The Legend of Peter and Fevronia
Prince Peter took the life of the serpent, who was tempting his brother’s wife, taking on his own appearance. During the fight with the devil, drops of poisonous blood splashed onto Peter, which provoked the development of a severe and incurable disease.

The man’s body was covered with scabs, the disease progressed, and even famous medical saints could not cope with it. One day the prince had a prophetic dream that a commoner girl named Fevronia could heal him. The princely envoy found a peasant woman in one of the villages. The girl instructed Peter to come to her in person. A half-dead man came to the healer, and she demanded marriage as payment for recovery.

The prince agreed, but the girl saw the deceit. Conjugal rule
Peter took over the reign of the city. The townspeople did not like his commoner wife. The prince was given an ultimatum: wife or throne. Peter chose a wife and they left the city together.
Fevronia calmed and supported her dejected husband as best she could. But soon a bloody struggle for the throne broke out in Murom, it came to bloody murders and severe unrest. The distraught boyars could not stand the intensity of passions and begged Peter and Fevronia to return and take control of Murom. A miracle happened and the townspeople fell in love with kind Fevronia for her meek disposition, modesty and wisdom.
The end of the earthly journey
At the end of their life, the husband and wife decided to leave the city for a monastery. They took monastic vows with the names David and Euphrosyne.
The monks earnestly prayed to the Heavenly Father to grant them a glorious death on the same day and hour. The Lord fulfilled their request. One day Euphrosyne was sitting in the air and embroidering the Face of the Queen of Heaven. A messenger from David came to her with the news that the hour of death had come and he was waiting for his beloved nun. She asked me to wait a little to finish the job. Soon the messenger visited the nun for the second time with the news that David could no longer wait for her and was dying. Euphrosyne left her embroidery, went into her cell, lay down on the bed, and soon reposed in the Lord.

The monks bequeathed that upon death they should be buried in one coffin. They even prepared the tomb in advance, dividing it in the middle with a small barrier. But the burial of a man and a woman in the same coffin was contrary to monastic dogma and their bodies were separated. But to everyone's surprise, in the morning their bodies lay together.
They were separated again, but the late spouses miraculously found themselves together again.
The more monastic brethren did not dare to separate the bodies.
The end of the earthly journey
In old age, following the customs of that time and the dictates of their souls, the couple took monastic vows (they were named David and Euphrosyne).
They saw this step as a way to remove themselves from worldly worries, devote themselves to pious and humble service to God, and worthily prepare for their departure from life. Even after tonsure, the main marriage vow did not lose its power for them, and therefore the spouses prayed a lot to die on the same day and hour, because it seemed unthinkable for them to live without each other for even a short time. They also asked to be buried in the same coffin. And so it happened.
Why Peter and Fevronia became saints
Why did the Lord glorify this childless couple? For what merits did she become a model of an ideal family?
The modern world is far from ideal. In case of problems that arise, people turn to the Orthodox church as a last resort, mechanically read a prayer and light a candle, and with the thoughts “well, finally, now everything will come true,” they leave the church and forget about God again. But the church is not a service bureau, it is communication with God, with His saints, participation in the Sacraments and in the life of the parish.
The princes were also simple people with weaknesses and hopes, and had “earthly” goals. They were not saints, because holiness comes with awareness of one’s duty and place in the world. The girl probably dreamed of a loving husband and prayed to the Almighty to send her a worthy life partner. She considered the appearance of the prince in her domain as help from Heaven. Well, Peter hardly thought that he would marry a peasant woman.
