Theodore icon in Kostroma - history
In 1608, a new liar appeared in Russia, the impostor False Dmitry II. The Tsar of Yeisk was not loved, and the impostor found many adherents. Their troops approached Moscow when Patriarch Hermogenes of Moscow began sending out requests to bishops to pray for Tsar Vasily. Metropolitan Philaret of Rostov, in accordance with his rank, submissive to the legitimate king, also joined these appeals.

History of the image
There is a version that Theodore’s image was painted by the Evangelist Luke, although there is no documentary evidence of the fact. This is not the only face of Mary by him. According to the canons, it has significant similarities with the Vladimir Mother of God. How the image got into Russian territory is unknown.
The first mentions of the icon date back to the 13th century. Prince Vasily Yuryevich saw her while hunting in the forest of Kostroma. The image hung high on a pine tree. Attempts to remove it were unsuccessful. The icon rose higher and higher. This surprised the prince very much. A general prayer service was held before the face of the saint, after which they managed to get him out. The icon was taken to the main temple of Kostroma. Various miracles of the icon are known. There were two severe fires in the Kostroma Cathedral. The face was never harmed. In 1272, in a campaign against the Tatars, Prince Vasily won a victory thanks to the image that he took with him. During the battle, rays emanated from the face that burned the enemies.
