The birth of a child has always been considered God's grace, a gift from above. In Old Testament times, a Jewish family that did not have children suffered disrespect and contempt from those around them. It was believed that God deprives only sinful people of offspring.

Thus, being at an advanced age, Elizabeth gave birth to a son, John, the prophet and Forerunner of the Lord. Righteous Anna, also already in old age, gave birth to a daughter, Mary, the Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. This could only happen because they followed the will of God all their lives. The holy will of the Lord has always been higher than human will and human desires.

“If the Lord does not provide children, then first of all we must turn to Him. Children were often served after fervent prayers, fasting and almsgiving.
