Holy Apostle Timothy, Bishop of Ephesus (+ c. 80)
very quickly became one of the most popular religious movements of the first centuries . But along with sincere believers, people with unclean motives began to come to the meeting, thirsting for power and easy money. To resist them, the followers of Christ required considerable courage, devotion to God and love for neighbor. One of these Christians was the Apostle Timothy.
Day of Remembrance
The Apostle Timothy is remembered on February 4 . It is believed that it was on this day, around the year 80 of the first century, that he suffered martyrdom. In addition, he is venerated January 17 , the Day of the Council of the Apostles from 70.

Character of the birthday boy
Timofey loves noisy companies. He always has a lot of friends. He simply cannot live without communication. The bearer of this name is kind, he is not vindictive. He quickly forgives all insults.
Since early childhood, a boy with this name is soft and calm. He often hovers in dreams. Timofey's childhood is difficult. Because even having a father, he does not receive a male upbringing. All this happens due to the primacy of the mother. But even when the guy grows up and gets rid of excessive maternal care, he falls under another power (the power of his wife).
Because of his neat and handsome appearance, he always has many fans. But he chooses his life partner not by intelligence, but by beauty. Negative character traits include hypocrisy and a desire to deceive.

Apostle Timothy: how do we know about him?
His name is familiar to everyone who has read the Epistles of the Apostle Paul at least once, two of which are addressed to Timothy. The life and deeds of the Ephesian follower of Jesus Christ are described in several books of the New Testament:
- Acts;
- Epistle to the Romans;
- 1 and 2 Corinthians;
- Philippians;
- Epistle to the Colossians;
- 1 and 2 Timothy;
- Epistle to Philemon;
- Epistle to the Hebrews.
Holy Apostle Timothy, Bishop of Ephesus
Life of a Saint
The homeland of the Apostle Timothy was the city of Lystra, located in the Lycaon region (modern Turkey). He was raised in at least two cultures. His father was a Hellenic, and his mother and grandmother came from the Jewish people.
It is obvious that the father was not involved in the spiritual education of his son. Little Timothy learned about the qualities, laws and great plans of the true God from his grandmother Loida and mother Eunice.
Timofey and his grandmother. Harmens van Rijn Rembrandt, 1648
It often happens that people profess a religion only formally, only because it was inherited from their parents. But Eunice and Lois were not faithful to God only in words. This is what the Apostle Paul :
“I wish to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy,
bringing to mind your unfeigned faith, which formerly dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice; I’m sure it’s in you too.”
(2 Tim. 1:4,5)
The miracle performed by Paul in the homeland of the Apostle Timothy
Timothy's mother and grandmother became disciples of Christ after they heard the preaching of the Apostle Paul and Barnabas in their city. They realized that they had finally learned about the Messiah. A serious proof of the truth of the Good News was the miracle performed by Paul in Lystra. It is told about in Acts chapter 14. Paul healed a man lame from birth. Local residents, not accustomed to the real manifestation of the supernatural, decided that the gods themselves had descended to them. They took Paul for Hermes, the messenger of the gods, and Barnabas for Zeus.
Karel Dujardin (1622 - 1678) “Saint Paul healing a cripple in Lystra” 1663 Oil on canvas, 179 x 139 cm. Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam)
Enthusiastic fans decided to make sacrifices to the “gods”. However, the apostles opposed this, giving testimony about the true God, to whom alone belongs the glory for the healing of the lame. Then some townspeople turned to the truth. Among them were obviously Timothy's grandmother and mother, who, of course, would not worship people, but realized that they had learned the truth about the Messiah.
Soon Jews from other settlements came to the city. They turned the locals against the apostles, and they stoned Paul. The apostle survived and showed fearlessness, returning to the city and appointing elders for the congregation, after which he left the city with Barnabas.
In such difficult conditions, Christianity was born in Lystra. Timothy faced resistance to his beliefs from childhood, but at the same time saw the outstanding example of the apostles. He became especially close to Paul, who became his spiritual father. The apostle noticed in the young man a desire for goodness and holiness, meekness and God’s disposition towards him.
A few years later, Paul decided to visit Lystra again to strengthen the young church. To his joy, Timofey became not only an adult, but also a very virtuous man. In addition, all local Christians . Then Paul took him as a companion in his apostolic and missionary work.
Meaning of the name Timofey - spelling, popularity
The meaning of the name Timofey - spelling, popularity
If we talk about the popularity of the name Timofey, then at this period of time newborn babies are increasingly being called by it. Although literally 10-15 years ago only a few people chose it. What has changed during this time? This trend is due to the fact that now rarer names are in fashion, and young parents strive to name their child just that.
The meaning of the name Timofey - spelled out:
- T - this letter gives the owner of the name the ability to think differently from those around him, to notice various kinds of nuances and achieve his own. In addition, it affects health - at an older age a person may have problems with the gastrointestinal tract.
- And is a letter that gives harmony, which means that Timofey will always strive to live in harmony with his environment. He will do everything to make both him and his family comfortable. But there is a disadvantage to having this letter in the name. At the energetic level, she is responsible for straightforwardness, and not everyone likes this character trait.
- M - is responsible for Timofey’s ability to develop. In this regard, he is lucky; at any age he will be able to easily learn a new skill, and will do it very quickly and easily. This is probably why Timofeys do not hold on very tightly to work that does not bring them pleasure. They calmly give up everything and successfully realize themselves in something new.
- O - indicates a rich inner world, a person’s ability to sympathize, understand, and support. The ability to feel someone else's grief makes a person as attractive as possible in the eyes of those around him.
- F - is responsible for friendliness, self-confidence and self-confidence. This means that Timofey will always be surrounded by people who are positively disposed towards him, and what’s best is that he will boldly move towards his goals, without fear of difficulties.
- E - is responsible for the ability to express oneself. And Timofey does this well - he always knows what to say and where to say it, and where it is better to remain silent and keep his mouth shut. He knows how to appear the way his interlocutor wants to see him; a well-developed intuition helps him in this.
- Y is a fly in the ointment. She endows Timofeev with inconstancy. As a rule, this trait manifests itself when the owner of the name is tired - both mentally and physically. When his energy reserves are running low, Timofey can suddenly change his opinion to the diametrically opposite one, and begin to claim that it is exactly the right one. In such situations, conflicts and problems with the environment may develop.
Works of the Apostle Timothy for the benefit of the Church
Timothy adopted selfless love for people from Paul. Thus, he agreed to undergo a rather painful circumcision operation in order not to become a stumbling block for the Jews with whom they had to communicate on religious topics. Some modern believers accuse Paul of inconsistent behavior. In their opinion, Paul, and after him Timothy, were chameleons, ready to change their own principles in order to make Christianity more attractive to as many people as possible.
The “cutting” operation - where is the logic?
This point of view is based on the words of Paul from his letters, in which he condemns the followers of circumcision in the Christian environment. But the apostle does not condemn circumcision as a medical procedure and does not interfere in matters of personal conscience of fellow believers. It only says that circumcision is not necessary to maintain a good relationship with God and achieve eternal life. Therefore, his behavior was quite consistent:
“For, being free from everyone, I made myself a slave to everyone, in order to gain more:
to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win the Jews; to those under the law he was as one under the law, in order to gain those under the law;
for those who are strangers to the law - as one who is strangers to the law - not being alien to the law before God, but under the law of Christ - in order to win those who are strangers to the law;
He was like one who is weak to the weak, so that he might gain the weak. I became everything to everyone, in order to save at least some.
But I do this for the sake of the Gospel, so that I may be a partaker of it.”
(1 Corinthians 9:19-23)
Moreover, Paul and Timothy showed flexibility and made concessions in order not to offend the Jews with details of Christian teaching that were unusual for them. Respect for the conscience of others is also the responsibility of modern Christians, if this does not require transgressing God’s commandments .
Beloved Son
Timothy preached the Gospel in cities and villages, learning invaluable experience from St. Paul. This is how the apostle spoke about this in a personal letter to his “beloved son,” as he called Timothy:
“And you followed me in teaching, life, disposition, faith, generosity, love, patience,
in the persecutions and sufferings that befell me in Antioch, Iconium, Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and the Lord delivered me from them all.”
(2 Tim. 3:10,11)
Ephesus is called the vanity fair of Asia Minor. This city was drowning in luxury and wealth. But Timothy lived a modest life and did not use his authority and position to acquire earthly wealth, prestige or fame. Instead, he put doing God's will first in his life. This included active preaching of gospel truths and concern for the spiritual welfare of the congregations.
Medical advice for a young bishop
Seeing such zeal and devotion to the Lord God , Paul ordained Timothy as a deacon , elder, and in 65, bishop of the Ephesian Church, despite his youth.
Image of Timothy, 1st Bishop of Ephesus from the Nuremberg Chronicle by Hartmann Schedel, 1493
Timothy also set a wonderful example for those Christians who suffer from chronic illness and may therefore feel that their service to God is not as valuable as the service of their fellow believers in good health. Paul gave Timothy advice on how to alleviate his illnesses. And the fact that Timothy accepted these recommendations and continued to faithfully serve God may seem surprising.
Let us remember the case of the healing of a resident of Lystra who was lame from birth, performed by Paul. Why didn’t Paul heal Timothy, who was periodically ill? Clearly, Christ did not give Paul the gift of healing 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout his entire life. He couldn't heal himself either.
“From now on, drink more than just water, but use a little wine, for the sake of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”
(1 Timothy 5:23)
Isn't it a shame to know that your mentor healed any illness of other people and not be able to receive healing yourself? But Timothy did not stumble and did not leave the ministry. This still happens today, when life for some Christians is better than for others. Don't envy those who have received more of God's gifts.
Fables and false teachings: internal problems of the Church
External persecution was not the only problem threatening the existence of the Church. Other, no less serious threats came from within the congregation. Here is what Paul wrote to Timothy about them:
“I charge you therefore before God and our Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:
preach the word, be persistent in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and edification.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires they will heap up for themselves teachers, having itching ears;
and they will turn away their ears from the truth and turn to fables.
But be vigilant in everything, endure tribulations, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
(2 Tim. 4:1-5)
What fables and false teachings are we talking about? In the first century there was a very strong influence within the congregation of supporters of the doctrine of the immutability of the decrees of the Mosaic Law. They argued that without literal circumcision, keeping the Sabbath, or abstaining from unclean foods, salvation was impossible. There are religious groups with such ideas even today.
Timothy, following Paul, had to explain to fellow believers that the Law of Moses was very important, but it was a teacher to Christ. It was based on God's timeless principles, but Christians are not required to follow all of its 613 provisions.
Gnostics - who are they?
Another influential group within the congregation were the Gnostics.
Interesting fact
The word "Gnostics" comes from the Greek "knowledge". People who believed that they possessed special spiritual knowledge inaccessible to the majority called themselves this name.
The Gnostics created a syncretic teaching. They brought together ideas from various religious and philosophical systems:
- Jewish;
- Christian;
- pagan
Thus, under the pretext of striving for higher knowledge, they introduced alien and false elements into the Church.
Entrance to the Grotto of St. Paul, also known as the Cave of St. Paul and Thekla, Ephesus, Turkey
They composed fables (Greek "mythos") and genealogies. The Gnostics taught that our world was created by a god who stands at one of the lowest levels in the supernatural hierarchy, knows nothing about the main Deity of the Universe and is hostile towards him. But the Supreme God, the Ruler of the Universe, according to them, did not even know about the existence of people. Such a teaching devalues the entire system of Christian beliefs. After all, it implies that our very existence, as well as the eternal future, depends on a noble, but not omniscient and not omnipotent God.
Another teaching of the Gnostics was the assurance that the entire world was created from sinful matter. Therefore, our bodies themselves are prone to sin and it doesn’t matter how we behave: you can lead an immoral lifestyle, but the soul always remains holy and immaculate. It is difficult to come up with a more successful method of corrupting the Church.
Some Gnostics, on the contrary, strived for holiness, completely denying the natural needs of the body. They forbade marriage, eating meat, and generally leading a normal human life as an unambiguous evil.
This, of course, also led to stumbling, because such ideas implied that our Lord did not create us for a full and joyful life. In addition, such would-be philosophers denied the resurrection of the dead, arguing that only the soul would be saved, but the body, created from sinful matter, would not be saved.
It was with such arrogant false teachers, who considered themselves part of an elite spiritual club within the Church, that Timothy had to fight. And he did not give up, but courageously exposed any lies. In this he set an example for God's modern servants. And today, ideas similar to the teachings of the Gnostics have a huge number of supporters. It is sad that leaders of various faiths often follow their lead, not wanting to lose their flock.
In prison
In Hebrews 13:23, Paul mentions that Timothy appears to have been in prison. But this did not break his spirit. Timothy was Paul's authorized representative for various meetings. Thus, it was he who was sent by the apostle to help restore unity in the congregation of Corinth, which had split into several camps.
Gustave Doré Wood engraving. 1886 “Saint Paul, imprisoned, finishes his letter to the Ephesians and gives it to Tychicus (Ephesians 6:21-23). According to another version: Timothy is depicted next to Paul
In addition, Timothy was a real support for Paul in the most difficult moments of his life - during his imprisonment. While Paul was under arrest in Rome, his beloved disciple came to him with encouragement.
The name Timothy in the Saints
In the Saints, the anthroponym is recorded in each month (except October) 1-2 times, in February and June - three times. The spelling in church and civil documents is the same.
Meaning of the name
The Greek name Timothy translates as “one who worships God.”
It appeared in Rus' with the advent of Christianity. In colloquial speech the following diminutive noun forms are used: Tim, Tima, Timosha, Timokha, Timonya, Timofeyka.
Foreign language forms of the name are Timothy, Timotey, Tsimafey, Tymofy, Timoteo, Timoteus.
Main features
The main thing in Timofey is calmness and poise.
Character
The positive energy of the name gives Timothy many positive character traits. The strongest ones are restraint and equanimity. However, psychologist D. Zima believes that, despite the calm disposition, emotional fluctuations are still present. Timothys can be both cheerful and angry, but they know how not to advertise their state of mind, especially in a circle of unfamiliar people. Tim is characterized by prudence, which may seem like a desire to evade responsibility, but this is not so. Possessing intuition and insight, he takes time out in difficult situations to think about the current situation and make the right decision. In reality, Timofey is an executive and responsible worker, able to concentrate and act quickly.
Timofey loves to fantasize. Thanks to this quality, he manages to control himself: in order not to get irritated, a man secretly indulges in ambitious dreams, which only those closest to him know about.
Character flaws stem partly from his strengths. This:
- pedantry;
- closedness;
- stubbornness;
- unsociability.
As a rule, in unfamiliar companies, people with the name prefer to go into the shadows so as not to be visible. Only people who are in a close social circle can feel the reliability and emotionality of a friend. For this reason, Timosha has a limited circle of friends. But those around him are drawn to him: they are attracted by such qualities as culture, charisma and the ability to keep other people's secrets.
As for stubbornness, this is a relative disadvantage. Sometimes stubbornness is beneficial, helping you achieve your goal.
In family life, Timofey is an easygoing and caring husband, a loving father. His wife should be modest, without ambition, love cleanliness and order in the house.
Martyrdom
Timothy died in Ephesus. Once in the city there was a celebration on the occasion of the catagogium, a festival of idolaters who put on images of mythical creatures. They walked around the city holding idols and wooden sticks and performed shameless dances and obscene songs. Participants in the procession rushed at passers-by and even committed murder, as well as other lawlessness, thinking that they were honoring the pagan gods.

Seeing all this, Timothy, like the prophets of the Old Testament, became indignant and began to preach the truth about the only true God and Lord Jesus Christ. But the pagans did not repent. Instead, they brutally beat the apostle with their hands, feet and sticks, dragging him along the ground, and thus killed him.
Timothy died around 80 AD.
When Timothy was already dying, Christians found him. They carried him outside the city and after he gave up the ghost, they buried him in a place called Peony.
The meaning of the name Timofey is intuition, intelligence, morality
The meaning of the name Timofey is intuition, intelligence, morality.
The meaning of the name Timofey:
- Intuition is a well-expressed character quality among Timofeevs at any age. It is she who helps little name owners beg their parents for a delicious candy or toy at the right time. In adolescence, it helps to avoid awkward situations when communicating with peers. And when Timofey becomes an adult, intuition helps him achieve his goals. Sometimes it is she who becomes the reason that other people praise him. And all because a well-developed inner instinct makes him take on projects that others refuse. Intuition is superimposed on the ability to work, and as a result Timofey is a winner and triumphant.
- Intelligence is another pronounced quality of Timofeev’s character. From a very young age, the owner of the name learns and learns new things, and does it with great interest. In childhood, it may seem to parents that the boy himself does not know what he wants, because he constantly changes his hobby. But this happens only because Timofey is interested in different areas, and he simply does not have enough time to master everything that interests him. Therefore, there is no need to scold the child, but it is better to plan his schedule in such a way that he can attend as many lectures and classes that interest him as possible. If everything is done correctly, then adult Timofey will have a large store of knowledge, and, most importantly, will be able to use it correctly in life.
- Morality is an important concept for Timothy. He has his own moral principles and principles that he tries to follow. The adult owner of the name is a terrible truth-teller, does not tolerate lies and falsehood, so if one of his friends tries to lie to him or do something behind his back, he simply breaks off the relationship. But still, in some situations, Timofey may deviate a little from his moral principles if this will help achieve some goal or achieve certain results. True, there are necessary compelling reasons for this, and they should not harm either him or anyone from his circle.
Relics
In 356, by order of the Byzantine emperor Constance, the relics of Timothy were sent by Saint Artemius to Constantinople along with the remains of the apostles Luke and Andrew.

The treasures of the Christian temple were stolen in 1204 during the sack of Constantinople by the crusaders; most of the shrines are kept in the Basilica of St. Stamp in Venice (Italy). For a long time it was believed that the relics of the holy apostle rested in Rome.

However, on May 11, 1945, they were discovered by the priest Biagio d'Agostino in the Cathedral of the Italian city of Termoli in Molise during reconstruction work. It turned out that they had been here in the San Basso Cathedral since 1239.

There are also some of the holy relics in Russia. On May 10, 2009, she was taken to the capital of the Kalmyk Republic - the city of Elista. The decision to make such a gift for Orthodox Kalmyks was made by the Bishop of Termoli, Monsignor Gianfranco De Luca, after meeting Archbishop Zosima (Ostapenko) of Kalmykia.

Talisman stone, amulet for the name Timofey
The name Timofey is very extraordinary, with interesting energy, but if you carefully read our article, you probably realized that the owners of this letter code are kind-hearted, sometimes like little children. This means that they need protection. Which talisman stone or amulet suits the name Timofey most? The answer is a bright sapphire.
It is best to give it to a boy immediately after birth and try to keep it nearby all the time. This will make him a wiser and more reasonable person, and will help him make the right decisions in adulthood. But keep in mind that in order for a talisman stone to be a powerful obreg, it does not need to be worn over clothing and displayed. It is better if the sapphire is attached to a silver chain, or sew a bag for it from natural fabric, and put it in the pocket of Timofey’s clothes.
Portrait
The portrait by the early Irish artist Jan van Eyck is called "Timothy".
Interesting fact
On the “stone parapet” the artist left three “carved” inscriptions in three languages:
- in Greek - TγΜ.ωΟΕΟς;
- French -LÉAL SOVVENIR:
- Latin - Actu[m] an[n]od[omi]ni.1432.10.die ocobris.a.ioh[anne] de Eyck
The Greek inscription, although not very legible due to “traces of time,” is the most mysterious. The British artist and collector Charles Eastlake at the beginning of the 19th century deciphered it as the name Timothy. Presumably it refers to the Bishop of Ephesus and the scroll in his hands is the First Epistle to Timothy of the Apostle Paul.

The meaning of the name Timofey is
- Hobbies, talent - the owners of this name are very talented, and in many areas. Whatever Timofey undertakes in life, he will strive to do everything as best as possible. And since he has perseverance and the ability to self-educate, he easily learns everything new. Moreover, it is not particularly important for Timofey whether he chose a female or a male hobby. He can do modeling and design equally well, and at the same time knit or embroider in the evening.
- Profession and career are an important component of his financial stability. That’s why Timofey, from a very young age, strives to get a stable job with a high salary. He consciously does everything to ensure that his career goes up all the time. Timofey can achieve what he wants at any job, but he feels best where mental work is needed, and there is no need to communicate with a large number of people. “High positions”, which impose a lot of responsibility on a person, are categorically not suitable for Timofey. Owners of this name work best on a free schedule, with the opportunity to calmly express their thoughts and wishes, and create beautiful things. The ideal profession is jeweler.
- Business is something that has frightened Timofeev for a long time. They are afraid of excessive responsibility and for a long time do not dare to start their own business, although they often think about this. As a rule, only those names who have strong support from their relatives become successful businessmen. In such a tandem, they manage to build a profitable business that does not burden them.
How does God help through the prayers of the holy apostle
The Lord answers prayers addressed to Timothy in the following cases:
- lack of faith;
- combating false teachings;
- spiritual apathy;
- a desire to further explore and understand the Bible;
- doubts about the wisdom of God's commandments.
The beating of the Holy Apostle Timothy by his compatriots
Timothy could have chosen a pagan lifestyle, following the example of his father. Then he would be accepted as one of our own, without being persecuted or arrested. Instead, Timothy chose selfless service to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Paul and his beloved disciple showed what it means to be true Christians. Following them, we should not be indifferent when we encounter false teachings, immorality and delusions. If the first Christians had not brought the light of truth, despite the persecution and contempt of pagan peoples, then we would not have become Christians. Now we need to carry out this task.

The meaning of the name Timofey - the nature of the name, positive and negative traits, fate
The meaning of the name Timofey:
- The character of the name - the owner of such a letter code has a quite tolerable character, with its own advantages and disadvantages. True, he has more positive qualities, and what is also very good is that Timofey always admits the presence of negative traits in his character. Such truthfulness helps him win people over, because they understand that they are communicating with a realist who is unlikely to fuss and lie. It is the ability to admit his shortcomings that makes Timofey almost ideal in the eyes of others, and they try not to notice his minor offenses.
- Positive traits are sociability, sociability, determination, honesty and optimism. All these qualities are expressed as clearly as possible in Timofey’s character, and it is they that help him create a positive image.
- Negative traits : selfishness, maximalism, obstinacy. As you can see, there are not so many negative character traits that are clearly expressed. And they appear most often when relatives and friends extol Timothy too much, constantly praising his actions. In this case, the negative traits manifest themselves in full force and begin to harm the owner of the name. But if desired, they can still be “muffled.” Timofey, literally from childhood, should be praised exclusively for great achievements, and then, having matured, he will not consider himself better than other people.
- Fate - we can say that Timofey builds his destiny with his own hands. After all, his future depends on how he behaves and what decisions he makes. If he does not make decisions in a hurry and feels the support of loved ones, then he achieves a lot in life. He will live a completely happy, quiet life surrounded by people who love and support him in all his endeavors. If negative character traits appear more pronounced than positive ones, then fate will not be so simple. Periodically, Timothy will have to apologize for his actions and restore relationships with those he offended. Therefore, it is very important for the owner of this name to constantly suppress manifestations of his selfishness and stubbornness, to control his maximalism, and then he will be able to live a happy life.
