The history of the appearance of the akathist

The Icon of the Mother of God “Addition of Mind” also has other names – “Key of Reason” and “Giver of Reason”. Its celebration takes place on August 28 according to the new style. The icon depicts the Mother of God and the Child Christ, with wreaths on their heads, and they themselves are wrapped in an embroidered phelonion (the upper liturgical vestment of a priest). Angels fly on both sides with lit candles. The baby holds an orb in his left hand, and under the feet of the Mother of God and above her are cherubs.

As archaeologist Titov established in the 20th century, the prototype of the icon was a statue of the Virgin Mary from the Italian city of Loreto, or more precisely, an engraving with her image. Stories about the statue were known in Russia back in the 16th century.

The history of painting the icon is unusual. In the 17th century, during the schism of the Orthodox Church in Russia, one monk could not understand the meaning of the reforms carried out by Nikon. The monk began to study the faith and read all available books. He was so afraid of accidentally sinning or praying incorrectly that his mind became clouded.

There are two options to continue:

The monk got scared and began to pray to the Mother of God for healing. She ordered her image to be drawn, in which she appeared to the monk, after which he recovered.
At times, the monk’s reason returned and he began to pray. During the clearing, the Mother of God appeared to him and showed him an icon, which quickly disappeared. As soon as the monk finished painting, he was completely healed.

The icon quickly became miraculous; it healed the mentally ill who came to it. Today the original is kept in Rybinsk, in the Transfiguration Cathedral. Another miraculous icon, “Increasing the Mind,” is located in the city of Tutaevo (Yaroslavl region) in the Intercession Church. In Moscow, the image can be seen in the church in honor of Our Lady of Tikhvin in Alekseevsky.

A certain painter, in the darkening of his mind, received no benefit from earthly doctors, was overcome by a great storm of sorrow. Then the Most Pure Mother of the Lord appeared to the sick man and commanded her to write an icon, which she would consecrate her house in the city of Loreto. Having completed this, the artist was healed and from that day called the newly painted icon “Addition of Mind,” singing before it a song of praise to God: Alleluia.

Meaning in Orthodoxy

Prayer

In the Most Pure Mother of God, the House that the Wisdom of God created, the Giver of spiritual gifts, raising our minds from the world to the worldly and leading everyone to the knowledge of reason! Receive prayerful singing from us, Thy unworthy servants, who bow with faith and tenderness before Thy most pure image. Pray to Thy Son and our God to grant wisdom and strength to our rulers, to judges truth and impartiality, to shepherds spiritual wisdom, zeal and vigilance for souls, to mentors humility, to children obedience, to all of us the spirit of reason and piety, the spirit of humility and meekness, the spirit purity and truth. And now, our All-Singing Mother, give us an increase in intelligence, pacify, unite those who exist in enmity and division and lay down for them an insoluble bond of love, convert all those who have gone astray from foolishness to the light of the truth of Christ, instruct the fear of God, abstinence and hard work, the word of wisdom and soul-helping knowledge Grant to those who ask, overshadow us with eternal joy, the most honorable of the Cherubim and the most glorious of the Seraphim.
