Church of the Ascension of the Lord outside the Serpukhov Gate

History and architecture of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord

At the very end of the 17th century, the Danilov Monastery donated a plot of land belonging to it in Zemlyanoy Gorodok outside the Serpukhov Gate for the construction of a temple. By the beginning of the 18th century, a wooden church was built and consecrated in the name of the Ascension of Christ.

Soon, construction of a stone church began on this site at the expense of Peter I’s son, Tsarevich Alexei. In 1714, the lower chapel was consecrated in the name of the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God. However, Tsarevich Alexei secretly left Russia in 1716, and upon his return two years later he was deprived by Peter I of the right to succession to the throne. With the cessation of funding, further construction was stopped. In the same 1718, Tsarevich Alexei was sentenced to death by a court decision, but did not live to see the execution and died in the Peter and Paul Fortress.

At the request of the Orthodox community, construction of the cathedral was resumed in 1756 during the reign of Empress Elizabeth. Six years later the temple was completely built.

The final version of the cathedral is made in the mature Baroque style. Already in the middle of the 19th century, a refectory with the side chapels of St. Sergius of Radonezh and St. Nicholas, as well as a three-tier bell tower built in the style of classicism.

In the thirties, the godless government destroyed the Church of the Ascension of the Lord and set up state institutions in the surviving premises. From that time until 1991, the temple was inactive. In the nineties, after restoration work, it was re-consecrated and opened.

A chapel in honor of Princess Olga was also built on the territory of the cathedral. In addition to the main throne of the Resurrection of the Lord, the throne of St. Alexis, the man of God, is consecrated here.

A distinctive feature of the temple complex is that its outer part is painted in red and white colors.

  • particles of the relics of Prince Alexander Nevsky and St. Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky);
  • an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker containing a piece of the coffin;
  • a piece of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord.

Among the icons one can note the Jerusalem Icon of the Mother of God, the Old Testament Trinity and the New Testament Trinity icons, which contain particles of Mamre oak bark. This oak tree is mentioned in the Old Testament in the book of Genesis as the place where the Lord appeared to Abraham. There are also ancient icons of St. Sergius of Radonezh and Seraphim of Sarov.

The first rector of the temple after its return to the fold of Russian Orthodoxy was the resident of the Danilov Monastery, Archimandrite Savva. Just as gardeners carefully care for their garden, so the abbot nurtured the souls of his spiritual children. Currently, the rector is Archpriest Konstantin Tatarintsev.

Ascension of the Lord. Holiday event

After his Resurrection, the Lord appeared to his disciples many times. All the evangelists talk about this. The events after Easter and the Ascension of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ are told in the final chapters of the two Gospels: Mark (Mark 16:19-20) and Luke (Luke 24:50-53). This is also stated in the book of the Acts of the Apostles, compiled by the Evangelist Luke:

I wrote the first book to you, Theophilus, about everything that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day on which He ascended, giving commands by the Holy Spirit to the Apostles whom He chose, to whom He revealed Himself alive, after His suffering, with with many true proofs, appearing to them for forty days and speaking about the Kingdom of God. And, having gathered them, He commanded them: do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for what was promised from the Father, which you heard from Me, for John baptized with water, and a few days after this you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they came together and asked Him, saying: Are you at this time, O Lord, restoring the kingdom to Israel? He said to them: It is not your business to know the times or seasons that the Father has appointed in His authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth. Having said this, He rose up in their sight, and a cloud took Him out of their sight. And when they looked at the sky, during His ascension, suddenly two men in white clothes appeared to them and said: Men of Galilee! Why are you standing and looking at the sky? This Jesus, who ascended from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him ascending into heaven (Acts 1:1-11).

Today from the Mount of Olives he ascended in glory .” This is such an important event that in the Orthodox Creed it is mentioned after the Resurrection of Christ:

And # ascended to nb7sA, and 3 sedscha nc7a. And again, the one who comes with glory, judges the living and the dead, and there is no end to your life.

The Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven in front of the eyes of the Most Holy Theotokos and the apostles from the Mount of Olives. It is the largest peak near Jerusalem (currently located in the suburbs). At the end of the 19th century, during excavations here, mosaic floors of Byzantine churches of the 6th–7th centuries were found.

Advice

The requiem was served by the rector of the church, Archpriest Konstantin, a man of amazing destiny. He told me something about himself. But, wanting to know more, I found an article about him on the Internet by Denis Tykulov, “Archpriest Konstantin Tatarintsev: the priest who taught Dzhokhar Dudayev to fly an airplane”:

In the office of Father Konstantin, rector of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord outside the Serpukhov Gate, in addition to icons there are photographs of jet fighters, and on the bookshelf the missal is adjacent to a book about Suvorov’s military system “Not in numbers, but in ability”...

Father Konstantin was born into a military family and studied at an English special school on Kutuzovsky Prospekt.

When the time came to choose an institute, his childhood dreams of becoming a pilot were forgotten, and he, fascinated by the exact sciences, entered the Moscow Energy Institute. However, Konstantin Tatarintsev still had the opportunity to fly. Moreover, while serving in the army, his life collided with Dzhokhar Dudayev, at that time a colonel in the Soviet Army.

After graduating from university, having received the specialty of engineer-physicist, Konstantin Tatarintsev remained to work at the institute in the department of low temperatures, and at the same time entered the graduate school of mechanics and mathematics at Moscow University.

But my studies had to be interrupted due to conscription into the Armed Forces.
