Feast of the Icon of the Kazan Mother of God
The feast of this sacred icon is celebrated twice a year. In summer the festival falls on July 21st. It is dedicated to the acquisition of a shrine. The sacred image of the Mother of God appeared in a dream to little Matrona. The second festival comes in the fall. It is celebrated on November 4th.
History says that on this date, during the Time of Troubles, the holy icon helped liberate Moscow from the invasion of the Poles. Also on this date, a significant event for everyone was the restoration of the Kazan Cathedral in Moscow in front of Red Square. The face of the Kazan Mother of God is considered one of the greatest in the Orthodox Church.
History of the icon
Ivan the Terrible conquered Kazan and ordered the conversion of local Muslims to Christianity. They offered fierce resistance, and the big fire of the Kazan Kremlin, along with part of the city, was regarded as the wrath of God for this. It was here that the miraculous icon was revealed, which received the name Kazan. The icon of the Mother of God was found buried in the ground at the site of the fire. The place was indicated by the little girl Matrona thanks to her dreams of the appearance of the Blessed Virgin. Immediately after its acquisition, the image performed several miracles - when it was transferred to the temple, two blind men regained their sight during a religious procession. Ivan the Terrible, surprised by such a miracle, gave the order to build the Kazan Cathedral and with it a convent.
In the seventeenth century, the icon saved Russia from the Poles. The army turned to the Most Holy Theotokos for help, organizing a prayer service and observing a three-day fast. God heard their prayer and appeared in a dream to one sick archbishop. The Almighty said that through the prayers of the Mother of God and the saints, the army would defeat the enemies the next day. And to confirm the truth of the dream, he granted the archbishop healing from illnesses. In memory of this event, a celebration of the icon was established, which takes place on November 4.

Icons and lists that have survived to this day
This prayer was sent to believers in a miraculous way. As you know, it was discovered by the daughter of the merchant Matryona after a strong fire in Kazan. Since then, copies have been made many times from the original, which also have miraculous powers.
The first copy of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God was made in 1579. He was subsequently handed over to Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Moscow. After some time, the list was transferred in 1636 to the Kazan Cathedral built on Red Square. And in 1737, the icon was placed in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in St. Petersburg. But in 1811, it was again decided to return the icon to the Kazan Cathedral.
The second known list was made in 1611. A period of troubled times has arrived. Therefore, the new icon was intended directly for Dmitry Pozharsky, who led the militia army that defended Moscow from the Poles.
The icon of the Kazan Mother of God was known for its powerful power, so many churches wanted to have it on their iconostasis. Therefore, a huge number of lists were made in the 18th century. But, unfortunately, it so happened that the original icon was lost. In the 20th century, the Shrine was stolen and disappeared without a trace.
Copies made from the miraculous icon quickly spread throughout the world. Many of them were taken abroad after the 1917 revolution. The modern Russian Orthodox Church strives to ensure that the Shrines are returned to their historical homeland. Currently, the oldest list can be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery. This icon is dated 1606.
There is also a Shrine in the residence of the Moscow Patriarch. It was handed over as a sign of the end of the confrontation by the Roman Catholic Church. It is believed that the list closest to the original is in the Prince Vladimir Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

First miracle
The discovery of the image of the Kazan Mother of God inspired Christians to take part in the procession of the Cross, in which they took with them the miraculously surviving image. Many people followed the archbishop, including two blind people. Their vision suddenly returned as soon as the Divine Light touched their eyes. This incredible healing made the pagans believe that prayer to the icon of the Kazan Mother of God was truly powerful.
The place where the face lay under the ruins was, at the request of Tsar the Terrible, turned into a monastery for women. The majestic cathedral was restored and a miraculous image was placed under its domes. Here, Matrona and her mother, tonsured into nuns, served the Lord until the last days of their lives.
