History of the image of the Virgin Mary
The image of the Mother of God “Healer” was revealed in the 4th century in Iberia, when Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina preached there. It was kept in the Tsilkan Church and belonged to the Tenderness iconographic type. Unfortunately, this ancient shrine was lost.
In Russia in the 18th century, a copy of the icon located in the Alekseevsky Monastery became famous. This is the description left by the Russian bibliographer I.F. Tokmakov:
“It is small in size: seven inches high and six inches wide; placed in a silver-gilded fold with enamel decorations. On the folding doors there are images: on the left - Archangel Michael, on the right - Archangel Gabriel, as if supporting the icon. The chasuble is decorated with many diamonds and other precious stones; The Mother of God's clothing is completely lined with pearls. The value of jewelry reaches four thousand rubles.
The icon is located in the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, in the cathedral monastery church, as this church is sometimes called, on the south side. The very fold with the icon is inserted into a stone pillar supporting the vault of the cathedral; in front of the icon there is a special platform with small stone steps on both sides; in front of the icon is a candlestick with nine lamps.”
During the great Moscow fire, during the invasion of Napoleon, the wonderful image was saved thanks to the resourcefulness of the nuns: it was hidden in the basement of the church, and hospital beds were placed on top and an infirmary was built. The French did not dare enter the temple, fearing infection. Thus, the shrine was saved from desecration.
After the closure of the Alekseevsky Monastery in the 30s of the last century, the “Healer” was moved to Sokolniki, to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, where it remains to this day.
The basis of the plot of another type of image was the legend described by St. Demetrius of Rostov in the book “Irrigated Fleece.”
A certain cleric of the Nivirna Church had a rule of praising the Mother of God with an angelic greeting every hour. If he slept, then when he woke up, he repeated the prayer as many times as the hours he missed in his sleep.
Useful materials
One day he suffered a serious illness. However, even on his sick bed, he did not give up his habit. The Mother of God unexpectedly appeared and, opening Her virgin nipple, sprinkled milk on the sick man’s lips. At that same second, the cleric got out of bed and hurried to the church, where he took his usual place among the singers. And in response to surprised questions, he told about the miracle that had happened.
Saint Demetrius draws attention to the method of healing the sick:
“After all, the Most Merciful Healer could have healed Her servant in another way, with a word or a touch, but she revealed this strange method of healing: she sprinkled those lips of the Maidens with milk, which every hour they praised the Most Pure Virgin, here still on earth, giving them a bribe. So that everyone, seeing and hearing, would give thanks with one mouth and one heart to the glorified Virgin Mary.” (“Irrigated Fleece”, ch. 24)
In the 18th century, a similar incident occurred with the priest Vikenty Bulvinensky. Seriously ill, unable to speak, Vincent mentally appealed to the Most Pure Virgin, asking for Her help. Unexpectedly, he saw a beautiful young man at his bedside - a Guardian Angel, through whose prayers the Mother of God appeared and healed the servant.
They remembered the incident described by Saint Demetrius of Rostov, and based on both healings, the now widespread image of the Mother of God “Healer” standing at the bedside of a sick cleric was painted.
Interesting fact
Sometimes, in order to further emphasize the healing properties of the Image, in addition to the Mother of God, other Christian healers are depicted on the icon: Saint Panteleimon, the unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian, the hieromartyr Antipas of Pergamon and others.
In what cases do you turn to this image?
Akathist, a kind of hymn to the Mother of God. When a person suffering from an illness, who has sincerely repented of bad deeds and has firmly decided to take the path of repentance, begins to pray to the Mother of God, he will certainly feel how his soul is reborn, his faith is strengthened and the strength to live appears.
This akathist is also read for severe, incurable diseases. Prayer to the Mother of God and mothers who do not have enough milk to feed their babies helps. The “Healer” also heals mental wounds.
