Icon of the Sign of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The icon of the Most Holy Theotokos called “The Sign” is especially revered among Orthodox Christians in Russia. After the miraculous deliverance of Novgorod, copies of the original appeared throughout Rus', and many miracles also occurred from them.
It depicts the Queen of Heaven, who sits on a throne and raises her hands to the sky in a prayer gesture. Against the background of a round shield located on the chest of the Virgin Mary, there is the Infant Emmanuel.
History of origin and significance in Orthodoxy
The first images of the Mother of God in Rus' appeared in the 11th-12th centuries, and received their name from the Novgorod icon, which showed a miracle during the siege of the city in 1170. The appanage princes united their troops and, under the leadership of the Suzdal prince, treacherously attacked Novgorod. The townspeople prayed to the Almighty day and night, asking for intercession. After three days, the local archbishop named Elijah heard a wondrous voice from heaven, which commanded him to take the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, which was in the Church of the Transfiguration, and take it to the city wall.
At the moment when the image was transferred in procession to the indicated place, the archers of the attackers fired arrows along the procession. One of the arrows hit the face of the Queen of Heaven, and tears flowed from her eyes, and the icon itself turned to face the besieged city. After seeing the Divine sign, the attackers were attacked by inexplicable horror, and they began to kill each other. The townspeople who saw this rushed to attack and destroyed the opponents.
In memory of this miracle and the intercession of the Mother of God, Elijah established a holiday in honor of the icon, which is still celebrated annually by the Orthodox Church today.
