Icon of the Mother of God “Vladimir”
The holy image of the Mother of God more than once saved the Russian people from enemies. Celebrations in her honor are held three times:
– June 3 (or May 21 according to the old style) – victory over Khan Makhmet-Girey in 1521.
– July 6 (or June 23 according to the old style) – expulsion of the Tatar yoke in 1480.
– September 8 (or August 26 according to the old style) – departure of Khan Timerlane from the Russian lands in 1395.
The essence of the icon is that the Virgin Mary intends her baby Jesus to be a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. Theologians came to a similar conclusion because on the reverse side of the icon there are symbols of the suffering of Christ (a cane with a sponge, a spear and a cross). The tenderness and affection that is depicted on the icon suggests that the Mother loves her Son very much, but gives him up to desecration and death in order for Him to save humanity from sin and hell, completely voluntarily. Because he understands that the world will no longer have another Savior.
The history of this icon is full of mysteries and secrets; even its appearance in Rus' in ancient sources is described differently. According to one legend, the image was painted by the apostle and evangelist Luke on the board of the table at which the Blessed Virgin ate with Her Son and the righteous Joseph. The Virgin Mary, looking at the image of herself and the Child, said that from now on everyone will please her and the image will bring God's grace to believers in Jesus Christ. The Holy Apostle Luke lived in Jerusalem, so until 450 the icon was located there, and then it was transferred to Constantinople. In the 12th century, local Patriarch Luka made a copy of the icon and sent it to Kyiv as a precious gift to Prince Mstislav. The Mother of God Monastery became a monastery for the image of the Mother of God with the Savior in her arms in 1131. Even then, rumors that she was protecting and preserving spread throughout Rus'. In Kyiv, a mysterious icon left its place three times, as if not wanting to stay there. The son of Yuri Dolgoruky secretly removed the image, since the residents would not part with the shrine voluntarily. According to the chroniclers, the Mother of God herself chose the place for the image to stay - on the steep bank of the Klyazma in Vladimir, the horses suddenly stood up and did not move. The Most Holy Virgin appeared to Prince Andrei in a dream and commanded that a temple be established in this place.
Later, the icon found its refuge in the Assumption Cathedral of Vladimir and since then began to be called “Vladimir”. For many centuries, princes, kings, metropolitans, patriarchs and ordinary people fervently prayed to the Great Intercessor during any disaster.
In 1395, during the invasion of Tamerlane, the icon was moved to Moscow, to the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, hoping for salvation from the invader’s troops. Tamerlane had a vision in which the majestic Virgin, at the head of an angelic army, rushed towards his shelves. Waking up, the khan ordered the troops to retreat. “And hordes of enemies of the Russian land fled from the city of Moscow, driven by the power of the Most Holy Virgin...” In honor of such a wonderful deliverance, the Sretensky Monastery was built on Kuchkovo Field. This event is still celebrated on September 8 every year.
The holy icon has come to the defense of Rus' more than once.
1451 – Tatar invasion of Moscow. Then the city was besieged by pagans, and Metropolitan Jonah decided to carry the icon in a religious procession. At this time, the enemies heard a noise that sounded like approaching help in the form of Vasily Dmitrievich’s army. The Tatars lifted the siege and left.
1480 – a battle with the Tatar-Mongols was expected. Troops had already lined up on both sides of the Ugra River - Russian and Tatar, but no battle took place. 1613 - with the icon of the Mother of God there is a meeting between the troops of Minin and Pozharsky, who were the liberators of the Russian land from the Polish invaders.
