Cathedral of Christ the Savior

- Cathedral of the Kaliningrad Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, built according to the design of the architect Oleg Kopylov. Designed for 3,000 people. The height (to the cross) reaches 51 meters. The temple is located on the central square of Kaliningrad - Victory Square. The temple was built in the style of Vladimir-Suzdal temple architecture.

History[edit]

The history of the Kaliningrad Cathedral of Christ the Savior dates back to April 30, 1995, on the day of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Orthodoxy on Kaliningrad land.

On that day, a citywide religious procession took place from the Holy Cross Cathedral to the park on Victory Square. After a prayer service on the site of the future church, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad (now His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus') consecrated the foundation stone, and also installed a seven-meter wooden cross. The future cathedral was supposed to become a symbol of Orthodoxy on Kaliningrad land. It was conceived as the first temple in the city, built in accordance with the canons of Russian Orthodox architecture - a five-domed golden-domed white stone cathedral, similar to the temples of the Pskov Kremlin.

Until 1985, there was not a single Orthodox church in Kaliningrad, and the parishes that opened subsequently operated, as a rule, within the walls of German religious buildings that needed restoration. Hegumen Mercury (Ivanov), now Metropolitan of Rostov and Novocherkassk, was appointed the first rector of the cathedral, which was still just being designed.

In May 1995, the appearance of the future temple was chosen: its author was the architect Oleg Vadimovich Kopylov. The project was approved by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II.

On June 23, 1996, His Eminence KIRILL, Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, together with His Excellency Boris Nikolaevich YELTSIN, the first President of Russia, laid a capsule with consecrated soil taken from under the walls of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow into the foundation of the future cathedral.

At the end of June 1996, the wooden Small Cathedral of Christ the Savior was built next to the cathedral construction site. This temple was consecrated by Metropolitan Kirill of Kaliningrad and Smolensk, in honor of the Image of the Lord Not Made by Hands. The first festive service took place on September 27, 1996. This temple stood next to the cathedral under construction until 2009, after which it was dismantled and reassembled in the Kaliningrad microdistrict “Selma”.

The upper church of the Cathedral with a capacity of 3 thousand people is dedicated to the feast of the Nativity of Christ. The lower church in honor of the Image of Christ the Savior Not Made by Hands (Ubrus) is located in the basement of the stylobate and is designed for 400 people. The infrastructure of the temple includes children's classes of the parochial school, a conference hall, and a refectory.

The Upper Church of the Nativity of Christ was consecrated on September 10, 2006 by Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus'.

The lower church in the name of the Savior Not Made by Hands was consecrated on September 27, 2007 by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad. The “Memel” iconostasis, transferred in 1996 by the Holy Prince Vladimir Brotherhood from Germany, was installed in the temple, created during the Seven Years’ War for the Russian garrison in Memel (now Klaipeda).

A twenty-meter three-flight staircase leads to the main entrance to the temple.

Interior decoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This earth in a capsule was laid into the foundation of the new Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Kaliningrad in June 1996 in the presence of the first President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin.

At the end of June 1996, with the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch, construction of a small wooden Cathedral began at the site of the memorial cross. This temple was consecrated by Metropolitan Kirill of Kaliningrad and Smolensk, in honor of the Image of the Lord Not Made by Hands. The festive service took place on September 27, 1996 (i.e. three months after the start of construction).

ARCHITECTURE

The figurative structure of the building of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior was designed in the style of Vladimir-Suzdal temple architecture. This style was adopted as the most laconic and expressive. According to the plan, the image of the cathedral should embody modern achievements of architecture and ancient Russian origins. The special island location on the general plan predetermined the decision of its architectural appearance.

The cathedral building itself is an octagon with protruding arched entrance portals. The dimensions of the temple are 31x31 m. The altar part of the cathedral is crowned with a dome and attached to the eastern side of the building. The entire arched composition rests on a podium stylobate with a diameter of 60 meters, which is the walkway of the Temple. The composition of the cathedral is strictly symmetrical, which emphasizes the monumentality and significance of the structure.

A large three-flight staircase leads to the podium - the main floor of the cathedral at 0.00 m. Under the stairs there is a loading and unloading unit and a box for 5-6 cars. The 20-meter wide staircase is flanked by two cascades of flower beds. The internal volumetric-spatial design of the cathedral's interiors, along with traditional techniques (cross vault, four-pillar composition of the central dome, location of the altar and iconostasis), also has a number of innovations. Never before have so many glazed surfaces been used in temple architecture. This solution makes it possible to obtain a number of wonderful light and color effects: the rising sun will picturesquely pierce the interior of the building with its rays; the same thing at sunset; the dome with a cross crowning the altar part of the cathedral will constantly float through the stained glass windows above the iconostasis; during daylight hours, the mirrored stained glass windows of the cathedral will reflect everything around them, dissolving the building of the cathedral itself into the surrounding nature; in the evening and at night, the mirror effect will begin to work in the opposite direction; the interior of the temple with its interior decoration and beauty will be repeatedly reflected and transformed in the window openings.

SUBTOTALS

Currently, construction is being carried out by SSP "KSHS" - the structural and construction division of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Kaliningrad, which is the general contractor.

In October 2003, 11 bells for the future bell tower of the cathedral were delivered to the construction site of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The bells were cast by masters of the Voronezh Bell Foundry, reviving the traditions of Voronezh foundry workers. The smallest of the bells weighs only seven kilograms, the largest - three tons.

The three-ton bell was delivered to Kaliningrad back in 2002, but the main bell of the belfry - weighing twelve tons - has yet to be cast. Upon completion of the bell tower, all thirteen bells will be installed at a height of 45 meters. By the beginning of 2004, construction reached the level of technical floors - 32 m.

The base has been prepared for the installation of the main light drum (the basis for installing the central dome) - 18 meters high. A staircase was made to climb to the observation deck and bell towers.

Six crosses were brought to the construction site of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which will be erected on the future domes of the Temple.

According to the project, the Cathedral will be crowned with six golden-domed domes: a central dome, four side domes and a sixth altar dome. The height of the four crosses is 4 meters, the central one is 5.90 meters and the altar one is 3.20 meters.

The new metal crosses have a titanium nitride coating and will reflect sunlight over Kaliningrad at an altitude of about sixty meters as bright beacons of light.

The crosses were delivered to Kaliningrad from Chelyabinsk, where they were produced. Along with the new crosses, titanium nitride sheets were delivered for cladding the domes of the Cathedral.

In addition, by order of the cathedral in Chelyabinsk, the same company manufactured five main domes of the cathedral.

Rules of conduct in the temple for tourists

Lake Kinneret - the place of Christ's earthly ministry

The cathedral was originally a shrine for Orthodox believers and attracts thousands of pilgrims within its walls, familiar with all the rules of conduct in the temple. It is worth noting that together with believers, the temple is visited by hundreds of tourist groups, among which there may be believers of other faiths, foreigners, and children. In this regard, rules of conduct for tourists were developed and put into operation:

  • Dress code. It is forbidden to enter the temple in shorts or thin open T-shirts. It is advisable for women to have a long skirt or scarf/stole with them that will help cover their legs.
  • Headdress. Men are in the temple with their heads uncovered; women, on the contrary, should cover their heads with a scarf or stole.
  • You are not allowed to use a telephone on the temple grounds. In this regard, tourists are asked to turn off their mobile phones. This is done in order to maintain a calm atmosphere and not disturb the clergy during the service.
  • Shooting. There may be a complete ban on video or photography, or a partial ban, for example, it is prohibited to use a flash or professional photographic equipment when taking pictures.
  • In all churches in the country there is a strict ban on noise and loud conversations.
  • A strict ban also applies to visiting the cathedral with animals or food. All this can cause irreparable harm to unique icons.

Attention! These rules are designed to maintain an appropriate atmosphere of peace and quiet in the temple building. They also allow you to maintain the safety of icons and the interior of the cathedral. This is especially true given the high capacity of the cathedral. Up to 3 thousand people can be on the premises.
