Many Orthodox Christians not only heard, but also bowed before the face of Saint Parthinius. During his lifetime, he performed miracles that continue to happen even after his death.

Life of a Saint

The Orthodox Saint Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsaki, was born in Melitopol. His father was a believer and served as a deacon in the church. The boy was not literate. Due to poverty, his parents did not have the opportunity to teach him to write or read.

But despite this, the boy was able to assimilate God’s Scripture at the liturgies, which he never missed. He was unusually kind and inquisitive. At the same time, he really enjoyed fishing. In everyday life, at every opportunity, I tried to help the poor and people in need.

From the age of 18 he was engaged in healing, including the ability to cast out demons and perform real miracles that no one could explain. When such acts became known in the area and reached Bishop Philip, then the bishop himself decided to help the young man receive a normal education. Thanks to this, Parthenius was able to preach the faith among the pagans.

As a result, more and more people began to believe in the Almighty. One day, together with an assistant, the saint found a stone that was very convenient for erecting a throne in the temple. He ordered an assistant to process the stone and take it away for the construction of the church. The demons got angry and with their dark forces overturned the cart. She fell on the charioteer and killed him with her weight.

Thanks to his deep prayer, Parthenius was able to revive the charioteer. There were quite a few miracles and exorcisms of demons from Orthodox believers.

Venerable Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsaki

Saint Parthenius lived during the reign of Constantine the Great (306–337). His father Christodoulus was a deacon in Melitopol on the Hellespont. Parthenius did not receive an education, but he listened attentively to the reading of the Holy Scriptures in church and from a young age tried to live according to its commandments.

Parthenius was a fisherman, caught and sold fish, distributing everything he earned to the poor and leaving nothing for himself. His mercy became known in those places, and the Bishop of Melitopol, Filitus, ordained him a priest against his will, instructing him to travel around the diocese to communicate with believers. The grace of God bore fruit in him abundantly with miracles and healings. Having once met on the way a man whose eye had been knocked out by a bull with a blow from its horn, he put the eye back in place and healed it. Another time, Parthenius, with a single sign of the cross, healed a woman from an incurable disease - cancer. When a mad dog rushed at him, the saint blew on the beast - and it fell dead.

Seeing such evidence of Divine favor towards him, Metropolitan Askal of Cyzicus ordained him Bishop of Lampsacus - this city was still in idolatry.

Through fasting, prayers, inspired speeches and an evangelical lifestyle, the saint managed to convert the city to Christianity. Having visited the court of St. Constantine, he obtained permission to destroy pagan temples and received the necessary money for the construction of the temple. When, in order to complete the construction, it remained to bring a large stone for the holy throne, an envious demon possessed the bulls during transportation: they carried and crushed the driver. Then the saint offered up a fiery prayer to the Lord - and the victim came to life.

Saint Parthenius was a loving father and trustee of his city. He healed any disease without neglect, to the great misfortune of the doctors who were left without work. Just as darkness flees before light, demons disappeared at its very appearance. Once, when he powerfully expelled a demon from one poor man, the evil spirit prayed to him: “Give me a place where I could stay in anticipation of the Last Judgment, allow me at least to enter the pigs” (cf. Matthew 8: 31) . “It’s impossible,” answered the saint. “But I will give you another person if you leave this unfortunate man.” - “Who?” - "Me. Come in and live in me!” At these words, the evil spirit fled as if scorched by fire, shouting: “How can I enter the house of God? Oh, great is the power of Christians!”

One day Saint Parthenius went to Heraclius, the metropolis of Thrace, and found the local bishop on his sick bed. God revealed to him that the real cause of the illness was greed. “Get up,” he then said to the patient, “it is not a physical illness that gnaws at you, but a mental illness. Give to the poor what you have taken from them - and you will recover.” The bishop realized his mistake and offered all his wealth to Parthenius to distribute to those in need. “No,” the man of God refused, “you must do this, for God gives you the strength to give to the poor what is due to them.” Then the metropolitan asked to be taken to the church of St. Glyceria, the patroness of the city, and there he distributed his wealth among the needy who had gathered in the church. Three days later he recovered.

In Irakli, Saint Parthenius also healed other sick people and blessed the fields, accurately predicting the harvest. Saying goodbye to the metropolitan, he informed the primate about his own imminent death and named the name of his successor.

Returning to Lampsak, he soon reposed, leaving his flock as a legacy of the fragrance of his miracles and the example of his life. Having learned about the death of the saint, the bishops of all the surrounding cities hastily came to the funeral to honor Saint Parthenius and dedicate ardent works of mercy to God.

The icon of St. Parthenius can be found in every church. It is necessary to light candles in front of the face, and only after that begin to read the prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, do not allow vanity, self-love, sensuality, negligence, anger to dominate me and snatch me away from Your love. O Lord, my Creator, all my Hope! Do not leave me without an inheritance in blissful eternity; do it, and I too will follow Your holy example. Grant me this purity of spirit, this simplicity of heart, which make us worthy of Your love. To You, O my God, I lift up my soul and heart, do not allow Your creation to perish, but deliver me from the greatest and only true evil - sin. Grant, Lord, that I may endure with the same patience the anxieties and sorrows of my soul as I joyfully accept the pleasures of my heart. If You want, Lord, you can cleanse and sanctify me. So I surrender myself to Your goodness, asking to destroy from me everything that is contrary to You and join me to the host of Your chosen ones.

God bless you!

Ikos 10

Working with all your zeal to the Heavenly King, you have preserved true spiritual freedom, even more so yourself, as you have appeared in a royally sacred manner, all corruptible things I have corrected this world.
