Temple-chapel of the Kazan (Peschanskaya) Icon of the Mother of God in Izmailovo
located on the territory of the Nativity Deanery of the Moscow Diocese.
History[edit]
The temple is located in the building of a former kindergarten (closed in 1993, previously owned by the USSR Ministry of Railways). The temple was consecrated on Easter 2001.
Construction of a new temple
The first reconstruction of the premises was actively carried out in 2001-2004; The Russian Ministry of Railways contributed to the reconstruction of the building. The two-story building was decorated with three domes (the third was installed in February 2009); one of the facades was decorated with a decorative bay window with a semicircular window and an image of a cross. The belfry was located in the courtyard of the temple.
In 2014, a major reconstruction of the building began, part of it was dismantled. On November 4, 2014, the foundation stone of the new church was laid. The new project “is a complex of different-height volumes up to three floors with an attic, designed on the site of an existing two-story building with partial demolition, extension and addition of volumes”[2]. It is assumed that the building will house two churches at once - on the lower floor, accommodating 200 people, and on the upper, accommodating 500 people - as well as a Sunday school and a first-aid post. In addition, a “church and rectory house with a toilet for parishioners” (its construction was completed in 2013) and a “church shop with a covered parking lot” are planned.
There are a number of clubs for children at the temple.
Shrines
The temple, erected in 2014 on 9th Park Street, consists of two:
- Church of the Icon of the Kazan Peschanskaya Mother of God (Upper Temple).
- Church of St. Joasaph of Belgorod (Lower Baptismal Church).
Both names are associated with the main temple shrine - the icon of the Peschanskaya Mother of God, the general iconographic type of which repeats the Kazan image of the Mother of God. The original was found in the middle of the 18th century by the Belgorod bishop Joasaph in the village of Peski, today part of the city of Izyum in the Kharkov region.
The miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Peschanskaya in the Izmailovo Church
From the day it was found, the image was revered as miraculous. Several revered copies of the Peschansky image of the Mother of God were made, one of which is located in the Moscow Cathedral, dedicated to the miraculous icon.

Exterior decoration and architectural ensemble
As mentioned above, the architect of the Church of the Nativity of Christ was the Izmailovo architect Spiridon Kharlamov. The temple has three chapels, which are united by a central refectory with high arches. The Orthodox building is crowned with five domes, symbolizing the Savior and His Apostles. The rectangular aisles also have chapters, and the walls are decorated with symmetrical rows of kokoshniks. It is worth noting that the bell tower, porch and external porch were completed later.
The architectural style followed by Spiridon Kharlamov is called patterned and is a predecessor of Baroque.
Today the Izmailovo temple is decorated in red and white colors. On the outside, it is decorated with many patterned elements, the snow-whiteness of which stands out in contrast against the main burgundy background. Despite some clumsiness, the church looks quite harmonious and fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape.
The history of the icon of the Sand Mother of God
The Sand Icon of the Mother of God was found by Saint Josaaf among rubbish and rubbish. It was used as a partition in the coal box of the Church of the Resurrection in the city of Izyum in Ukraine. They took out the image, put it in order and gave it a place in the church.
The legend tells of a miracle that the image performed at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In Izium there lived a family whose children were constantly dying in infancy. When the last son fell ill, the husband and wife decided to take him to the miraculous image. But the boy died on the way. The mother wanted to return home, but at the insistence of the father they continued on their way. It was necessary to get to the church and serve a prayer service.
When they arrived at the church, they began to tirelessly pray for the boy’s resurrection, and when they heard the child’s cry, they fell unconscious. Only then did they tell the holy servant about the miracle created by the icon. The news about the miraculous icon quickly spread and the number of people praying to the icon increased.

Currently, the location of the shrine is unknown. The original icon was lost in the vastness of Russia, but copies of its image survived. The Peschansky Icon of the Mother of God is a shrine, and the church in her honor in Izmailovo is a tribute to memory and veneration.
Interior decoration
The inside of the Nativity Church looks no less rich than the outside. Thus, the main entrance is decorated with a massive iron door from the late 19th century, designed by Pavel Salnikov. The iconostases created by Sergei Rozhkov remained completely untouched.
The inside of the Nativity Church looks rich
When the holy images were restored in 1735, many of them were replaced with icons by Peter Piskulin. At the same time, all three iconostases acquired filigree patterned carvings. A century and a half later, they decided to update the temple painting. Since there were not enough financial resources, the order was given to the Moscow master Vasily Guryanov, who copied the famous works of Ilya Repin and Fyodor Bronnikov.
Despite the restoration work, the Izmailovo temple still retained its connection with antiquity, and the flavor of the 17th century is easily read in its interior decoration. This can be seen in the low vault, high arches, and large wall paintings.

STORY
The wooden Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1694 in the village of Gubtsovo (which is now the village of Troitskoye) by the okolnichy Ivan Yuryevich Leontyev.
Consecrated the same year. In 1726, the village of Troitskoye, Gubtsovo, also with the village of Spassky, was purchased from A.F. Leontyev Count M.G. Golovkin. In the notebook for 1736 it appears: “On May 3rd, a decree on the construction of a church of the Privy Councilor, Senator and Cavalier Count Mikhail Gavrilovich Golovkin to his servant Ivan Konyshevsky, at his request, was ordered in his master’s patrimony near Moscow, in the village of Troitsky, Gubtsovo, also, instead of the burnt wooden Trinity Church, to build again a stone church in the name of the Life-Giving Trinity, and with it two chapels - Mikhail Malein and the Great Martyr Catherine. two thrones - the Holy Trinity and the Holy Blgv. Vel. Book Alexander Nevsky. There were 108 households in the parish. At the end of 1930 the temple was closed. After that it was used for storage and a dormitory. The last user was the laboratory at the station of the Institute of Earth Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On April 7, 1993, on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the temple was returned to the believers with the help of the Cossack community under the command of military foreman (now colonel) M.V. Lavrentyev. In 2004, Archbishop Gregory of Mozhaisk performed the Great Consecration of the Trinity Church. Share:
History of construction
The history of the Nativity Shrine begins with the founding of the village of Izmailovo. In 1663, Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich ordered the reconstruction of the estate, the organization of farming, and the construction of a small temple. Soon the first people from the surrounding villages were already settling here, and a year later a wooden church was completed. Its main altar was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of Christ, the southern one - to the Mother of God, and the northern one - to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
Church of the Nativity of Christ in Izmailovo
Famous masters worked on the Izmailovskaya shrine: local architect Spiridon Kharlamov, Kostroma icon painters Sergei Rozhkov and Dmitry Emelyanov. Their brushes include the faces of revered saints, the design of all three altars, as well as the side choirs. Thus, the preserved icon of the “All-Merciful Savior” can still be seen in the central altar of the temple.
A few years after the completion of work on the wooden building, talk began about erecting a stone church. Thus, in 1678 a new temple appeared. For a whole century, the village of Izmailovo served as the residence of the emperor. The august family donated large sums to the church, but after the founding of St. Petersburg they moved to the new capital, and financial contributions stopped. Most of the peasants left with them, which led to a decrease in the parish. The staff of priests was reduced, and it was as if they had forgotten about the shrine.
However, the rapid deterioration of the Church of the Nativity did not affect its activities. Services were still held there and donations were collected. Soon, using the saved money, they began to slowly restore the interior decoration, and later they erected a belfry. When the Patriotic War of 1812 happened, the church miraculously remained unharmed. All Orthodox relics were safely hidden, and after the victory they were returned back to the parish.
The architect of the Church of the Nativity of Christ was Izmailovo architect Spiridon Kharlamov
Until 1922, the temple and the very damaged village were actively restored, but when the Bolsheviks came to power, the heyday quickly ended. Church relics along with jewelry were confiscated, and local clerks became victims of anti-religious persecution. Nevertheless, the Izmailovo temple continued to work. Even during World War II, services and processions of the cross were regularly held there.
A new round of life for the Church of the Nativity occurred already in the 80s of the twentieth century. With the donations collected, as well as thanks to patrons, the church began to be restored. At the same time, the parish expanded, priests began to engage in social activities and catechesis, a Sunday school was built, and painted icons were updated.
