When Maximian summoned Saint Catherine again, he was convinced that neither imprisonment nor the fear of death had changed her thoughts. In a fit of rage, he ordered her to be wheeled, but an unknown force destroyed the instrument of torture. Both the emperor's wife and some of the Roman soldiers stood up for the martyr, but to no avail. The torture was followed by attempts to persuade the saint to renounce Christ. This continued until Catherine, who called herself the bride of Christ, herself laid her head on the chopping block.

According to legend, the body of the great martyr disappeared from the place of execution: it was allegedly picked up by angels and transferred to Mount Sinai, where three centuries later the monastery of St. Catherine. The saint’s relics remain there to this day.

Martyr Catherine of Petrograd (Arskaya) (1875–1937)

Daughter of a rich merchant. After the revolution, her husband and five children died of cholera and dysentery, and she herself barely escaped starvation. She became an active member of the Alexander Nevsky Brotherhood, which was engaged in spiritual education.
