Listen to the akathist:

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered in Russia. This is because she has been the Intercessor and Patroness of the Russian land for many centuries. The akathist tells about the miraculous appearance of the image and cases of protection and patronage that the Mother of God provided to the soldiers of Russia.

The life of every person consists not only of joyful events. Sorrows often occur, which are sent to strengthen one’s faith. An Orthodox person in this case resorts to prayer, asking for the help and intercession of the Mother of God.

What is an akathist

A solemn hymn or song of praise written in honor of the Mother of God, Jesus Christ or a saint is called an akathist. Translated from ancient Greek, this word means “non-seated singing,” which means that the akathist is listened to or read only while standing. The only exceptions are seriously ill people.

The Akathist consists of ikos and kontakia. The latter is a short song that briefly describes an action or story performed by a saint. Ikos is a song of praise that tells in more detail about the event sung in the previous kontakion.

What does the akathist read at the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God consist of?

The hymn of praise includes ikos and kontakia. There are 25 songs in total, according to the number of letters in the Greek alphabet. The prayer includes 13 songs of praise and 12 lengthy ones, “ikos”. The Akathist is read in its entirety; excerpts cannot be read separately.

Ikos end with the word “Rejoice!”, and kontakia end with the exclamation “Hallelujah!”, that is, “Praise God.” Unlike the kontakion, the purpose of the akathist is to glorify and praise. For this reason, there is a rule: the 13th kontakion is read 3 times with an appeal to the Kazan Mother of God, then 1 ikos and 1 kontakion are read.

How to read the akathist correctly

The akathist is read while standing, turning to the icon of the “Kazan Mother of God.” If you don’t have such an image, you can simply turn towards the east. Pre-initial prayers are read first. They can be found in any prayer book. Thus, they ask the Lord for help for a good deed, and blessings for a feat. At the end of reading the akathist, prayers of gratitude are offered. You need to light a candle, stand in front of the icon and begin prayer. Be sure to cross yourself while reading the akathist.

It is better to read the Akathist to the Kazan Mother of God in the morning or in the evening before going to bed. It is not read before Easter during Lent. Before reading the akathist, you can take a blessing from the priest.

We must sincerely ask the Mother of God for help and thank her for her help. The main thing is to deeply believe that the Virgin Mary will hear the prayer addressed to Her and will definitely help solve pressing problems.

History and meaning of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God

The image of the Mother of God appeared quite remarkably. It all started when an Orthodox church burned down in Kazan in the 16th century. This event caused a lot of gossip among the people, some even began to doubt the existence of God, since He allowed this to happen.

Not only the church burned down, many families were left homeless. In one of them lived a little girl, Matrona, to whom the Mother of God appeared in a dream and indicated the place underground where the image needed to be retrieved. In the morning the girl told her parents about her dream. However, they did not believe her. When the dream was repeated twice more, the parents believed that the Virgin Mary herself spoke to their child.

Matrona indicated the place where the image was located. Having started digging, the parents actually discovered the icon. She was wrapped in a piece of cloth, and a wonderful radiance emanated from her. It is believed that it was hidden there by Christians who were unable to take the icon with them. The image was transferred to the Annunciation Cathedral, where she performed many miracles. During the religious procession with the icon, two blind men received their sight.

When Ivan the Terrible learned about the miraculous story of the acquisition of the image, he ordered the construction of the Kazan Cathedral, the most famous Moscow temple. The icon was moved here. A women's monastery was founded, in which later the grown-up Matrona and her mother took monastic vows.

The miraculous icon helped Russia more than once, helping to defeat enemies and protecting from enemies. Many lists were written from the face, which are still revered to this day. The original, acquired in the 16th century, has not survived. The Kazan monastery was robbed and the image disappeared without a trace. Later, the police found the thieves, who testified that they sold the robe decorated with jewelry, and chopped up and burned the image.

The lists have the same miraculous properties as the original. During the siege of Leningrad, one of them was taken around the city, and he survived despite terrible hardships.

The icon depicts the half-length face of the Mother of God and the Child on the left hand of the mother. Jesus Christ blesses by raising his right hand.

Yours, let us be worthy of the Heavenly Kingdom and there, with all the saints, let us glorify the Most Honorable and Magnificent Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Second prayer

Oh, Most Holy Lady Theotokos, Queen of Heaven and earth, the highest angel and archangel and the most honest, pure Virgin Mary of all creation, good Helper to the world, and affirmation for all people, and deliverance for all needs! Look now, O All-Merciful Lady, upon Thy servants, praying to Thee with a tender soul and a contrite heart, falling with tears to Thee and worshiping Thy most pure and wholesome image, and asking for Thy help and intercession. Oh, All-Merciful and Most Merciful Pure Virgin Mary! Look, O Lady, at Thy people: for we are sinners and imams of no other help than to You and from You, Christ our God born. You are our intercessor and representative. You are protection for the offended, joy for the sorrowing, refuge for the orphans, keeper for widows, glory for virgins, joy for those who cry, visitation for the sick, healing for the weak, salvation for sinners. For this reason, O Mother of God, we resort to You, and looking at Your Most Pure Image with the Eternal Child held in Your hand, our Lord Jesus Christ, we bring tender singing to You and cry out: have mercy on us, Mother of God, and fulfill our request, for all that is Thy intercession is possible: for unto Thee is glory due now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
