Prayer

O most praiseworthy and wonderful prophet of God, Nahum! Hear us, sinners and indecent ones, who at this hour stand before your holy icon and diligently resort to your intercession. Pray for us, the Lover of Mankind, God, may He give us a spirit of repentance and contrition for our sins and, by His omnipotent grace, may He help us to leave the paths of wickedness, may we excel in every endeavor, may He strengthen us in the fight against our passions and lusts; may the spirit of humility and meekness, the spirit of brotherly love and kindness, the spirit of patience and chastity, the spirit of zeal for the glory of God and the salvation of our neighbors, implant into our hearts. Abolish with your prayers, prophet, the evil customs of the world, especially the destructive and pernicious spirit of this age, infecting the Christian race with disrespect for the Divine Orthodox Faith, for the statutes of the Holy Church and for the commandments of the Lord, disrespect for parents and those in power, and casting people into the abyss of wickedness , corruption and destruction. Turn away from us, most wonderfully prophesied, by your intercession the righteous wrath of God, and deliver all the cities and towns of our kingdom from rainlessness and famine, from terrible storms and earthquakes, from deadly plagues and diseases, from the invasion of enemies and internecine warfare. Strengthen Orthodox people with your prayers, prosper them in all good deeds and undertakings for the establishment of peace and truth in their power. Help the All-Russian Christ-loving army in battles with our enemies. Ask, prophet of God, from the Lord for our shepherds holy zeal for God, heartfelt concern for the salvation of the flock, wisdom in teaching and management, piety and strength in temptation, ask the judges for impartiality and selflessness, righteousness and compassion for the offended, for all those in authority to care for their subordinates, mercy and justice, and to subordinates we command humility and obedience to authority and diligent fulfillment of their duties; Yes, having lived in peace and piety in this world, we will be worthy to partake of eternal blessings in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom honor and worship are due, with His Beginning Father and the Most Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer to all saints and ethereal heavenly powers

Holy God and rest in the saints, glorified by the thrice-holy voice in heaven from Angels, praised on earth by man in His saints: having given grace to each by Thy Holy Spirit according to the bestowal of Christ, and by that ordaining Thy holy Church to be Apostles, prophets, and evangelists , you are shepherds and teachers, preaching in their own words. You yourself act all in all, many saints have been accomplished in every generation and generation, having pleased you with various virtues, and leaving us with an image of your good deeds, in the joy that has passed, prepare, in it the temptations themselves were, and help us who are attacked . Remembering all these saints and praising their godly lives, I praise You Himself, who acted in them, and believing in Your goodness, the gift of being, I diligently pray to You, Holy of Holies, grant to me a sinner to follow their teaching, moreover, by Your all-effective grace, heavenly ones with them be worthy of glory, praising Your most holy name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

On December 14, the church honors the memory of Saint Naum, one of the 12 minor prophets. He was born in the village of Elkosha, located in Northern Israel. An Old Testament book was published under his name, which quite vividly describes the political and religious state of Israel at that time. According to legend, Naum died at the age of 45 and was buried in his homeland.

In Rus', the prophet Naum was considered the patron saint of students, for which he was nicknamed the Grammar. In alphabet books and copybooks of the 18th century one could find a prayer addressed to the saint:

According to the old Russian tradition, it was on Naumov’s day that children were sent to study. They served a prayer service, asked for a blessing for the child and invited a “teacher” to the house, whose role at that time was played by deacons. In wealthy houses from the parish, “teachers” staged a real performance with bows and requests to teach wisdom.

In those days, few could afford to send a teenager to study. However, people understood that it was much easier for a literate person to become popular. Even dreams in which the alphabet was seen were interpreted in their own way: if an illiterate person saw such a dream, then troubles and troubles awaited him, while for a literate person the vision promised happiness and prosperity.

It was believed that you shouldn’t eat during lessons, otherwise you’ll forget what you’ve learned; you shouldn’t leave a book open - you’ll forget everything you learned. And people also believed that the prophet Nahum would bring a bad mind to mind.

In the old days, the school year did not begin on one day, as it does now (September 1). Some children began school in August, others in September, and others on the day of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Rural children, helping their parents harvest the harvest, went to study on Naumov Day.

Previously, Teacher's Day fell on this date. In Rus', this profession was considered very important and respectable. Only a person with special abilities could become a teacher.

On this day they prayed to the saint to teach reason to the mind.

The Monastery of St. Naum, which is located on a hill near Lake Ohrid, was built in the 9th-10th centuries by St. Naum of Ohrid, who was the youngest student of Cyril and Methodius, with the help of the rulers of Bulgaria, Simeon and Boris. Subsequently, after the death of the saint, his relics were placed in the monastery church. The monastery got its name in honor of the saint. Previously, the residence of the Archbishop of Ohrid was located here; today the monastery is under the jurisdiction of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.

The Church of Nahum was similar to the Church of St. Clement, which is shaped like a clover-shamrock. After the end of World War II, during archaeological research, only columns and parts of the walls of the church were found. It is not clear when they managed to destroy it; there is an assumption that it was the work of the Turks who attacked Ohrid.

During the Ottoman period, sometime in the 16th century, the actual church was built on the columns of the church in two stages. Its modern building has a bizarre shape - the shape of an embedded cross in a square space with a dome, standing on four columns. A similar dome with a high vestibule has been added above.

Church interior

The landmark of Macedonia is decorated with paintings made by the master Trpo. Particularly impressive are the scenes from the life and miracle of St. Naum of Ohrid. They are drawn in the second zone of the mysterious paracleis of Naum. These scenes tell the story of the saint's life and illustrate some of the miracles that he performed. There was a belief that Saint Naum could also cure mental illnesses. According to some reports, there was a hospital inside the monastery.

The iconostasis of the church was carved in 1711 by unknown masters. The icons make an indelible impression, among them the “Crucifixion of Christ” and “Entry into Jerusalem” stand out. They are one of the highest achievements of the first half of the 18th century.

The columns of the Ohrid landmark are decorated with Cyrillic inscriptions, and there is also one verb-Cyrillic inscription dating from the late 10th to 12th centuries. They are an example of the oldest Slavic letters (Cyrillic and Glagolitic).

The Monastery of St. Naum rises on Mount Galichitsa, and healing springs flow right below it; many tourists flock here to worship the world shrine and drink life-giving water. Picturesque landscapes complement the overall picture, leaving the best impression of the holy places.

Brief life of Equal-to-the-Apostles Naum of Ohrid

The Most Reverend Na-um of Ohrid, a Bol-garin by birth, was one of the scholars of the holy equals -th Ki-ril-la and Me-fo-diya (commemorated on May 11) and also sacred to Kli-men-tu Ohrid-sky at the time -he was pro-ve-di Evan-ge-lia in Bol-ga-ria. Subsequently, the most venerable Na-um became the pre-saint of Kli-ment in the mo-na-sta-re on the bank of Ohrid -sko-go-lake, where he-vis-halled for ten years. Prayers before the icon of the Mother of God “Addition of mind”

First prayer

O Blessed Virgin! You are the Bride of God the Father and the Mother of His Divine Son Jesus Christ! You are the queen of angels and the salvation of people, the accuser of sinners and the punisher of apostates. Have mercy on us, who have gravely sinned and failed to fulfill God’s commandments, broken the vows of baptism and vows of monasticism, and many others that we promised to fulfill. When the Holy Spirit turned away from King Saul, fear and despair fell upon him, and the darkness of despair and a bleak mood tormented him. Now, because of our sins, we have all lost the grace of the Holy Spirit. The mind is mired in the vanity of thoughts, oblivion of God has darkened our souls, and now our hearts are oppressed by all kinds of pain, sorrow, illness, hatred, evil, enmity, revenge, darkness and other sins. And, not having joy and consolation, we call You, Mother of our God, Jesus Christ, so we beg Your Son to forgive us all our sins and to send us the Comforter Spirit, as He sent him to the apostles, but those who are comforted and enlightened by Him, we sing a song of gratitude to You. Rejoice, Most Holy Theotokos, that through reason you have added salvation to us. Amen.

Second prayer

My steadfast queen, my holy hope, father's friend and strange protector, help in need and embittered by the veil, behold my attack, behold my pain; Temptations assail me on all sides, but I am not an intercessor. You yourself help me as if I were weak, feed me as if it were strange, teach me as if it were delirium, heal me and save me as if I were hopeless. Neither imams of any other help, nor imams of any other hope, if only You, Lady, Help us, we hope in You and boast in You, your God is a rabbi, so we will not be ashamed. We resort to Your mercy, Virgin Mary, do not neglect prayers in pain, but deliver us from problems, Pure and Blessed One. Amen.

Prayer three

Prayer four

Confirm the wisdom of the Mentor and the significance of the Giver, the foolish Enlightener and the poor, the Intercessor, the Mother of Christ our God; You will give me the Word, Who gave birth to the Word of the Father, and so boldly ask Your Son for us. Amen.

Icon of Sergius of Radonezh

Bartholomew, that was the name of the future monk, had a hard time learning, even when reading the Holy Scriptures he made many mistakes. Understanding the difficulties, the boy with all his soul asked God to help him in his studies. And one day an angel appeared before him in the form of a monk, promising the boy that he would soon become the most educated child around.
