icon of the Mother of God “Housebuilder” was painted, which depicts the Mother of God with the baby Jesus on her lap, and on either side of her are Athanasius of Athos and Michael of Sinad, bowed in the deepest bow.

From then until the present day, there was no housekeeper in the Lavra monastery, only an assistant housekeeper or sub-housekeeper.

Where is the "Economissa" image located?

Not everyone can afford to travel to Mount Athos, and women are not allowed to enter there. Famous lists are located in different cities and countries:

in the St. Nicholas Church (Bobruisk district, Belarus) - made with the blessing of the abbot;
in the All Saints Church in Moscow (Slavyanskaya Square);
in the village Northern (Moscow region);

You can choose any icon, as long as it complies with the canons. The answer to prayers does not depend on the price of the icon; it is solely a matter of diligence and personal faith. The image must be kept clean - wiped from dust, protected from damage.

The icon must be consecrated in the temple. If the image is bought in a church shop or monastery, then this is not necessary (all goods are sanctified before sale). Usually they do not require money for the consecration of objects. In general, donations for any sacraments are voluntary according to the rules of the Russian Orthodox Church. If the icon needs to be transported to another place, it is customary to cover the holy face with paper or linen. This piece of paper is then burned. Of course, the board or paper itself on which the icon is made is not an object of worship, but respect for the prototype must be shown.

Akathist to the Mother of God “Economissa”: instructions

Once a year, on July 18, on the day of remembrance of the holy image of the Mother of God, in the Lavra of St. Athanasius, as well as in other churches and temples, a special prayer to the Mother of God “Economissa” is read. The church service consists of a whole akathist, which in turn includes:

troparion;
kontakion;
ikos;
prayer.

The Akathist is quite voluminous and contains more than 13 subparagraphs, almost each of which also consists of several kontakia or troparia. There is no need to memorize them; it is enough to read from sight during the service or repeat after the clergyman as necessary. After reading the kontakion and troparion, they begin to offer the main prayer, which is recommended to be written down separately if you cannot study it, and always read in moments of need and to find success in any matter.

Prayer text

The full version of the prayer “Economisse” is read once a year on the day of veneration of Athanasius of Athos, since the history of the appearance of the icon and the prayer service of the “Housebuilder” itself is closely connected with the Saint and his Lavra. It is also pronounced in particularly difficult cases in church, when hopes are lost.

Before you begin to pray, you should venerate the image of the Most Holy Mother of God and then say:

“O Most Pure Virgin Mother of God, Most Merciful Lady, supreme Angel and Archangel, Queen of heaven and earth, our Orthodox country, the firm fence of every Christian home and family, the Blesser of those who labor in piety, the blessing of those in need of inexhaustible wealth, the orphans and widows, the Nurse, those who maintain virginity in purity and glory , mothers quiet joy, youths wisdom and teaching, mentors and teachers of perfect intelligence.

We believe in Your sovereign protection over our Orthodox fatherland and over the least of us, redeemed by the Divine Blood of Your Son. We believe, as in this icon of Yours, in the blessing from the Holy Mount Athos given to us, You Yourself send down Your maternal blessing with the city and the weight of ours and every house that has hope in You.

With reverent awe and with a grateful heart, we bow before this new sign of Thy great love, Lady, for us, unworthy. Remembering Your miraculous appearance to the Monk Athanasius of Athos, who was once in need and sorrow and, as the ever-present Steward of his monastery, has received a merciful promise from You, we humbly pray to You: O Most Merciful Mother of the Christian race, be also to us, sinful and unworthy servants of Yours, wise Housebuilder, who organizes our life well.

Keep every community, every home and family in piety and Orthodoxy, like-mindedness, obedience and contentment, guide those who have gone astray on the right path, support old age, educate babies, bring us all to understanding. Relieve and uplift those who are weary, save Your people from all need, illness, famine, destruction, hail, fire, from all evil conditions and all disorder. To this house and to every Christian soul and to our whole country, intercede peace and great mercy now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen".

Another, shorter and simplified version is as follows:

“Mother of God, the Blessed Virgin, helping the suffering and needy, benefactor of the disadvantaged and impoverished. Hear the Servant of God (Servant of God) (name of the person praying) and help. I pray for your blessing before Our Almighty Lord. Beg Him to grant me good housing, prosperity in the house, good luck in business and successful work, so that I can prosper, help others and praise Heaven. I serve by faith and trust in You. Amen".

It is read out on any day of the year in front of the specified face and with lit candles. To quickly attract wealth to the house, the “Economissa” icon is hung opposite the main room. Appearance of the icon

The icon presents the Mother of God, who sits on a throne and holds a baby with her left hand.

On the right stands Saint Michael, who gave his life for the faith. One day, the king’s servants came to the temple where Michael served and said that if he did not destroy all the icons in the temple, he would be sentenced to death. The saint refused to destroy the images of God and chose death, thereby not betraying the Lord.

On the left side stands Saint Athanasius. He was one of those who built the Lavra for the Great Mother. During construction, the Devil interfered and hindered people; with the help of his machinations, he immobilized Athanasius’ assistants, and they could not do anything. Saint Athanasius knelt down and began to pray to the Most Pure One, and the Demon was expelled into the dungeon, and nothing else hindered the construction of the Lavra.

Compositional features of the holy face

An icon is not only a beautiful picture, each image has a symbolic and spiritual meaning. Images of the Mother of God are distinguished by several types, respectively, by their compositional features. The Icon of the Mother of God “Ekonomissa” is a panahranta or the All-Tsarina.

In its composition it is similar to another famous shrine - “Hodegetria”, but has differences in some details. The characteristic signs of panahranta are:

placement on the throne;
Christ is on the left hand of the Mother;
The Mother of God is necessarily dressed in the vestments of the queen.

As for the image itself, it consists of several figures:

Mother of God;
Child Christ;
Saints Athanasius and Michael of Sinad.

The elders were honored to be depicted due to their history: Saint Athanasius directly became an eyewitness to the miracle that the Mother of God performed, this will be written below, and Michael of the Synod became known as the archbishop who opposed iconoclasm and was thrown into prison for his strong convictions, where he later and died. Michael is painted in his archbishop's vestments, holding an open scroll in his left hand, and Athanasius has a small picture of the cathedral, symbolizing the Athos Lavra.

The entire composition emphasizes that “Ekonomissa” is an image not only written on Mount Athos, but also protecting the holy place.

The monks from the mountain always tried to portray the Mother of God exactly as the most worthy of mortals. Several methods are used for this:

Attire: color - rich red, as a symbol of the royal family and, at the same time, a symbol of suffering; The Mother's veil covers her entire body, symbolizing motherhood; A blue dress symbolizing purity; The image of three stars on the vestment are symbols of the immaculate conception, birth and death

Blue is the dominant color in the composition, indicating the importance of the virgin birthright; An image of two angels above Mary's head: kneeling on clouds directly above their heads and holding the Queen's crown; Some copies depict the angels slightly differently: they are positioned behind Mary and raise their hands in prayer while their wings are folded. Their whole appearance speaks of reverence for the Mother of God; The board also clearly shows the throne, several saints and the ongoing construction below - this is the construction of a monastery on Mount Athos, which would not have taken place without the blessing of the Mother of God
