Gaining excess weight is quite easy. It happens that this is due to disturbances in the functioning of the body. And then serious treatment is required. But more often, excess weight is the result of poor nutrition. Diets and fasting rarely bring positive results: obese people who have been gaining extra pounds for years want to get immediate results. And if this does not happen, they sit down in front of the refrigerator again, forgetting about the desire to lose weight. Out of desperation, some turn to strong prayers for weight loss.
How to lose weight
In the modern world, it has become considered natural to want to eat deliciously and a lot, go to a restaurant or cafe, or eat fast food (fast food). For many people, culinary abundance has proven dangerous. Excess food, which is not always healthy and natural, leads to metabolic disorders and negative changes in the figure. Modern medicine offers various ways to lose weight, including drug treatment and gymnastics. A whole fitness industry, a “healthy lifestyle”, has emerged, in which huge amounts of money are circulating. However, even with modern means, the problem of excess weight remains unsolvable for many. When medicine is powerless, some strive to find a way out of the situation through prayer. But is there a special prayer for weight loss in Orthodoxy?

Prayer for weight loss
It all starts with a correct understanding of the meaning of prayer. For Christians, this is a way of communicating with the Creator himself, with the Most Holy Theotokos and the holy saints of God. You cannot treat prayer as a magic spell, after reading which, as if by the wave of a magic wand, the desired figure is instantly acquired.
Magic and prayer are two opposing practices. By turning to the Eternal Mystery with the help of spells, a person tries to force It to perform a specific action. And the believer tries to talk to Her. If you try to manipulate the supernatural, then unclean spirits will come to your “help.” This will result in an even more terrible loss. With magic spells and rituals, a person tries to put pressure and manipulate where one can only love and trust. Strong prayer for weight loss can only be in demand in the pagan world, which has not known the true Almighty God.
“By its nature, prayer should bring a person closer to God. What does it mean? God is Holy. Accordingly, approaching God is also approaching holiness. The fruit of real, correct prayer will be expressed in the appearance of two things. The first is the desire to obey God, that is, obedience. The second is humility, that is, an understanding of one’s powerlessness in the matter of salvation, and an urgent need for God’s help in all other matters. Humility is not self-abasement, not the pleasure of always feeling guilty about everything. This is aspiration from oneself to God and surrendering oneself into the hands of God so that He comes and begins to manage your life as He sees fit” (Archpriest Pavel Velikanov).

Passion of Gluttony
It would seem that what’s wrong with eating delicious food? Food is God's gift. By saturating the body with nutrients and enjoying it, people give thanks to the Creator. Moreover, during a meal or feast there is time to chat with loved ones and friends. In the current conditions of the frantic pace of life, when everyone is in a hurry and no one has time, this is very important. By refreshing yourself physically, you can also gain joy from communication. The Holy Fathers called a joint meal a continuation of the Liturgy. It was common for the first Christians to organize so-called love suppers after the Eucharist. While eating food and wine at the common table, fellow believers held spiritual conversations.
However, there is also the other side of the coin - real addiction to food. This is not natural hunger, not food for the sake of health and strength. A real passion is formed when it is impossible to live a day without delicious food or a large amount of it. Such dependence in Christianity is called the passion of gluttony.
But how to find that fine line separating natural need from passion? The Church teaches that this line separates inner freedom from unfreedom in the human soul. The Apostle Paul said:
“I know how to live in poverty, and I know how to live in abundance; I learned everything and in everything, to be satisfied and to endure hunger, to be both in abundance and in shortage. I can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:12–13).
Sin is hidden not in food and drinks, but in personal attitude towards them. And like any other sin, gluttony deprives a person of heavenly bliss.
“Just as fat birds cannot fly high, so those who please the flesh cannot ascend to Heaven” (Reverend John Climacus, 6-7 century).
Gluttony in the modern world
In modern life it is easy to fall under the power of gluttony. It would seem that what’s wrong with being addicted to fast food, watching countless culinary TV shows, and photographing food on social networks. But these are all manifestations of passion.
“A Christian living in the world experiences various temptations from this passion. In the modern world, the cult of gluttony reigns... The addiction to refined food is deliberately and forcibly incited, and laryngeal rage is formed from childhood. The post is ridiculed and its meaning is distorted. Instead of fasting, the idea of dieting, fasting, and vegetarianism is being propagated.
All this becomes the norm of life. People are turned into chewing and constantly eating animals, as if going to the slaughter. It’s as if everyone is being fed at every turn... You know, just like a chicken is fattened before slaughter, so are people. And it is clear that a person only cares about how to eat deliciously and a lot, how to earn as much as possible in order to eat tasty, then relax and go to work in order to eat tasty again” (Archpriest Sergius Filimonov).
Powerful doll ritual for quick weight loss
Rapid weight loss is guaranteed by a ritual with a doll performed on the night of the waning moon. She is sculpted from wax (hard dough, clay, plasticine) with forms of obvious obesity and given her name. Before the wax hardens, you should start reading the plot.
This must be done in such a way that you have time to tear off pieces of wax from the stomach, sides, thighs and buttocks. When performing a magical ritual, you should imagine how the body becomes slim and beautiful.
At the end of the ritual, everything torn off must be burned. The doll must be hidden and not shown to anyone. You shouldn’t tell anyone that such a ritual was even carried out. Magicians recommend forgetting about the manipulation and simply enjoying the result.
Consequences for the human body and soul
You can learn about the consequences of excessive food consumption on human health from nutritionists. They warn that overeating can lead to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastritis and many others.
If we talk about the consequences of excessive consumption of food for the soul of a Christian, then gluttony also has a destructive spiritual effect.
In the Mount Athos monastery of Dochiar (Greece) there is an image of a terrible plot: a fierce serpent swallows a monk. It serves as a reminder not only to the brethren of the monastery, but also to all believers, of the consequences of the sin of gluttony. Once upon a time there lived a monk in a monastery who secretly kept food in his cell and ate it at night. One day, other monks entered his cell and saw how a certain huge snake crawled out from under the bed and swallowed the monk before their eyes.
Gluttony is a violation of the second commandment: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image... thou shalt not bow down to them, nor serve them.” According to Saint Philaret of Moscow (1782-1867)
“Gluttony relates to idolatry because gluttons place sensual pleasure above all else, and therefore, the apostle says, that they have “God’s belly,” or, in other words, their belly is their idol (Epistle of the Apostle Paul to the Philippians, 3:19)” .
Prayer for weight loss: Orthodox analogue
In Orthodoxy there is no special prayer to lose weight. Believers ask the Lord not for a slender figure, but for strength to fight the passion of gluttony. How exactly to fight sins is a complex question. There are no universal answers for everyone at once. Therefore, it is better to seek advice from a confessor or priest of an Orthodox church. You can try to find recommendations in the works of the Holy Fathers. They indicate fasting and abstinence from food. However, you need to remember: these are recommendations from monks who lived at least 1000 years ago. You shouldn’t follow them literally; you need advice from an experienced person.
At the same time, we must not forget or reject the help of medical specialists. Prayer for weight loss is not a panacea for excess weight. Food addiction has become so widespread that it requires the knowledge and efforts of specialists. A therapist, nutritionist, cardiologist, and even a psychiatrist can all help combat the effects of gluttony. Anyone can get caught in the web of passion and it is impossible to cope on their own. But what is beyond the power of man is within the power of God. Therefore, “prayer for weight loss” for the Orthodox is a prayer to the Lord, the Mother of God and the saints for deliverance from the passion of gluttony.
Participation in the Sacraments of Confession and Communion is of decisive importance. It is in union with Christ that a person receives grace and strength to fight for his soul and body.
“The most important and most necessary prayer of a Christian is the Eucharistic (that is, the central and most important part of the Liturgy, during which the sacrament of the Divine Eucharist is performed). This is not asking God for good for yourself and your loved ones. This is participation in the formation of the Kingdom of God here and now - which is what happens when we serve the Liturgy, when we receive communion, when we become able to contain the fire of the Divine and carry it to the world around us. A person who loves and understands the service will not search for or invent new prayers to satisfy any specific request. Everything that a person can ask God for—and even more—is in our services” (Archpriest Pavel Velikanov).
Which saint should you pray to to lose weight and not gain weight?
Most prayers for weight loss are addressed to God, but it is permissible to turn to both the One Creator and the saints for help. Nicholas the Wonderworker, who can save a person in the most difficult life situations, will definitely answer your request. You need to communicate with him, as with other intercessors before the Almighty, with a lighted candle purchased in a shop at the church.
Lord
The Almighty is merciful, so he is ready to lend a helping hand even to those who have repeated the sin more than once. The main thing is to sincerely repent of it and strive for spiritual purity, which can only exist in conditions of constant struggle with temptations. For people suffering from excess weight, the main temptation is food. A person will no longer be drawn to it if he begins to change through faith, prayer addressed to the Lord.
Holy Mother of God
The Most Holy Theotokos is considered the protector of the fairer sex and children, but she is ready to help any Christian who does not have the patience to cope with gluttony on his own. The Virgin Mary answers sincere prayers, fills the one who says them with the strength necessary to fully understand the problem and to fight it.
The effectiveness of this method of losing weight is impressive. The believer manages to eradicate his unhealthy addiction to eating foods without measure, that is, to eradicate the evil that causes damage at the physical as well as moral level. You need to read the prayer regularly.
Matrona of Moscow
A very powerful prayer for weight loss is the prayer book to the Great Martyr Matrona of Moscow. It should be read daily. At first glance, it may seem that the words of the prayer are complex, unusual for the modern Russian language. It's not scary. The Higher Powers will hear the requests of those praying in modern language, you can speak like this, the main thing is that all requests come from the heart. Moreover, a prayer service is not a conspiracy or magic. There is nothing mystical about this. Such appeals are considered a form of conversation with the Supreme Mind, the saints. You are allowed to pronounce them in your own words.
Mother Matrona herself bequeathed that after death people would turn to her with their problems, she promised to help all those suffering. And nowadays people turn to Matrona for help. There is a continuous stream of pilgrims in the Moscow monastery where the relics are located. Thanks to prayers, people are healed, not only in body, but also in soul.
The text of the prayer service to Matrona of Moscow sounds like this:
O Great Mother Matrona! Hear, accept us now, sinners, asking you. Matrona of Moscow, during your lifetime you were accustomed to accepting and listening to all those who suffer. Thanks to your ambulance, healing took place. May your mercy not dry up even after worldly life. Help the unworthy in this vain world. Help to heal the servant of God (his name) mentally and physically. Heal from various diseases, deliver from all kinds of temptations (gluttony), deliver from the great temptation of the devil's powers. Help me carry my Cross with dignity and cope with any hardships of fate. Don't let me lose the Lord in my heart. Give me the strength to love people like you without hypocrisy. Help us after death to reach the Kingdom of Heaven with others who have pleased God. We glorify the Lord, in the Holy Trinity, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. In all ages. Amen!
There are times when there is no time to read a prayer service in the evening, then you can turn to the Great Matrona of Moscow both during the daytime and in the morning. Even in those moments when you are traveling in public transport, or taking a walk in the park.
Irinarch of Rostov
The most powerful prayer in the fight against obesity is the prayer read to Irinarch of Rostov.
It must be pronounced as follows:
- You need to go to church (in the morning or afternoon), buy a red candle in the church shop.
- Place a candle near the icon and say:
“Great Irinarh, great miracle worker, I ask for your help. Accept the sinful slave, help her in difficult times, do not leave her in trouble. Deliver (name) from obesity, gluttony and obesity. Keep your body healthy and your mind clear. Amen".
- After this, you need to take holy water from the temple and go home. Along the way, you can’t talk to anyone or turn back.
- At home, you need to take a bath with the addition of holy water brought from the church.
- For the rest of the day, you are allowed to drink only water, and it is recommended to go to bed before 12 am. The next day, before eating, you need to read the “Our Father” prayer.
For the ritual to work, you should pray to Irinarch 3 times a week.
Nicholas the Wonderworker
A prayer said to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Lord God, Jesus Christ, helps you lose weight:
- At night, in silence and solitude, you need to light 3 church candles purchased the day before.
- Before reading the plot, it is recommended to sit in silence for 10-15 minutes. At this time, you can imagine the end result - a healthy and beautiful body.
- Candles and icons must be placed on a flat surface and said three times:
“Gracious Patron Nicholas, who protects us from heaven, help us lose weight so that the body does not become fat and the back does not hurt from the weight. Give me strength to fight excess weight. I turn to you for physical weight loss, for heavenly protection. Jesus Christ, help me, reduce my evil appetite, and guide me on the true path. Thy will be done. Amen".
- Then you need to wait until the candles burn out and bury the wax remains under a massive tree that grows near the church.
Ephraim the Syrian
Before reading this plot, it is recommended to keep a strict fast for a week: do not eat meat, fish and dairy products, as well as alcoholic beverages.
Ephraim the Syrian's prayer for weight loss looks like this:
“Saint Ephraim, help us defeat the spirit of idleness and gluttony. Help cultivate the spirit of chastity and patience. Let the thoughts and desires of demons leave this mind, grace will descend on the servant of God (name of the performer of the ceremony). The Lord will help her in this difficult struggle and give her strength and will. Let it be so. Amen".
The prayer must be said 12 times during Lent (except Saturdays and Sundays), as well as on Wednesdays and Fridays. This can be done both at home and in church. All words must be read slowly, in a half-whisper and without hesitation.
To make the result appear faster, it is recommended to go to church every day for the morning service, and on the way give alms to those in need.
