To the holy places of Ryazan. Part 2
So, we continue our journey through the holy places of Ryazan. Having visited the Kremlin, we will go further, this time to the southern part of the city. In the past, coachmen lived here, near the Bolshoi Astrakhan Highway. This area was called Yamskaya Sloboda.
Temple in Yamskaya Sloboda
Now we are on Tsiolkovsky Street, where one of the most beautiful churches in the city, Nikolo-Yamskaya, is located. Here it is, elegant, red, in the style of late classicism, five-domed, with a three-tiered bell tower.
Nikolo-Yamskaya Church was built in 1788. For its construction, materials from a closed, dilapidated stone church, popularly known as “Nikola Mokry”, were used. From there, with all the utensils, they moved the iconostasis and the temple icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Donations for the new St. Nicholas Church were made by Ryazan coachmen, who considered St. Nicholas their patron, who took care of travelers. The coachmen made up mainly the parish of the temple.
In 1822, a bell tower appeared here; in the 30s and 40s of the 19th century, the temple was partially rebuilt. The domes of the grandiose brick building were visible from afar, and the ringing of bells echoed throughout the area. Near the church there was a spring with clean and tasty water.
Everything changed after the Soviet atheists came to power. In 1933, it was decided to close the Nikolo-Yamskaya Church, but the struggle for it continued for more than a year. The temple was closed in 1935, the bells, icons, and church utensils were requisitioned. The iconostasis was destroyed.
Here, in a holy place, they set up a brewery (later a plant for the production of beer and soft drinks): after all, there was a spring nearby. But the water from the source gradually began to dry up, and then disappeared completely. They wanted to open a restoration workshop in the temple building, but suddenly the spring began to flow again, so the workers were forced to leave the damp premises. As soon as the workshops were liquidated, the water at the source disappeared! Plans to demolish the building also did not come true. The Lord protected His temple.
In a dilapidated, rebuilt state, the Nikolo-Yamskaya Church was transferred to the Ryazan diocese in the fall of 1996. But already on December 4 of the same year the temple was consecrated. His recovery has begun. In 2004, the bells were solemnly raised to the bell tower, and the largest of them, cast in the Urals, with the icon of St. Nicholas, weighs 6 tons.
Today, the Nikolo-Yamskaya Church, which has received the status of a metochion of the St. John the Theologian Monastery, pleases with its splendor. One admires the skillful, elegant iconostasis, and in it is the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, as well as the Murom Icon of the Mother of God, revered in the local region. There are many shrines in the temple: a carved sculptural image of the patron saint of the temple, St. Nicholas, large images of the Mother of God “Sovereign” and the “Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos”, icons of Saints Spyridon of Trimythous and Luke of Crimea with particles of their relics, Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea and Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene with part of her relics .
Of course, you will not fully feel the atmosphere of the temple outside of the service. I was lucky enough to attend the liturgy here on the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Although it was a weekday, many worshipers gathered. Everything turned out to be a real holiday: the reverent singing of the choir, the concentrated common prayer, and the heartfelt sermon of the priest. And then - congratulations on the 70th birthday of one of the parishioners. The priest personally sings “Many Years” (the people join in) and sincerely wishes the birthday girl a double anniversary. She, without being confused, answers: “Only in the temple.” Everyone is happy, and even we, visiting Muscovites, feel at home. Here is such a wonderful picture from the life of the parish.
Surely, today’s Nikolo-Yamskaya Church is “warmed up” by the prayers of the beloved Orthodox saint, Blessed Lyubov of Ryazan, because her relics rest here on the left choir. People simply call this servant of God “Lyubushka.”
Blessed darling
If High Hierarch Vasily of Ryazan can be considered the holy owner of the city, then Lyubushka is undoubtedly the holy owner of Ryazan. And if you find yourself in the city, hurry to Tsiolkovsky Street to venerate her relics.
From the last decades of the 19th century until the mid-1920s, Lyubushka was for the people of Ryazan a caring helper, a prayer book, a prophetess who reminded them of God and the Church, and the power of faith. At that time of social upheaval, the extinction of faith, and then the obvious attack of the state on the Church, blessed ones were erected by God, who for the sake of Christ voluntarily abandoned the generally accepted way of life, appearing to others as if devoid of reason. But through spiritual achievement they acquired humility, meekness, patience and protected entire cities with their prayers. In St. Petersburg, blessed Matronushka the Barefoot lived, in Tomsk - blessed Domna Karpovna, in Tsaritsyn (present-day Volgograd) - blessed Martha, in Voronezh - blessed Theoktista... And in Ryazan lived Lyubov Semyonovna Sukhanovskaya (Lyubushka).
She was born into the family of a poor Pronsky landowner in 1852. Having lost their breadwinner father, the Sukhanovskys lived barely making ends meet. But they lived piously. And young Lyubushka courageously bore the cross of illness and weakened body for fifteen years, so that she could neither walk nor stand on her feet.
However, the time for a miraculous healing came: the saint and wonderworker Nicholas, whom she especially revered, appeared to Lyubushka and ordered her to stand up and walk. And don’t just walk around—take upon yourself the feat of foolishness for Christ’s sake. Thus began the mysterious, hidden spiritual life of the Ryazan blessed one. For several years she carried out the unusual feat of being a shutter in the house. And then she came out to people with prayer, care, attention, help, good advice and an allegorical prophecy of future events.
The merchants invited Lyubushka to come into their shops and did not even prevent her from taking something just like that - on the contrary, then success in trading for the day was guaranteed. The beggars knew that she would share everything she had with them. The blessed one was invited to weddings so that the newlyweds would be happy. She was asked about the future. But Lyubushka, by the command of God, allegorically (and sometimes directly) prophesied without any requests: it is obvious that a person should be ready for tests on the path of life and acceptance of God’s will for himself.
Lyubushka was kind and affectionate with everyone. This radiant kindness was also captured in the surviving lifetime photograph of the blessed one. They say that the smile almost never left her face. Lyubushka wore colored dresses, and on her head was a blue or more often a pink scarf. She loved the jubilant pink color and joyfully testified to Christ with her entire appearance. Yes, there is revolution in the country, devastation, hunger, suffering, and in the hearts of people there is uncertainty and fear of the future. But with Christ, Lyubushka testified with her feat, a person can endure everything and find true happiness.
She went to the Lord on February 21, 1920. Despite the difficult times of the civil war, so many people gathered for the funeral that local authorities, fearing unrest, called in the police for protection. The nation's love for the blessed one, oddly enough, became a revelation for the deceased's sister, Olga, who during her lifetime did not understand Lyubushkin's feat. They buried the saint of God in a coffin lined with pink fabric - this was her request. The joy of earthly life in walking before God was to be replaced by the joy of meeting the Creator in Heaven.
How many people were blessed by the blessed one during her lifetime! And how many people she helped after death! People went to her grave at the Sorrowful Cemetery, and their problems were miraculously resolved, amazing healings took place. On January 12, 1987, Blessed Lyubov was included in the Council of Ryazan Saints as a locally revered saint. First, a chapel was built on her grave, and then, on June 23, 1998, the relics of the holy blessed Lyubov of Ryazan were transferred to the Nikolo-Yamskaya Church. They rest there in a shrine lined with pink fabric inside.
Along Lyubushkin's places
Part of the relics of Saint Blessed Lyubov remained in the chapel, built on her grave in 1992 through the diligence of the then abbot of the St. John the Theological Monastery, Archimandrite Abel (Makedonov). People still come here to pray to the wonderful Ryazan saint.
The Sorrowful Cemetery is a fifteen-minute walk from the Nikolo-Yamsky Church. We go south, cross the railway tracks. In the distance you can see the domes of the cemetery church in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow.” And Lyubushkina's chapel is to the left of the temple, a few steps from the main entrance. Bright, elegant, of course, pink (see photo). On the facade, St. Nicholas, Blessed Xenia and, of course, Lyubushka herself are depicted from different sides. Above is the Protection of the Mother of God. This picture is unusual - a pink chapel among dark gravestones and monuments. Lyubushka preaches here too about God, affirming the victory of life in Christ over death, and about the flourishing Heavenly City in which she now lives. And he calls not to lose heart, but to rejoice and trust in God’s great mercy.
We will also visit another place associated with the name of Blessed Lyubov of Ryazan. To do this, we will have to return to the city center, in the vicinity of the Kremlin. Now we are on a quiet Ryazan street with a characteristic name - Zatinnaya. It’s hard to believe that a few tens of meters from here is the modern center of Ryazan. Here, on Zatinnaya, there is no rush or rushing cars. Old wooden houses, wildly blooming mallow and tiger lily bushes create the atmosphere of a cozy province.
On Zatinnaya, in house No. 646, from 1903 until her death, Lyubushka lived with her mother and sister. On the same street there is the ancient Church of the Entrance to Jerusalem, whose parishioners were the Sukhanovskys. Nearby stood the house of their spiritual father, the cleric of the Church of John of Dobrotvorsky.
The brick five-domed tented Church of the Entrance to Jerusalem was built in 1680 on the site of a burnt wooden temple. The street on which it was located was named Jerusalemskaya, and later was annexed to Zatinnaya.
The temple was opened until 1935. Then, for some time, there was a warehouse for storing grain, then - an artel for the production of furniture and utility rooms for a furniture factory. In 1992, the Church of the Entrance to Jerusalem was transferred to the Church, and its restoration began.
The restored church is very cozy, there are remarkable icons - St. Spyridon of Trimifuntsky, St. Simeon the Myrrh-Streaming and, of course, Blessed Lyubov of Ryazan with part of her relics. And there is also an image of the locally revered holy righteous Sophrony of Iberd (1825-1914) with a particle of relics. I would like to tell you separately about this wonderful saint, a native of the Sapozhkovsky district of the Ryazan province.
“...Thousands of souls will be saved around you”
To those who came to him for advice, Righteous Sophrony repeated the instructions of St. Seraphim of Sarov: “My joy! Acquire a peaceful spirit, and not only you, but thousands of souls will be saved around you.” He once met the monk while still a child: his parents decided to take their God-loving son to the famous Sarov ascetic. He invited the boy to his cell and talked with him, and Sophrony’s impressions of the meeting remained forever. And in his life he truly embodied the instruction of St. Seraphim, so beloved by him,
Since childhood, gravitating toward solitude, Sophrony, with his parents' blessing, got married. But his desire for solitude remained, and a few years later, having received his wife’s consent, he left his village. He found a deserted place on the banks of the Iberd River, built himself a dugout and began a new life, in solitude and prayer.
After some time, rumors about the hermit spread throughout the area, and, fearing human glory, Sophronius disappeared from this place for three years. And then he returned and began to equip the monastery, according to Divine instructions. With the permission of the authorities, a chapel was erected near the village of Shchurov, Ryazhsky district, and with it an almshouse for orphans. They built and consecrated a temple in the name of Alexander Nevsky in 1892. All work was supervised by Sophrony, who still lived in the dugout. The almshouse later became a women's community, and in 1907 - the Alexander Nevsky women's monastery.
Numerous pilgrims flocked to Elder Sophrony for advice and help, because he acquired the gifts of clairvoyance, prayerful help and healing. Without accepting monasticism, he nevertheless left everything for the sake of Christ and labored so strictly that after his death chains were found on the deceased that had literally grown into his body. The righteous elder also predicted the future fate of the monastery.
After the October Revolution of 1917, the Alexander Nevsky Monastery was closed and completely destroyed. But the memory of its founder did not disappear; people still came to his grave and to the well he dug and were miraculously healed. And then a joyful time came: in 1998, the Alexander Nevsky Church was rebuilt on the same foundation, and on February 7, 2000, the righteous Sophrony of Iberd was glorified as a saint. Numerous healings are now taking place from his relics; through his prayerful intercession before the Lord, everyday problems are resolved. Numerous pilgrims flock here to the monastery surrounded by forest one and a half hundred kilometers from Ryazan. Thus, according to the behest of St. Seraphim, one who has acquired a peaceful spirit even after death leads to the salvation of thousands of people.

Life of Lyubov Sukhanovskaya
The Sukhanovsky family was the most ordinary, of the bourgeois class. Love was the third child of the pious spouses Semyon and Maria. Her fate turned out to be unusual: soon after birth it became clear that the girl, apparently, would never be able to walk.
Blzh. Lyubov Ryazanskaya

On the third day after birth, the future ascetic was baptized by priest Pyotr Pavlov, the father of the future physiologist, Ivan Pavlov.
St. Nicholas Church, where Lyubushka began her church life, was one of the many churches in Ryazan dedicated to the saint. Residents of the city had a special love for the saint of God: St. Nicholas “Wet”, “Noble”, “Yamskoy” - these are just some of the popular nicknames for the churches of St. Nicholas.
The same one where Lyuba was baptized was called, as if as a joke, “Nikola-Dolgoshey”, because of the very high bell tower. They are used to addressing the saint as one of their own, a loved one, “in a simple way.” Apparently, this is how Lyuba prayed to him along with her parents. She asked to be healed of her illness, but there are miracles in the world.
Useful materials
But there was no answer to the petitions. Years passed, the girl lay motionless, unable to get out of bed, over which hung the icon of her beloved saint. What Lyubushka talked to him about, as she asked, without giving up hope - the life of the ascetic is silent about all this. But one day, when the girl was 15, a miracle happened.
“Get up, Lyuba!”
Not in a dream, in reality, St. Nicholas appeared to her and granted healing. The family didn’t see anything, didn’t hear anything, just suddenly Love. Having not taken a single step in life, she left the room on her own two feet. The mother gasped: “Is that you?” And the daughter simply replied that what happened was the work of St. Nicholas:
“I prayed to him all the time, and then he appeared to me and said: “Get up, Lyuba, go and act like a fool.” I got to my feet, and he became invisible, disappeared somewhere...”
The shocked mother rejoiced, but also doubted whether it was a joke, the saint blessed a very young girl for the most difficult feat of self-humiliation. Isn’t this already a temptation? With doubts, the woman went to the priest. After listening to her story, he, after thinking, did not order to interfere with his daughter. The miracle is obvious, which means that this blessing must be performed with all precision.
"Test yourself!"
Who could tell the young girl how to fulfill the command of the saint, what exactly to do? Knowing about the obvious miracle, not a single priest would dare to do this. But more than once during prayer, especially at church services, the thought came to Lyubov, as if inspired from the outside, to prepare for foolishness by seclusion. A feat similar to that of a monk? A laywoman, just a girl? The mother again went to the priest, but again the priest did not tell her to contradict her daughter.
For 3 whole years, Lyubov settled behind the stove, in a narrow wall of about 2 sq.m. The life of the blessed one is silent about how her spiritual growth progressed over these years. When the time came, she went out onto the streets of Ryazan.
Blessed
Contemporaries recalled that outwardly Lyubushka did not seem to resemble a holy fool: she was dressed cleanly, although modestly, friendly, smiling. Unless he walks the streets all day long, no one knows where he eats or what he eats.
She went into merchants' shops and took food without asking. Then it turned out that successful trading was going on all day. How not to remember another blessed one beloved by the people - Ksenia of Petersburg, to whom merchants also offered goods, and coachmen tried to give them at least a few meters, knowing that the very presence of a saint was already a blessing.
And sometimes the holy fool will come up, look you in the eyes, and say something incomprehensible, so that they will laugh at her: some kind of stupidity! Only later will it turn out that either she has exposed a person’s secret sin, or she has foreseen the future. Many such cases were recorded during the saint’s lifetime.
Paper figures
Lyubushka often, approaching someone, silently gave him a figurine cut out of paper. Ryazan residents noticed that such “gifts” speak of future life events:
- wreath - there will be a wedding;
- horse, steam locomotive - for departure;
- others received a figurine of a coffin - the blessed one asked them to prepare for the exodus.
Many, fearing the seer, hid the scissors. Then she tore the paper with her hands and still conveyed the will of God to the person.
Shy Varvara
One girl was very afraid of the blessed one and avoided meeting her. Although Varya was pious, she was afraid that she would expose her secret sin, or maybe even predict death. When she saw Lyubushka, she was frightened and closed the door so that the saint could pass by.
One day, eyewitnesses say, the seer, knowing Varvara’s condition, came to her and gave her a chocolate candy, instructing her to eat it without fail. Since then, all the girl’s fears have been left behind.
Ruined wedding
The blessed one was often invited to celebrations, believing that her presence bestowed God's blessing. Once she was at a wedding. But suddenly in the middle of the celebration she said:
“The groom is a bitter drunkard, and the bride will not be happy with him!”
The guests, parents - everyone was outraged by the holy fool’s act, so much so that she had to leave. Only after a while it turned out: Lyubushka was right, the family life of the young couple did not work out because of her husband’s drunkenness.
Prophecies
The saint’s prophecies are known, which concerned not individual people, but the whole of Russia. In the Spirit, Love foresaw the terrible events to come - wars, revolutions, persecution of the Church.
- She predicted the closure of the monastery of the Kazan Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Long before the revolutionary years, in prosperous years, Lyuba more than once told the nuns that the monastery would be dispersed.
- One day she wandered around Ryazan, constantly repeating: “The walls of Jericho are falling!”; Then no one laughed at her words, the residents only tried to find out what the saint wanted to say, but Lyubushka was silent. This was in 1917.
Demise
Three years after the godless revolution, the beginning of the civil war, Lyubov Semyonovna Sukhanovskaya, blessed Lyubushka, left this world, going to the Kingdom of Heaven. It happened on February 21, 1920, in a small house where Lyubushka lived with her sister and elderly mother. Her last test in earthly life was severe poverty.
People engaged in the struggle for survival during the war and famine were unable to help their prayer book, the benefactress of the entire city, although her spiritual father, priest John Dobrotvorsky, tried to do this more than once.
But at the funeral, when the modest coffin, upholstered in pink fabric (the blessed one’s favorite color), was carried to the cemetery, there were so many people that the authorities called a police detachment, fearing unrest. But the Ryazan residents had no time for that. They buried their saint with silent sorrow, saying goodbye to their loved one, without whom the city itself was still unthinkable.
Interesting Facts
- In the Middle Ages, the monastery survived several raids by the Crimean Tatars. And the monks decided to move to a quieter place - closer to the border guard, to Mikhailovsky district. But one day they suddenly discovered that their favorite icon of John the Evangelist had disappeared from the new church. They began to search and found it in the old place, among the branches of an old oak tree. This means this is a sign, the monks decided - and returned to Poshupovo. At the site where the icon was found, the Theological Cathedral was erected - initially wooden, and in the Middle Ages rebuilt in stone. He still stands in the same place.

- They say that Ivan the Terrible’s first and beloved wife, Anastasia, gave birth to a child while sailing past the monastery along the Oka River. As a sign of gratitude, the king showered the monastery with gifts.
- The monastery has its own apiary, bakery, and dairy shop. About 20 monks live here.
Temples of the monastery
• Holy Trinity Cathedral. The most ancient temple in the monastery. Its foundation dates back to 1685. It is not distinguished by outstanding architecture, but the building is strong, taking into account the loads on it that were associated with use during Soviet times (perestroika, extensions, and so-called reconstruction). Worship services began there in 2000.
• The Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh is a unique building, a warm temple (felt is used as filler in the walls). Divine services have been held there since 1995.
• Small Church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God “Znamenie-Korchemnaya” and Sts. of the Blessed Princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom is located on the second floor in the Holy Gates. Services there began in October 2000.
(Ryazan, Moskovskoe highway)
The time of foundation of the Ryazan Holy Trinity Monastery is not known with accuracy. In legend, it is associated with the visit of Ryazan by the Monk Sergius of Radonezh, who had the goal of reconciling two famous contemporary princes: the Grand Duke of Moscow Dmitry Donskoy and the Grand Duke of Ryazan Oleg Ivanovich. This visit by the Monk Sergius to Ryazan, which at that time was called Pereyaslavl of Ryazan, as is known from the chronicles, took place in 1386.
In the XIV-XVI centuries. The Ryazan principality was repeatedly raided by the Tatar-Mongol hordes, so all “fortresses and other records” related to monastic history were destroyed. The first subsequent mention of the monastery occurs only at the end of the 16th century. The monastery reached its greatest prosperity in the 19th century.
The architectural feature of the monastery was a four-tiered bell tower, which was visible far away when approaching Ryazan. It had eight bells. The largest, cast in 1862, weighed 4.24 tons. The second, polyeleus, cast in 1905 on July 15 - 1.1 tons.
The monastery was surrounded by a fence 427 meters long and with five round towers and two entrances. On the north side (from the railway) on the pediment of the gate there was a fresco depicting St. Sergius blessing the brethren. The southern gate is flanked by two buildings of two floors each - a fraternity and a refectory. The Bratsky building was built in 1855, the refectory in 1903. The transfer of the monastery to the Church began in 1995. By the decision of the Holy Synod, Abbot Andrei (Krekhov) was appointed abbot of the newly created Holy Trinity Monastery.
The number of brethren of the monastery: in the priesthood - 10 people, novices - 11 people, laborers - 20 people.
There is a small hotel for pilgrims; visitors are offered meals and, if possible, overnight accommodation. The monastery has a library with a book collection of about 1,400 copies. There are texts of the Holy Scriptures, the works of St. fathers, liturgical literature, books on various areas of theological knowledge and other books for spiritual and edifying reading, periodicals.
The monastery also has two church-monasteries: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in the village. Abryutino and the Church of St. ap. John the Theologian in the village. Plakhino. There is a monastery economic yard in the village. Ekimovka, Ryazan region.
Divine services
Divine services are held daily: in the morning at 8.30, in the evening at 17.00. On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, early mass is celebrated in the morning - at 6.15 (on weekdays) or at 6.30 (Saturdays and Sundays). Following the example of the Holy Trinity-Sergius Lavra, akathists are read during evening services every week:
- on Sunday - to St. Sergius, Abbot of Radonezh;
- on Friday - to the Mother of God “Rejoice Unbrided Bride”;
- on Wednesday - to the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God.
The monastery holds unction twice a week: on Friday evening after the evening service and on Saturday at 7.30.
