Drunkenness is a great grief for the family of an alcoholic. Alcohol abuse destroys not only a person’s physical body, but also his soul. Living with such people is very difficult. Therefore, you need to fight drunkenness by any available means, including prayer.
Prayer against drunkenness is a sacred ritual to which believers turn with a request to deliver a husband, son, daughter or other family member from the harmful craving for alcohol. Powerful support from heaven helps the lost to cope with the illness, return to sobriety and a healthy lifestyle. However, you should not rely only on God. It is necessary to use prayer for drunkenness in conjunction with drug treatment and psychotherapy. Without making your own efforts, it is impossible to cope with alcoholism.
The role of prayers in the fight against alcoholism
A person who cannot refuse to drink strong drinks soon forgets about everything and everyone, degrading and losing all principles of morality. After a while, friends, colleagues, acquaintances turn away from him, and only his relatives do everything to help him.
Nowadays, there are a large number of successful ways to treat this disease. However, the most harmless and popular are prayers. And knowing at least a few strong prayers, you will be able to help your loved one.
Prayers against drunkenness and binge drinking can be read in front of an image of a saint, an icon, or you can simply collect all your thoughts and sincerely pray to the Almighty in your own words. It is important to open your soul and calm your mind.
Our ancestors also equated the craving for alcoholic drinks to a reptile. According to Christian legend, the culprit of the fall of sins on humanity was the tempting serpent.
From the history of the appearance of the icon “Inexhaustible Chalice”
The prototype of the icon of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice” appeared to the Orthodox world in 1878.
In the Efremov district of the Tula province lived a drunkard peasant. Possessed by the green serpent, he drank away all the property in his house and came to a miserable existence. Because of alcohol, his legs were paralyzed, but he did not give up his habit. Exactly until he had a dream in which an old man appeared to him and suggested to him a remedy for healing from a destructive addiction: go to Serpukhov, to the Vvedensky Vladychny Monastery, find there the image of the “Inexhaustible Chalice” and serve a prayer service in front of it. However, the peasant did not dare to follow the elder’s advice - because of his sore legs and lack of outside help.
The dream was repeated 2 more times, the third time the old man in it already gave the drunkard a threatening order. Frightened by him, the peasant set off on the road on all fours, stopping along the way in one village for the night. The old woman, whose guest the traveler was, saw his suffering, took pity on him and rubbed his feet at night and put him to sleep on the stove. At night, the peasant felt relief, was able to get up, and then continued his journey on his feet, first leaning on 2 sticks, then on just one.
Having reached Serpukhov, he came to the indicated monastery and told about his dreams, but it turned out that no one had heard about the image of the Holy Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice”. Then someone suggested looking at the icon hanging in the passage from the church to the sacristy - what if this is it? Having examined the icon, everyone was extremely surprised to see the inscription “Inexhaustible Chalice” on its reverse side. And in the old man from his dream, the peasant recognized the man who built this monastery - Father Varlaam.
The face of the Mother of God was immediately taken to the temple and a prayer service was served in front of it. The peasant returned home completely healthy - on healthy legs, cured of his craving for alcohol.
The news about the newly appeared icon “The Inexhaustible Chalice” and the peasant’s miraculous recovery very soon spread beyond the monastery. Suffering people began to flock to the image of the Mother of God from everywhere. They offered their prayers to her, asking for deliverance from drunkenness, and were convinced of her mercy and miraculousness.

In especially difficult cases, you need to contact the saint for forty weeks. The prayer goes like this:
- “Oh, Saint Boniface, servant of the merciful Lord God! Hear those who turn to you, suffering from a harmful craving for drinking wine, and, just as throughout your entire life on earth you have never refused to help those who ask, so now deliver the unfortunate (name of your son). Once upon a time, God-wise father, when hail destroyed your vineyard, you, thanking God, ordered those grapes that were preserved to be processed and to invite the poor. After this, you ordered the new wine to be poured drop by drop into different vessels and, having prayed, performed a miracle: the wine multiplied in all the vessels, and the poor were able to fill their vessels. Oh, God's saint! Just as wine once, through your prayer, increased for the benefit of the church and the poor, so now let it decrease where it causes harm, and save (son’s name) from the addiction of drinking wine. Heal him from a serious illness, deliver him from demonic temptation, strengthen him weak and infirm, give him strength and strength to endure this temptation, return him to a sober and healthy life. Direct him to the righteous path of work, invest in him the desire for spiritual vigor and sober life. Help him, God's saint Boniface, when the thirst for alcohol consumes him, destroy this destructive addiction, which entails excommunication from the Kingdom of Heaven. Let piety be established in the eternal radiance of the infinite Kingdom and worthily glorify our Lord with His Father and His Life-giving Most Holy Spirit. Amen".

Heal the illnesses of my son (name) and deliver him from mental sorrow and physical illness, deliver him from the torment and temptations of the devil and his addiction to wine. How can one drive out the demon of drunkenness? Through prayer and fasting." And after completing his earthly mission, the saint continues to respond to the requests of those whose faith is unshakable.

Prayer to Matrona of Moscow against drunkenness
Why is prayer for healing from drunkenness to Matronushka effective? The answer is hidden in the difficult life of the saint. She was forced to experience a lot of terrible physical suffering, which she endured with dignity, and even helped many sufferers throughout her life.
A prayer addressed to her will help heal from alcoholism and other mental illnesses. The clergy recommend reading a prayer before the image of the Saint on certain days. For example, if you want to get rid of your son’s drunkenness, then a prayer service is read on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and on other days of the week they pray for the salvation of the soul of a lost woman.
If you need to heal drinking children, then it is customary to read the prayer for 40 days. This way you will enhance the effect of requests for help.
"Inexhaustible Chalice"
This icon of the Mother of God is one of the most powerful for getting rid of alcoholism. There is a lot of evidence that it helped overcome addiction even in the most advanced stages. The prayer service can be said in church or at home.
There is a legend about this icon. The alcoholic dreamed of an angel who ordered him to visit the cathedral and ask for help before the “Inexhaustible Chalice.” The man did not listen. He dreamed of the saint again, but this again did not bring results.
The man's legs gave out and he had to crawl into the cathedral. There was no icon of the Mother of God in the monastery, but the clergy remembered that they had seen it in the basement and brought it.
The patient asked her for help. The prayer ritual saved him. He was able to overcome his addiction and no longer touched vodka. After a few weeks he felt much better. After this, the “Inexhaustible Chalice” disappeared, but it was restored so that people could turn to it with their problem.
Words spoken in front of the icon:
“Oh, most merciful Lady! We now resort to Your intercession, do not despise our prayers, but graciously hear us: wives, children, mothers; and the serious illness of drunkenness of those possessed, and for this sake from your mother - the Church of Christ and the salvation of those who fall away, brothers and sisters, and heal our relatives. Oh, merciful Mother of God, touch their hearts and quickly raise them from the falls of sin, bring them to saving abstinence. Pray to Your Son, Christ our God, to forgive us our sins and not to turn His mercy away from His people, but to strengthen us in sobriety and chastity. Accept, O Most Holy Theotokos, the prayers of mothers who shed tears for their children, of wives who weep for their husbands, of children, orphans and wretches, abandoned by those who have gone astray, and of all of us who fall before Your icon. And may this cry of ours, through Your prayers, come to the throne of the Most High. Cover and protect us from the evil trap and all the snares of the enemy, in the terrible hour of our exodus, help us to pass through the airy ordeals without stumbling, with Your prayers deliver us from eternal condemnation, so that the mercy of God will cover us for the endless ages of ages. Amen".
The prayer book is performed in compliance with the rules:
- read in the cathedral or at home twice;
- the prayer is said for forty days;
- the icon is placed on a flat surface, a church candle is lit next to it and a bowl of holy water is placed (to enhance the effect, you can place the image of the Almighty).
After a strong, sincere prayer has been read, you need to give the alcoholic the charmed liquid to drink (mix it into first courses, tea, coffee).
Prayer to Moses Murin from drunkenness
Moses Murin is one of the most revered saints, to whom it is customary to pray for deliverance from drunkenness and binges.
Prayer often saves even the most hopeless, since this saint is an intercessor before our Lord God for all fornicators and drinkers.
Attention! The prayer to Murin can be read by the patient himself or his close relatives if he resists treatment.
There are several tips to help strengthen your prayer:
- If you are reading for your husband’s alcoholism, then it is better to do this on certain days, namely Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- If a prayer book is said for a woman, then it is better to do it on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
- The prayer is not read on church holidays and Sundays.
- You should ask Murin for help on the full moon or in the last phase.
- Say your prayer sincerely and with good intentions.
If you do not take this prayer seriously, there may be disastrous consequences. An alcoholic will drink even more often, and those asking for him may suffer from serious illnesses. In addition, the patient’s relatives may also pay.
Father's recommendations
Archpriest Maxim Pletnev, clergyman of the Church of the Holy Image of the Savior Not Made by Hands on Konyushennaya Square, and also the head of the Coordination Center for Combating Alcoholism and Drug Addiction of the St. Petersburg Diocese, talks about the rules by which one should pray for a drinking relative.
Father Maxim suggests taking a prayer service for those suffering from alcoholism, selecting several prayers from there to read independently. Another option is to contact the priest with a request to serve the entire prayer service.
The “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon is very strong . An akathist to her helps direct the thoughts of those praying to care for loved ones.
You can also address God in your own words. Pray to God, the Mother of God, the saints - to those to whom the heart lies or a spiritual connection is felt.
While praying, you should think about your need or request to the Almighty . For example, saying “Lord, have mercy” twelve times, you need to think about pardoning a drinking relative. In this case, all daily prayer will be filled with suffering of the heart and the desire to help. Because alcohol addiction of loved ones is a great grief. You can and should turn to the Lord God about this in prayer.
Prayer to Boniface from drunkenness
Saint Boniface is the protector of alcoholics and those who lead a dissolute lifestyle. Both the relatives of alcoholics and the patients themselves, who are faced with dependence on alcoholic beverages, turn to him before the Lord.
If you are praying for your son, then you need to say the mother’s prayer and be sure to ask forgiveness for your child before the saint, promising that in the future you will watch him more closely.
Important! If a believer cries not for himself, but for someone close to him, then the prayer will be the most powerful.
Which saints to pray for deliverance from alcoholism
There are several saints who are traditionally turned to when loved ones are alcoholic:
Virgin Mary - helps in solving family problems, including those related to drunkenness of one of the family members. The most miraculous is considered to be the image of the Mother of God on the “Inexhaustible Chalice” icon . Many people talk about how they got rid of addiction forever after turning to this shrine.
Matrona of Moscow is a saint who was famous for her miracles both during her life and after her death. She helps in many matters - from conceiving children to getting rid of addictions. You can pray in the church near the holy relics or simply in front of the image of Matrona.
John of Kronstadt is a saint who, during his lifetime, possessed the gift of healing from the green serpent. He preached a sober lifestyle and treated people for drunkenness in front of thousands of witnesses. Even after the death of a saint, turning to him grants healing to alcoholics.
Saint Boniface - before turning to Christianity, he sinned a lot, drank drunkenly, and committed adultery. But he repented of his sins and accepted martyrdom. Since then he has been helping people escape addiction.
Nicholas the Wonderworker is a saint who helps all those who pray in any trouble. According to eyewitnesses, turning to him frees the most inveterate drunkards from the disease.
In addition, you can pray directly to Jesus Christ or the Patron Saint of the drinker . The main thing here is sincerity of intention and deep faith.
Psalms for drunkenness
The advantage of hymns from the Psalter is that you can choose exactly the one that will best suit your life situation. In Orthodoxy, it is believed that the appearance of any addiction in a person is due to an evil spirit. And here the following psalms can come to your aid:
Psalm 90
It is pronounced to get rid of a variety of addictions, be it alcoholism, drug addiction or gambling addiction. Read more about Psalm 90.
Psalms 26 and 69
They are considered no less effective in confronting addictions. Read more about Psalm 26 and Psalm 69.
To enhance their effect, you need to pronounce them together with the above chant.
Psalm 101
Another effective psalm against drunkenness (Psalm 101), but when pronouncing it you should adhere to the following recommendations:
- As you read, mention not only the sufferer, but also yourself.
- Learn the text of the chant by heart and keep it in memory.
This applies to all psalms. Plus, you can additionally recite an appeal to the saints, the prayers for which we have given above.
Particularly powerful are the prayers for the daughter or son’s drunkenness that the mother asks for. It is better to read such prayers at dawn, when the house is full. Ideally, pray for a person with the whole family.
The Passion of Drunkenness
Is there a prayer for a son’s drunkenness? Before answering this question, we should talk about alcohol addiction from the point of view of Orthodoxy.
A person’s violation of the Divine moral law (commandments) is called sin. And if there is no struggle against sin, then it takes strong roots in a person’s soul and subjugates him to itself. Such a chronic disease of the soul is called passion. Drunkenness is one of the sinful passions, a type of gluttony. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages causes addiction not only on a physiological, but also on a spiritual level. This passion enslaves a person, suppresses his will, and interferes with spiritual development. For a drunkard, alcohol becomes an idol, and God, family, work, self-improvement fade into the background. Saint Basil the Great said:
“Fasting and prayer will not enter a soul defiled by drunkenness” (“Conversations”).
Alcoholism
The Apostle Paul taught: “Drunkards will not inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:10). In the Gospel, this passion is mentioned on a par with fornication, sins of sodom (fornication), covetousness (gluttony for enrichment). This emphasizes the destructive effect of drunkenness on the human soul.
Any passion entails many other passions. And drunkenness is no exception. While intoxicated, a person is unable to control himself. He can commit terrible sins that he would not commit if he was sober. For example, fornication, violence, anger, foul language.
“Do not get drunk with wine, which causes debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18).
Saint John Chrysostom taught:
“The devil loves nothing more than luxury and drunkenness, since no one fulfills his will like a drunkard” (“On True Christianity”).
The saint emphasized that it is not the wine itself, which is permissible in moderation, that is evil, but its excessive consumption (“Conversations on Statues”). Therefore, the prayer for my son’s drunkenness is not directed against alcohol, but against human passions.
