In 958, the ascetic Athanasius began the construction of the Lavra on Holy Mount Athos. In those distant times, there was no complete monastic system, and the hermits lived in poverty. It so happened that the poor harvest led to famine and many of the monks began to leave the monastery lands. Elder Afanasy was left alone. But when his strength began to leave him, he also decided to leave the Holy Mountain.
On the way, the hermit met a woman and was very surprised by this fact, because women were forbidden to appear in these places. The stranger asked the monk where he was going. But the hermit was indignant and asked her a response question about how she got here. But the woman answered with dignity that the monk should behave with more restraint. When Athanasius explained that there was famine in the holy monastery, the woman said that she was the Mother of God and if he returned, there would be enough of everything in the monastery. To prove it, she hit a stone with her staff, which immediately broke and a spring began to flow from it.
The monk wanted to fall at the feet of the Mother of God, but she melted away like fog. Returning, the hermit discovered that all the barns were filled with food. Gradually the monks began to return to Holy Mount Athos, and there was never any famine here again.
From then on, the Most Holy Theotokos began to be considered the economissa or ruler of the monastery on St. Athos, and an icon was painted in honor of this event. This image never left Athos and only copies of it are known throughout the world.

How the Mother of God is depicted on the Economissa icon
The Mother of God in this icon is dressed in royal robes and sits on a throne. There are two angels above her head. With her left hand she holds the Infant God. This image emphasizes the greatness of the Blessed Virgin Mary, focusing on the fact that the Virgin Mary is the most worthy of mortals. This is the most important meaning of this icon.
The composition itself contains other distinctive features by which the Athonite image of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be easily recognized. In front of the throne on which the Lady of Heaven sits are two famous elders - Saint Athanasius and Saint Michael of Sinad. Both great ascetics of the Christian faith lived at approximately the same time.
Their merits are as follows:
- Saint Athanasius was one of the founders of the Lavra on Holy Mount Athos.
- During the time of iconoclasm, Saint Michael spoke out in defense of holy images. He categorically refused to remove the shrines from his temple. For this he was captured and imprisoned, where, unable to withstand the torment, he died.
The images of the Saints on the icon are very symbolic and correspond to the existing biography:
- In the hand of St. Athanasius there is a small image of the cathedral. It personifies the Lavra, which is still active on Holy Athos.

History of the image
The history of the appearance of the prayer image goes back to the 10th century. The face of the Mother of God appeared to Athanasius. The elder lived in the monastery, which was visited by famine and the rest of the monks left the refuge, but Athanasius decided to stay. He, as the founder, held on until the last and did not want to leave. But time passed, hunger became unbearable, and the elder decided to go in search of food.
While going down the mountain, he met a woman. According to the laws of Mount Athos, women do not have the right to come to the holy place, so Athanasius was very surprised. The stranger asked where the elder was going, but the elder became indignant, saying that women had no place here. The Mother of God indicated that Athanasius should be more respectful and modest in communicating with her.
The elder explained the situation: severe hunger forced the monks to leave their place of residence. To which the woman replied that now no one here on the mountain will need food, because the monks will always have it. To the question: “Who are you?”, the woman answered: “Mother of God.”
Afanasy doubted her words and asked if this was really a prophetic dream. The virgin asked to hit a large stone with her staff while she was awake. The monk complied with her request and a holy spring gushed out of the ground in this place. The water became healing and people began to come to the source.

On the same day, Afanasy went down to the cellars of the monastery and saw that they were completely filled with food. The monks returned and began to pray intensely to the Mother of God, who delivered them from needs and deprivations. Even after many years, the monastery lived in complete contentment, and the inhabitants of the monastery, in gratitude, painted an icon of the Mother of God, which became original.
The story of the Virgin took place on Mount Athos. Previously, it was believed that monks lived and worked on it, painting images of saints from the Holy Spirit. The mountain still exists. The icon is one of five icons currently in use. It is the most potent.
Saint Athanasius was tested in life twice. The first time God tested him was with hunger. Athanasius also received a second proof of the existence of the Heavenly Maiden and that she takes care of his monastery. However, suddenly someone utters a terrible word - “crisis”. And you can no longer be sure that tonight bread and milk will not cost twice as much as yesterday, that the salary received will be enough for the most necessary things, and indeed that in general - it will be received on time, this salary. And the worst thing is that there is no guarantee that tomorrow morning there will be somewhere to go to work.
Sharp price hikes, depreciation of bank deposits, widespread layoffs and the inability to find a job that would help keep the “home economy” afloat - all these are constant companions of the situation, which is briefly called “crisis”.
Everything that seemed stable and guaranteed yesterday no longer seems so today. And even if prices have so far risen slightly, and wages have been delayed by only three days, and even if they haven’t been fired from work yet, anxiety still settles in everyone’s soul - this didn’t happen today, but what will happen tomorrow?

And, of course, those who suffer the most are those who are commonly called the “middle class” - ordinary people, like you and me, living from paycheck to paycheck, from time to time trying to save something “for a rainy day.” Young families, parents with many children, pensioners are also under attack... Those who can rely only on themselves, those who are responsible for elderly parents and small children, those for whom stable work is so important and whose entire well-being rests on timely issued wages.
And it’s not far from despair - because it seems that our life is slowly but surely moving towards the edge of the abyss and that no one can help stop this movement. Fear, anxiety for their future and the future of their children, melancholy and despondency settle in the souls of people.
However, there is a way out of this situation. There is a way out for those who always remember what is looking at us from heaven

From time immemorial, the Mother of God was revered in Rus' as the patron saint of the Russian land. After all, Orthodox Rus' is one of the chosen destinies of the Mother of God, and the Russian people are chosen by her.
