Military prayers and conspiracies of the Cossacks of the Don Army

Origin of military prayers

In the old printed breviaries, published even before Nikon’s reforms, there are already established military rites. First of all, this is “the Canon of prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ and to all His saints, sung for the prince and for the people, when it comes from the city against the adversary that comes against us.” In the breviary of Metropolitan Peter Mogila (1646), known, among other merits, for his liturgical creativity, there is a military rite “Prayer singing for the Tsar and for the people, during the battle against the adversaries who come upon us.” These are just a few examples of military liturgical ranks; in fact, there were many more.

After Nikon’s reforms (1650-60), the breviary included two military rites: “The sequence of prayer songs sung to the Lord God during the battle against the adversaries who come upon us” and “The Prayer of His Holiness Callistos the Patriarch for the Emperor and his army.”

This collection of military prayers and rites was constantly replenished and enriched, primarily through prayers addressed to saints who were warriors during their lifetime. The Orthodox Church knows many such saints. These are Longinus Sotnik, Theodore Stratelates, Great Martyr George the Victorious, Dmitry of Thessaloniki, as well as Alexander Nevsky, Ilya Muromets, Dovmont of Pskov, Fyodor Ushakov and others.

Cossack conspiracies and rituals

In addition to, in fact, Orthodox prayers, among the Cossacks there were many rituals and conspiracies that were not so much of Orthodox as of folk origin.

For example, the prayer of the Don Cossacks (“Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner, and save me!”) was supposed to be read, according to modern researchers of traditional culture, with a sword drawn and making circles on horseback. The pace of the race kept increasing, and finally the Cossacks turned around and rushed towards the enemy like lava.

Back in the 19th century, folklorist Maikov published an old Cossack prayer prayer, which contains the following words: “There is a sea-ocean; on that sea-okiyan there stands a pillar, on that pillar stands the king, its height is from earth to heaven, and from east to west, and from south to north... Quiet all gunfire that I meet, St. Evangelist of Christ Luke, unfaithful people, my adversaries. Fall, iron, into your mother earth! You, birch, to your mother earth, and you, feathers, to your feathered bird, and the bird to bonnet and son, and the fish in the sea - from me, r. B. (name), always, now...” Already in the 20th century, during the Great Patriotic War, Cossacks kept the texts of prayers and spells in the pockets of their tunics or in the seams of their shirts, believing that this would save them from an enemy bullet. An example of such a conspiracy, published in Protsenko’s book “Spiritual Culture of the Don Cossacks”: “Lord, You are the court of the earth, accept my prayer, send Your strength, whoever strives for my destruction, let him stand like a pillar where Your strength passes. Amen."

Sometimes, in addition to the sacred text, the “protective” complex also included a linen bag with a handful of native soil.

These military conspiracies, prayers and customs bear the imprint of the deepest archaism, and are carefully passed down from generation to generation to this day.

Oh, oh, oh, don’t be afraid of me - Cossack prayer | Lyrics

  • Lyrics
  • Oh, oh, oh, don't be afraid of me
  • Cossack prayer

Recording from the concert on December 25, 2010 in the assembly hall of Nizhny Novgorod State University

A Cossack stood on the mountain - He prayed to God. For freedom, for the people I bowed low.

Chorus: Oh-sya, you-oh-sya, Don't be afraid of me. I won't touch you - don't worry. (2 times)

And the Cossack also asked for Truth for the people: If there is truth on earth, there will be freedom.

The Cossack asked for his friends - So that in a foreign land Greed and pride would bypass them.

So that wives will wait, and fathers and children, for those who are looking for the mother truth throughout the wide world.

The Cossack asked for blessings for the people, so that there would be bread and salt in peaceful villages.

So that blood would not flow at his father's threshold, So that he would not live unjustly - He prayed to God.

This is how that Cossack prayed for his native land, so that neither grief nor tears would touch it.

The Cossack asked God for Truth for the people. There will be truth on earth - There will be freedom.

Chorus: Oh, oh, oh, don't be afraid of me. There will be truth on earth - There will be freedom.

Also, Oysya, oh, don’t be afraid of me.

COSSACK SPAS... The superpowers of the Cossacks. (Excerpts from N. Torin's post)

This is the art of special combat of the Cossacks. This requires a special psychology and complete mastery of your consciousness...

And here there is a parallel with the ability of the Toltecs to control their body and mental qualities.

The roots of the struggle go back thousands of years, and all these centuries it has been improved and achieved such strength that it is unlikely that a reasonable person would believe what it is capable of. It is already beyond ordinary understanding...

Even in the twelfth century before the birth of Christ, under the name of the Dzhanians and Cherkasy, from the mouth of the Kuban, Don, Dnieper and Dniester, the Cossacks sailed on thirty large ships to help the besieged Troy... Since these memorable times, well-armed, desperate and skilled in battle, many Cossacks for centuries they kept the Persians and Medes, Greeks and Turks in fear... The strength of the Cossacks were the so-called “characterniks”, a special secret Cossack caste that owned the Cossack Savior, the amazing science of combat, and its symbol was the Ursa Major and the rejection of “annoyance”, then there are no intermediaries, no earthly power over oneself at the moment of battle except God. It was to Him that the characterist flew in spirit and thought during instant meditation - manu, whispering a secret prayer - Stos...

In this exalted state, time itself accelerated for him, and slowed down for the enemy; he could escape any blows and inflict mortal retribution on the enemy himself. In a cabin with many opponents, the character could so “bewitch” the enemies that they lost sight of him and exterminated each other in a frenzy. And the whirlwind of blows from his saber is so swift and strong that the victim seemed whole for a few moments, and then began to fall apart. At the sight of this, the others were seized with mystical horror, and they instantly “fainted” and lost their strength.

Savior is an endless steppe and a bottomless well of spirit! The character controlled space and time, mastered the secrets of hypnosis, mind reading, conspiracies, spells, protective prayers, he could “dissolve” in the grass in the middle of an open field, become invisible in the crown of a tree, merge with a horse, and neither eat nor drink for weeks; he feels his bullet: the back of his head gets cold, and the Cossack dodges it, seeing its flight.

In battle, those who mastered the techniques stayed in groups of fives together, which multiplied the result of their skill. Each one was sacredly responsible for a certain friend, that one for the next, and everything became a circle in the five with a single care and protection, a single strength and a single spirit, it became a single swift body, and... its flight was terrible! The main law in the top five is not to be afraid for yourself; they easily cut through any lava or enemy column, turned their horses and again cut through a corridor, like a clearing in the forest... Do not be afraid for yourself, but save the life of a friend, entrusting your life to the care of a comrade. If you think about yourself and fear only for yourself, you will perish and destroy others, and this is an unforgiven sin. There is no bond holier than fellowship! This is the ancient Russian law of the squad - “For your friends”! And now I’ll practically show you what it is...

From Yuri Sergeev’s book “Prince’s Island”:

“Egor took the fin I had saved from the bench, rolled up his linen shirt on his left sleeve above the elbow and suddenly slashed the sharp fin across the skin between the elbow and wrist. Blood gushed onto the previously laid oilcloth. He waved the knife over the wound again, and the blood subsided. He waved it a third time and wiped the blood from his hand with a handkerchief, walking around those sitting and showing his hand... A fresh pink scar burned on it, the wound had healed. Lebedev even touched the cut area with his fingers and shook his head in surprise. He saw Bykov in battle and stopped marveling at his skill, but this “trick” shocked him... Meanwhile, Yegor loaded his “TT” and handed it to Solnyshkin, went to the opposite wall of the hall, upholstered with mattresses.

- Shoot me!

“You’ll be fooled,” the big man grinned displeasedly, “at this distance I can knock off a coin with a pistol.” I won't!

- Shoot! - Lebedev ordered and carefully stared at Yegor, watching his movements. He noticed Bykov’s numbness, something invisible was happening with his slightly swaying body, and so he said again:

- Shoot, but not at the head... Solnyshkin aimed at the right shoulder and gently pressed the trigger. Yegor relaxed in that instant, mentally read the Stos prayer and felt the rise of body and spirit. He looked at Solnyshkin calmly and saw grandfather Buyan in his place, forcing him to shoot himself for the first time with a carbine. Yegor comprehended Solnyshkin's fear and confusion at that moment, for he had gone through something similar in childhood... but what a delight it was when, having learned from his grandfather, he boldly stood under Buyan's gun barrel and saw a lead bumblebee flying at him... and with his power he rejoiced over the blind bullet , walking away from her and following her with his eyes...

Finally, Solnyshkin made up his mind, and Bykov saw how slowly his finger presses the trigger, how the broken spring languidly fires and the firing pin creeps, hits the primer, the gunpowder quietly ignites and strains the bullet out... It flies, barely rotating, and during its flight you can dodge a hundred times ... Yegor sees her already very close, sees Irina slowly getting up with horror in her eyes, there is a bullet at arm's length, he staggered slightly to the left, hearing the bullet rustling like a mouse, gnawing the fabric and cotton wool of the mattress and piercing the brick with a long knock...

Lebedev saw the almost imperceptible movement of Bykov’s body during the shot itself, it swung like a pendulum, letting the bullet pass by... The roar of the shot, the click of the bullet on the brick and Irina’s scream merged together for everyone, but Bykov stood just as imperturbably, there was no blood on his shirt and no signs of defeat was. He asked quietly again:

- Shoot in the chest, in a series, three times...

Shots rang out, and Yegor stepped away from the wall unharmed; four holes with torn pieces of cotton opened in a cluster in the mattress behind him. Solnyshkin looked at the gun and Yegor in bewilderment and muttered:

- Witchcraft-oh-oh!

- No! - responded Bykov, - this is the Cossack Savior, and he is from God, not sorcerers’ fun... And in order to finally convince you of the power of these techniques, I will show the highest limit of the character. He quickly attached a clean sheet of paper to the mattress with needles and took two steps towards Solnyshkin:

- Shoot at the center of the sheet past me.

He stood with his left side to him, closing his eyes and whispering a special prayer to grandfather Buyan, hearing the growing howl of the shot and turning his head sharply to the left, he saw a flying bullet... He quickly threw the palm of his right hand at it, clenched his fist and, in order to stop its terrible energy, accompanied the flight with her hand, slowing him down and squeezing the iron of her fist more and more powerfully... She pulled her hand behind her and surrendered... warming her from the inside...

No one heard the click of the bullet and no one noticed anything, Bykov’s movements were so lightning fast. He exhaled sharply and opened his fist. Everyone jumped up in wild bewilderment and screaming, looking in fascination at the bullet in his hand and at the virgin sheet of paper...

“I can take a bullet with my chest and I did it, but a big bruise remains, and I need to train you.” I will teach you a special, camouflage, unknown to the enemy, methods of rapid fire attacks, one of them is the Roll, we recently tested it on the Germans and had no losses... I will teach you how to heal yourself and kill the enemy with your bare hands, I will teach you everything you can perceive. But before each lesson, you must devote yourself to a special Cossack prayer in order to comprehend space and time through it and ask the Lord himself for strength to defend the Motherland and retaliate against enemies... If He hears you and you are worthy of His mercy, then you will become invulnerable to worldly weapons, and your body will move faster than thought, and maybe even light... The Savior punishes the enemy and heals the friend. Now I will show his good side... Merciful Savior... Ilya Ivanovich, go to the carpet!

- For what?

- Go, go... now undress to the waist.

“Just don’t shoot at me,” Okaemov grinned, pulling his shirt over his head.

“Look carefully,” Bykov pointed at Ilya’s back, turning him, “here is the entrance hole from the bullet and it sits in front under the lower rib.”

“He’s been sitting there for ten years,” Okaemov nodded affirmatively.

- I told you that an operation is needed.

“I told you, but I don’t have time to stay in the hospital.”

“Put your hands on your belt and don’t move, be patient,” Yegor’s strong fingers ran along his ribs, and Okaemov twitched from the tickling, warm goosebumps covered his open body, and it swayed in a light sleep. Suddenly Bykov pulled back the skin, sharply pressed his fingers on the white nodule, and it burst like a boil. A stream of black blood flowed from the hole, Yegor whispered a prayer, tightly squeezing the edges of the wound and swaying himself... And like a magician he spoke loudly; - All! Get dressed... Here, take this as a souvenir.

Ilya Ivanovich looked in bewilderment at the wet dark bullet in his palm; the skin on his side was slightly raw, but no blood flowed. And Egor said:

“Then you’ll seal it, but nothing will happen anyway...”
