Akathist and Prayers to the Holy Blessed Matrona of Moscow

One of the most beloved saints of our land is Matrona of Moscow. She lived in Moscow in the last century and is considered the patroness of the capital. The Lord glorified the saint through many miracles performed by her. Matrona was blind since childhood, but God gave her spiritual vision. She saw what others could not see. With her prayer, the saint helped people in troubles and illnesses. And after her death, Matrona helps those who call on her with all their hearts.

Many miracles occur to this day from her holy relics, which rest in the Moscow Intercession Convent.

Holy Troparion

After the canonization of the saint, hymns glorifying her were written:

  • Akathist;
  • prayers;
  • troparion;
  • kontakion;
  • glorification.

These chants are used during worship services, and are also used separately from services in private. Worship is a public church event . On it, troparia and kontakia are sung and read repeatedly to the Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the saints. But sometimes troparia, kontakia, magnifications, and prayers are used by parishioners and at home for private prayer.

A troparion is the glorification of the Lord or the Most Holy Theotokos, or some saint. There are special troparia used for the twelve and great holidays. In this case, they reveal the meaning of the holiday.

Troparions dedicated to the saint glorify the saint and briefly describe his life. Usually at the Divine Liturgy, troparia are sung after the small entrance. Troparions are also read on the canon, after the Irmos.

A canon is a church hymn dedicated to a holiday, the Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos or a saint. It consists of troparia, which are combined into songs. There are nine songs in total (the second is usually omitted), each of which begins with an irmos. The canons are also read at home. Usually there are two to four troparions in a song.

Troparion of St. Matrone sounds like this:

“The land of Tula is vegetated, the city of Moscow is an angelic warrior to the blessed old lady Matrono. From birth she remained in bodily blindness until the end of her days. But she generously received spiritual vision from God, a seer and a prayer book. Most of all, the gift of healing diseases was acquired. Help everyone with faith who flows to you and asks in illness of soul and body, our joy.”

It is translated like this:

“The birth of the Tula land, the city of Moscow, a warrior like an Angel, the blessed old woman Matrona, who was blind from her birth to her death. But she who received spiritual vision from God, foresaw the future and prayed fervently, most of all received the gift of curing diseases. To everyone who comes to you and asks you with faith, help them with mental and physical illnesses, our Joy.”

Service at the Intercession Monastery

There is also another troparion:

“The God-wise blessed elder Matrona, the prosperity of the land of Tula and the glorious adornment of the city of Moscow, let us praise this day, faithfully. This, having not known the light of day, was enlightened by the light of Christ and enriched with the gift of insight and healing. Having been a sojourner and a wanderer on earth, now in the heavenly chambers she stands before the Throne of God and prays for our souls.”

The translation goes like this:

“Today we will glorify the blessed old woman Matrona, wise from God, who blossomed in the land of Tula, the adornment of the city of Moscow. She did not know the light of day, but she was enlightened by the light of Christ, enriched with the gift of insight and healing. Having been a wanderer and guest on this earth, now she stands in the palaces of Heaven and prays for our souls.”

Rejoice, thou who through thy life has served many people; Rejoice, and after your death you continually help people. Kontakion 9

Even though you endured all sorts of sorrows and illnesses, Mother Matrono, constantly waging war against the forces of darkness, exposing their intrigues and deceits, and casting out demons from the possessed, even until the end of your days you helped the suffering, the ailing and the grieving, always singing to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

The branches of multi-proclamation will not be able to worthily glorify your holy life and the miracles performed by you by the power of God, wonderful to the old woman. But we, who want to psalmically praise God in His saints and strive with heartfelt love, dare to sing to you this:

Rejoice, thou who has chosen the narrow path and the strait gate; Rejoice, thou shalt shone with many virtues. Rejoice, you who have rejected all that is corruptible in your life; Rejoice, adorned with humility, like a precious crown. Rejoice, in the Gospel, like a bird of heaven that has lived on earth; Rejoice, O Son of God, who had no place to lay his head, who followed. Rejoice, now rejoicing in the abodes of heaven; Rejoice, and do not forsake us sinners who pray to you by your mercy. Rejoice, righteous mother Matrono, warm prayer book for us to God.

Wanting to save many people from the suffering of bodily and mental ailments, you remained all night, O righteous woman of God, in prayer, asking them for help and strengthening from our Lord Jesus Christ, singing to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

You were a wall and a covering during the days of your life, blessed mother, to all who came running to you, and after death you did not cease to intercede before God for the people who flow with faith to your tomb. Likewise, now hear us, sinners, who are overcome by sorrows, illnesses and many sorrows, and strive to help with your prayers, to all who cry out to you:

Rejoice, quick intercessor to the offended; Rejoice, comforter of those who suffer hardships. Rejoice, guardian of an honest marriage; Rejoice, pacification of all who are in enmity. Rejoice, those who are brought to justice are not brought to justice by the defender; Rejoice, and merciful intercessor to God for the guilty before the earthly judgment. Rejoice, shelter for the homeless; Rejoice, O all who call upon you, intercessor. Rejoice, righteous mother Matrono, warm prayer book for us to God.

Kontakion 11

You heard the singing of angels, O honorable mother Matrono, while still living on earth. Teach us, unworthy, how to glorify God, who is revered in the Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, to whom the heavenly hosts continually sing loudly: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

Your life shines with a luminous light, blessed Matrono, illuminating the darkness of this busy world, and attracts our souls to itself: for we, too, will be illuminated by the rays of God’s grace and we will pass the sorrowful path of our temporary life in a godly manner and we will achieve the Kingdom of God, where you, mother, have now settled. Hearing our voice calling to you:

Rejoice, light of God, ever-burning; Rejoice, honorable bead, who illumines us with the brilliance of your shrine. Rejoice, fragrant flower, who scents us with the Holy Spirit; Rejoice, rock of faith, strengthening the faint-hearted in piety. Rejoice, bright star, showing us the right path; Rejoice, good warrior of Christ, terrifying the demonic army with the sword of prayer. Rejoice, for all your life is holy and immaculate; Rejoice, for your death is honorable before the Lord. Rejoice, righteous mother Matrono, warm prayer book for us to God.

Kontakion 12

You have received the grace of God abundantly from the shrouds, O blessed mother, even as I will endure to remain with you all the days of your life. We believe without a doubt that even after your dormition, this grace will richly remain with you. For this reason, we desperately pray: do not deprive us, who are still wandering on earth, of your help and intercession, asking the Lord to have mercy on all who sing to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Singing your many and wondrous miracles, Mother Matrono, we praise God, who gave the city of Moscow and our Fatherland in the days of godlessness and persecution, an unshakable pillar of piety and faith. Now, blessed mother, with a grateful heart we sing to you:

Rejoice, thou who has gained the peace of Christ in thy soul; Rejoice, for this reason you brought many people around you to God. Rejoice, who in a weak body showed the power of God's grace; Rejoice, you who have shown us God’s mercy in the discovery of your holy relics. Rejoice, great prosperity has come to the host of Moscow saints; Rejoice, glorious adornment of the city of Moscow. Rejoice, dearest sorrower of our Fatherland before God. Rejoice, calling everyone to repentance and prayer for the Russian lands. Rejoice, righteous mother Matrono, warm prayer book for us to God.

Kontakion 13

O blessed mother, hear the song of praise now sung to you and ask us from the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins, a Christian peaceful death and a good answer at His terrible judgment, so that you and I will be honored in the villages of paradise to glorify the Holy Trinity, crying out: Alleluia.

Holy Kontakion

A short church chant that came from Byzantium. Dedicated to the Lord, a holiday, a saint or the Blessed Virgin Mary. The master of writing the kontakion was Saint Roman the Sweet Singer. His most famous troparion is dedicated to the Nativity of Christ (“Virgin of the Day of the Most Essential”).

  • Kontakion is used in the Liturgy, Vespers and Matins, and on the hours . You can also read it at home. At the Liturgy, kontakia are sung after the Small Entrance after the troparia. They are usually separated by singing the Glory (Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit).
  • Kontakia are part of the akathists. There are thirteen songs in total, in each one the kontakion is read first, then the ikos. The thirteenth kontakion is repeated three times.

The Kontakion to Saint Matrona sounds like this:

“Pre-chosen from the womb of the mother, the righteous Matrono, to the service of Christ, walking the path of sorrows and sorrows, having demonstrated firm faith and piety, you pleased God. Moreover, honoring your memory, we pray to you: help us too to abide in God’s love, blessed old lady.”

It is translated this way:

“From the womb of her mother, the righteous Matrona was called to serve Christ, walking through sorrows and sorrows, showing strong faith and piety, and thereby pleasing God. Thus, honoring your memory, we pray to you: help us to be in God’s love, blessed old woman.”

Song 4

Irmos:

I heard, O Lord, Thy sacrament, I understood Thy works and glorified Thy Divinity.

Chorus

: Holy blessed Matrono, pray to God for us.

God's gaze on you was revealed in particular, blessed mother, as if you were blind and weak in body, you were enriched with the gift of insight and miracles and you were adorned with an incorruptible crown from the Lord.

Thou hast despised the wisdom of the flesh, O blessed one, thou art greatly enriched by the wisdom by which the Lord makes the blind wise.

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Like the alabaster of the world, scenting the borders of Russia, we know you, righteous Matron, for the people of our land flock to you from all ends, asking for your intercession.

And now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Theotokos:

We bless you all, O Most Holy Virgin, who seeks the perishing, heals the weak, and protects the orphaned.

How to pray correctly

You should ask Matrona for help with only positive thoughts and a strict attitude

A request for help must be sincere; it is important that the intentions are pure and the thoughts are not sinful

The following rules must be observed:

  • pretense is unacceptable;
  • you need to concentrate and not be distracted;
  • if a prayer is said for someone, then they think only about this person;
  • You cannot say a prayer in a whisper, to yourself;
  • Matrona will hear only if you pronounce the words at least in a whisper, but better loudly and with feeling.

It is not necessary to venerate the icon in the nearest church or go to the Intercession Monastery, or any other

So that the Saint hears the prayer, you can read it at home, but you must understand that it is important to purify your thoughts and thoughts

Before starting, if we are not talking about short prayer requests, be sure to ask for a blessing from the parish priest. It is advisable to confess and take communion, ask for forgiveness for the grief caused and the insults brought to other people. During the reading (forty days), you must regularly attend church.

You shouldn’t give up if what you want doesn’t come into your hands and your thoughts don’t become real in the first months. The implementation of an idea may require unprecedented help from higher powers, so prayers can last for years. Matrona will definitely help, but only if the person’s prayers are sincere, he lives humbly and with dignity.

Song 9

Irmos:

Truly we confess Theotokos, saved by You, Pure Virgin, with disembodied faces magnifying You.

Chorus:

Holy blessed Matrono, pray to God for us.

Oh, great miracle, dry bones exude healing and our spirit raises our corruptible nature to the Imperishable God. For this reason, we call Matrona blessed.

Save the city of Moscow and the monastery of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, where your honorable relics rest, righteous Matrono, from all misfortunes and evils and confirm in the right faith and piety of all who revere you.

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Accept our unworthy prayer, blessed Matrona, and, as you promised, intercede before the Lord to grant us something useful, so that with you we will be worthy to glorify the Holy Trinity in the villages of paradise.

And now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Theotokos:

We know Thy true chosen one, the Mother of God, the blessed Matrona: for this, on the day of veneration of Thy icon, the Quick to Hear, was born, in the temple of Thy Assumption she was baptized, Thy image of the Seek for the Lost was written with her care, and the body also rests and prays for our souls in the monastery of Thy venerable Protection.
