Icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer”
(Greek Ελευθερώτρια) Memory October 17, April 4 [1], October 1 (Greek [2]), October 28 (Greek [3])
In the icon, the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted holding on her left hand the Infant God, blessing with her right hand and holding a scroll in her left hand.
17th century icon. Tradition says that at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries this icon was carefully hidden by the Athonite ascetic Constantius Theodulus, and then, after his death, he handed it over “inheritedly” to the Greek elder Martinian, who arrived on Athos in 1821. Having lived in the Panteleimon Monastery for twenty years, one day Martinian, at the call of his heart and with the consent of the abbot, went to travel with sermons throughout Greek cities and villages, taking with him the image of the Mother of God. Thanks to this, in 1841, residents of the village of Mavronia [4] prayed in front of the icon for deliverance from the locusts, because of whose raids they had been suffering from crop failure and hunger for many years. A miracle happened, and a day later there was not a single harmful insect left in the entire area. In addition, the mother of one dying boy, praying in front of the icon, asked for a miracle, thanks to which the child was brought back to life. Martinian lived in Mavronia for about two years, and during this time the holy icon, carefully preserved by him, became famous for the miraculous healings of the demoniac and other sick people, who flocked to the village to turn with fervent prayers to the Mother of God and ask Her for mercy before Her miraculous image.
Having returned to Athos to his native Russik monastery, the schema-monk Martinian died in 1884, leaving the icon to the monastery, where it was kept and attracted many pilgrims until 1889. After which, by the decision of the rector of the Panteleimon monastery, Archimandrite Macarius, unanimously approved by the brethren, the icon of the Mother of God was sent with envoys to the New Athos monastery in Russia so that it would “ shed miraculous light on Russian Orthodox people
.»
The icon was transferred to the New Athos Monastery on July 20, 1889, and a festival was established in its honor on October 17. When a festival in honor of this icon was held for the first time in the New Athos Simon-Kananitskaya monastery, a storm washed up more than a ton of fish on the shore near the monastery. At the beginning of the 21st century, the icon is preserved in the monastery. Covered with a gilded chasuble with enamel, it is embedded in another larger icon, on which it is held in the hands of the full-length depictions of the Apostle Simon the Canaanite and the Great Martyr Panteleimon the Healer.
A miraculous copy of the icon of the Mother of God the Deliverer is available in Vienna, in the Vienna Cathedral of St. Nicholas.
History of the icon
Celebration date:
- April 30
- October 30
The image begins its history in 1841; it was from this year that believers began to glorify it. They say that thanks to her, one Greek settlement got rid of a locust invasion. After such a miracle, the Mother of God began to attract many pilgrims and pilgrims, but the guardian of the shrine categorically did not like this. And Elder Martinian transported the image to Athos, where he settled in the monastery of St. Panteleimon. But since 1889, the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles” has been located in Russia, namely in the Caucasus in the New Athos Simon-Kananitskaya monastery.
The image was brought by Alexander III. According to legend, the train on which the royal family was traveling met with a disaster. But all members of the clan were not harmed. All miracles were associated with the face of the Virgin Mary.
In ancient times, prayers were read before the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from Troubles” for salvation and healing, from the invasion of the same locusts, during disasters and catastrophes, and for solving problems and everyday difficulties.
What do they pray for in front of the icon?
The prayer in front of the “Deliverer” icon is read by believers at the moment of physical and moral trouble, when they need to save their body or soul from impending misfortune. They turn to the Mother of God:
- get rid of epidemics of various diseases;
- prevention of mass disasters that threaten nature;
- for mental disorders;
- salvation from dangers threatening the traveler and the village;
- to get rid of bad habits that negatively affect family relationships and a person’s moral character;
- when sadness and melancholy overcome (we also recommend prayers for despondency, melancholy and depression);
- to prevent troubles for yourself and your loved ones.
When a loved one suffers from alcoholism, drug addiction, or gambling addiction, he cannot independently get out of the devilish networks that have been thrown over him. Relatives pray for him, at the initial stage, until the victim gains the strength to independently get rid of the troubles of those suffering and is able to pray before the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer of Troubles.”

Description of the icon of the Mother of God the Deliverer: The glorification of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverer” began in 1841, when, through prayers before it, one of the Greek provinces got rid of an invasion of locusts. The miracles emanating from the icon of the Mother of God attracted many pilgrims to it, which burdened the guardian of the shrine, Elder Martinian, a former inhabitant of one of the Athos monasteries. Tired of human attention, the elder, together with the icon of the Mother of God, returned to Athos and settled in the monastery of the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon. In 1889, the abbot of the monastery donated the miraculous icon of the Mother of God to Russia for the New Athos Simon-Kananitsky monastery opened in the Caucasus.
The Icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer” was carried by Emperor Alexander III on the train, returning to the capital with his family after a vacation in the south. As you know, the royal train met with a disaster, but the emperor himself and his household miraculously remained alive and unharmed. Members of the royal family associated their miraculous salvation with the patronage and intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. In memory of the miraculous salvation of the Russian emperor and his family, the celebration in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer” was established on October 17.
Some ancient images on the maforia of the Virgin Mary depict five-pointed stars - pentagrams. Since ancient times, the pentagram has meant “Chosenness, duty, loyalty.” Unfortunately, starting from the 16th century, the pentagram began to be used by Masonic organizations, and subsequently by communist ones, which led to the emergence of an ambiguous attitude towards this ancient pious symbol.

There is another version of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverer,” which depicts the holy apostle Simon the Canaanite and the healer Panteleimon holding the icon of the Mother of God against the background of the New Athos Simon-Canaanite Monastery.
Before the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverer” they pray for the healing of those suffering from demonic possession, from an invasion of locusts, for the healing of mental and physical infirmities in times of disaster, for the sending of grace-filled power in resolving difficult circumstances.

How the miracle of the appearance of the Icon happened
Ekaterina Chugunova, an Orthodox girl, had the Mother of God appear in her dreams 3 times asking her to find her icon. At the same time, she pointed to the ravine on the road to the village Temple in the village of Tashla.
Catherine and her friend went to the indicated place and again saw the Angels carrying the Icon. In the ravine, raking the earth with her hands, she discovered a small Icon of the Mother of God. At the place where she was found, a spring began to flow.
After this, together with the gathered people who had learned about the miracle, the girls carried the Icon to the Temple, where they placed it on a lectern. However, the Temple Priest was very distrustful of what was happening. And the next morning the Icon was not in the Temple. The watchman guarding the Temple said that he saw lightning flash from the Temple towards the ravine.
