Irmos of the 1st song of the canon at Matins: “Three hundred strong, born of the Virgin, dispassion in the depths, flood the tripartite soul, I pray that as in the tympanum, in the mortification of the body, I will sing a victorious song.” — Tristati is a word from the Greek translation of the Bible, which was also included in its Church Slavonic translation. This word denoted teams of war chariots, consisting of three fighters: a coachman, a shooter and a shield bearer. It was these chariots that chased the Jews and were sunk by divine power at the bottom of the Red Sea (Ex. 15). In this Irmos, the events of the Jews crossing the Red Sea are only implied. The ailments of the soul are compared here with “strong tristates” - “tripartite soul” - obviously an allusion to the thought of the holy Apostle John the Theologian about the three main vices of the soul: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). In this irmos we call upon the “Born of the Virgin” (i.e. the Lord Jesus Christ) to drown our soul vices in the “depth of dispassion”, so that, having mortified flesh (and the lust of the flesh), as on a tympanum (musical instrument), we will sing A song to God.

First, we present the texts of the troparion and kontakion in Church Slavonic.

Troparion:

The good news of the Resurrection

The text of the troparion begins with the phrase bright resurrection sermon. The Church Slavonic adjective light has a special meaning, inherent in the Russian language only in part, “glorious, joyful, cheerful”[3].

It is not difficult to remember the events preceding the Resurrection of Christ. The disciples, seeing their Teacher being taken into custody, fled in fear. They were overcome by horror and inner devastation, because the apostles saw in Christ the earthly Lord, to whom all the kingdoms of the world would certainly submit. Imagine the joy of the apostles when they learned that Jesus Christ was alive and that He had risen.

The word angel is of Greek origin and in Church Slavonic is the result of transliteration, that is, the exact transfer of signs of one script by signs of another [4], from the Greek language. The angel (άγγελος - from Greek “messenger” [5]) is at the tomb and awaits the first people who, at the end of the Sabbath, will hasten to visit the Body of Jesus. He was sent by God for a reason, because through the angel the disciples of Christ - the myrrh-bearing women - are the first to know about the Resurrection.

What did the Resurrection give?

Reading the text of the troparion, we come across the not entirely clear expression of the ancestral condemnation. The fact is that the adjective great-grandfather in Church Slavonic means “ancestral”[6]. The text of the song refers us to the events described in the book of Genesis: the ancestral sin and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden are remembered (Genesis 3).

The noun condemnation in the original text corresponds to ἀπόφασις - literally “a sentence passed by a court”[7]. This is where the figurative meaning of “condemnation” comes from: we are talking about the judgment of God, which condemns the first two people - Adam and Eve. The phrase προγονικόςἀπόφασις means “hereditary sentence passed on the ancestors”[8].

Thus, the troparion also carries a dogmatic meaning: through Jesus Christ, humanity got rid of the essence, the mask of original sin, which blocked man from entering heaven.

Myrrh-Bearing Women and Apostles

It is worth paying attention to the antithesis embedded in the text of the troparion. The apostles, the closest disciples of Christ, are contrasted with His disciples - the myrrh-bearing women. The original text of the troparion contains the feminine aorist participle μαθοῦσαι, which helps determine that we are not talking about disciples, but about disciples of Christ. In the Church Slavonic text, this requires immersion in the context. The antithesis device again reminds us of the different characters, different faiths of the apostles and myrrh-bearers. The latter, who seemingly occupied a secondary place next to the Savior, turned out to be more persistent and faithful to Christ. As a reward for this, they are the first to see the Teacher again and announce His Resurrection.

The followers of Christ, boasting, that is, triumphing [9] (from the Greek καυχάομαι), repeatedly tell their disciples about what they saw. Not all the apostles immediately believed the myrrh-bearers, so they claim that Christ has risen and that they saw Him with their own eyes. This is evidenced by the imperfect form of the predicate verb-verb, which is correlated with the characters – women. The type of past tense under consideration is associated with an imperfect form, and the event described by it is always associated with some progression and periodicity[10]. The Church Slavonic text of the troparion, as well as the Greek, reflects this detail.

What do the companions of Christ talk about?

The next semantic passage of the troparion is the words of the myrrh-bearing women: Death has been cast away, Christ God has risen, granting great mercy to the world. The original speaks about the overthrow of death as follows: Ἐσκύλευται ὁ θάνατος. Ἐσκύλευται is a Greek aorist in the passive form, formed from the verb σκυλεύω. In Greek, the above verb means “to remove weapons and armor from a slain enemy”[11].

Christ is risen God - ἠγέρθηΧριστὸς ὁ Θεός. It is unusual that in this case the event of the Resurrection is conveyed through the aorist ἠγέρθη, whereas usually the active aorist ἀνέστη is used in the indicated meaning (from ἀνίστημι - get up, rebel, rise [12]). For example, it is present in the text of the Sunday kontakion of the same fourth voice: ἀνέστητριήμερος (Risen of three days). The aorist ἠγέρθη, translated into Church Slavonic as resurrected, is formed from the verb ἐγείρω - “to awaken, to rise”[13].

So, Christ was awakened from death, in other words, resurrected, and thereby did great things, i.e. great mercy.

Miracle of Resurrection

The text of the Sunday kontakion is relatively small. Its content seems to complement the theme of the Resurrection of the Savior. The chant reminds us of the event of the resurrection of many dead at that moment when the curtain in the Jerusalem temple was torn in half - and resurrected from the bonds of earthly birth. This marked the beginning of a new era in the relationship between God and man. The passage of the chant parallels the following passage from the Gospel:

“The coffins opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were resurrected, and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many” (Matthew 27:52-53).

In the kontakion, the deceased are called earth-born - literally those whom the Earth gave birth to. From the context it is clear that we are talking about the resurrection of the dead.

In addition, the prayer tells that the Lord crushed the gates of hell. The Greek verb συντρίβω, translated into Church Slavonic to crush, means “to crush into pieces, to abolish, to break through”[14]. Thus, the Savior crushes the gates of hell into pieces, breaks through them, leading righteous people from the bosom of Abraham to the heavenly abode for an eternal reign with Christ.
