Akathist is a prayer, but a special prayer. It is not required to be read in churches. But people, following an inner spiritual call, often read akathists on their own or surrounded by loved ones.
One of the most popular akathists is the akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary. And this is not surprising, because it is the Mother of God who is especially loved in Orthodoxy.
People turn to her with various problems - both everyday and deep spiritual ones. But how to correctly read the akathist to the Mother of God? Let's be clear.
Saturday Akathist in the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medvedkovo
The roots of the Akathists are in Ancient Greece
The very concept of “akathist” refers us to ancient Greek culture. Antiquity is the creativity of its descendants, from sculpture to philosophy. Poetry was no exception. It became so firmly ingrained in people’s consciousness, thanks to ancient Greek authors, that it was even reflected in prayers.
People of the times of Socrates and Plato composed hymns to the gods. The Greek pantheon remains history. But the tradition of praising higher powers has been preserved, including in Christianity. Akathist is a form of praising the saints, Christ or the Virgin Mary.
Akathist
translated from Greek - a song during which one does not sit down
If you translate “akathist” from Greek, you get something like “a song during which one does not sit down.” That is, a sign of respect for higher powers.
There are at least 8 possible authors of the Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary
There are several candidates who may turn out to be the authors of the great akathist. From ancient manuscripts it is known that under the walls of Constantinople they sang “To the Mounted Voivode...” This is a hymn to the Mother of God, thanking her for saving this Christian center from enemy troops. But this was not the same akathist yet.
In 626, almost the text that is used today appeared. He expressed gratitude to the Mother of God on behalf of Constantinople. Over time, this version was edited. For example, “Your city” was replaced with “Your servants,” and the text “To the chosen Voivode, victorious...” was used as the opening.
626
this year the text of the akathist appeared, which is still used today
History does not know who authored the final version, but there are versions:
- Reverend Roman the Sweet Singer is a saint. He dreamed of singing in church, but did not have a suitable voice. Everything changed when the Mother of God dreamed of him and gave him a scroll to eat. Roman Sladkopevets became the best singer in Constantinople. He is the author of many Christian hymns, so his authorship is quite likely;
Roman Sladkopevets is the most likely author of the akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary
- George of Pisidia is a bishop who ascetically defended Christian traditions during the period of iconoclasm;
- Patriarch Sergius I of Constantinople is an influential historical figure. Even the Byzantine emperor Iracius I listened to the opinion. Sergius I was a multifaceted personality and one of the people who ruled the empire;
- Apollinaris of Laodicea was a bishop and theologian who was strongly influenced by ancient culture. The author of a teaching that goes against the traditions of the church;
- Deacon George Pisida is known primarily as a poet. He wrote mainly on historical topics;
- Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople - revered as a saint, author of several theological works;
- Nun Cassia of Constantinople - poetess, hymn writer, composer, founder of the monastery in Constantinople;
- Patriarch Photius is the author of many works on theology, the initiator of the first attempts to baptize Russia.
There is also an opinion that the akathist is of Syrian origin.
Origin of the icon
It is not known when the image of the Mother of God, which is called “The Covering One,” was painted. The date of acquisition of the icon is also unknown. Its description appeared in historical documents from the date of the founding of the Seraphim-Znamensky monastery. Mother Tamar (in the world Tamara Aleksandrovna Mardzhanova) considered him the guardian and protector of the monastery, in which she served as abbess.
The image of the “Covering” Mother of God was in the schema-abbess’s cell. Kneeling down in front of him, Mother Tamar offered up fervent prayers for the Fatherland and the whole world, turning to the Queen of Heaven. The history of the founding of the monastery itself is quite unusual, so many Orthodox believers testify that they feel special grace when they are on its territory. The foundation of the monastery took place in 1910; the newly created monastery was consecrated by the future martyr, Metropolitan Vladimir.
The spiritual design of the monastery was entrusted to a fifth generation clergyman - Bishop Arseny. From the day of its foundation until its closure in 1924, the Seraphim-Znamenskaya Monastery was the place where he performed his great spiritual exploits. Bishop Arseny became the author of the service and akathist in honor of the “Covering” Icon of the Mother of God.
Monastic life in the monastery was restored in 2001. After closing, the image of the Mother of God was temporarily moved to the Novospassky Monastery, and after the opening of the monastery, it was returned to the place where it is still located.
For the first time, the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was read as a church hymn in the Blachernae Church in 860
The great akathist was read for the first time in the very church where the miracle happened about a century later.
860
this year the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was read for the first time in the Blachernae Church
In answer to the prayers, the Mother of God appeared and covered the people in the church with a veil.
The reason for reading the akathist was the victory over the Russian fleet that was besieging the city.
According to legend, thanks to the robe of the Mother of God, a storm arose, which quickly scattered the enemy ships.
Another one was built on the ruins of the Blachernae church, but it was here that the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was read for the first time as a church hymn
We read about this event in The Tale of Bygone Years:
“... and with songs they brought out the divine robe of the Holy Mother of God, and soaked its floor in the sea.
At that time there was silence and the sea was calm, but then suddenly a storm arose with the wind, and huge waves arose again, scattering the ships of the godless Russians, and washed them to the shore, and broke them, so that few of them managed to avoid this disaster and return home "
The Tale of Bygone Years on ABC. RU
In memory of this miracle, a holiday was established - Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, also known as Akathist Saturday. By the way, later the Russians themselves adopted Christianity.
The akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is great, because through it one addresses Jesus
The Akathist of the Most Holy Theotokos is the very first religious work in this form. Everything that is written after is an imitation of him. That is why a specific date is set aside for the reading of this akathist in the church charter. And all other akathists to the Mother of God or one of the saints are not required in the services.
This akathist is very important for Christianity. The Veneration of the Most Holy Theotokos itself is of considerable importance here. It stems from the idea of the Annunciation. That is, that the word became flesh.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father.”
(John 1:14)
The Mother of God demonstrates an example of humility by agreeing with God's plan:
“Behold, the Servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.”
(Luke 1:38)
The Annunciation is one of the central images in the akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary
This may seem like a small thing. But there is a very deep thought here. All praise for the Mother of God is really centered on Christ. The Akathist gracefully plays out the joy of the church at the condescension of Jesus Christ through the veneration of the Mother of God.
Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos before Her icon called “The Covering One”
Kontakion 1 To the Exalted Voivode, Queen of Heaven and Earth, who gave us the wonderful icon “The Covering One,” we offer thanksgiving singing. You, as the Compassionate Mother, do not reject our prayer, but be pleased to accept it, worthy to cry out to You like this: Rejoice, Lady of the world, covering us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Ikos 1 Saint Anna heard the angelic voice saying: You will conceive and give birth to a Daughter, the Blessed Mary, with Her all the tribes of the earth will be blessed and salvation will come to the whole world. This is led by a cry to the Mother of God: Rejoice, Mother of the Son of God; Rejoice, Immaculate Virgin. Rejoice, Thou who gave birth to the Savior of our souls; Rejoice, you who have reconciled sinners with God. Rejoice, inconceivable container; Rejoice, you carried all the Divinities. Rejoice, God's favor towards mortals; Rejoice, mortals have boldness towards God. Rejoice, most honorable Cherub; Rejoice, most glorious without comparison Seraphim. Rejoice, trampling on hell and death; Rejoice, gift of eternal life. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 2 Seeing Your holy parents Joachim and Anna, as You are, the Most Pure One, the Blessed Fruit, they gave thanks to God and before the doors of the temple made a vow to dedicate You to the Lord, singing to Him: Alleluia. Ikos 2 You yourself have acquired perfect intelligence, O Mother of God, having been brought up in the Holy of Holies, so you do not cease to make wise and enlighten with the light of God’s understanding and all Christians cry out to You like this: Rejoice, you who lead to the knowledge of God; Rejoice, you who turn those seduced to the light of truth. Rejoice, you who instill the fear of God in hearts, Rejoice, you who teach reverence for the holy thing. Rejoice, inspiring zeal for salvation; Rejoice, spiritual insensitivity is overwhelming in us. Rejoice, thou who inspirest to venerate the temples of God; Rejoice, you find inspiring joy in them. Rejoice, you who arouse the thirst for Holy Communion; Rejoice, igniting faith and love for God. Rejoice, Champion of purity and chastity; Rejoice, good Christian life to the Helper. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 3 The Power of the Most High Autumn You, O Gracious One, when Archangel Gabriel preached the good news of the seedless conception from You of the Son of God, the Savior of the world. Having received this good news with humility, as a servant of the Lord, you cried out to God: Alleluia.
Ikos 3 Having in the womb of Christ the Giver of Life, you rose, O Blessed One, to Your little girl, the righteous Elizabeth, and “kissed both mothers,” rejoicing in God our Savior. For this reason, as the source of holy joy, we cry out to Tisitsa: Rejoice, who makes our hard life easier, Rejoice, who drives away cruel troubles and misfortunes. Rejoice, you who save us from spiritual anguish and despondency; Rejoice, thou who quickest to help the helpless. Rejoice, you who show God's trials for good; Rejoice, you who provide consolation in suffering itself. Rejoice, for by You evil undertakings are stopped; Rejoice, for through you our good desires are fulfilled. Rejoice, Thy fire of Motherhood warming the love of the soul; Rejoice, you who illuminate us with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Rejoice, Mother of all the grieving and oppressed; Rejoice, zealous Intercessor of the Christian world. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 4 A storm of bewilderment confuses my mind, so that I can praise You with unworthy lips, Most Holy Virgin, for Your great help to us. At the same time, magnifying Your countless mercies, I humbly sing to the Almighty God: Alleluia.
Ikos 4 Hearing the shepherd angels in Bethlehem singing the Nativity of Christ, they flowed into the cave and found the Mother of God there, holding the Eternal Child in her arms. With them, in spiritual joy, we also say to You, as a common Mother: Rejoice, raising babies; Rejoice, Giver of meaning to the youths. Rejoice, O youthful Leader; Rejoice, glory of the good virgins. Rejoice, you who enrich men and women with wisdom; Rejoice, you who endow women with shame and meekness. Rejoice, sweet peace of reverent elders; Rejoice, quiet refuge for God-loving elders. Rejoice, fair marriages have been established; Rejoice, enmity, quarrels between half-blooded people are destroyed. Rejoice, blessing to pious families; Madam, praise and exaltation of virginity. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men. Kontakion 5 You appear as a God-bearing star, O Queen of Heaven, to all who come running under Your omnipotent protection and continually cry out to God with tenderness of heart: Alleluia.
Ikos 5 Seeing the righteous Simeon Thee, who came with the Infant Jesus in the temple to introduce herself to the Lord, he said: “A weapon will pierce your very soul,” implying Your Mother’s suffering for Your Divine Son and for all those persecuted for His Holy Name. For this reason we call Ti: Rejoice, shepherds of the Church, reviled by the world, glorification; Rejoice, encouragement to God's ridiculed servants. Rejoice, defense of those who stand for the truth; Rejoice, relief for those tormented by bitter labor. Rejoice, for you free the innocently condemned; Rejoice, for you will soon return from exile. Rejoice, you who graciously visit those who sit in chains; Rejoice, you who delight the patient sufferers with the anticipation of bliss. Rejoice, softening the hearts of evil people who are at enmity against us; Rejoice, thou who destroyest evil counsel and deceit. Rejoice, you who protect us from robbers along the way; Rejoice, you who lead thieves and secret murderers away from our homes. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 6 The preachers of Your grace-filled help are the entire multitude of those saved by You: the suffering, the sick, the grieving and those burdened with sins, singing gratefully to God for You: Alleluia.
Ikos 6 The Divine light rose in Egypt and fell there among the idols, when you fled, the Most Pure One, with the Infant Jesus, fleeing from the murder of Herod. You have illuminated the minds and all the receding delights of the vain world with the light of God’s vision, tearing away from their souls the idols and destructive passions nesting there. In the same way, we exalt You with these words: Rejoice, admonishing those who doubt their faith; Rejoice, you who are proud of your humility in your mind. Rejoice, you who have tamed those embittered and scorched by anger, Rejoice, you who have reconciled those who grumble at God’s providence with the hardships of life. Rejoice, for you have invisibly punished the impudent scoffers of God and His Holiness; Rejoice, for you guide those who are lost on the path of salvation. Rejoice, shame on the superstitious and fortune-tellers; Rejoice, reproof of the corrupt and unclean. Rejoice, for you have cast down the harmful teachings; Rejoice, for you help us to know the truth. Rejoice, dispelling the darkness of blasphemy, shaming and all kinds of lies; Rejoice, you enlighten people with the light of the Holy Gospel. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 7 Although you never wanted to be separated from the Savior of the world who was born by You, You, God-blessed One, remained with Him inseparably in the city of Nazareth, raising children and feeding Him like a man and singing in Your heart like God. Alleluia.
Ikos 7 Newly showing Motherly love for Your Son, with sorrow I searched for Him, the youth of two ten years, in the city of Jerusalem on the feast of Easter, “bearing Him in my company.” Leading such is Your compassion with tenderness crying to You: Rejoice, elevating the offended and distressed; Rejoice, you who magnify those hated and rejected by all with honor. Rejoice, clothing for the poor and naked; Rejoice, food for the poor and ruined. Rejoice, charity for the homeless, the strange, widows and orphans; Rejoice, help to those without work. Rejoice, safe return to home for those who travel; Rejoice, you have brought those who are lost on their way to their home. Rejoice, renewing the minds of children who are unable to learn; Rejoice, You who do not abandon the mind and character of the simple with Your help. Rejoice, unreliable hope; Rejoice, joy for those who trust in the will of God. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 8 Strange and wondrous Your care has been with Christians on all the paths of their lives, much more rebellious and more difficult. Having in You such a merciful and unenvious Helper, all those who have been blessed by You sing loudly to God: Alleluia.
Ikos 8 You were all with Christ while serving His human race, just as the divine evangelist Luke tells about You, saying: “Your mother and [Your] brothers stand outside to see You, wanting to see you” *). We imagine that You, the All-Blessed Mother, constantly remain with all those who work for the Glory of God, praising You like this: Rejoice, you who supply rulers as servants of God, Rejoice, you who guide those in power to the triumph of good. Rejoice, adorning the saints with the rule of faith and the image of piety; Rejoice, you who provide shepherds with zeal for the salvation of their spiritual children. Rejoice, teachers of perfect understanding; Rejoice, students prospering in the sciences. Rejoice, you who motivate leaders and warriors to defend their faith and homeland; Rejoice, you who help monks and nuns in their struggle against the temptations of the world and the flesh. Rejoice, holy mirror of truth for judges; Rejoice, doctors skillful in healing the sick. Rejoice, co-worker of the farmers and good helper; Rejoice, peace and safe haven for all honest workers. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 9 Every age of the faithful benefits from Your care, All-Merciful Mother, as you always resort to You, bestowing soul-helping benefits, supplying what is needed in life and diligently interceding for us weak and sinners at the Throne of the Lord of Glory, to Him we sing: Alleluia.
Ikos 9 Vetia, which has spoken many things, cannot utter Your mother’s sorrow at the Cross of Your Son, when You saw Him suffering for all men with unspeakable torment. In the same way, as we are more experienced in all sorts of compassion and are able to give us the most severe sorrows and hardships, we cry to Ti: Rejoice, blind of sight; Rejoice, hearing of the deaf. Rejoice, health to the sick; Rejoice, knowledge of those who have fallen into the misadventures of earthly vanity. Rejoice, you who walk with the lame; Rejoice, healing of those weakened by the body. Rejoice, deliverance of those suffering from demons; Rejoice, enlightenment for those damaged by the mind. Rejoice, Thou who receivest the incurably sick into Thy omnipotent hand; Rejoice, taking away evil habits—drinking, swearing, and games. Rejoice, you who do not reject the prayers of desperate sinners; Rejoice, you who snatch them away from their destructive lack of will. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 10 To save the world, even though the Lord, who is on the Cross, gave to the whole world the Most Holy, Most Merciful Mother, when she spoke to the Most Immaculate and beloved disciple: “Behold Thy Son” and “Behold Thy Mother.” Giving thanks to the All-Good God for this, we say to Him: Alleluia.
Ikos 10 The strong wall appeared according to the commandment of the Lord, O Most Blessed One, giving to all prosperity, peace, consolation, joy, as you yourself were the first to receive all this from the Risen Christ the Savior, having heard from Him the welcoming voice: “Rejoice.” For this reason, we please Thee this way: Rejoice, thou who tames all hatred and malice in us; Rejoice, instilling peace in the heart of the Holy Spirit. Rejoice, destroyer of envy, slander, jealousy and rancor; Rejoice, thou who hast grieved us with brotherly love. Rejoice, protector from famine, cold, cowardice, flood, fire, and sword; Rejoice, you who feed us with our daily bread. Rejoice, you who stop the deadly plague; Rejoice, the wrath of God, righteously driven upon us, quenching. Rejoice, haste of our righteous deeds; Rejoice, on all the paths of our life there is industry. Rejoice, you who comfort parents with the good behavior of their children; Rejoice, thou who rewardest the servants of God with a quiet and silent life. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men. Kontakion 11 Our humble singing from the fullness of love and zeal is offered to You, do not despise, Bride of God, and do not turn away from us sinners and unworthy, but help us to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, so that we may be able to worthily and righteously sing to God: Alleluia.
Ikos 11 You appeared as a guiding light to the apostle, Mother of God, after the ascension of Your Son into heaven. You remain such even to this day for all who want to be saved and come into the understanding of truth. Do not, O All-Blessed One, deprive us of Your holy guidance in the sea of everyday worries, who are overwhelmed, even though from the heart they bring You the following blessings: Rejoice, thou who burnest up unclean thoughts; Rejoice, sobering one from sinful feelings. Rejoice, you who drive away temptations and seductions from us; Rejoice, you who strive towards repentance and correction. Rejoice, you who wash away the abyss of our iniquities with tears of contrition; Rejoice, you who help us to remain spiritually awake. Rejoice, you who raise your mind and heart to heavenly things; Rejoice, you who compel you to despise all earthly things. Rejoice, you who lead to sobriety and prayer; Rejoice, you who prepare the bliss of the spirit. Rejoice, clear reinforcement for the ascetics of piety; Rejoice, wondrous salvation for all the faithful. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 12 Ask us for Divine grace from Thy Son and God, extend a helping hand, so that we may not perish in the sins and cruel circumstances that come upon us from enemies visible and invisible. Pacify our hearts, filled with malice and enmity, so that, comforted by You, we joyfully call to God: Alleluia. Ikos 12 As we honestly sing Your Dormition, we glorify Your Holy Protection, spread over the whole world, especially the Christian race, which glorifies Thee: Rejoice, who prepares us for the departure from this life by repentance; Rejoice, you who cleanse you from sins through illness. Rejoice, for you protect us from vain death; Rejoice, for you are worthy of the last parting words. Rejoice, thou who sendest the quick release of the soul from the body in its death throes. Rejoice, granter of a peaceful death; Rejoice, deliverer of bitter ordeals. Rejoice, you who do not deprive of Christian burial; Rejoice, you who intercede for us will come to the Lord. Rejoice, thou who art with us in life and in death; Rejoice, “Our Joy,” who opens the doors of heaven to us. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 13 Oh, Lady of the world, accept this little gratitude of ours, offered to You with all our hearts, and do not allow us to grow cold in this grateful feeling, but instruct us to always remember Your countless mercies and cry out to God about You with tears of tenderness: Alleluia, Alleluia , alleluia.
(This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1).
Prayer O, Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, Most Merciful Mother of all Christians, especially those who mourn, are persecuted, and are possessed by various ailments! I, as I am poor and wretched in soul and body, appearing before Your holy image, with tears and touchingly ask for Your gracious alms. There is nothing good and good in me - I am completely surrounded by infirmities, poverty and squalor - my feet do not have shoes, so that I can hasten to holy and godly deeds; My hands are dirty from the many iniquities I have committed; My eyes are downcast from uncleanness of conscience. They will not be able to look at the splendor of Your beauty, revealed to us in Your miraculous image, “The Covering One.” My whole face is darkened and dotted with the stamp of my countless vices and sins. I have neither saving faith, nor comforting hope, nor blissful love; I am like a putrefactive vessel, filled with all kinds of filth: pride, selfishness, arrogance, vanity, anger, irritability, malice, resentment, ill will, envy, jealousy, condemnation, murmuring, slander, idle talk, deceit, flattery, deception, hypocrisy, despondency, impatience, cowardice, incontinence of mental and physical feelings, addiction, carnality, all voluptuousness and countless other passions. And such is my spiritual misery, the same is physical - illnesses and misfortunes have held me and my whole life, like a reed shaken by the wind, full of inconstancy, fear and all kinds of danger. According to the verb of the holy apostle: troubles come from the spirits of wickedness in high places; troubles from people who hate, offend and are at enmity with me; troubles from animals, livestock and the creeping things of the earth; troubles from the elements of the world - lightning, fire, water, harmful air, cold, famine; troubles from the many infirmities and diseases of my body; troubles on the way and at home; troubles in the days and in the night... Who will support me, who will save me, who will deliver me from my enemies, who will guide me to virtue, who will heal my illnesses, who will console, calm, enlighten, instruct, save and have mercy if not You, Most Holy Mother, Intercessor and my All-Good Patroness! You gather my mind, scattered throughout the world, cleanse my thoughts from all filth; Refresh feelings poisoned by all kinds of evil; Strengthen my will, flabby for all good things, and deliver me from destructive lack of will; Fill your heart with passions of freedom and holy love for God and your neighbors; Rearrange my entire inner temple and make it a comfortable dwelling for the Holy Spirit. Do not leave me, Most Merciful Lady, in my many-sorrowful physical life: consume illness; visible and invisible enemies are raging; Destroy evil circumstances; push away the fear that comes from the spirits of evil and people who want to destroy me; Grant me all I need and need, good spirits, let's go. May I, renewed, purified, and comforted by You, my Most Holy Queen, glorify the Holy Trinity - the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and Your wondrous care for me, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Troparion, tone 4 To the Mother of God, a priest in troubles, and to Her holy icon, we cry out: Oh, Lady of the world, accept our unceasing and zealous thanksgiving, for in the days of difficult circumstances You, All-Blessed Mother, have wondrously preserved Your faithful servants from evil slander. You cover spirits and people invisibly.
There is also a Repentant Akathist and an Akathist to all icons of the Most Holy Theotokos
The word “akathist” itself did not immediately begin to designate a specific genre. It was needed later. It was necessary to somehow designate a corpus of imitative works in the form of a hymn to various saints. All such texts tried to preserve the original structure.
There are different akathists to the Most Holy Theotokos, there is even an akathist to the icon - and more than one. Of course, the Lord Jesus Christ also has his own hymn.
From a literary and theological point of view, these are works of varying quality and value. Many people tried to write hymns, but not all of these beginners had sufficient talent for this. This explains why almost akathists are not given obligatory reading days.
However, the following akathists are popular:
- repentant akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos;
- Akathist to all icons of the Most Holy Theotokos.
Description and plot
The name of the icon of the Mother of God reflects the plot of the image. The Virgin Mary, with her scarf, seems to shield the Savior from all adversity and troubles. The Divine Infant holds in his hands a bunch of grapes, which symbolizes Holy Communion, which is considered for Christians to be protection from everything bad and evil.
There is a version according to which the prototype for painting the icon of the Virgin Mary was the painting “Madonna with Grapes”, which was painted by Pierre Mignard.
The image of the Mother of God with the Child Jesus reminds Christians of the importance of constant Communion, in which the salvation of every Orthodox believer.
The Virgin Mary is depicted in the icon as very feminine and tender. Looking at her posture and soft gestures, believers feel heavenly peace and protection from all the troubles and evil of this world. Despite its great emotional content, the icon is not widespread among Orthodox Christians, but is highly revered among local residents.
The Akathist of the Most Holy Theotokos is read on Akathist Saturday
The church charter regulates when this akathist is read. This happens on Saturday morning of the fifth week of Great Lent, in the Lenten Triodion. The same already mentioned feast of the Praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a sign demonstrating the exceptional position of this text.
Vologda Church of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called on Akathist Saturday - the day when the Akathist of the Blessed Virgin Mary is read
Why exactly this day? Here is what Priest Mikhail Asmus says about this:
“The miracle itself happened on this day - Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent.
But since the Church also lives according to the Easter calendar, the holiday on the day associated with Easter will be transferable.”
Mikhail Asmus
priest
Also, Priest Mikhail Asmus explains why such love for this holiday in Orthodoxy is connected:
“Everyone loves akathists to the Mother of God. Especially the Russians, who have many imitations.
In the church consciousness, the theme of the miraculous intervention of the Mother of God in the military affairs of the state was fixed on this day.
And what in history and in worship was attributed to Constantinople, every Orthodox city tries to attribute to itself.
Mikhail Asmus
priest
Of course, you can read this akathist at home, but public worship expresses the conciliarity of the Church. And such a public reading of the Great Akathist reminds us of Orthodox statehood, because such miracles were possible only thanks to Orthodoxy as the state religion.
The Great Akathist consists of Kontakia interspersed with Ikos.
The ikos, in contrast to the kontakion, contains the text of joyful glorification (“Rejoice, by which joy will shine: Rejoice, by which the oath will disappear...”, etc.) and a special, repeated at the end of each ikos, the same ending-refrain (“Rejoice, unbridled Bride ").
Kontakion and ikos form, as it were, one block of the akathist. There are 12 such blocks in total. All akathists now have this structure.”
Akathist of the Blessed Virgin Mary in modern translation
In order to read the akathist more thoughtfully, it is useful to imagine what it is about. For example, 1st kontakion “To the Mother of God, taken up by the governor...” translated into modern Russian looks like this:
“To the Military Leader who defends us, for deliverance from terrible troubles, we institute for You celebrations of victory, grateful to You, we, Your servants, Mother of God! But You, as having irresistible power, free us from all dangers, so we cry to You: “Rejoice, Bride, who has not known marriage!”
We will also consider the translation of monk 1. Original text:
“A representative angel from heaven was sent quickly saying to the Mother of God: Rejoice, and with an incorporeal voice you were incarnated in vain, Lord, terrified and standing, calling to Her like this: Rejoice, Her joy will shine forth; Rejoice, Her oath will disappear.
Rejoice, proclamation to fallen Adam; Rejoice, deliverance of the tears of Eve.
Rejoice, height beyond the reach of human thoughts; Rejoice, depths beyond comprehension and angelic eyes.
Rejoice, for you are the King's seat; Rejoice, for you bear Him who bears all.
Rejoice, Star that reveals the Sun; Rejoice, womb of the Divine Incarnation.
Rejoice, even the creation is being renewed; Rejoice, we worship the Creator.
Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.”
And here's what it looks like in translation:
“The leading angel was sent from heaven to say to the Mother of God: “Rejoice!” And, contemplating You, Lord, with this disembodied exclamation incarnate, he was amazed, and stood, crying out to Her: Rejoice, for through You joy will shine; Rejoice, for through You the curse will disappear.
Rejoice, fallen Adam was called to salvation; Rejoice, deliverance from Eve's tears.
Rejoice, height unattainable for human thoughts; Rejoice, depth, impenetrable even to angelic eyes.
Rejoice, for You are the seat of the King; Rejoice, for Thou bearest the Bearer of all.
Rejoice, star representing the Sun; Rejoice, womb of the Divine Incarnation.
Rejoice, for through You creation is renewed; Rejoice, for in You the Creator becomes a Child.
Rejoice, Bride, who has never known marriage.”
It is also useful to listen to how the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos sounds:
Icon of the Mother of God “Covering”
The “Covering” Icon of the Mother of God was the cell image of Schema nun Tamar (Tamara Alexandrovna Mardzhanova, 1868 - 1936), the founder of the Seraphim-Znamensky monastery on the southern outskirts of Moscow, in the village of Bityagovo, Domodedovo district.
History of the image: Nothing is known about the history of the creation and acquisition of the image. The first information about the Covering Icon of the Mother of God appears from the time of the founding of the Seraphim-Znamensky monastery.
Based on the name of the area in which the monastery is located, the Covering Icon of the Mother of God is also called Domodedovo. Mother Tamar considered this icon to be the guardian of the monastery and its nuns. “You, All-Blessed Mother, wonderfully preserve Your faithful servants and invisibly protect You from the slander of evil spirits and people...”
The miraculous image, the Covering Icon of the Mother of God, was a secret (cell) Georgian image of the schema-abbess Tamarya. Before him, she prayed in holy solitude for the whole world, for Russia, foreseeing the coming troubles that would befall the dear Fatherland.
The very foundation of the Seraphim-Znamensky monastery was not simple, but at the direction of the Queen of Heaven. That is why everyone entering under the arches of the monastery felt the extraordinary grace of this place. A monastery was created 30 kilometers from Moscow, widely known in the 20th century for the height of the monastic life of its founders, later Russian new martyrs and confessors.
The foundation of the monastery took place on August 9, 1910; on September 23, 1912, Metropolitan Vladimir (Epiphany), later a holy martyr, consecrated the newly created monastery. The field of spiritual nourishment for the monastery was prepared for Bishop Arseny (Zhadanovsky), a fifth-generation clergyman, one of the host of new martyrs of recent times, a man of high spirituality, wisdom and purity.
From the day of its foundation until its closure in 1924, the Seraphim-Znamensky monastery was the place of his solitary exploits. In 1916 he became the confessor of the monastery. Possessing great spiritual experience and an excellent literary gift, he left to his descendants memoirs about the great ascetics of the 20th century.
Bishop Arseny wrote the book “Memoirs”, a number of articles on the history of the Russian Church and liturgical texts, including a service with an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos in honor of Her “Covering” icon. The founder of the monastery is considered to be schema-abbess Tamar, who received the blessing for its construction from the great elders of that time: Gabriel of Sedmiezersk, Anatoly of Optina and Alexy Zosimovsky.
It is interesting that everything in the monastery is symbolic. The central temple of the monastery, unusually beautiful, is crowned with 24 kokoshniks - the number of apocalyptic elders, who symbolize the victory of good over evil and the unceasing prayer offered to the Lord around the clock - 24 hours.
Temple of Seraphim-Znamensky Skete
The fence of the monastery, which is a square, each side of which is 33 fathoms long, according to the number of years of the Savior’s earthly life. According to the charter, there should also be 33 sisters in the monastery.
Behind the fence, 12 small houses are built into the wall - cells, in accordance with the number of Apostles, each house bears the name of one of the Apostles. Everything in the monastery is in its place and has its own meaning.
The Venerable Martyr Elizaveta Fedorovna Romanova, with whom Schema-Abbess Tamar was friendly, took an active part in the founding of the monastery. And Mother Tamar received her first blessing for her monastic feat from the holy righteous John of Kronstadt.
Mother greatly revered St. Seraphim of Sarov and always carried an icon of the saint with her. The temple of the monastery was consecrated in honor of Saint Seraphim of Sarov and the icon “The Sign”, and therefore received the name Seraphim-Znamensky.
The monastery opened in 1912, and already in 1924 it was ruined. Monastic life in the monastery was restored in 2001. After the monastery was closed, the Covering Icon of the Mother of God was in the Novospassky Monastery for men, and after the restoration of the monastery it returned to the monastery, where it remains to this day.
Icon of the Mother of God “Covering” in the Seraphim-Znamensky Skete
Iconography: On the icon of the Mother of God “Covering”, the Most Holy Theotokos seems to cover the Infant God with her head cloth from all adversities (hence the name of the icon - Covering), and He holds in his hands a bunch of grapes - the Emblem of Holy Communion, which in itself protects from all troubles .
There is an assumption that the image was based on Pierre Mignard’s painting “Madonna of the Grapes.” The Covering Icon of the Mother of God reminds us of the need for frequent communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, in which our salvation lies.
The gentle maternal face of the Most Holy Theotokos on the “Covering” icon of the Mother of God, Her pose and gestures, evoke a feeling of peace and security. The “Covering” Icon of the Mother of God, marvelous in its emotional fullness, is not very common and widely known, but is very revered by local residents.
Icon of the Covering Mother of God, modern list
Prayer tradition: Before the icon of the “Covering” Mother of God, people pray in troubles and misfortunes, ask for consolation in sorrows, for healing of physical and mental illnesses.
Vladyka Arseniy (Zhadanovsky), the monastery’s confessor, composed a service with an akathist to the “Covering” Icon of the Mother of God.
The miraculous icon of the Mother of God “The Covering One” sometimes travels through the churches of Russia so that its admirers can venerate the holy image. So in 2022, she was brought to the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Crimea at the request of parishioners.
The celebration of March 6/19 is dedicated to the birthday of the Hieromartyr Arseny.
Prayer to the Covering Icon of the Mother of God
O Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, Compassionate Mother of all Christians, especially those who mourn, are persecuted, and are possessed by various ailments! I, as I am poor and wretched in soul and body, appearing before Your holy image, with tears and touchingly ask for Your gracious alms. There is nothing good and good in me, - I am completely surrounded by infirmities, poverty and squalor, - my feet do not have shoes, so that I can hasten to holy and godly deeds; My hands are dirty from the many iniquities I have committed; my eyes are downcast from a bad conscience. They will not be able to look at the splendor of Your beauty, revealed to us in Your miraculous image, “The Covering One.” My whole face is darkened and dotted with the stamp of my countless vices and sins. I have neither saving faith, nor comforting hope, nor blissful love; I am like a putrefactive vessel, filled with all kinds of filth: pride, selfishness, arrogance, vanity, anger, irritability, malice, resentment, ill will, envy, jealousy, condemnation, murmuring, slander, idle talk, deceit, flattery, deception, hypocrisy, despondency, impatience, cowardice, incontinence of mental and physical feelings, addiction, carnality, all voluptuousness and other numerous passions. And such is my spiritual misery, the same is physical - illnesses and misfortunes have held me and my whole life, like a reed shaken by the wind, full of inconstancy, fear and all kinds of danger. According to the verb of the holy apostle: troubles are the spirits of wickedness in high places; troubles from people who hate, offend and are at enmity with me; troubles from animals, livestock and the creeping things of the earth; troubles from the elements of the world - lightning, fire, water, harmful air, cold, famine; troubles from the many infirmities and diseases of my body; troubles on the way and at home; troubles day and night. Who will support me, who will save me, who will deliver me from my enemies, who will guide me to virtue, who will heal my illnesses, who will console, repose, enlighten, instruct, save and have mercy if not You, Most Holy Mother, my All-Good Intercessor and Patroness! You gather my mind, scattered throughout the world, and cleanse my thoughts from all filth; feelings, poisoned by all kinds of evil, refresh; Strengthen my flabby will for all good things and deliver me from destructive lack of will; Fill your heart with passions of freedom and holy love for God and your neighbors; Rearrange my entire inner temple and make it a comfortable dwelling for the Holy Spirit. Do not leave me, Most Merciful Lady, in my many-sorrowful physical life: consume illness; visible and invisible enemies are raging; Destroy evil circumstances; push away the fear that comes from the spirits of evil and people who want to destroy me; Grant me everything I need and need, send me good spirits. May I, renewed, purified, and comforted by You, my Most Holy Queen, glorify the Holy Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and Your wondrous care for me, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos in honor of Her “COVERING” Icon
Kontakion 1 To the Exalted Voivode, Queen of Heaven and Earth, who gave us the wonderful icon “The Covering One,” we offer thanksgiving singing. You, as the Compassionate Mother, do not reject our prayer, but be pleased to accept it, worthy to cry out to You like this: Rejoice, Lady of the world, covering us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Ikos 1 Saint Anna heard the angelic voice saying: You have conceived and given birth to a Daughter, the Blessed Mary, with Her all the tribes of the earth will be blessed and salvation will come to the whole world.
Kontakion 2 Seeing Your holy parents Joachim and Anna, as You are the Most Pure, the Blessed Fruit, they gave thanks to God and before the doors of the temple made a vow to dedicate You to the Lord, singing to Him: Alleluia.
Ikos 2 You yourself have acquired perfect intelligence, O Mother of God, having been brought up in the Holy of Holies, so you do not cease to make wise and enlighten with the light of God’s understanding and all Christians cry out to You like this: Rejoice, you who lead to the knowledge of God; Rejoice, you who turn the seduced to the light of truth. Rejoice, you who instill the fear of God in hearts, Rejoice, you who teach reverence for the holy thing. Rejoice, inspiring zeal for salvation; Rejoice, spiritual insensibility is overwhelming in us. Rejoice, thou who inspirest to honor the temples of God; Rejoice, you find inspiring joy in them. Rejoice, you who arouse the thirst for Holy Communion; Rejoice, igniting faith and love for God. Rejoice, champion of purity and chastity; Rejoice, companion of good Christian life.
Having received this good news with humility, as a servant of the Lord, you cried out to God: Alleluia
Rejoice, you who save us from spiritual anguish and despondency; Rejoice, hastening help to the helpless. Rejoice, Mother of all the grieving and oppressed; Rejoice, zealous Intercessor of the whole Christian world.
With them, in spiritual joy, we also say to You, as a common Mother: Rejoice, raising babies; Rejoice, O Youths of Meaning, Giver. Rejoice, fair marriages have been established; Rejoice, enmity, quarrels between half-blooded people, destruction. Rejoice, blessing to pious families; Rejoice, praise and exaltation of virginity. Rejoice, Lady of the world, who protects us from the slander of evil spirits and men.
Kontakion 5 You appear as a God-bearing star, O Queen of Heaven, to all who come running under Your omnipotent protection and continually cry out to God with tenderness of heart: Alleluia.
Ikos 5 Seeing the righteous Simeon Thea, who came with the baby Jesus in the temple to introduce herself to the Lord, saying: “A weapon will pierce your very soul,” implying Your Mother’s suffering for Your Divine Son and for all those persecuted for His Holy Name. Rejoice, you who graciously visit those who sit in chains; Rejoice, you who delight patient sufferers with the anticipation of bliss. Rejoice, softening the hearts of evil people who are at enmity against us; Rejoice, thou who destroyest wicked advice and deceit. Rejoice, you who protect us from robbers along the way; Rejoice, thou who leadest thieves and secret murderers away from our homes.
You, having illuminated with the light of the vision of God the minds and all the receding delights of the vain world, tearing away from their souls the idols, the destructive passions nesting there, We also extol You with these words: Rejoice, admonishment of those who doubt faith; Rejoice, you who are proud of your humility in your mind. Rejoice, you who have tamed those who are embittered and burned by anger; Rejoice, you who have reconciled those who grumble at God’s providence with the hardships of life. Rejoice, for you have invisibly punished the impudent scoffers of God and His Holiness; Rejoice, for you have guided those who are lost on the path of salvation. Rejoice, shame on the superstitious and fortune-tellers; Rejoice, reproof of the corrupt and unclean. Rejoice, for you have overthrown the harmful teachings; Rejoice, for you helped to know the truth. Rejoice, you have dispelled the darkness of blasphemy, shaming and all kinds of lies; Rejoice, having enlightened people with the light of the Holy Gospel.
Alleluia.
Ikos 7 Newly showing motherly love for Your Son, with sorrow I searched for Him, a youth of two ten years old, in the city of Jerusalem on the feast of Easter, “bearing Him in my company.” Leading such is Your compassion with tenderness crying to You: Rejoice, elevating the offended and distressed; rejoice; exalting those hated and rejected by all with honor.
Ikos 8 You were all with Christ while serving His human race, just as the divine Evangelist Luke tells about You, saying: “Your mother and brothers stand outside to see You, wanting to see You” (Luke 8:20). We imagine that You, the All-Blessed Mother, constantly abided with all those who labor for the Glory of God, praising You like this: Rejoice, rulers, as the servants of God, supplying, Rejoice, guiding those in power to the triumph of good. Rejoice, adorning the Saints with the rule of faith and the image of piety; Rejoice, thou who providest shepherds with zeal for the salvation of their spiritual children. Rejoice, teachers of perfect understanding; Rejoice, thou that students prosper in the sciences. Rejoice, you who motivate leaders and warriors to defend their faith and homeland; Rejoice, you who help monks and nuns in their struggle against the temptations of the world and the flesh. Rejoice, holy mirror of truth for judges; Rejoice, skillful physicians in healing the sick.
Ikos 9 Vetia, which has spoken many things, cannot express Your motherly sorrow at the Cross of Your Son, when You saw Him suffering for all men with unspeakable torment. In the same way, as we are more experienced in all sorts of compassion and are able to give us the most severe sorrows and hardships, we cry to Ti: Rejoice, blind of sight; Rejoice, hearing of the deaf. Rejoice, you who walk with the lame; Rejoice, healing of those who are weak in the body. Rejoice, health to the sick; Rejoice, knowledge of those who have fallen into the misadventures of earthly vanity. Rejoice, deliverance of those suffering from demons; Rejoice, enlightenment for those damaged by the mind. Rejoice, Thou who receivest the incurably sick into Thy omnipotent hand; Rejoice, taking away from evil habits - drinking, abuse, and games.
Rejoice, destroyer of envy, slander, jealousy and rancor; Rejoice, you who spare us with brotherly love.
Kontakion 11
Do not despise our humble singing from the fullness of love and zeal offered to You, Bride of God, and do not turn away from us sinners and unworthy, but help us to cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, so that we may be able to worthily and righteously sing to God: Alleluia.
Ikos 11 You appeared as a guiding light to the apostle, Mother of God, after the ascension of Your Son into heaven. You remain such even to this day for all who want to be saved and come to the understanding of truth. Do not, O All-Blessed One, deprive us of Your holy guidance in the sea of everyday worries, who are overwhelmed, even though from the heart they bring You the following blessings: Rejoice, thou who burnest up unclean thoughts; Rejoice, soberer from sinful feelings. Rejoice, you who drive away temptations and seductions from us; Rejoice, you who strive towards repentance and correction. Rejoice, you who wash away the abyss of our iniquities with tears of contrition; Rejoice, you who help us to remain spiritually awake. Rejoice, you who raise your mind and heart to heavenly things; Rejoice, you who force you to despise everything earthly.
Ikos 12 As we honestly sing Your Dormition, we glorify Your Holy Protection, spread over the whole world, especially the Christian race, which glorifies Thee: Rejoice, who prepares us for the departure from this life by repentance; Rejoice, you who cleanse us from sins through illness. Rejoice, for you have protected us from vain death; Rejoice, for you were worthy of the last parting words.
Kontakion 13 Oh, Lady of the world, accept this little gratitude of ours, offered to You with all our hearts, and do not allow us to grow cold in this grateful feeling, but make us wise to always remember Your dishonest mercies and cry out to God about You with tears of tenderness: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. (This Kontakion is read three times, and Ikos 1 and Kontakion 1 are read).
PRAYER Oh, Most Holy Virgin Theotokos, Most Merciful Mother of all Christians, especially those who mourn, are persecuted, and are possessed by various ailments! May I, renewed, purified, and comforted by You, my Most Holy Queen, glorify the Holy Trinity - the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and Your wondrous care for me now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayers
Oh, Most Holy Lady Lady Theotokos, you are the highest Angel and Archangel of all, and the most honorable of all creatures, you are the helper of the offended, the hopeless hope, the poor intercessor, the sad consolation, the hungry nurse, the naked robe, the healing of the sick, the salvation of sinners, the help and intercession of all Christians. O All-Merciful Lady, Virgin Mother of God and Lady, by Thy mercy save and have mercy on the most holy Orthodox patriarchs, the most reverend metropolitans, archbishops and bishops and the entire priestly and monastic rank,
and protect all Orthodox Christians with Your honorable robe; and pray, Lady, from You, without seed, Christ our God, incarnate, may gird us with His power from above, against our invisible and visible enemies.
Oh, All-Merciful Lady Lady Theotokos! Raise us from the depths of sin and deliver us from famine, destruction, from cowardice and flood, from fire and sword, from the presence of foreigners and internecine warfare, and from vain death, and from the attack of the enemy,
and from corrupting winds, and from deadly plagues, and from all evil. Grant, O Lady, peace and health to Thy servant, all Orthodox Christians, and enlighten their minds and the eyes of their hearts, leading to salvation; and have made us worthy, Thy sinful servants, of the Kingdom of Thy Son, Christ our God;
for His power is blessed and glorified, with His Originless Father, and with His Most Holy, and Good, and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Oh, Most Holy Virgin Mother of the Lord, Queen of Heaven and earth! Hear the much-painful sighing of our soul, look down from Thy holy height upon us, who with faith and love worship Thy most pure image. We are immersed in sins and overwhelmed by sorrows, looking at Your image, as if You were alive and living with us, we offer our humble prayers. The imams have no other help, no other intercession, no consolation except You, O Mother of all who mourn and are burdened.
Help us the weak, satisfy our sorrow, guide us, the erring, on the right path, heal and save the hopeless, grant us the rest of our lives to spend in peace and silence, grant us a Christian death, and at the Last Judgment of Your Son the merciful Intercessor will appear to us, and always We sing, magnify and glorify Thee, as the good Intercessor of the Christian race, with all those who have pleased God. Prayer to our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, common Accept, O all-powerful, most pure Lady, Lady Theotokos, these honorable gifts, the only one applied to You, from us, Thy unworthy servants, chosen from all generations, manifested above all creatures of heaven and earth. Because for Your sake the Lord of hosts was with us, and through You we knew the Son of God, and were made worthy of His holy body and His most pure blood. Moreover, you are blessed in the birth of generations, blessed by God, the brightest of the cherubim and the most honest of the seraphim. And now, all-sung Most Holy Theotokos, do not cease praying for us, Your unworthy servants, that we may be delivered from every evil advice and from every situation, and that we may be preserved unharmed from every poisonous pretext of the devil. But even to the end, through Your prayers, keep us uncondemned: for through Your intercession and help we are saved, glory, praise, thanksgiving and worship for all in the Trinity we send to the one God and the Creator of all, now and ever and unto the ages of ages.
