The rite of reading the 12 psalms
The rite, as befits the singing of twelve psalms individually, which the venerable desert fathers sang during the days and nights, is also remembered in the books of the fathers and in the lives and torments of many saints.
Reverend Dosifei, Archimandrite of Kiev-Pechersk, brought this rite from the holy mountain.
As usual, we start with the verb:
For the prayers of the saints, our father, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, amen. (bow)
Shielding our face, we read:
Heavenly King, Comforter, True Soul, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, the treasure of good things and the Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save us, O Blessed One, our soul.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (three times with bows)
.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Saints, visit and heal our infirmities; for Thy name's sake.
Lord have mercy. (three times)
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven; Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done as it is in heaven and on earth; Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us.
Amen.
Lord have mercy, 12
.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, amen.
Come, let us worship our God the King (bow)
.
Come, let us worship Christ, the King and our God (bow)
.
Come, let us bow and fall before the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the King and our God (bow)
.
Psalm 26/>
The Lord is my enlightenment and my Savior, whom shall I slaughter? The Lord is the Protector of my life, from whom will I be afraid? Sometimes approach me angrily, tear away my flesh that offends me, and smite my enemies, you become exhausted and fall. Even if a regiment takes up arms against me, my heart will not fear, even if it rises up to fight me, I will trust in Nan. I have asked one thing from the Lord, and this I will require: that I may live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, that I may behold the beauty of the Lord, and that I may attend His holy church. For you hid me in Your blood in the day of my evil, covering me in the mystery of Your blood. Thou hast lifted me up upon a stone, and now, behold, Thou hast lifted up my head against my enemies; I have died and devoured in His blood a sacrifice of praise and shouting; I will sing and make praise to the Lord. Hear, O Lord, my voice, to them I cried, have mercy on me and hear me. My heart says to you: I will seek the Lord. I will seek Your face, O Lord, I will seek Your face. Do not turn Your face away from me and do not turn aside in anger from Your servant, be my helper, do not reject me, and do not forsake me, O God of my Savior. For my father and mother have abandoned me, but the Lord will receive me. Give me the law, O Lord, in Thy way and guide me on the right path, for my enemy’s sake. Do not betray me to those who suffer from cold in their souls, for you have risen up against me as witnesses of unrighteousness, and lie untruthfully to yourself. I believe in seeing the good of the Lord on the land of the living. Be patient with the Lord, be of good courage, and let your heart be strong, and be patient with the Lord.
Psalm 31/>
Blessed, with whom iniquities were forgiven, and with whom sins were covered. Blessed is the man; the Lord will not impute sin to him; there is flattery in his mouth. As if I were silent, my bones swore, I called to me all day. As Thy hand weighs upon me day and night, I return to passion when the thorn strikes me. I knew my iniquity and did not cover my sin, I said: let me confess my iniquity to the Lord, and You have forgiven the wickedness of my heart. For this reason, every saint will pray to You at the right time, even though in the flood there are many waters that will not come close to him. You are my refuge, you who have taken me from sorrow, my joy, deliver me from those who have bypassed me. I will admonish you and guide you on this path, but if you go away, I will fix My eyes on you. Do not wake up, like a horse that has no reason, with the bridle and bridle of its jaws, those who do not approach you. The sinner has many wounds, but he who trusts in the Lord will receive mercy. Rejoice in the Lord, and rejoice, you righteous, and rejoice, all you who are upright in heart.
Psalm 56/>
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for my soul trusts in You. And I hope in the shadow of Your wing, until lawlessness passes away. I will cry to God Most High, God who has done good to me. Sent from Heaven and saved me, and gave them reproach to those who trampled on me. God sent His mercy and His truth, and took my soul away from the environment of the tabernacle, my sleep was disturbed. Sons of humanity, their teeth are weapons and arrows, and their tongue is a sharp sword. Ascend into Heaven, O God, and Thy glory be throughout all the earth. You have prepared a net for my feet and humbled my soul. I dug a hole in front of my face and fell into the nude. My heart is ready, O God, my heart is ready, I will sing and sing in my glory. Arise, my glory, arise to the psalter and harp, I will arise early. Let us confess to You among the people, O Lord, I sing to You among the nations. For Thy mercy has been magnified to the heavens, and even to the clouds Thy truth. Ascend into Heaven, O God, and Thy glory be throughout all the earth.

I have striven to open the Father's embrace, having lived out my life fornication, but I look upon the unlivable riches of Thy bounties, O Savior: do not despise my impoverished heart now. For you, Lord, I call with tenderness: those who have sinned, Father, go to heaven and before You.
Glory:
When You come, O God, to judge the earth with glory, and everyone trembles, and a river of fire flows before the judgment, the books are unbent, and the secret is exposed, then deliver me from the unquenchable fire, and make me worthy to sit at Your right hand, O righteous Judge.
And now:
Mother of God, we pray to all the Virgins; We take refuge in Thy bounty, love and Thy grace; For you are the imams of sinners, salvation, and for you, the all-immaculate One, the accomplice in adversity.
Therefore:

Psalm 33/>
I will bless the Lord at all times; I will make His praise in my mouth. My soul will glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Seek the Lord and hear me, and deliver me from all my sorrows. Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed. This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his sorrows. The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. Fear the Lord, all your saints, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. Those who are poor and hungry are rich, but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. Come, children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is a person who loves life and sees good things? Keep your tongue from evil, and keep your lips from speaking flattery. Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace, and get married, etc. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are upon their prayer. The face of the Lord, against those who do evil, will consume their memory from the earth. You have exalted the righteous, and the Lord has heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows. The Lord is near to those who are broken in heart, and will save those who are humble in spirit. Many are the sorrows of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver me from all of them. The Lord protects all their bones; not one of them will be broken. The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. The Lord will deliver the soul of His servant, and all who trust in Nan will not sin.
Psalm 38/>
Reh: I will keep my ways, so that I will not sin with my tongue: I have laid it with my mouth, so that the sinner will never arise before me. I became mute and humbled, and kept silent from good things, and my illness was renewed. My heart will warm within me, and a fire will flare up in my teaching. Verbs with my tongue: tell me, Lord, my death and the number of my days, which is, yes, I mean, what am I deprived of? Behold, Thou hast measured my days, and my composition is as if it were nothing before Thee; Otherwise, all kinds of vanity, every person is alive. No matter how a person walks, he is always in vain: he treasures, and I don’t know for whom I am collecting. And now who is my patience, is it not the Lord? and my composition is from You. Deliver me from all my iniquities; you have given me reproach to the fool. I was speechless and did not open my mouth as You had done. Leave Thy wounds far from me; I have disappeared from the strength of Thy hand. In reproof of iniquity you showed man, and you melted away his soul like a spider; anyway, every person is in vain. Hear my prayer, Lord, and inspire my prayer; Do not keep silent about my tears, for I am a stranger from You and a stranger, like all my fathers. Let me go, let me go, I won’t even leave before, and I won’t do that.
Psalm 40/>
Blessed is the understanding of the poor and wretched; in the day of cruelty the Lord will deliver. The Lord will preserve and live and make him happy on earth, and will not deliver him into the hands of his enemies. The Lord will help him on his sickbed; You turned his entire bed into his illness. Az reh: Lord, have mercy on me, heal my soul, like those who have sinned. Smite my evil decision: when will his name die and perish? And when you come in you see; saying in vain: his heart has gathered up iniquity unto him; they went out and spoke together. All my enemies whisper against me, all my evil thoughts are against me. If you lay the word of crime on me, food and sleep will not cause you to rise again. For the man of my peace, who trusteth, my edible bread, magnify the heel upon me. But You, Lord, have mercy on me and raise me up and repay them. Of this knowledge, as I desired; for my enemy will not rejoice over me. You accepted me for my kindness, and you established me before You forever. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting, he will be, he will be.

Lord, visit my humble soul, for I have lived out all my life in sins. But accept me as a harlot and save me.
Glory:
The Lord has spent all my life in fornication, with the accursed harlots; as I call to the prodigals with tenderness: Heavenly Father, cleanse those who have sinned, and accept me, and do not cast me away from You, having withdrawn from You, and now become impoverished through unfruitful deeds.
And now:
We now diligently approach the Mother of God as a father of sins, falling down with humility and repentance, crying out from the depths of our souls: Lady, help us, having mercy on us, struggling as we bend from many sins, do not turn away your servants’ weakness, for You are the only helper of the imam.

Psalm 69/>
God, stink for my help, Lord, strive for my help. Let those who seek my soul be ashamed and put to shame. Let them turn back and be ashamed who want evil against us. Let the abies return, ashamed, and say: It’s good, it’s good. Let all who seek You, God, rejoice and be glad in You, and let them say without saying: May the Lord be magnified who love Your salvation. But I am poor and wretched, God, help me. Thou art my Helper and my Savior, O Lord, do not become stubborn.
Psalm 70/>
In Thee, O Lord, have I trusted, that I may never be ashamed. By Thy righteousness redeem me and deliver me. Incline Your ear to me and save me. May God be my Protector and a place to save me firmly, for You are my strength and my refuge. My God, take me from the hand of the sinner, from the hand of the lawbreaker and the offender. For You are my patience, O Lord, Lord, my hope from my youth. Established in You from the womb, from the womb of my mother, You are my Patron. I will sing about You, as if it were a miracle for many, and You are my strong helper. Let my lips be filled with praise, for I will sing of Your glory, Your splendor all day long. Do not open me in my old age, when my strength disappears, do not leave me. As if they had decided to defeat me, and those who were seeking my soul conferred together. Verb: God left him to eat, you will marry and have him, as if there is no deliverance. My God, do not depart from me, my God, come to my help. May those who slander my soul be ashamed and disappear, may those who seek evil against me be clothed with shame and shame. I always trust in You and apply Your praise to all. My mouth will proclaim Your righteousness, Your salvation all day long. Because I have not learned the book, I will look into the power of the Lord, O Lord, I will remember Your righteousness alone. My God, you have taught me from my youth, and to this day I will proclaim your wonders. And even to old age and maturity, my God, do not forsake me, until I will proclaim Your arm to all the future generations. Thy power and Thy righteousness, O God, even unto the highest, which Thou hast made for me greatness. God, who is like You? Eliki showed me many and evil sorrows, and you revived me, and raised me from the depths of the earth. Thou hast multiplied Thy majesty upon me, and thou hast comforted me, and brought me back from the depths of the earth. For I will confess to You among the people, O Lord, in the vessels of psalms, I will sing Your truth, O God, to You on the harp, O Holy One of Israel. My lips rejoice when I sing to You, and my soul, even though You have delivered. Also, my tongue will learn Your righteousness all day long, when those who seek evil against me will be ashamed and disgraced.
Psalm 76/>
With my voice I cried to the Lord, with my voice to God, and I heard. In the day of my sorrow I sought God, with my hands I lay before Him, and I was not deceived. My soul refused to be comforted, I remembered God and rejoiced, but my spirit was grieved and overcome. My eyes anticipated the guards, they were troubled and speechless. I thought about the first days, and remembered the eternal summer, and learned. At night my heart was mocked, and my spirit was saddened. Will the Lord reject food forever, and will not show favor again? Or will He cut off His mercy to the end, ending the verb from generation to generation? Will God forget to be generous with food? Or will He withhold His bounties in His anger? And rekh: now I have begun, this is the betrayal of the right hand of the Most High. I will remember the works of the Lord, as I will remember Your wonders from the beginning. And I will learn from all Your works, and I will mock at Your undertakings. God, your way is holy; Who is the great God like our God? You are God and work miracles. Thou hast known Thy power among men, and with Thy arm Thou hast delivered Thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. You saw the water, O God, you saw the water, and you were afraid; the abyss was confused by the multitude of noise of the waters. The voice of the clouds, for Your arrows pass away, the voice of Your thunder in the wheels. Your lightning illuminated the universe, the earth moved and trembled. Thy ways are in the sea, and Thy paths are in many waters, and Thy steps are not known. Thou hast taught Thy people like sheep, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Psalm 101 />
Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to You. Do not turn Your face away from me, even on this day I grieve. Incline Your ear to me, on that day if I call on You, you will soon hear me. As if my days had disappeared, like smoke, and my bones had dried up. I was wounded like grass, and my heart was gone, as if I had forgotten to bear my bread. Because of the voice of my groaning my bone cleaves to my flesh. We became like the desert owl, like a nighttime corvid on its dive. Forget and be like a special bird here. All day long I have been reproached by you, and those who praise me are cursed by me. Ashes are gone, like bread is eaten, and my drink is dissolved with tears. From the presence of Thy anger and Thy wrath: for He has exalted me above me. My days have turned away like the shade, and I have dried up like hay. But You, Lord, remain forever, and Your memory endures forever. You have risen, having shown mercy to Zion, for the time has come to show mercy to it, for the time has come. For Thy servants will take pleasure in his stone, and his dust will blight him. And the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth shall fear thy glory. For the Lord of Zion will build and appear in His glory. Look at the prayer of the poor, and do not despise their prayers. May this be written for generations, and the people of the land will praise the Lord. As the Lord looked down from His holy height, the Lord looked down from Heaven to earth. Hear the sighs of the chained, release the sons of the slain. Proclaim the name of the Lord in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem. Sometimes people will gather together, and kings will work for the Lord. Answering him on the way of his strength, bring forth the humiliation of my days. Do not bring me to the end of my days, to Your generation and generation. In the beginning You are the Lord, the foundation of the earth, and the works of Your hands are the heavens. They will perish, but You remain; and they will all promise like a robe, and like their garments, and they will be changed. You are also, and your years will not become scarce. The sons of Your servants will dwell, and their seed will be corrected forever.
Prayer of Manasseh, King of Judah/>
Lord Almighty, God of our fathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and their righteous seed. You created the heavens and the earth with all their beauty, and the humming seas with the word of Your command. Having closed the abyss and sealed it with Your terrible and glorious name, everyone fears Him and trembles at the face of Your glory. For the splendor of Thy glory is fickle, and we cannot endure the wrath of Thy rebuke against sinners. Countless and unexplored is the mercy of Your promise. For you are the Lord on high, merciful, long-suffering and abundantly merciful, and repentant of the evils of men. But You, Lord, according to the multitude of Your goodness, have promised repentance and forgiveness to those who have sinned towards You, and by the multitude of Your mercies you have called repentance for the sinner to salvation. Thou, Lord God of the righteous, brought repentance to Thy righteous ones, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, who did not sin before Thee, but Thou didst ordain repentance for me, a sinner, for those who have sinned more than the sand of the sea. My iniquities, O Lord, have multiplied, and I am not worthy to look up and see the heights of heaven; because of my many iniquities I am bound with many iron bands. Because I cannot lift up my head, and I cannot lift up my praise. I have angered Your wrath, and I have done evil before You. And I did not do Your will, I did not keep Your commandments. And now I bow to the knees of my heart, and I pray for goodness from You. I have sinned, Lord, I have sinned, and my iniquities are mine. But I ask and pray to You: God bless me, bless me, and do not destroy me with my iniquities. Below in the age of enmity, keep my evils, and do not condemn me in the depths of the earth. Thou art God, the God of the repentant, and show all Thy goodness to me, as I am unworthy of being, save me, according to Thy mercy. And I will always praise You, all the days of my life. For all the powers of heaven sing to You, and Yours is the glory forever, amen.

Lord, Your mercy endures forever, and do not despise the work of Your hand. Praise is due to You, singing is due to You, glory is due to You, Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages, Amen.

And now, Master, may Thy hand cover me, and may Thy mercy come upon me, as my soul is troubled and painful in its journey from my cursed and stinking body. Yes, the council will kill the once wicked adversary, and will repent in the darkness, for the unknown and known sins of my life. Be merciful to me, Master, and may my soul not see the dark gaze of wicked demons, but may Your bright and most luminous angels receive me. Give glory to Your holy name, and by Your power lead me to Your divine judgment. I will never be judged, so that the hand of the prince of this world will not accept me, so that I may be cast out as a sinner into the depths of hell. But appear and be my Savior and Intercessor. THE TWELVE PSALM CHINESE
The oldest manuscript describing a series of 12 night and 12 day psalms is the Alexandrian Codex of the Bible of the 5th century. (Fol. 532v); numbers (there may be errors in their readings) of the daily psalms here: 8, 29, 1, 41, 50, 6, 69, 4, 111, 140, 105, 120; night: 74, 29, 54, 6, 4, 40, 51, 80, 86, 95, 21, 56; 3 psalms are also indicated here for the morning and evening services, i.e., brief instructions are given on the composition of the entire Book of Hours. The next most recent evidence of this Book of Hours is a papyrus fragment from the 2nd half. VI century P. Naqlun inv. 72/8 (see: Derda. 1995. P. 89-90), containing only the numbers of 12 daily psalms (basically the same as those indicated in the Alexandrian Codex, except for the psalms for the 8th-11th hours). It can be assumed (see: Frøyshov. 2003. P. 555) that the Egypt described in these monuments. The origin of the circle of 24 daily services goes back to Egyptian practice. monasticism of the 4th century and corresponds to the “Rule of the Angel” described by Bishop. Elenopolis Palladium (Lavsaic. Ch. 32) and etc. John Cassian the Roman (De inst. coenob. II 4-6; III 2), where each hour consisted of a psalm and prayer.
The ancient series of 24 daily psalms is written out as an appendix in some manuscripts of the Psalter (see: Diakovsky. 1913. P. 176; Parpulov. 2004. P. 22-23. App. C5). In some manuscripts, the series is combined with a system of daily services according to the Palestinian Book of Hours - for example, in the Sinait Book of Hours. gr. 864, 9th century, a series of 12 night psalms are separated into a separate service, following the 9th hour and marked with a special sign, and a series of 12 daytime psalms (preserved in fragments in the manuscript) are combined with the sequences of the Palestinian Book of Hours (see: Diakovsky 1913, pp. 176-177). The similarity in the choice of psalms indicates that the same system of 24 psalms was probably used in the compilation of the complex cycle of daily services given in the famous cargo. manuscripts of the 10th century Sinait. Iber. 34 (see about it in article Georgian Orthodox Church, section “Divine service of the Georgian Orthodox Church”) (the corresponding fragment is now in St. Petersburg: RNL. Sir. 16/1. Fol. 19) and based on Palestinian practice, presumably older than 7th century (see: Frøyshov. 2003. P. 561-562).
A comparison of the sources' indications about the ancient series of 12 night psalms allows us to identify 2 editions of the ancient series of psalms - α and β. Revision α except Codex Alexandria and papyrus P. Naqlun inv. 72/8 contain manuscripts (probably others exist): State Historical Museum. Khlud. 129d (see Khludovskaya Psalter), approx. 850-875 (Fol. 159-159v; see: Corrigan. 1992. P. 129), Sinait. gr. 864, 9th century (see: Maxime (Leila) Ajjoub. 2002. P. 174-179), Sinait. Iber. 34 and Athen. Bibl. Nat. 7, X century (see: Θουντούλης. 1963. Σ. 127-130), Kekel. A-38, beginning XI century (see: შანიმე. 1960. P. 470). The 1st, 4th to 6th and 12th of the daily psalms in the manuscripts of edition α are the same, but others in the sources may differ (in comparison with the Alexandrian Codex: as the psalm of the 2nd hour 26 may be indicated; 3rd - 30; 7th - 65 or 16; 8th - 83, 84 or 81; 9th - 114; 10th - 150, 110 or 112; 11th - 110 or 101). In the choice of night psalms, the manuscripts of edition α are consistent with each other (except for the 10th hour), not counting the Alexandrian Codex (but discrepancies in the readings of the psalms between it and other manuscripts may be the result of scribe errors or inaccuracies in the readings; minor discrepancies also contain the Chludov Psalter and Athen . Bibl. Nat. 7) and indicate the following psalms: 74, 29, 54, 5, 7, 40, 31, 80 (Chludov Psalter: 8, the same psalm is probably indicated in Athen. Bibl. Nat. 7), 81, 95 (or 92, or 93, 99), 104, 56 (Athen. Bibl. Nat. 7: 55).
The β edition of the ancient series of 24 psalms is contained in the Book of Hours of Paris. gr. 331, XI century (see: Θουντούλης. 1963. Σ. 127-130), Leimonos. 295, XII century. (see: Θουντούλης. 1963. Σ. 127-130; here for most daytime hours it is indicated not one, but several psalms), Sinait. gr. 868, XII-XIV centuries. (see: Diakovsky. 1913. P. 178). The choice of daytime psalms in the monuments of the β edition, with some discrepancies, coincides with their choice in the monuments of the α edition (only the psalms of the 5th and 12th daytime hours are fundamentally different - in the β edition these are psalms 39 and 111, respectively). The choice of night psalms in the known manuscripts of the β edition is the same; Compared to edition α, different psalms are indicated here for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th and 11th hours of the night: 26, 55, 101, 91, 6, 95 (or 97), respectively. In modern The ancient series of psalms (neither in the α or β edition) are not found in liturgical books.
