What is sodomy in the history of sin and in the modern world?

Duty or right?

The owner of a male dog must be fully aware that the main costs (organization of the birth process and the rehabilitation period) fall on the owner of the bitch, so his interests must be taken into account.

Many owners believe that if there are less than five puppies in the litter, then giving one as payment is an unreasonably high price. If, for example, four puppies were born, then the owner of the male dog receives no more than 75% of the cost of the maintenance puppy, if there are three - 50% and two - 25%.

Important! At the birth of one kitten, the owner of the male dog receives nothing.

All nuances must be discussed before mating. But the owner of the dog has the right to take away the maintenance puppy or take monetary compensation.

How to confess the sin of Sodom

Such an expression as “Sodomian” appeared from the name of the town of Sodom, where this vice began to flourish back in the time of Abraham, and the power of its enslavement of the townspeople reached such an extent that in order to seek the satisfaction of their lust, the townspeople did not even neglect violence, and also coercion. The limit of their depravity and madness was the desire to abuse God's messengers.

All these ongoing events filled the cup of patience of the Almighty to the top and the Lord’s wrath descended on the city of sinners, destroying it with fire and sulfur rain and hiding it forever under the waters of the Dead Sea.

Today, it is customary to interpret the expression “sodom” as a definition that denotes various types of sexual perversions. What refers to the sin of Sodom:

  • pedophilia;
  • masturbation;
  • homosexuality;
  • bestiality;
  • as well as heterosexual contacts of a perverted nature.

In other words, this sin in the Orthodox Christian religion means any kind of non-vaginal sexual intercourse, which subsequently does not lead to the birth of a child.

Fight against sodomites

For centuries, the authorities have been fighting against depraved, immoral people. The sin of Sodom was felt by the inhabitants of Rus' in the 15th century, when the sodomites practically seized power in the state, taking the post of metropolitan and approaching the tsar. The great ascetic St. Joseph of Volotsky came to his defense and through his prayers the sodomites were overthrown. As this threat spread, sexual deviants were prosecuted and laws against child molesters, i.e. pedophiles, continue to be in place today. But there are also necrophiles, gerontophiles, zoophiles, etc.

Types of tyrant bosses

There are three types of tyrant leaders:

  • The director is the father. This type has an unbalanced temperament and a quick temper. Such a boss is prone to frequent uncontrollable outbursts of anger. However, it also has positive features. He is respected as the undisputed leader. The director-father is able to solve the problems of his subordinates, punish and reward them at his own discretion. For this they forgive him a lot, considering him a benefactor.
  • Psychopathic sadist. This type of boss is much more dangerous than the first. These are classic tyrants who bully their subordinates. Sadistic psychopaths humiliate their subordinates not only in a fit of anger. They do this purposefully, systematically, getting true pleasure from it. Such a tyrant boss is a real despot and tyrant.

  • The woman is a tyrant. This type is the most dangerous. As a rule, a tyrant woman is a very insidious and vindictive person. Bosses of this type are, as a rule, lonely and unclaimed as women. Therefore, they compensate for the gaps in their personal lives with power in the workplace. The tyrant woman sublimates the unspent sexual energy into terror, asserting herself through the humiliation of her subordinates.

Priests about the sin of Sodom

The Holy Fathers believe that the Lord's mercy is capable of radiating to all Orthodox Christians without any exceptions. The Almighty loves each of his children equally and provides the same chances for realizing their sinful nature and receiving pardon.

And, in order to cope with this sinful abyss, which alienates the soul from the Great Divine Trinity, the believer himself will have to make a difficult decision and turn to a priest for help in the temple, who will explain how to correctly confess for sinful addictions.

However, it should be remembered that before confessing the sins of Sodom, one should hate this sinful act and completely get rid of such a scourge. And the Jesus Prayer will help you win victory over harmful tendencies, because this is the only way to heal your spiritual essence. At the same time, harmful thoughts and fornication will forever free the creature, but only if the Orthodox believer begins to regularly attend church, attend confessions and sincerely pray with all his heart and offer grace to the Creator.

May the Lord protect you!

The term “sin of Sodom” has long migrated from the Torah into everyday speech. Its interpretation is broad and multifaceted: from inappropriate sexual behavior to “sinful” thoughts.

What meaning does the science of Kabbalah give to the sin of Sodom? I think we should figure this out, because whether we want it or not, the Torah was written by Kabbalists.

What is the sin of Sodom

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah takes us back to the early period of Jewish history, long before the people of Israel settled in the Promised Land. The ancestors of the Jews led a semi-nomadic lifestyle. They traded with their neighbors and roamed the Middle East in search of new pastures for their livestock.

Their leader at that time was a man named Abraham. As the Bible tells us, Abraham, at the direction of God, left Mesopotamia and moved to Canaan. There he and his nephew Lot took up cattle breeding.

One day, a conflict arose between the shepherds of Abraham and Lot over the right to use pastures. And in order not to quarrel, Abraham suggested splitting up. So Lot ended up in the city of Sodom.

Nowadays, this place is a barren wasteland with a hot climate and scarce water resources. However, in Lot's time, Sodom was a prosperous and wealthy city. And this wealth spoiled the inhabitants. They stopped acting like normal people and became angry and cruel.

The behavior of the Sodomites went so far beyond the bounds of all decency that God decided to punish them exemplarily by destroying both the cities and all their inhabitants. In the form of three men, He appeared to Abraham and told about the impending punishment. Abraham, knowing that his nephew Lot lived in the doomed area, tried to dissuade God.

He asked to spare the cities for the sake of the righteous who might be there, and received a promise that these cities would be pardoned if at least ten righteous people were found in them.

There were no righteous people there, as we know, but to check if this was so, two angels were sent to Sodom under the guise of travelers. Lot received them into his home as honored guests. But the people of Sodom found out about the guests and demanded that Lot give them to them for fun.

They began to break down the door, but were blinded by the angels, who announced to Lot that God had sent them to punish this city. And Lot must immediately gather his family and go to the mountains.

During the execution, Lot's rescued family was strictly forbidden to look towards the cities being destroyed. But Lot's wife, who regretted leaving the house, wanted to look at it, and was immediately punished by turning into a pillar of salt.

What's mine is mine and yours is yours

This is roughly what the story of Sodom and Gomorrah sounds like in the biblical account.

Archaeologists and historians have been trying for many years to verify how much of what is written in the Torah corresponds to reality. Dozens of studies were carried out over the years, but the exact location of these cities could not be determined. After all, according to the Torah, Sodom and Gomorrah were simply wiped off the face of the earth.

However, some experts believe that the cause of the destruction was a strong earthquake. Others explain the death of these cities by volcanic activity, while others blame it all on the impact of a large meteorite.

Much remains unclear regarding the main content of the story about the sin of Sodom. Commentators do not even agree on the question of why exactly the Creator punished these two cities. It is usually believed that it is for sexual perversion, but many sages of the Talmud claim that it is not for this at all, but primarily for the spiritual malice of the sodomites, for their insensibility, hatred of strangers and sadistic cruelty.

For example, anyone who was seen giving bread to a beggar was put to death. Anyone who invited a foreigner to a wedding was stripped naked as punishment. It was also forbidden to host guests.

That is, the principle of existence in Sodom and Gomorrah came down to the formula “what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours.” In other words, any communication with other people was practically prohibited. Nobody helps anyone, there is no reciprocity in anything, everyone is on their own and for themselves. The attitude towards one's neighbor is complete indifference. Helping others is prohibited by law.

This, according to Kabbalists, is the real meaning of the sin of Sodom.

Everything else is just consequences.

However, the story of the sin of Sodom is not just a cautionary tale of history. It has a direct bearing on us living today. When a person lives only for himself, fenced off from others with a wall of selfishness, cares only about his own well-being, indifferently passing by those in need of help, this is the real sin of Sodom.

Sodom is a “mine is mine, yours is yours” worldview. That is, we don’t touch each other, we are polite and careful. But if you come near me, I have the right to kill you. And I will do it. And if I don’t, then I will break the laws of Sodom, and I will be punished.

This is how Sodom is built. And every resident in it knows his place, and everyone observes its laws very seriously.

The ideology of Sodom is extremely strong. And it is vicious because it does not allow people to contact each other. And without creating a good connection between us, we will not rise to the next stage of development - the unity of all humanity. Therefore, the sin of Sodom is directed precisely against the design of creation - the unity of all opposite parts of creation. And this state is achieved through observance of the basic principle of the Torah “love your neighbor as yourself.”

On this path, Sodom stops a person, because its laws do not allow people to connect: “Do what you want, just don’t contact your neighbor!” Therefore, the ideology of Sodom had to be demonstrably destroyed - the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were wiped off the face of the earth.

And the story of Lot’s wife, who, turning back, turned into a pillar of salt, tells us that we cannot return to our past egoistic states, when we believed that, in principle, “what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours” there is nothing wrong.

Will there be ten righteous people?

Every generation has its Sodom. However, our generation is significantly different from previous ones. Today the world has become global and it has become clear that we are all interconnected in it. Our well-being and life itself now depend not only on ourselves and the policies of our state, but also on what is happening in countries far from us.

And therefore, in order to survive in this interconnected world, we need solidarity, consistency of action and mutual responsibility. Nature itself, or the Creator, requires this from us. (According to Kabbalah, these are the same thing). The Creator demands from us ideal communication, when everyone works in maximum return to others, receiving everything they need for themselves.

The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah became history a long time ago, but the worldview of their inhabitants has not completely disappeared from our world. Moreover, the development of egoism in us has led to the fact that it has turned into a kind of culture that has become a threat to the spiritual elevation of the world.

Will there be ten righteous people today who will become examples to follow? This is a question each of us should ask ourselves. After all, by our actions we determine the future of the world.

Sodom in the modern world

Often the term “sodomy” refers to promiscuous sexual relations between partners.
This term also means sexual intercourse with animals (bestiality) and children. In the United States, oral and anal intercourse is considered the sin of sodomy. In the Big Explanatory Medical Dictionary, this term refers to anal intercourse between partners. Without going into medical details, the Orthodox Church defines the sin of Sodom as any illegal relationship involving sexual desire between people. The ascetic laws of Christian life do not allow any physical contact between young people, and in some Christian communities it is considered unacceptable for a girl and a boy to be in the same closed room in the absence of adults. Ideally, a couple in love should not only get married, but also get married in a church.

What does sodomy mean?

It is a historical term originally used to refer to various forms of sexually deviant behavior. This concept was applied to any manifestations of sexuality that did not pursue the goal of conceiving a child. In legal sources this is what they called and still call any unnatural intimate relationships. Those who are interested in what a sodomite means can be answered that this is a person who is extremely sexually immoral, vicious and cruel. This is the name given to it in Christian theology.

Where did this name come from?

During the time of Abraham, terrible things began to happen in the town of Sodom. People seemed to have gone crazy. They began to experience sexual attraction to members of the same sex. Moreover, this madness reached such an extent that the townspeople even used violence to satisfy their lust.

But the most terrible and blasphemous thing is that these people wanted to violate the most sacred thing, the heavenly angels whom Lot sheltered.

The Almighty could not tolerate such unbridled madness and debauchery. As a result, he sent streams of sulfur and fire rain onto the city, which turned everything into ash. But God's wrath knew no bounds. The remains of the city's ashes were covered by the waves of the Dead Sea.

History of sinful cities

The story of the origin of the sin of Sodom goes back to the times of the Old Testament, when the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, located on the southern bank of the Jordan River and washed by the waters of the Dead Sea, were large and prosperous. Initially, God loved these cities, giving them to the righteous man Lot, brother of the prophet Abraham. Having received an abundant, well-fed life from the Lord, the people living there, over time, began to forget the living God. They made idols of gold for themselves and succumbed to gluttony and adultery. Their thoughts were far from the Lord, and every day the debauchery and lust there became stronger.

Sodomy in Catholicism

In the Catholic faith, church parishioners were allowed to have intimate relations only with legal spouses solely for procreation. All other connections were considered sinful. The Holy Inquisition diligently fought against sinners and especially against sodomites. In the 12th century, the church declared a fight against homosexuals, recognizing their relationships as sinful in all forms.

The dark times in Western and Central Europe have passed, and with them the persecution of sodomites has sunk into oblivion. Since the time when the church left the state and became a separate entity, the attitude of church ministers towards sinners in the Catholic world has changed.

How is the sin of Sodom justified?

Nowadays, homosexuality is justified by mental disorders. This is absurd. It turns out that those who pass laws on such marriages also have mental problems at the “official” level? Then what are these people doing in government?

What is it - the sin of Sodom? We now know that he is an abomination to God. And it cannot be justified. You can only cleanse yourself by sincere repentance and review of your own life. What we are seeing in the world is just some kind of madness. They try to disguise sin and present it as the norm. And those who rebel against are ridiculed and silenced.

No matter how they shout at us from the blue screens that homosexuality is the norm, this is pure lies. Sin has never been and never will be the norm. Therefore, we should not believe the information that our “tolerant” comrades so forcefully impose on us.

Holy Fathers on Sodomy

The patristic tradition in this regard clearly and clearly makes it clear that any manifestations of same-sex relationships and all kinds of perversions are not approved by the church. Saints John Chrysostom, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Blessed Augustine and others speak about the sinfulness of such relationships and condemn them. Moreover, in the New Testament such apostates are not even called to repentance: “Let the unrighteous still do injustice; let the unclean one still become unclean; Let the righteous still do righteousness, and let the holy one still be illuminated.” (Rev.22:11).

Sodomy in the Russian Orthodox Church is condemned, but the fundamentals of the social concept consider only homosexuality and transsexualism in this capacity. Gay sodomites are called to repentance, and transsexuals who decide to change their sex are accused of “rebellion against the creator” and are also called to repent, to atone for sin through prayer and fasting, and reading the Holy Scriptures. Only Christian communication with a confessor and believers will help you take the right path.

Genuine conflict

In general, let’s think about Ezekiel’s diagnosis: the powerful of this world are idle - because others are working, satiated - because the working people are robbed, proud - at the expense of the robbed working people (“cattle”, “poor people”, etc.). The main and in some important sense the only conflict is the conflict between the proud and the poor. And we know which side the Lord is on. Theotokos: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and My spirit rejoices in God, My Savior, that He has looked upon the humility of His Servant, for from now on all generations will bless Me; that the Mighty One has done great things for Me, and holy is His name; and His mercy throughout all generations is upon those who fear Him; He showed the strength of His arm; He scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the humble; He filled the hungry with good things, and sent away the rich with nothing ; He received His servant Israel, remembering mercy, as He spoke to our fathers, toward Abraham and his seed forever.”

Love for Sodomy

Between the 6th and 11th centuries, Europeans used the term "sodomy" to refer to any illicit sexual act, including extramarital and premarital sex between a man and a woman. The inquisitors already used the concepts of debauchery and sodomy in relation to homosexuals, as in Russia in pre-Petrine times. Then cases of sexual contacts between representatives of the stronger sex among the nobility became more frequent. Rich merchants even hired boys for sexual gratification.

  1. Currently, sodomites are those who prefer anal sexual intercourse and copulation with animals.
  2. In some sources, this concept is identified with bestiality.
  3. Any oral satisfaction with both a person of the same and the opposite sex falls under this definition.
  4. More often, anal sodomy as a term is used in relation to homosexuals.

Will the Lord be able to forgive the sin of sodomy?

Priest's answer:

God clearly expressed His will for repentant sinners through the prophet Ezekiel: “Say to them: As I live, says the Lord God, I do not want the death of the sinner, but that the sinner should turn from his way and live” (Ezek. 33:11). Therefore, here everything depends not on the favor of God, but on a person’s ability to learn the gift of forgiveness taught by God (the priest is only a conductor of Divine grace). What do I mean by these words? – It is necessary to enter a state of spiritual poverty, born from a person’s vision of his sin (it’s as if, having run into a nail, we feel pain). Our usual state is spiritual blindness and a petrified inability to feel our falls. So, the condition for assimilation of the gift of God's forgiveness is the acquisition of the state of the gospel publican, or a prudent thief. But in order to acquire this condition, you will need to work hard. The intensity and duration of spiritual work directly depends on the severity of the sins committed (just as the period of healing from a bodily wound depends on its depth). Where to start your repentance?

1. From prayer. You need to pray, both in your own words and in church prayers. For example, every day, for some time (for example, a month), read the canon of repentance to the sweetest Jesus. You can read other canons and akathists.

2. More often bring to mind the lives of the saints and compare them with your current state.

3. In prayer, ask God to help us hate our sin and love abstinence.

4. Remember more often about your death, and that we will endure all our sins into eternity before the face of God.

5. Having spent sufficient time in personal repentance, come to church and reveal your sin at the Sacrament of Confession. Then, with trembling, reverence, and awareness of one’s unworthiness, partake of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Participate in Confession and Communion regularly (at least twice a month).

6. At the same time, outside the temple, fight with all your might against the urges of passion, not giving it a reason to flare up again and take possession of the soul. Avoid people with whom sin occurred, preserve sight, hearing, and especially touch.

7. After a person finally feels that God has forgiven him, he must, nevertheless, more often bring to mind his fall into sin, and humble himself so as not to fall into carelessness, relax, and, God forbid , do not sin again.

Work like this, and you will receive God’s forgiveness.

Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible - a warning to those living today

It is interesting that a person can become so hardened in his heart that he refuses to repent even in the last moments of his life. This is what the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation, says:

Other people who did not die from these plagues did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons and gold, silver, copper, stone and wooden idols, which cannot see, hear, or walk. And they did not repent of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their theft. (Revelation 9:20,21)

The fifth angel poured out his cup on the throne of the beast: and his kingdom became dark, and they bit their tongues from their suffering, and blasphemed the God of heaven from their sufferings and their plagues; and did not repent of their deeds. (Revelation 16:10,11)

In the Bible you can find many similar examples when some people repent of their sins and change their lives, while others, on the contrary, harden their hearts even more before God, not wanting to humble themselves.
