Prayer text

Oh, great Pleasant of God and glorious Wonderworker, Our Hierarch Tikhon!

With tenderness, we bend our knees and fall before the race of your honest and multi-healing relics, we praise, glorify and magnify God, who glorified you, and who showed great mercy in you to us unworthy, and who diligently, with faith and love, honors your holy memory, we pray to you: bring our prayer to all to the sustaining and saving man-loving Lord, to whom you now stand as an Angel and with all the Saints, that He may establish in His holy Orthodox Church the living spirit of right faith and piety, and that all its members, purified from superstition and wisdom, worship Him in spirit and truth and diligently care about keeping His commandments, may its shepherd give holy zeal for the salvation of the people entrusted to them - to observe the right of the believer, to strengthen the weak and infirm in the faith, to instruct the ignorant, to reprove the contrary.

And again, with hope, like the child of our father who exists for us, we pray to you, Saint Tikhon, for we believe that you, living in heaven, love us with the same love with which you loved all your neighbors, so that you may always remain on earth, ask from the all-merciful Lord and give us all a gift that is beneficial to everyone and everything that is useful for the temporal and eternal life, peace, the establishment of our cities, the fruitfulness of the earth, deliverance from famine and destruction, preservation from the invasion of foreigners, consolation for the grieving, healing for the sick, restoration for the fallen, return to the path of truth for those who go astray, strengthening for those who strive in good deeds, prosperity for those who do good, blessing for the parent, upbringing and teaching for children in the passion of the Lord, knowledge and piety for the mentor, admonition for the ignorant, help and intercession for the orphans, the poor and the needy, departing from this temporary life to the eternal good preparation and parting words for those who have departed to blissful repose. For all of these, most especially, ask us, Saint Tikhon, from the Generous God, for you have great boldness towards Him: for you are the owner of the ever-present intercessor and warm prayer book for us before the Lord, to whom all glory, honor and worship is due.

To the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

PRAYER FROM THE CREATIONS OF ST. DEMITRIY OF ROSTOV

God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who comforts us in all our sorrow! Comfort everyone who is grieving, saddened, despairing, or overwhelmed by the spirit of despondency. After all, every person was created by Thy hands, wise by wisdom, exalted by Thy right hand, glorified by Thy goodness... But now we are visited by Thy Fatherly punishment, short-term sorrows! “You compassionately punish those you love, and have mercy generously and look upon their tears!” So, having punished, have mercy and quench our sorrow; turn sorrow into joy and dissolve our sorrow with joy; Surprise us with Thy mercy, wondrous in counsels, Lord, incomprehensible in destinies, Lord, and blessed in Thy deeds forever, amen.

O all-praised Saint and Servant of Christ, our Father Tikhon! Having lived like an angel on earth, you, like a good angel, appeared in your wondrous glorification. We believe with all our souls and thoughts that you, our merciful helper and prayer book, are constantly contributing to our salvation through your honest intercessions and the grace abundantly bestowed upon you from the Lord. The incorrupt relics of the saint

In 1845, during the construction of a new church, the tomb of the saint was opened, and his relics turned out to be incorrupt. Sacred joy and reverence gripped everyone present.

The priests were afraid of the large crowd of people and quietly carried out the reburial, which was performed in the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary,

Only 16 years later, on the day of the death of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, he was canonized. While the top cover was being removed, the temple, filled with several tens of thousands of people, froze in silence; the Christians slowly sank to their knees and froze in silent weeping.

Reliquary with the relics of Tikhon of Zadonsk

Terrible times awaited the Vladimir Monastery during the years of the revolution, when the Red Army soldiers opened the tomb and took the relics to Oryol, to the museum of religion. At the same time, they made a film supposedly exposing the incorruptibility of bones, calling everything a lie of religion.

All churches in Zadonsk were closed, many priests were either shot or sent into exile. The surviving monks, faithful to their shrine, returned to the holy place, and after Stalin’s permission to open the temples, they began worship.

By chance, Father Victor found an icon of Patriarch Tikhon in the attic of one of the houses, where he was drawn in full growth, which became the main shrine of the open church.

In 1959, a new commission was created, which confirmed the incorruptibility of the relics. The then ruler of the USSR, N.S. Khrushchev, did not like this; in 1961, the holy remains were again transferred to the museum’s storage facility.

The diocese was large, sectarians were hiding on its territory, the priests were very uneducated and did not understand the essence of worship. Even the clergy holding high positions did not want to change anything in their lives, brushing aside the instructions of the humble bishop. The saint did a lot to raise the level of spirituality in his environment.

Meaning in Orthodoxy

Bishop Tikhon is one of the key figures in the group of educators of the Russian Orthodox Church. The bishop wrote many books necessary for studying the basics of theology. At the turn of the century, Tikhon guarded the religious world, fought against injustice, defended church ministers and sought to streamline the system of worship.

After Tikhon's death, more than 15 volumes with texts were published. The complete works include the following books:

  • thoughts about Christianity;
  • a complete collection of letters;
  • thoughts about teaching the gospel;
  • short lectures on various topics;
  • various sermons.

One of the volumes was entirely devoted to a description of Tikhon’s life. The Holy Synod, by unanimous decision, published the books several times. The latest edition was a systematic collection of texts arranged chronologically. Since then, the bishop's works have been published several times.

It is interesting that Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky took the figure of Tikhon of Zadonsky as the basis for describing the image of the elder Zosima in his work “The Brothers Karamazov.

Among the devastation

In April 1758, Timofey Sokolovsky was tonsured a monk with the name Tikhon. After tonsure, he was called to St. Petersburg and ordained a hieromonk, then he was the governor of a number of monasteries. In 1763, in Novgorod, where his spiritual path once began, Archimandrite Tikhon was invested with the rank of bishop. And almost immediately he was appointed to the Voronezh department.

The cathedral city made a painful impression on the bishop: the church buildings were striking in their dilapidation, and church life in its neglect. In the huge diocese - from Voronezh to the Black Sea - there was a shortage of clergy, and the population, scattered across the steppes, was ignorant and superstitious. The archpastor needed to take care of more than eight hundred churches. Can a mortal man have so much power?

The tireless performance of his duties resulted in a complete breakdown of the nervous system for the saint. He was almost unable to serve due to dizziness, trembling hands and fainting. Realizing for himself that his failing health would not be restored, Bishop Tikhon wrote to the Holy Synod a request for retirement. They refused him, advising him to undergo more intensive treatment, and the bishop found himself in a hopeless situation. Having the skill of obedience, he continued to work until insomnia and frequent rushes of blood to the head made it impossible for him not only to serve the Liturgy, but also to generally perform the duties of governing the diocese. Then, on the instructions of the empress, he was sent out of state. The new place of residence of the archpastor was the Tolshevskaya Transfiguration Monastery, and then he moved to the Zadonsky Mother of God Monastery, which is 90 versts from Voronezh. There the ascetic wrote books that were the fruit of his thoughts about eternity and people: “Spiritual Treasure Collected from the World” and “On True Christianity.”

PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE FROM DESPONDERNESS OF SAINT JOHN OF KRONSTADT

The Lord is the destruction of my despondency and the revival of my boldness. Everything is Lord for me. Oh, truly this Lord, glory to You! Glory to Thee, Father's Life, Son's Life, Soul's Life, Holy One - Simple Being - God, who always delivers us from spiritual death, caused by passions to our soul. Glory to Thee, Trinitarian Master, for from one invocation of Thy name you enlighten the dark face of our soul and body and bestow Your peace, which surpasses all earthly and sensual good and all understanding.
