Psalm 20 “Lord, in Your strength the king will rejoice”

Text of prayer Psalm 20

In Church Slavonic

Psalm to David 1 Lord, the king will rejoice in your strength and will greatly rejoice at your salvation. 2 You gave him the desire of his heart and took away his will from his lips. 3 Because he preceded you with a blessed blessing, you placed a crown of honorable stone on his head. 4 I asked you for food, and you gave me the length of days forever. 5 Velia, the glory of his salvation, sheds glory and majesty upon him. 6 For give him a blessing forever, make him happy with your face. 7 As a king trusts in the Lord, and by the mercy of the Most High he is not moved. 8 Let your hand be against all your enemies; let your right hand be against all who hate you. 9 Just as he places them like a cave of fire in the blink of an eye of your face, so the Lord will put me to shame with his wrath and put out their fire. 10 You will destroy their fruit from the earth and their descendants from the sons of men. 11 Yako evades Ty's evil by thinking about advice cannot even be invented. 12 As if I lay the spine, prepare their face in your abundance. 13 Rise up, O Lord, into your strength, let us sing and sing of your strength.

In Russian

Psalm of David 1 Lord, in your strength the king will rejoice and rejoice greatly over your salvation. 2 You gave him the desire of his heart, and what his lips asked, you did not deprive him. 3 Because you met him for his goodness, you placed a crown of precious stones on his head. 4 He asked you for life, and you gave him long life forever and ever. 5 Great is his glory in your salvation; you will bring glory and splendor upon him, 6 Because you will bless him forever and ever, you will make him glad in your presence. 7 For the king trusts in the Lord, and by the mercy of the Most High he will not be shaken. 8 Let your hand reach out to all your enemies, let your right hand find all who hate you. 9 For you will make them like a fiery furnace at the moment of your appearing: the Lord in His wrath will knock them down, and the fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their fruit from the earth and their seed from among the sons of men. 11 For they have done you evil; conceived plans that they cannot carry out. 12 Because you turn them back, you will direct the remaining arrows into their faces. 13 Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength! We will sing and sing your strength.

Psalter. Kathisma 20

KATHISMA TWENTIETH.

Psalm 143.

Psalm to David, to Goliath.

1 Blessed is the Lord my God, who trains my hands to fight, and my fingers to fight. 2 My mercy and my refuge, my Protector and my Deliverer, my Defender, and in Him I have trusted: put my people under me. 3 Lord, what is man that you knew him? Or the son of man, why do you count him? 4 Man is like vanity: his days pass away like a shadow. 5 Lord, bow down the heavens and come down and touch the mountains, and they will rise up. 6 Flash the lightning, and make me a wife; send forth your arrows, and make me tremble. 7 Send down Your hand from on high, wash me away, and deliver me from many waters, from the hand of the strange children, 8 whose mouth speaks vanity, and their right hand is the right hand of unrighteousness. 9 O God, I will sing a new song to You, in the psalter of ten strings I will sing to You, 10 Who gives salvation to the king, Who delivered David His servant from the fierce sword. 11 Deliver me, and pluck me from the hand of the strange sons, whose lips speak vanity, and their right hand is the right hand of wickedness. 12 And their sons were like new plants planted in their youth. Their daughters are enriched and adorned, like a temple. 13 Their storehouses are full, they vomit from this into this, their sheep are prolific, multiplying in their goings, their oxen are thick. 14 There is no fall for the stronghold, below the passage, below the cry in their stacks. 15 Please the people, which is what this is. Blessed are the people, even the Lord is their God.

Psalm 144.

Praise be to David.

1 I will exalt You, O my God, my King, and I will bless Your name forever and ever. 2 I will bless You every day and praise Your name forever and ever. 3 The Lord is great and greatly praised, and His greatness has no end. 4 Generation and generation will praise Your works and proclaim Your power. 5 They will proclaim the splendor of the glory of Your holiness and tell of Your wonders. 6 And they will speak of Your terrible power and Your greatness. 7 They will regurgitate the memory of the abundance of Your goodness and will rejoice in Your righteousness. 8 The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in mercy. 9 The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are upon all His works. 10 Let all Your works be confessed to You, O Lord, and Your worship bless You. 11 They will proclaim the glory of Your kingdom, and proclaim Your power, 12 Tell the sons of man Your power, and the glory of the splendor of Your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is the kingdom of all ages, and your dominion is in every generation and generation. The Lord is faithful in all His words and Holy in all His deeds. 14 The Lord strengthens all those who fall down and raises up all those who are cast down. 15 The eyes of all trust in You, and You give them food in due season. 16 You open Your hand and perform good pleasure in every living creature. 17 The Lord is righteous in all His ways and honorable in all His deeds. 18 The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. 19 I will do the will of those who fear Him, and I will hear their prayer and save them. 20 The Lord preserves all those who love Him and consumes all sinners. 21 My mouth shall sing the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless His holy name forever and ever.

Psalm 145.

Alleluia, Haggea and Zechariah.

1 Praise the Lord, my soul. 2 I will praise the Lord in my life; I will sing to my God even as I am. 3 Do not trust in princes, in the sons of men, for in them there is salvation. 4 His spirit will depart and return to its land. On that day all his thoughts will perish. 5 Blessed is the God of Jacob, his Helper, whose trust is in the Lord his God, 6 who made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, keeping the truth forever, 7 bringing judgment to the wronged, I give I give food to the hungry. The Lord will decide those who are chained. 8 The Lord makes the blind wise. The Lord raises up the downtrodden. The Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord protects strangers; he will accept the orphan and the widow, and destroy the way of sinners. 10 The Lord your God will reign forever in Zion, forever and ever.

Psalm 146.

1 Praise the Lord, for the psalm is good. May praise be sweet to our God. 2 The Lord builds Jerusalem; He will gather together the scatterings of Israel. 3 Heal the brokenhearted and oblige their contrition. 4 Count the many stars and name them all. 5 Great is our Lord, and great is His strength, and His understanding is without number, 6 Accept the meek Lord, and humble sinners to the ground. 7 Begin to confess to the Lord, sing to our God on the harp. 8 To him who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who grows grass and grain on the mountains for the service of man, 9 who gives their food to livestock, and to the chicks of corvids who call upon Him. 10 He does not delight in the strength of his bones, but he delights in the hair of men. 11 The Lord delights in those who fear Him and in those who trust in His mercy.

Who can stand against the face of His filth? 7 He sends out His word, and I fail, His spirit dies, and the waters flow out. 8 Proclaim your word to Jacob, your righteousness and destiny to Israel. 9 Thou shalt not do this to every tongue, and show them not thy destiny.

Psalm 151.

This psalm is especially written by David, and outside the number of 150 psalms, you are always fighting against Goliath.

He was small among my brothers and the youngest in my father’s house, a shepherd of my father’s sheep. My hands have created an organ, and my fingers have formed a psalter. And who will tell my Lord? The Lord Himself will hear. He himself sent his angel, and took me from my father’s sheep, and anointed me with his anointing oil. My brothers are good and great, and the Lord has not been pleased with them. I died to meet the foreigner, and their idols cursed me. And I pulled the sword from him, beheaded him, and took away the reproach from the children of Israel.

According to the 20th kathisma, the Trisagion of Our Father: Also troparia, tone 8:

You are the fulfillment of all good things, O my Christ, fill my soul with joy and gladness, and save me, for I am the One who is Most Merciful.

Glory: Even though I have sinned, O Christ my Savior, before You, do I know no other God than You, but I dare in Your goodness, turning to accept me, Compassionate Father and Only Begotten Son and Holy Soul Hey, like the prodigal son, save me.

And now: We know no other refuge and warm intercession than You, for we have the boldness of those who were born of You, O Lady, help and save me, Your servant.

Lord, have mercy (40) and prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ my God, have mercy on me, a sinner, and forgive me, your unworthy servant, for how much I have sinned throughout my entire life, and even to this day, and even if I have sinned as a man. x, my sins are voluntary and involuntary, in deed and word, out of my mind and thoughts, out of co-admiration and inattention, and much of my laziness and neglect. If I have sworn in Your name, or have sworn falsely, or have blasphemed thoughts, or have reproached someone, or slandered, or been sad, or in wicked anger, or have stolen, or committed fornication oh, or I lied, or secretly poisoned myself, or a friend approached me and despised him, or my offended and bitter brothers, or standing by in prayer and psalmody, my evil mind went around the evil one, or rather enjoyed myself, or laughed madly, or sacrilegiously with verbs, or became vain, or proud, or saw vain kindness and was deceived by it , or the ridiculous one mocked me. Even though I was careless about my prayer, or did not keep the commandments of my spiritual father, or idle talk, or did other evil things, this is all I have done in these deeds, which I remember below. Have mercy, Lord, and forgive us all, so that I may fall asleep and rest in peace, singing, blessing, and glorifying You, with Your Beginning Father and with Your Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.

History of writing

The creation story and text of Psalm 20 are closely intertwined with Song 19, in which King David asks the Lord for help and support in the fight against his enemies. With the words of the 20th Psalm, we thank the Lord for his help and intercession. Only with God's help and providence was he able to defeat his enemies and the enemies of the Lord - the Ammonites, who had been fighting the Jews for centuries. King David rejoices and celebrates his victory, shows his love for the Lord and expresses hope that the Lord will continue to help and protect him.

Interpretation

The hymn of thanksgiving for Psalm 20 exists in several translations, but the meaning of the verses remains the same. The interpretation is given for each verse separately:

  • Verses 4-6: The favor and blessing of the Lord gave David unprecedented strength, longevity and greatness;
  • Verse 13 is praise to the Lord.
  • Verse 2: says that the Lord heard David's prayer;
  • Verse 3 – The Lord granted the king’s request and gave him victory;
  • Verses 7-12. David hopes that the Lord will not abandon him and protect him from future enemies;
  • Verse 1. King David rejoices in the omnipotence of the Lord and His victory over the old enemy;

In Jewish prayer

The 70 words in this psalm may refer to the 70 years of exile between the first and second temples or, as suggested in the Zohar, to the 70 cries of pain associated with the birth of a child.[2] It was added to daily prayer after the loss of the second temple to symbolize the dark period before the construction of the third temple.[3]

It is used in Jewish prayer in several ways:

  • The psalm is read in its entirety as part of daily prayer (except Shabbat, Yom Tov, Rosh Chodesh, Chol Hamoed, Tisha B'Av, Hanukkah, Purim, Shushan Purim, the 14th and 15th of Adar I, and the days before Yom Kippur and Passover). In this context it is known as Lamenatzeyah
    (the first word of the Hebrew psalm) and is recited between Ashrei and Uva Letziyon near the end of Shacharit.
  • Verses 2 and 10 are part of the first paragraph of the long Tachanun read on Mondays and Thursdays.[4]
  • Verse 10 is the 11th verse of V'hu Rachum in Pesukei Dezimra,[5] is the last verse of Yehi Kivod in Pesukei Dezimra,[6] is found in Uva Lezion,[7] is the second of two verses read as an introduction to Maariv ,[8] and is part of Havdalah.[9]
  • It is also considered appropriate to read during times of stress, such as childbirth.[2]

Psalm No. 139.

(1) The leader [of the musicians]. Song of David. G-d! You tested me and recognized me. (2) You know when I sit down and when I get up, you understand my thoughts from afar. (3) Whether I am on the road or at rest, You surround [me], all my paths are known to You. (4) For there is not yet a word in my tongue, but You, G-d, already know it perfectly. (5) You embrace me from behind and from before, and lay Your hand on me. (6) Knowledge is hidden from me - it is high, I cannot comprehend it! (7) Where can I go from Your spirit, where can I flee from Your face? (8) If I rise to heaven - You are there. If I go to the grave, you will be there too. (9) If I fly on wings like the dawn, if I move to the edge of the sea - (10) and there Your hand will lead me, Your right hand will hold me. (11) Shall I say: “Only darkness will hide me, the night will surround me with darkness.” (12) But even the darkness will not obscure You, but the night is as bright as the day [before You]: as is the darkness, so is the light. (13) For You formed my reins, You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. (14) I give glory to You, for I am wonderfully made. Your creations are marvelous, and my soul is fully aware of this. (15) My essence is not hidden from You, for I was created in secret, woven in the depths of the earth. (16) Thy eyes saw my embryo; In Your book everything is written: the days created for me are all one for Him. (17) How dear are Your thoughts to me, O God, how powerful are their principles! (18) I will begin to count them - they are more numerous than sand; even if I stay awake all my life, I will be with You. (19) Oh, that You, O All-Powerful One, would strike the villain! The bloodthirsty would move away from me! (20) They exalt You wickedly; Your enemies extol [You] in vain. (21) Is it not those who hate You, O God, that I hate, and those who rebel against You that I fight against? (22) I hate them with complete hatred: they have become my enemies. (23) Test me, O God, know my heart. Test me, and find out my thoughts, (24) and see, if I am on a perishable path, then guide me on the path of eternity.

Psalm No. 20 (כ)

(1) The leader [of the musicians]. Song of David. (2) May G‑d answer you in the day of trouble, and may the name of the Almighty [G‑d] Jacob strengthen you. (3) May He send you help from the sanctuary and may He support you from Zion. (4) He will remember all your offerings, your burnt offerings will be reduced to ashes forever. (5) He will give you according to your heart's desire; He will fulfill all your plans. (6) We will rejoice in Your salvation, in the name of our Almighty we will raise our banners. May G-d fulfill all your requests. (7) Now I know that God has saved His anointed. He answers him from the heavens of His saints with the power of His saving right hand. (8) Some rely on [their] chariots, others on horses, but we mention the name of G‑d, our Almighty. (9) They bowed down and fell, but we stood up and rose (10) God, save us! May the Lord answer us on the day when we cry.

Every day it is customary to read a chapter, the serial number of which corresponds to the age of the Lubavitcher Rebbe SHLITA King Moshiach:

Psalm No. 137.

(1) By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat and wept, remembering Zion. (2) On the willows, in the midst of it, we hung our harps. (3) For there those who captivated us demanded hymns from us, and those who mocked us demanded joy: “Sing to us from the songs of Zion!” (4) How can we sing the song of God in a foreign land? (5) If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand become numb! (6) May my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem at the head of my joy! (7) Remember, O God, the day of Jerusalem to the children of Edom, who said: “Destroy it, destroy it to the ground!” (8) O daughter of Babylon, doomed to ruin! Happy is the one who rewards you according to what you have done to us. (9) Happy is he who takes and dashes your babies against a rock!

Psalm No. 138.

(1) [Song] of David. I will thank You with all my heart, before the mighty I will sing Your praises. (2) I will bow towards the Temple of Thy holiness and will give thanks to Thy name for Thy mercy and for Thy truth, for Thou hast magnified Thy word above all Thy name. (3) On the day when I cried, You answered me, instilling cheerfulness into my soul. (4) All the kings of the earth will thank You, O God, when they hear the words of Your mouth. (5) And they will sing to the ways of God, for great is the glory of God. (6) For God is high, but he sees the humble and punishes the proud from afar. (7) If I get into trouble, You will give me vitality, You will stretch out Your hand to the fury of my enemies, Your right hand will save me. (8) God will complete it for me! Your mercy, O God, endures forever; do not forsake the work of Your hands.

Psalm No. 120.

(1) Song of Ascension. I cried out to G‑d in my trouble, and He answered me. (2) God, deliver my soul from lying lips, from an evil tongue. (3) What will the evil tongue give you and what will add to you? (4) [After all, he is like] the sophisticated arrows of a hero, with burning firewood coals. (5) Woe to me that I live in a foreign land near Meshech, I dwell among the tents of Kedar. (6) My soul lived long with those who hated the world. (7) I am peaceful, but as soon as I speak, they [immediately] go to war.
