Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Petrovsky Park

- an Orthodox church belonging to the All Saints Deanery of the Moscow City Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Architectural monument of federal significance. The rector is Mitred Archpriest Dmitry Nikolaevich Smirnov.

The temple was built in 1844-1847 by the architect F. Richter at the expense and on the initiative of A. D. Naryshkina.

In the 1830s, it became fashionable among Muscovites to purchase dachas in Petrovsky Park. Among the owners of the dachas was the actual chamberlain Anna Dmitrievna Naryshkina, the founder of the Annunciation Church. Anna Dmitrievna buried her only daughter, Countess Maria Bulgari, and in the summer of 1841, her thirteen-year-old granddaughter Anna Bulgari also died at the dacha in Petrovsky Park. This sad event prompted the chamberlain's wife to vow to build a church on the site of the girl's death.

The first project for the future building belonged to the famous Moscow architect E. D. Tyurin. His version - a temple with galleries, two bell towers and a magnificent dome - was a copy of the Petrovsky Palace and was rejected by Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich. The second project was carried out by academician of architecture, Professor F. F. Richter. His plan was based on one of the temples he examined - the Church of John the Baptist in Dyakovo. In the project developed by Richter, a bell tower pillar with a parabolic dome rose above the porch. This unusual detail was crossed out in the drawing (it is possible that by the emperor himself). In the final version, the dome of the bell tower was made hipped, and the head of the temple was changed to the traditional onion one.

On April 7, 1844, not far from the Petrovsky Palace, on the spit of Naryshkinskaya Alley and Zykovsky Proezd, the foundation stone of the temple took place. On August 24, 1847, the upper, Annunciation, temple was consecrated.

In 1899, the upper temple was re-painted, the iconostasis was gilded and the icons were restored, after which the temple was consecrated again on July 4th. On March 18, 1901, bells were installed in the bell tower. On November 29, 1904, the central altar was consecrated in honor of the Bogolyubsk Icon of the Mother of God.

The exact date of the closure of the temple is not known: it supposedly happened in 1934. The building was transferred to the Zhukovsky Academy, which was located in the former Petrovsky Palace, and turned into a warehouse for furniture and food. The temple suffered major destruction in the 1950s and 60s, when its fence and porch were dismantled, crosses and domes were removed, second tiers were added to the temple premises, and arches were laid. The bell tower was adapted to accommodate a hanging crane. All wooden church houses were destroyed, and the traffic police of the district police department was located in the brick clergy house. A beer bar was built on the street arrow.

On September 25, 1991, after long negotiations, the Air Force Academy vacated the temple building and transferred it to the Russian Orthodox Church. The church was assigned to the parish of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh. On September 29, the Divine Liturgy took place in the lower church for the first time in many years.

The church building was restored under the leadership of the parish architect S. Ya. Kuznetsov. The temple, chapels and bell tower were crowned with gilded domes. On the facade were placed mosaics by V.I. Antipkin - images of Moscow saints Philaret and Tikhon. The porch was restored and the white stone portal was rebuilt. In honor of the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ, a new bell was installed in the bell tower. A lot of work was done on the interior decoration of the temple, new iconostases were installed. The wall paintings on the lower floor have been restored, and a mosaic cross has been made in the dome of the upper church. In the upper church and the chapels of Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess and the Venerables Xenophon and Mary with their children, granite floors are laid out. The clergy house was reconstructed and a third floor was added.

On September 13, 1997, celebrations took place in honor of the 150th anniversary of the temple. Before the Divine Liturgy, Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus', Archbishops Arseny of Istra and Sergiy of Solnechnogorsk, as well as Bishop Alexy of Orekhovo-Zuevsky consecrated all four altars of the renewed church with full episcopal rites.

The temple was transferred to the ownership of the Russian Orthodox Church by order of the Territorial Administration of the Federal Property Management Agency in Moscow No. 249 dated March 16, 2022.

The Only Begotten Son of God, who came into the world, endured suffering and death on the cross, and by the command of the Heavenly Father rose victoriously from the grave! Jesus rose again and “death was swallowed up in victory” (1 Cor.

15:54)! He has risen - and the whole Universe rejoices! The Lord abolished hell and crushed the power of the devil. And all this was accomplished by the God who loves mankind, in order to adopt us as sons to Himself through Jesus Christ, in whom we have redemption through His Blood and forgiveness of sins (Eph. 1:4-5; 7).

Christ's victory over death is not only a spiritual, but also a physical reality. The Lord Jesus truly rose again in body for the salvation of all people. With His resurrection, death lost its irreversible character, and for those who believed in Christ it became birth into eternal life, a door that opens the path to heaven, to the Kingdom of God.

As St. Athanasius the Great wonderfully writes, from now on all believers in Christ trample on it as nothing, knowing quite well that when they die, they do not perish, but live and become incorruptible through the resurrection (The Word about the Incarnation of God the Word and His Coming to Us itself).

A striking example was shown to us by the new martyrs of the Russian Church, who fearlessly accepted the crown of confession during the years of persecution of the faith in the 20th century.

Moscow is home to a large number of Orthodox churches and temples, some of which survived the mass closures and reconstructions under the Soviet Union, some of which were rebuilt later. The first is the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Petrovsky Park. You can find it in the north of Moscow not far from the Petrovsky Travel Palace - this is a church near the Dynamo metro station.

History of creation

The history of the temple began in 1841, when the actual chamberlain Anna Dmitrievna Naryshkina turned to Emperor Nicholas I and Metropolitan Philaret with a request: she wanted to build a temple near her dacha.

Her dacha was located on the territory of Petrovsky Park, named after the palace. The latter was built in the second half of the 18th century and was the last stop when the imperial train entered Moscow.

After the war with Napoleon, the area around the palace was turned into a picturesque park, allocating 65 hectares of land for it. Thanks to its proximity to the imperial palace and convenient location, the place became popular for festivities, and in the first half of the 19th century, Russian aristocrats began to build dachas here.

Taking into account the need for a church near the dachas of the nobility, the emperor and metropolitan approved Naryshkina’s request.

Initially, the temple was supposed to be two-tiered, with 2 bell towers and galleries. However, it was too similar in appearance to the Petrovsky Palace, and Nicholas I did not approve of it.

The project was handed over to Fyodor Richter, but the emperor rejected his first project as well. The architect proposed to build a building based on the Kolomna Church of John the Baptist - with a pillar-shaped column and a parabolic dome.

Only the second project was accepted, and construction began in 1844, which was completed 3 years later. The money was allocated by Anna Dmitrievna. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the temple acquired new bells and an additional extension. The expansion was carried out with the money of parishioners.

In 1916-1917, the artist Borozdin painted the walls and vaults.

The documents indicate only the time from 1970 to 1990: a warehouse was located in the temple in which lifting equipment was stored, which is why it was necessary to dismantle part of the bell tower and remove the domes.

The porch and fence were also damaged - the latter was replaced with a fence with barbed wire.

However, already in September 1991, the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Academy of the Patriarchate was opened. Repair and restoration were completed by the beginning of September 1997—the 150th anniversary of the temple.

Temple today

Today the temple is operational and belongs to the Moscow city diocese. It belongs to the All Saints Deanery, which unites the churches of the Northern Administrative District of the capital. The building is a cultural heritage site.

In addition to divine services, the temple conducts classes for children and adults:

Sunday school for children from 5 years old and adults. Lessons include God's Law, English and German, painting, beadwork, drama, musical instruments (flute and piano) and singing (choir), as well as crafts and flower arranging.
Youth Gospel Meetings: Open to those under 40 years of age. At the meetings, participants study and discuss the Gospel and analyze life situations through it.
Club "Father's House": it holds meetings for the whole family. The club offers training in painting and graphics, choir singing, hand-to-hand combat and basic first aid in emergency situations. Developmental classes and games for children are also held, and regular master classes on various types of dances (folk, historical and ballroom) are held.
Singing school: classes study choral singing, solfeggio, liturgical charter and Church Slavonic language.
Dance studio for children (from 3 to 12 years old) and adults “Dance of Spring”: ballet, historical and ballroom dances are taught.

Also at the temple there are a gymnasium "Svet" and an orphanage "Peacock", a military-patriotic school, a children's camp (Orthodox), a temperance school, a sisterhood and a patronage service.

There is also an Orthodox bookstore at the temple, where you can buy books, magazines, icons, fabrics and various utensils (rosaries, crosses, magnets, lamps, dishes and more).

Appearance

The temple was built in a traditional style, has one onion-shaped golden dome and a hipped bell tower. It has two floors; services are held on the second floor in the summer, since there is no heating there.

The temple immediately attracts attention with its unusual color: the outside is painted with coral paint, on which modest and elegant decorations and columns of white stone stand out. There are also several icons made in mosaic style outside.

The baptismal temple is dedicated to the rector of the Church of Mitrofan of Voronezh on Khutorskaya, holy martyr Vladimir Medvedyuk, who was shot in 1937 at the Butovo training ground. Based
on the design of the architect S.Ya. Kuznetsov, on the territory of the parish, a baptismal temple was erected in the name of the holy martyr Vladimir Medvedyuk and the new martyrs and confessors of Russia, as well as an Orthodox educational center. There is a park on the church grounds.

The Annunciation Church forms a single parish with the Church of St. Mitrophan of Voronezh on Khutorskaya.
