Liturgy in Georgian in Russian transcription

“Fallen, šegvitskalen” instead of “Lord, have mercy”

On January 27, the Orthodox Church honors Saint Nina, Equal to the Apostles. Divine services were held in many churches in the Southern Urals. And in the Church of St. Basil the Great, Chelyabinsk Georgians prayed during the Divine Liturgy. Among them was the chairman of the Georgian Cultural Center Besarion Patsatsiya.

The service was led by the rector of the church, Archpriest Sergius Sevastyanov. After the liturgy and festive prayer service, he reminded that in Georgia St. Nina is revered no less than in our country, Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. In the 4th century, this young woman, a relative of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, fearlessly preached the Gospel in the Georgian lands.

The liturgy was not entirely ordinary: many litanies, exclamations of the clergy and chants performed by the choir sounded in Georgian. “Five to ten years ago, a tradition arose at every Sunday and holiday liturgy and at every vigil to read the first small litany in Georgian. Well, today, on the occasion of the day of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, there were more exclamations, hymns, and readings, even the Lord’s Prayer was sung in both Russian and Georgian,” said Father Sergius.

The rector of St. Basil's Church has long been interested in the history and culture of Georgia. Coming to Tbilisi and Batumi, serving in Orthodox churches with local priests, Father Sergius learned several liturgical exclamations in Georgian. This was many years ago. Today, the priest has mastered the language so much that he reads prayers according to the Georgian service book.

The Geladze family moved to Chelyabinsk in 1994. Initially, the spouses Levan and Mzia visited the St. Simeon Cathedral, where they met Father Sergius Sevastyanov. They also brought their children to the services - son Nikolai and daughter Nina, named after the holy enlightener of Georgia. In 1996, the Geladzes became parishioners of the newly opened St. Basil's Church. “We went to the ChTZ cultural center with our child,” says Mzia Geladze. “From there we even watched as they dug a pit. We wondered what would happen here. It turned out that they were building a temple. And a temple for a Georgian is sacred. My family was religious, my grandmother was a parishioner of the Alexander Nevsky Church in Tbilisi. She brought me there too.”

Even in Soviet times, recalls Mzia Geladze, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II was the most respected and authoritative person in the republic. And the Glinsk elders served in the Alexander Nevsky Church - Metropolitan Zinovy (Mazhuga) and Schema-Archimandrite Vitaly (Sidorenko), who moved to the Georgian SSR after the closure of the Glinsk hermitage in the Sumy region.

“Several years ago, Georgian chants began to be performed in our church,” says Mzia Geladze. – We started with the Easter service. Then I met a Georgian woman who told me: “I came to this service by accident, but when I heard “Shegvitskalen fell” - in Georgian “Lord have mercy,” I cried throughout the service. I informed all my friends and acquaintances: there are Georgian services in this temple.” After that, people reached out - one “Lord have mercy” attracted many, many. To those who are left without a homeland, even these two words bring great joy. Thank God we have the same religion. And in church life there is no difference other than linguistic. I come to a Russian church - everything is the same as in Georgia. Is it possible that some holidays are more revered in Georgia, some in Russia. But according to the calendar, all this coincides absolutely. And thank God, there is Eucharistic communion between us. This is one Church speaking different languages.”

After the service, magnificent satsivi was served in the refectory of St. Basil's Church. Cold turkey in a special sauce is a traditional Christmas dish in the Caucasus. Hospitable Mzia Geladze prepared it at home and brought it to the temple. Satsivi for Chelyabinsk Georgians is a reminder of their distant and sunny native land.

Notre Père, qui es aux cieux,

que ton nom soit sanctifie,

que ton regne vienne,

que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel;

donne-nous aujourd'hui notre pain essentiel;

remets-nous nos dettes, comme nous aussi les remettons à nos débiteurs;

et ne nous laisse pas entrer dans l'épreuve, mais délivre-nous du malin.

Car c'est à toi qu'appartiennent

le regne,

la puissance

et la gloire, aux siècles des siècles.

Amen.

Latin transcription

This method of learning helps to avoid mistakes when pronouncing words. It is used at the stage of familiarization with an unfamiliar language. First, you can master the version written in Russian letters. After this, you can read the Latin transcription.

In RussianLatin transcription
Nótre Per, ki o sieux, ke ton nom súá santifié, ke ton ren vián, ke ta volonté súa fet sur la ter com o sel; don-nu ojurdui notre pan essanciel; rome-nu no det, com nu osi le rometon a no debiter; eh no nu les paz-antré dan lepreuve, me delivre-nu du malan. Reading rules

When prayer words are spoken, it is necessary to put your soul into them. Only with a sincere appeal can you ask for help and support during trials. God hears prayers in any language, but it is important not just to pronounce the words, but to understand their meaning. Moreover, knowledge should come not from the head, but from the heart.

It is necessary to perform all the basic rituals and actions that accompany the reading of the prayer text. For example, special attention is paid to the sign of the cross and bow. These steps should not be performed in haste. It is recommended to turn to the Lord before the image; a candle is also lit. God is within us, therefore failure to follow the rules is not a sin, but they allow us to get closer to the Divine, strengthen our aspiration towards the Almighty, and strengthen our faith.

The prayer is said under certain conditions. It helps to understand the basics of religion. As a result, the knowledge of a believer deepens. Today, baptism is often performed in infancy. At this age, a new person cannot yet understand the basics of Christianity, but the prayer text is read by the godparents. They must know the words by heart.

The Lord's Prayer in French (Russian letters)

When the opportunity arises to move to another country, it is better to first turn to the Lord, reading foreign prayer words, but in Russian letters. This helps to develop an understanding of pronunciation features. If you immediately try to pronounce foreign prayer words, obvious mistakes may occur. Because of this, turning to God is done with the wrong message. This will not shorten the distance between the person praying and God.

Notre Per, ki o syo,

ke ton nom suá sanktifé,

ke ton ren ván,

ke ta volonté suá fet sur la ter com o sel;

don-nu ojurdui notre pan essanciel;

eh no nu les paz-antré dan lepreuve, me delivre-nu du malan.

Stress in Georgian always falls on the first syllable. those. Merme and Merme.

Not yet, unfortunately. But I think I can add at least a small part (names and lives of Georgian saints, churches and monasteries, Georgian icons, etc.). not very soon, but I’m already working on it.

If anyone from the fathers and brethren uses the above text of the small litany, written in Georgian in mkhedruli (in both posts), keep in mind the following. Typos have crept into the 3rd petition (“Most Holy, Most Pure...”), although the Cyrillic and Latin transliterations of these words are given correctly; Apparently, the author of the posts wrote transliterations from memory, and not from this text, otherwise she herself would have noticed errors: 1) in the word “Incorruptible” or “Immaculate” (c.-sl. Most Pure): it is written უხწნელისა (ukhtsnelisa), but it should უხ რ წნელისა (ukh r tsnelisa). 2) in the word “Mother of God”: it is written ღ მრ თისმშობელისა (gh mr tismshobelisa), but it should be ღ ვ თისმშობელისა (gh v tismshobelisa).
