“Who will not please You, Most Holy Virgin?”
We offer readers of the website Pravoslavie.Ru a theological and philological commentary on the dogmatist of the sixth tone.
Presumably the author of the dogmatist is St. John of Damascus
The chants of the Sunday service are filled not only with poetic memories of the Resurrection of the Savior, but also with many doctrinal truths. A special concentration of dogmatic elements is contained in Sunday hymns at the end of the cycles of stichera on “Lord, I cried,” which have a name corresponding to the content - “Theotokos Dogmatist.” Presumably the author of these texts is St. John of Damascus[1].
Today we will dwell on the dogma of Sunday's Great Vespers in the sixth tone. First, let's read the text in its entirety, and then look at selected passages.
Here is the Church Slavonic text:
“Who will not please You, Most Holy Virgin; / who will not sing of Your Most Pure Nativity; / the only-begotten Son, who rose from the Father without flight, / also from You, the Pure One, passed, / indescribably incarnated, / by nature this God, / and by nature he became Man for our sake; / not divided into two persons, / but into two natures / inseparably cognizable. / Pray, O Pure All-Blessed One, / to have mercy on our souls.” [2].
Greek original chant:
“Τίς μὴ μακαρίσει σε, Παναγία Παρθένε; τίς μὴ ἀνυμνήσει σου τὸν ἀλόχευτον τόκον; ὁ γὰρ ἀχρόνως ἐκ Πατρὸς ἐκλάμψας Υἱὸς μονογενής, ὁ αὐτὸς ἐκ σοῦ ?? ? ς, ἀλλ' ἐν δυάδι φύσεων, ἀσυγχύτως γνωριζόμενος. "[3].
And finally, let’s analyze the Russian translation of Archpriest V. Uspensky:
“Who will not glorify You, Blessed Virgin? who will not glorify Your immaculate Nativity? The Only Begotten Son Himself, Who from eternity shone forth from the Father, came from You, the Pure One, incomprehensibly incarnate. He, being God by nature, but for our sake became man, is not divided into two persons, but confesses in two, without confusion, united natures. Pray to Him, O Pure One, All-Blessed One, for mercy on our souls.”[4]
Who wouldn't please?
The first two lines of the Church Slavonic text end with a semicolon, which in Russian punctuation corresponds to a question mark. The author appeals to us to glorify the Most Holy Virgin in the form of a rhetorical question to the Mother of God: are there those who will not please You and sing Your Most Pure Nativity?
It is significant that the word “to please” in Russian, for example, means “to please, to give pleasure”[5], which is quite strange when referring to the Blessed Virgin Mary. For clarification, let us turn to the Greek language, where “μακαρίσει” is used.
The Greek “μακαρισμός” in Church Slavonic means bliss. The Beatitudes were given to us by Jesus Christ Himself in the Sermon on the Mount. The sign of bliss, according to St. Gregory of Nyssa, is “unceasing and shadowless joy that comes from virtue”[6]. Such joy in the Most Pure Virgin cannot but be expressed in Her glorification, which is so accurately conveyed in the translation of Archpriest V. Uspensky: “Who will not glorify You, Most Holy Virgin?”
Glowing flightlessly
The hymnographer continues the chant, briefly talking about some aspects of Orthodox doctrine.
Confirming the Orthodox Creed and destroying the false teaching of Arius, who said that the Son of God has the beginning of His existence, the fathers of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea gave the following characteristic: “(I believe in) the One who was born before all ages,” which means - before the very beginning time.
The author of the dogmatist echoes the holy fathers, speaking about the “flightless ascension” of the Only Begotten Son from the Father. The Greek word "ἄχρονος" can mean "timeless" or "eternal"[7]. Based on this, “the Only Begotten Son rose up without flight from the Father” can be translated as follows: “The Only Begotten Son, who arose timelessly (or “from eternity”) from the Father.”
God by nature
about the term “φύσις”, which in dogmatics is translated into Church Slavonic with the word “nature” , but since in this case the word is used in a Christological context, it can also be translated as “nature”.
The Fourth Ecumenical Council, meeting in Chalcedon in 451 with more than 600 fathers, approved the dogma of the two natures of the Son of God. Let us quote this important text in full:
“Following the Holy Fathers, we all unanimously teach to confess one and the same Son of our Lord Jesus Christ, perfect in Divinity and perfect in humanity, truly God and truly man, the same from the rational soul and body, consubstantial with the Father in Divinity, and the same consubstantial to us according to humanity, in everything similar to us except for sin, born before the ages from the Father according to Divinity, and in the last days for the sake of us and ours for the sake of salvation from Mary the Virgin Mother of God - according to humanity; one and the same Christ, the Son, the Lord, the only begotten, in two natures, unmerged, unchangeable, inseparably, inseparably cognizable - so that by the union the difference of the two natures is in no way violated, but all the more the property of each nature is preserved and united into one Person and one Hypostasis , - not into two persons cut or divided, but one and the same Son and Only Begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the prophets of ancient times taught about Him, and as the Lord Jesus Christ Himself taught us, and as the symbol of the fathers gave us.” [8].
The hymnographer emphasizes the great miracle of the simultaneous presence of the Divine and human natures in Christ
The author of the dogmatist briefly and poetically sang this fateful decision for Orthodoxy: “He is God by nature, and by nature he was Man for our sake; not divided into two persons, but inseparably cognizable into two natures .
“ὁ ὤν” (“This/Existing One”) - one of the Names of God, revealed to the prophet Moses (Ex. 3: 13) - is absent in the Greek text of the dogma. The word “ὑπάρχων” should be translated as “abiding.” The hymnographer thereby emphasizes the great miracle of the simultaneous presence of the Divine and human natures in Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God.
Inseparably knowable
The Greek word “γνωριζόμενος” (“knowable”) in the Russian translation is sometimes replaced by “confessed.” I would like to especially emphasize that it was the knowledge of the unfused, unchangeable, indivisible and inseparable union of two natures in Christ, the Word of God, that was revealed by the Holy Spirit and spoken through the holy fathers of the Council of Chalcedon, and now only as a consequence we confess this.
It is amazing how gracefully this pearl from the hymnographic treasury of Orthodoxy corresponds to its name - the Mother of God dogmatist.
***
The dogmatic author begins with rhetorical questions about the chanting of the Pure Virgin Mary, pointing out that it was from Her that the Savior of the world, the true word of God, Jesus Christ, came. Next, the hymnographer briefly describes the dogmatic teaching about the incarnation of the Only Begotten Son of God and the union of two natures in our Savior.
The text ends with a renewed appeal to the Mother of God: “Pray to Him, O Pure One, All-Blessed One, for mercy on our souls.”
And now, Mother of God, the same voice: Brideless Virgin, / even God indescribably conceived in flesh, / Mother of the Most High God, / Accept your servants’ prayers, O All-blameless One, / granting cleansing of sins to everyone, / now Do not accept our prayers, / pray for us all to be saved.
At the blessing of the loaves: the troparion of Demetrius twice and the Virgin Mary: once.

Glory, troparion of Demetrius, tone 3:
Great will you find in troubles, the champion of the universe, passion-bearer, / conquering languages. / Just as you brought down Liev’s pride, / and you boldly created Nestor for a feat, / so, Saint Demetrius, / prayed to Christ God / to grant us great mercy.

Glory, and now, the Mother of God: We sing to You, Bride of God, Mother of Christ God, / glorifying Your incomprehensible Nativity, / whereby we will be delivered from the flattery of the devil and all kinds of troubles, Lady Theotokos, / and we faithfully cry: / have mercy on Your flock, O All-Singing One.

Selected Psalm
1 face God is our Refuge and Strength. 2 Helper in the sorrows that come upon us. 1 For this reason let us not fear, for the earth is always troubled. 2 O God, whoever will be like You; don’t be silent, keep quiet, O God. 1 Because your enemies have made a noise, and those who hate you have raised their heads. 2 Thy wicked will is against thy people, and thy counsel is against thy holiness. 1 Thou hast laid down the carcasses of Thy servants to feed the birds of the air. 2 The flesh of your like unto the beasts of the earth. 1 They shed their blood like water. 2 For for Your sake we are slain all day long. 1 We are counted as sheep of the slaughter. 2 You have made us a byword among the nations. 1 And I was ulcerated all day long. 2 He kindled them as if silver were being liquified. 1 You passed through fire and water, and brought us to rest. 2 Rejoice in the Lord, and rejoice in righteousness. 1 For the Lord is among the generation of the righteous. 2 And their inheritance will endure forever. 1 You cried out for righteousness, and the Lord heard them. 2 Light has come to the righteous and joy to the upright in heart. 1 For an everlasting remembrance he will be righteous. 2 To the saints who are on His earth, the Lord grants all His desires in them. 1 God is marvelous in His saints. 2 The righteous shall flourish like the phoenix, and like the cedar in Lebanon shall multiply. 1 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord and trust in Him. 2 And all the rulers will boast in their hearts.
Glory, and now: Alleluia, three times.
According to the polyeleos sedalene, tone 8.
Similar to: Wisdom:
The radiance of miracles, like rays, shines / and enlightens the whole ends of the world, like a bright star, / and merrily smells like another paradise, / and cheers souls, and soothes ailments: / also you, O all-blessed one, we sing according to duty / and honor honest love Thy memory, passion-bearing Demetrius, / pray to Christ the God of forgiveness of sins / to grant to those who honor your holy memory with love.
Glory, even now, to the Mother of God:
Like the Virgin and One in wives, / You who without seed gave birth to God in flesh, / we are all blessed to give birth to humanity. / Fire entered into Your Deity / and, like a Child, wait for the Creator and Lord. / Thus, O angelic and human race, / we worthily glorify Thy most holy Nativity and, in accordance with the cry of Thee: / pray to Christ God to grant forgiveness of sins / to those who worship by faith Thy most holy Nativity.

Even if the mountains and hills of Storozhevsky were broadcasting, if not your, father, faithful guard, your labors and sweats would be silent: in the flesh, although you lived incorporeally, you created many inhuman, but angelic deeds. Vigils for your all-night confession! Who can count the number of fasts and prayers with kneelings! By your name in truth is your life. For you have calmed all bodily passions and aspirations and subdued them, as if they were worse than a better spirit, but in all respects the organ of the Holy Spirit is well-behaved from the inside, you have sowed all the spiritual with tears on the earth, you have become wise. In the same way, in Heaven, with the joy of the Spirit, you reaped the Kingdom of Heaven. In it, standing before the majesty of the Tsar of all centuries, ask our king for victory against his adversaries, just as you once asked Prince George for the Bulgarians, peace to the churches and splendor and great mercy to our souls.

the righteous women live forever, and their reward is from the Lord, and their structure is from the Most High. For this reason, they will receive the Kingdom of splendor and the crown of kindness from the hand of the Lord. For he will cover them with his right hand and protect them with his arm. He will take all the weapons of his jealousy, and the creature will make weapons for revenge against the enemy, he will put on the armor of righteousness and put on the helmet of unhypocritical judgment, he will take the shield of invincible reverence, he will sharpen vain anger into weapons, he will fight the world with him against the foolish, and lightning arrows will fly safely. And as if from the well-rounded bow of the clouds, the intention is blown. And from the slings the stones are filled with fury, the cities will fall, the waters of the sea will be indignant against them, and the rivers will be flooded in vain. And the spirit of power will stand against them and, like lightning, will kindle them, And lawlessness will fall over the whole earth, and crime will transform the thrones of the powerful. The just soul is in the hand of God, and no torment will touch them. The madmen were not expected to die with their own eyes, and their exodus was imputed to their bitterness, and their departure from us was contrived, but they are in the world. For in the face of men, even if they suffer torment, their hope of immortality will be fulfilled. And if there was a small indication, they would perceive the great one. For God has tempted them and made them worthy of Himself. Like gold in a furnace, test them, and like a fruitful sacrifice they are crushed, and when you visit them they shine, and like sparks flow down the stem. the power of the Holy Spirit, the God-like deeds entered into you, and with God’s majestic gestures you went to the mountain where you wanted to build a monastery. And like the heavenly paradise, you planted fragrant flowers, you found this, you moved in, and you erected a wonderful temple to the Mother of God, the monk gathered a multitude. And these virtuous deeds are brightly sheathed, abstinence is a wise imagination. And now, having come together in your memory, we cry out to you: pray for us, Reverend Savo, our father.
Song 7. Irmos:
X
the angel created the cave for the venerable children, but the Chaldeans fell by the command of God. The tormentor is exhorted to cry out: Blessed be God our father.
P
By the teaching of your tears, O rich man, you drowned the evil serpent. As a great victor, you have flown to the Heavenly Ones, crying out unceasingly: Blessed is God our father.
AND
You have been kindly and immaculate, and adorned with the sweat of suffering, most praiseworthy, filled with Divine light, you cry: blessed is God our father.
X
O venerable one, your city is falling, as if covered with a royal crown. Having your power within you, as a citizen has received the good of God from God.
Theotokos:
Praising
the Virgin, Who gave birth to God, show the partakers who sing to You the light and deliver hellfire and all harm from the enemy through Your prayers.
Song 8. Irmos:
AND
the holy flame poured out dew, but the righteous sacrifice and water fell. Do everything, O Christ, as much as you want. Thus we exalt you, Lord, forever.
M
You have put to death the desperation of the flesh, stripped of the honor of your possessions, striving from earth to heaven and teaching everyone to sing: Give praise to the Lord and exalt him forever.
WITH
Father Savo, you have cultivated the reins of your heart wisely, you have given these tearful clouds to drink. And the fragrant ointment came to Christ. Cry to Him: Give thanks to the Lord and exalt Him forever.
X
Blessed One, you offered Christfully fasting and tears, and immaculate prayer, vestment and soft clothing with hair shirts, thus showing the deepest humility.
Theotokos:
And
having redeemed the first oaths by the Birth of Thee, O All-Blessed Youth, the One of God, we send Gabriel’s voice to Thee: Rejoice, the cause of the salvation of all.
Song 9. Irmos:
B
It is inconvenient for man to see, but Nan does not dare to see angels. By you, Most Pure One, the Word Incarnate appeared to us. We magnify Him with the Heavenly Ones.
IN
Desiring the glory of the Almighty, you have renewed the strength of your soul and become enriched with Heavenly glory. Honest adornment of grace, Reverend Father Savo, ask our sovereign king in battle for strength and health of the body, as we may continually magnify you.
H
and the angels came to you, father, and the righteous assembly rejoiced. And having been crowned by the Almighty Right Hand of the Lady, we honor you with the same dignity.
Theotokos:
With
Thy blessing, enlighten me, O God-made Virgin among women, I pray, and deliver me from eternal fire, as I magnify Thee, as may I sing for a long time the greatness of Thee.
Svetilen:
With
the best intentions you restrained passions, and with the demon of vacillation you ruined them. And now, boldly standing before Christ, pray for your flock, Our Father.
Theotokos:
Together with
God, we trust in You, Most Pure One, who with Your past Christ was crucified with our prayers, who preserved us unharmed to the end.
On praises, stichera on 4, tone 8. Self-concordant:

Having clothed yourself with divine power, having mortified yourself in the world, having lived an immaculate and glorious life, you were one of the divine Sergius.
H
The vessel has appeared with the healing of the dawn, you have been blessed with healing, fertilized by fasting, praise to the monks, O Reverend Savo, our father.
U
Having killed yourself in the world, you lived a life equal to the angels on earth, and as a gift sanctified to the Lady, Reverend, you brought your soul, Savo, you shone with the healing of the dawn, and you received the Divine Kingdom worthy. Pray for our souls to be saved.
WITH
Your life is bright and pleasing to God, like a light that has truly appeared on earth. Savo, you have been vouchsafed to see the divine light; you have left all that is visible, and you have been vouchsafed to see the Incomprehensible One. Pray to Him, Reverend, to save our souls.
Glory, voice 6:
P
Reverend Father Savo, your message of correction went forth throughout the whole earth. In the same way, in Heaven we will receive the reward of our labors. You destroyed the demonic regiments and you reached the rank of angels, but the demon of vice was jealous of their life. Having boldness towards the Lord, seek peace for our souls.
And now, Mother of God:
