Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Tushino
- Orthodox church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The temple is located in Moscow, in the Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo district, on the territory of the former village of Spas.
History[edit]
The villages of Spasskoye and Tushino, located on the elevated left bank of the Vskhodnya River (modern name Skhodnya), have been known since the 14th century. At that time they belonged to the boyar Rodion Nesterovich Kvashnya. The village of Spaskoye owes its name to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, which was located there from the 14th century until 1764. The monastery was transferred by the descendants of Vasily Ivanovich Kvashnin, nicknamed “Tusha,” into the possession of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The first church of the monastery was the Church of the Transfiguration - first wooden and then stone, which fell into disrepair in the middle of the 17th century and was dismantled. The second church of the monastery - a stone one, in the name of Andrew Stratelates - was built in the 16th century.
In 1764, the monastery was abolished, and the Church of the Transfiguration became the parish church of the villages of Spasskoye and Tushino. In the 19th century, due to the large number of the parish, the question of its expansion or restructuring arose. In addition, the church was in a rather dilapidated state, and due to the sliding of the river bank for three centuries it found itself on the edge of a cliff. Therefore, in 1870, a decision was made to build a new stone church in the village of Spassky - away from the first one and away from the dangerous cliff of the bank - at the opposite end of the main street of the village of Spassky and closest to the village of Tushino.
The author of the project for the new Transfiguration Church in the village of Spas-Tushino was the architect of the Chamber of State Property Vladislav Osipovich Grudzinsky. Soon after the project was approved, in 1875, the brick refectory and bell tower of the old church were dismantled to the ground, and the bricks were used to build a fence around the new church. Metropolitan Ioannikiy of Moscow and Kolomna personally consecrated the Spaso-Tushino Church on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, August 6, 1886.
By 1917, the village of Spas-Tushino had become a large industrial center of the textile industry. After the revolution, church lands were nationalized. In the 30s In the 20th century, Tushino became a major industrial center: heavy industrial enterprises were built there and an airfield was opened. In 1935, the Transfiguration Church was closed, the last rector Alexander Sokolov was repressed as an “enemy of the people”, the previous one, priest Alexander Buravtsev, was shot at the Butovo training ground in 1937.
In the 1950s The bell tower was blown up and the dome was demolished, the church housed a club, then a warehouse and workshops, the surrounding area was turned into a landfill.
In 1990, the temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Worship resumed in August 1990; the temple became the first in Moscow consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II after his enthronement. The bell tower of the temple was restored in 1994.
Currently, the interior of the main temple is decorated with mosaics (works by artists A.D. Kornoukhov, D.M. and I.D. Shakhovsky, L.D. Kurilo, L.D. Tsarev), the refectory part of the temple was painted by artists V.A. . Sidelnikov and V.I. Lyubarsky. The restored temple is made of brick from the outside. Three iconostases in the ancient Russian style were made by the artist O.G. Klodt. By 1999, the temple was completely restored. The revival of church life and restoration was headed by Archpriest. Feodor Sokolov (1959-02/21/2000), buried at the altar of the temple.
Where is the temple?
Among the Moscow outskirts, Tushino boasts almost one of the richest histories. It, which arose in the 14th century as a small churchless village, happened to be the capital of False Dmitry II, burned to the ground during the Time of Troubles, was reborn, became a workers’ village, visited one of the “islands” of the “GULAG archipelago”, received the status of a city and eventually became part of Moscow. Today Tushino unites 3 metropolitan districts: to the north - Northern Tushino, to the south - Southern Tushino, and Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo, which took the place of the village of Spas, which has long sunk into oblivion.
- It was on the territory of the latter that the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was located, the address of which is as follows: Moscow, Volokolamskoye Highway, 128.

Architecture of the complex
After completion of construction, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, whose height is 31.5 m, became the decoration of the street. Boat. Due to the fact that almost all residential buildings located next to the temple complex have only 5 floors, permission from Mosgosstroynadzor for the construction of a taller religious building was not received.
From afar, the temple complex bears some resemblance to a flagship frigate, which is quite natural, given that the cathedral was built as a spiritual center for workers in the maritime and river industries. This shape (an elongated quadrangle with a protruding front part) has been known for a long time and is a symbol of the ark for the salvation of souls.
The final project was approved in the style of Russian buildings of the 12th–14th centuries, repeating medieval Vladimir-Suzdal architecture. It was decided that the decoration of the walls of the building should copy elements that can be seen in Vladimir at the Dmitrov Cathedral and in Yuryev-Polsky at the St. George Church.
The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on Lodochnaya in Tushino (except for the frame, which was cast from monolithic concrete) was built of brick, which made it possible to enhance the acoustic effect inside the building. In addition, this building material is able to maintain a comfortable temperature and humidity regime, which is very important when the room is very full, for example, during holiday services.
The outer cladding is made in white. The main decorative elements include an arcature-columnar belt, pilasters with half-columns. The facade is decorated with tiles with decorative patterns and stucco molding, repeating examples of medieval architecture of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality (XII-XIV centuries).
The patterns used by the craftsmen to decorate the building include symbols typical of sailors and fishermen.
The cathedral has 3 chapels:
- Nicholas the Wonderworker;
- Tikhon, Patriarch of All Russia, who became the head of the Russian church after the fall of the autocracy;
- John the Theologian.
The temple complex, including the clergy house, occupies an area of 1.5 thousand square meters. m. (the area of the temple itself is 547 sq. m., the dimensions of the clergy house are 954 sq. m.) The capacity of the cathedral is small (up to 200 parishioners).
The parish house is 2-storey. It housed a kitchen, a small bakery and a prosphora. The building has special rooms for Sunday school classes and group work. Administrative offices are also located here.
The temple and temple grounds are adapted for people with disabilities. There are ramps installed here, and lecterns and candlesticks are of a height that allows wheelchair users to get around without assistance.
For people who have hearing problems, speakers are built into the walls of the building. To help visually impaired people better navigate their surroundings, there are tactile tiles on the walls and contrasting lines on the floor.
History of the construction of the temple
In the Northwestern Administrative District of the capital, there are about 25 operating Orthodox churches (20 are still under construction). However, the St. Nicholas Church on Lodochnaya was included in the construction program, the task of which is to provide city residents with churches and cathedrals located near the house.
Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Tushino
A special feature of this program is the fact that it is implemented entirely on voluntary donations. Fundraising is carried out by a charitable foundation.
The temple is located in the north-west of the capital, on the shore of the Khimki reservoir. In 2013, the design of the St. Nicholas Church began , and in the winter of 2014, Patriarch Kirill gave his blessing for its construction.
The development of the project was carried out in the best traditions of ancient Russian architecture and was supervised by the Federal Agency for Sea and River Transport. Professor of MAAM and MARKHI D.V. Prokofiev was appointed as the architect of the building, and the limited liability company “SENAB PROJECT” was appointed as the designer.
The site for construction was chosen on the street. Boat. The consecration and laying of the first stone of the future building took place at the end of March 2016. Construction work began in late autumn of the same year.
Construction was carried out at an accelerated pace:
- by September 2022, work on the construction of the monolithic frames of the church building and the parish house was completed;
- the brickwork of the walls and vaults was completed in March 2022, and in April, on Bright Week, the consecration of bells and crosses for the temple under construction took place;
- the construction of the parish house and the church building was completed in July 2022, and in August-October the heating circuit, work on heat, water and electricity were completed.
During the construction period, services were held in the premises of a temporary church-chapel in honor of John the Theologian. The tented temple was made of logs in the traditional North Russian style. Since 2014, prayer services have been held there for the first parishioners of the cathedral under construction.
Divine services were held in a temporary wooden church until November 6, 2018. On the evening of November 6, a deliberate arson occurred. The fire service arrived quickly, but irreparable damage was caused to the wooden building: the roof, floors and altar were completely burned, the windows and the prayer hall were badly damaged.
Therefore, the surviving parts of the building were dismantled, and the logs and cross undamaged by the fire were used in the construction of another religious building. Due to the fact that the temporary temple could not be restored, holiday and Sunday services began to be held in a new stone building under construction.
This was extremely inconvenient, since all construction work stopped for some time, and the parishioners had to clear the church of construction debris before each service, install an iconostasis, place icons, and improve the altar. After the service, everything had to be carefully folded again and taken away until the next service.
In 2022, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the still unfinished church on Easter night.
The finishing of the temple was completed by the end of April 2022. By this time, icons were installed in the iconostasis, church furniture and lamps (choirs, candlesticks, sconces) were prepared. The uniqueness of all these items is that they all have symbols characteristic of the maritime profession: steering wheels, compasses, anchors, and the cross in the boat is the main symbol that adorns the St. Nicholas Church on Lodochnaya.
The decorations and utensils of the temple cannot be called standard; they were ordered specifically for the decoration of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tushino.
On the eve of the professional holiday (07/5/2019), the manager of the North-Western Vicariate of the capital, Bishop Thomas Bronnitsky, performed the rite of minor consecration of St. Nicholas Church in Tushino.
The consecration was attended by many guests, among whom was the head of one of the charitable foundations O. N. Kulikovskaya-Romanova, the widow of T. N. Kulikovsky-Romanov (nephew of Nicholas II). She brought a lectern icon from her personal collection as a gift to St. Nicholas Cathedral.
In the same year, the temple was transferred to the jurisdiction of the parish.
Modernity
The building was transferred to the Orthodox Church in 1990. In August of the same year, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Tushino was consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II. Over the next four years, the chapels of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. Sergius of Radonezh and the bell tower were restored and consecrated.
To date, there is a cemetery on the temple grounds, where the remains of people from the graveyard destroyed during the Soviet years and a Sunday school building have been reburied.
The temple servants are active in educational and social activities.
Social work, everyday life
Despite the fact that the temple is completely new, broad and diverse social work is already being carried out within it.
Parish activities:
- the spiritual mentors of the church conduct catechetical conversations with parishioners;
- a children's and youth water tourism club "Anchor" was organized;
- social service works;
- There is a vocal and choral studio in which parishioners of different ages study.
A Sunday school is open at the church for adults and children.
School for children
Children's Sunday school holds classes from 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays. All the work of Sunday School is aimed at the spiritual education of children.
There are currently 3 age groups:
- The younger group is attended by preschoolers. In classes, teachers introduce children aged 5–6 years to primary ideas about the world, God, and the Orthodox faith.
- Children aged 7–9 years go to the middle group. The curriculum compiled for this age helps expand children's knowledge about faith, introduces them to Orthodox traditions, and instills the skills of Christian piety.
- The senior group is children aged 10 years and older. The curriculum of this group is based on the formation of an Orthodox worldview and Christian morality.
The main subjects taught in Sunday School are:
- God's Law;
- Old and New Testament;
- Fundamentals of Christian Morality;
- choral and church singing;
- Church Slavonic language;
- Worship and Sacraments.
Not least important are activities aimed at developing creativity: modeling, drawing, making various crafts.
At the school there are aircraft modeling clubs, “I want to do it myself”, and theater clubs. For children who need the support of a psychologist, a psychological counseling service is open.
In addition to the educational and developmental functions, the children's Sunday school takes upon itself the organization of events:
- Easter and puppet shows;
- excursions to holy places;
- Christmas holidays;
- conducting various quizzes and quests.
School for adults
The school for adults is open on Sundays from 15:00. Anyone can talk with the priest and get answers to all their spiritual questions from him.
In addition, the Sunday School operates a psychological support service, where a professional psychologist will help you understand interpersonal and personal problems. They will also tell you how to resolve family conflicts and establish normal relationships between children and parents.
The psychologist provides consultations, including individual ones, free of charge. The school offers courses for parishioners over 18 years of age where they can learn gold and face embroidery.
